Travelin’ Shoes

Years ago, when I was in college, a new gospel singing group made its appearance. They called themselves Acappella. Founder Keith Lancaster believed the human voice was the greatest instrument God ever created, and he set out to glorify God in a new and different way. One of the first albums the group did was called Travelin’ Shoes, and when the album was released, I was working for our college radio station, KACU. (Yes, this magazine girl got started in radio…and still loves it as well!)

The day Acappella was performing a concert in Abilene, I was given the task to drive them from the venue to the radio station for an interview. What a “task” that was! During the approximate 15-minute drive across town then back again, I was rewarded with my own private, in-car concert. The original bass singer for Acappella was a fellow by the name of Rodney Britt. Many of you may remember Rodney from much later as the last bass singer with The Sounds of Glory quartet, the group my dad Lanier was instrumental in helping found. If you’ve ever heard Rodney sing, you likely won’t forget it, so just try for a moment to put yourself in the place of this 21-year-old girl. Trust me, it was better sound than any Bose® or Alpine® surround sound speakers could provide! Of course, there was no way to know at age 21 what an instrumental part (pun intended) Rodney and Keith would play in the life of Dad. There was no way for me to know what a special friendship Rodney and Dad would have. There was no way to foresee the day years later, when still in the hospital after surgery from a serious car accident, my Houston hospital room would fill with nurses and staff to hear Rodney sing Amazing Grace to me. Things like these make me aware of how amazing my God is--how He intertwines our lives, our circumstances, and the timelines to work out best for His almighty plan. I do not claim to ever understand it. I cannot. My brain can no more wrap around the mightiness of who He is than I can understand the vastness of the universe He created. I am pretty sure I sat through my college astronomy class with my jaw on my desk more than once. The fact that I can gaze at tonight’s sky--and the twinkling starlight I see actually left those stars thousands of years ago (or more) and is just reaching me tonight–truly blows my mind. Moments like those remind me “How Great Thou Art.” One other thing. You may remember a column I wrote a while back where I shared with you that I never really know what I am going to write until I sit down to do so. Since we believe God owns this magazine, I try to write what I feel led to write. Just so you know, I sat down to write about vacations and thought since I was ready to put on my “Travelin’ Shoes,” that would make a cute title. Maybe I’ll try to write that vacation column next month!

What’s the plan, the written plan? Is there a plan? As Linda and I load up for some higher elevation and cooler temperatures, packing our GFP (Global Financial Partners) technology, that allows me to work remotely some of this 2021 summer, I got to thinking about several things. What a blessing to enjoy this freedom we celebrated as we honored those before us on the recent Memorial Day just passed. What a blessing to live in a country of opportunity to plan and forge our own path, including the struggle of the journey in doing so, making our appreciation of the blessing so much greater. The blessing of parents that taught love, integrity, work ethic, thrift, investment, and planning.

Should Children Be Seen but Not Heard? I wrote a book several years ago, “Grandma Was Right After All,” in which I deconstructed the twenty-five most popular parenting adages of a bygone era. They included “You made this bed, so you and only you will lie in it,” “I knew if I gave you a long enough rope, you’d hang yourself,” and “You will have to stew in your own juices over this.” An entire parenting philosophy was expressed through the adages in question, most of which are now extinct because the philosophy in question has gone by the wayside, to the detriment of us all. Nearly all these adages are misunderstood today, but surely the single most misunderstood parenting aphorism in the history of humankind is “Children should be seen and not heard.” It actually originated in 15th Century England and applied only to – gasp! – young girls, who were thought to have nothing to say worth hearing. Gradually, however, it was expanded to include young boys as well, for which we are all grateful. “Children should be seen but not heard” was ripe for demonizing, and demonized it was by America’s mental health community, who claimed its popular use reflected a general disdain of children. That may have

been true of the Augustine clergyman who first penned it, but by the time I heard it, circa 1954, its meaning had evolved. It simply meant that when in a room otherwise occupied by adults holding conversation, children were to listen (be seen) but not interrupt (be heard). In other words, we were to know our place. It was a very civilized arrangement, and no one my age whom I’ve queried on the subject has ever expressed feeling disdained upon hearing it. In fact, we boomers tend to rue that all too many of today’s parents seem to lack the mettle to tell their children, in no uncertain terms, what their place is and to stay there. The almost inevitable result is children who, through no fault of their own, are irritating. Have you noticed what almost invariably happens when children are allowed to participate in adult conversation? Given license to talk, they don’t stop talking, which is in no one’s best interest, including their own. Today, the adage could be applied to parents who tend to over-protect and over-manage their children. The few and far between parent of sixty-plus years ago – anxious, hovering, micromanaging, enabling – has become ubiquitous today, a clear refutation of Darwin’s theory that only functional attributes are perpetuated. In those glory days, parents were to provide adequate supervision, but at a reasonable distance--which explains my mother’s insistence that in any weather other than a lightning storm or hurricane, I was to be outside, out from “underfoot” – another parenting word that has fallen out of usage. By the way, “underfoot” was synonymous with “annoying,” and I knew it, and I am today a better person for knowing it. I trust my friends agree.

“LOCAL GIRL AND LOCAL SQUIRREL ACCLAIMED IN NEW ROLES” What writer could resist that fun little title? But further explanation is due.

LOCAL GIRL: COURTNEY BRIZENDINE WOODRUFF Courtney Woodruff, daughter of Gary and Angela Brizendine, grew up in Huntsville with her younger sister Cassy and older brother Woody. The Brizendines enjoy calling this gorgeous area home. Both Courtney and Cassy entered the family through adoption, and this very fact plays into the story shared in this article. Courtney now lives in Lacey, Washington, where she serves as a foster parent alongside her husband Daniel and three sons Jacob, Logan, and Marshall.

LOCAL SQUIRREL:

“NAMELESS” for the present

For years, Gary Brizendine built custom-made golf clubs in his backyard workshop. Due to the various components used, he kept the door open for ventilation, which allowed a squirrel to venture inside one day and discover the box of pecans Gary kept on the floor. This curious and intrepid little creature became a daily visitor to the workshop, and these traits landed our little friend the main role of the story.

THE STORY: JUNIPER SPARK and The Dagger of Mirren The “story” is actually a new book Courtney has written, entitled Juniper Spark and The Dagger of Mirren. It has been well-received and is gaining in popularity.

Courtney, please share a few details about your childhood years and your educational achievements. I’m grateful for my upbringing and family life in Huntsville. In the summertime, you could often find me out of the heat within the airconditioned walls of the Huntsville Public Library. My parents gently “forced” me to participate in the summer reading program each year, and I’m so thankful they did. I also have fond memories of my art teacher Marsha Phillips, who has been an important influence in my life. I graduated from Huntsville High School in 2004 and earned a bachelor’s degree in general studies with concentrations in English, art, and hospitality management from the University of North Texas. My master’s degree is in human services counseling with a focus on military resilience. I studied Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and how it affects veterans and their families. This experience translated well and helped me to better understand and serve the foster care community.

Have you written professionally prior to writing this book? I created a personal blog when my husband joined the military. While we were stationed in Germany, I got a job as a writer-editor for Stars and Stripes, a newspaper for the troops. Our small team -- which was actually led by another Huntsville native, Genevieve Ruffin Northup (such a small world!) -- launched a website for military families stationed overseas, and I wrote and posted articles online. I’m thankful for Genevieve’s friendship and mentorship. I later wrote for USAA, an insurance company that serves veterans and their families.

Share the road you traveled that brought you into your new role as the author of a children’s book. I have had the idea for this story for at least ten years. Growing up as an adopted child, I had many questions and did not know how to ask them. I thought it might hurt my parents if I asked questions, so I kept them all inside. These types of situations are hard enough for adults; more so for kids, and issues relating to adoption and foster care are generally hard to discuss for those involved. But stories are really powerful and can bring to light these issues and provide avenues for discussion. That was my purpose for writing this book -- to create an opportunity for kids to connect with and form deeper bonds with their parents.

Briefly share the storyline of Juniper Spark and The Dagger of Mirren. The basic storyline is about a young squirrel, Juniper Spark, who is being cared for in a place called Foster Hollow. It is her fourteenth birthday, and she is experiencing the complicated emotions that tend to arise on this occasion for adoptees and children in foster care. This

birthday takes an unexpected turn when she finds a mysterious gift on her pillow which sends her off on an adventure to learn more about her birth family. The story is about creating and defining family and home. I modeled Juniper’s foster mother, Sorrel, after a real-life woman in our local community. Jane Van Deventer has been fostering children for over 40 years and is presently caring for two infants. Her door is always open, and she is such an inspiration to me.

It’s time to bring your dad’s little visitor, the curious and intrepid squirrel, into the limelight. How does it figure into the story? After pondering this story for several years, I finally decided to turn the characters into woodland creatures, making this a fun and inviting story for children. The squirrel became the main character because of its curious nature and the courage it had to journey into unknown situations with confidence. It’s a perfect match for my main character. And as I told my sister Cassy, she shares these same traits. She has always been fiercely courageous, and I admire her for this.

How have your children responded to the story, and did they play a part in its development? They love the book! They enjoy reading stories that contain action, animals, and adventure--and Juniper Spark and The Dagger of Mirren has all three. They actually played a large part in the development of the book. the illustrator for the series. I’m writing the second book now and plan to make this a series of three books and will, of course, employ the same illustrator for the entire series.

Meforya (Mehnaaz Husain) is an Indian based artist and freelance illustrator who specializes in character design. We loved the vibrancy of her work and the vitality of her characters. She is currently studying at the National Institute of Design in Andhra Pradesh and wants to pursue a career in animation. We look forward to her involvement with these next two books and someday hope to meet her in person. That would be a dream come true.

How has your book been received by the public? I have been overwhelmed by the response. I’ve received pictures from all over the country of parents with their child or children curled up next to them, reading the book together. It has been so heartwarming and humbling. Parents are telling me their kids can’t wait for the next book. Based on the kind comments I’ve received, I believe it has been accomplishing my goal, enabling young children to be able to ask bigger questions. The story also helps others understand what adoptees and foster children go through.

Do you have any last thoughts to share with our readers? There is a quote by Fred Rogers that is very meaningful to me, “Love begins with listening.” I believe this is so true. Listening is an act of love. Our stories and experiences matter. We don’t know how someone is feeling unless we give them an opportunity to share and truly hear what they have to say. I hope these books will have a positive impact on children and youth in foster care, adoptees, their families and caregivers, friends, and anyone who knows and loves them. I am grateful for the reception this book has received, and I hope to have the second book out by Christmas.

Dear Gabby Welcome back to the Dear Gabby advice column. I get a lot of questions about aging and how to know when you are officially old. I decided old age is when you still have something on the ball, but you are just too tired to bounce it. When I was young, I would sneak out of the house to go to parties. He may grow up to be a mechanical genius (if you don’t give him a chemistry set) in the meantime. I can relate. My son kept chewing on electrical cords, so I had to ground him. He’s an adult now and is doing better currently and conducting himself properly. (Sorry, I couldn’t help myself.) GABBY DEAR GABBY My Dad is so terrible. When my friends and I were taking prom pictures, he told my new boyfriend to stand at the end of the picture so he could crop him when out when I dumped him! Our friends thought it was hilarious, but now that I broke up with him, they all think I’m mean and had it planned all along, just to go to prom. My Dad is the mean one. Time, to Plant Your Own Veggies August marks the beginning of the second planting season. It is actually the fall planting season, but it is a hard sell to tell Texans it is fall in August. Nevertheless, it is time to plant your fall garden. The price of veggies and herbs in the grocery stores has more than a few folks wanting to “try their hand” at gardening for the first time. It is quite easy and simple. Soil, seed, sunlight, and water are still the mainstays, despite every new gadget and product under the sun telling you otherwise. To begin, choose an area for your garden that receives 8 hours of direct sunlight a day. The area needs good drainage and easy access to water, so the crops can be watered 3x a week during the heat. A garden can be on a 6’ x 10’ apartment patio, a 15’ x 10’ area in the lawn, or you can nestle your veggies in your existing landscape beds, provided there is room for growth. Gardens require a quality sandy loam and a humus base, at 3”-4” of depth if planted in the ground. If you are doing container gardening, starting with a great potting medium is essential. My personal favorite is Gardeners Magic (by LP), because it is a “ready –made” garden in a

bag, but there are several good soil mediums on the market. If using manure, ensure it is aged and do not use poultry manure in the fall. Mushroom compost is a great planting medium when allowed to set under a black tarp for several months, to kill the weed seeds by heat….otherwise, pulling endless amounts of nutgrass will become your new cardio exercise. Till to a depth of 12”, and form rows 3” tall in long lines (if planting in the ground), and do not forget to add additional humus or compost each season. Now that the bed is ready, choose the variety of seed you want to grow. This can be tricky when doing a small space or containers, because you will have more seed than you need, but the seed will save to next season and can be kept in airtight containers for several years. Learn how to read the back of a seed package, and do not be afraid to ask questions (this is how you learn). The seed package will tell you the # of days till production, which should be at least 10 days before the first expected freeze date. From experience, I can tell you the first freeze has been from late October to mid-November for the past 8 years.

The following veggies should be planted from seed now for harvest in October: beans, beets, squash, cucumbers, okra, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, parsley, spinach and eggplant. Cool weather vegetables, planted from seed, that will easily withstand a frost: cauliflower, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, turnip greens, garlic, and cabbage. For those who wish to grow your own pumpkins, early July is your planting date for a Halloween harvest. Starter vegetable plants will not be out until mid to late August for warm weather fall crops, and the cool weather fall crops should not be planted before late September or bolting will occur. Fertilizer is a big debate and everyone has their favorite. The Texas A&M website (www.agrilifeextension.tamu.edu.com) recommends applying 2 – 3 lbs of slow release 21-7-14, per 100 sq’ of garden area and then apply 1 tablespoon of ammonium sulfate (21-0-0) every 3 weeks around each plant and water thoroughly, provided you have an adequate phosphate level in your soil. If the level is below 8% a more balanced fertilizer with a phosphorous content of 10 or more is needed. Always use a soil test each season, to ensure you are not over fertilizing, under fertilizing or just shooting in the dark. Soil tests are inexpensive

and can be purchased at garden centers. If you are having problems with a crop year after year, and inconsistent watering is not the culprit, your soil recipe is probably off. The last point (and possibly the most important) is that growing your own gives you full control of your food source. It may not always be the best harvest, but you did it and you can be proud of your accomplishment. Growing your own saves money in the long run and you have fresh, straight out the garden veggies while you teach yourself and your kids. This creates family time, exercise, teamwork, and memories that can never be replaced by a video game or time on social media. Enjoy the fun! Happy Gardening

When Hurricane Harvey dumped prodigious rainfall on coastal Texas in August 2017, the home of Bill Smith, the former head football coach at Aldine High School, was flooded with more than three feet of water. Soon, many coaches and former athletes, as well as former coaches, came to Bill’s house to clean up the soggy mess. Among those was Huntsville resident Mitch Reed, who had been a member of Bill’s football coaching staff at Aldine High School during the 1980s and 1990s. After a few days, there were only a handful of workers left to finish the clean-up and move Bill and his wife Brenda to another house. That’s when Mitch experienced a lightbulb moment. “The retired coaches were the ones who were able to show up as help was needed, because everybody else was working,” he says.

As Mitch remembered the great fellowship he and other coaches had enjoyed during his years of coaching, the metaphorical lightbulb grew brighter. “As a staff, we spend hours and hours together. The bond and the camaraderie we have is pretty tight,” he says. After retiring in 2016, Mitch missed that fellowship, and he imagined other retired coaches might miss it as well. Furthermore, he realized that retired coaches have much to offer and would certainly be willing to help other coaches who were experiencing hardship. He envisioned

a network of retired coaches who would get together to socialize, but who would also be willing to deploy as needed to help other coaches, both active and retired. Mitch shared his idea with other retired coaches, and they seemed to like the idea. So, Mitch formed a Facebook group called Coaches Helping Coaches, hoping retired coaches throughout Texas who needed help—and those willing to supply it—could connect. He soon found, however, that retired coaches have spotty participation on Facebook realized he needed a dedicated organization in order to function efficiently.

Mitch’s New Year’s resolution in 2020 was to turn his loose network of retired coaches into a non-profit organization, and he discussed it with his wife Lisa, a registered nurse at HCA Houston Healthcare Conroe. “She bought what I was selling,” Mitch says. The couple funded the start-up themselves; soon, Mitch’s parents made a generous donation to the new non-profit, as did Kitty Spence, a former Aldine High School assistant principal and football enthusiast. On May 20, 2020, Fellowship of Retired Coaches (FRC) became a 501(c)(3) organization with a vision of uniting active, retired, and future coaches through

A “fortunate career” Mitch ran cross country and track at Pearland High School and Stephen F. Austin State University, and by the time he had finished college, he had decided to become a coach. He began his career in Aldine Independent School District in 1980, coaching for two years at Stovall Junior High before moving to Aldine High School. There he coached football and cross country and was the head girls track coach. During the 80s and 90s, Aldine High School was a football powerhouse, going to the playoffs every year but one, and going to

Mitch also coached track and football in Tomball for four years and at The Woodlands College Park High School for another 12 years. In all, he coached for 36 years before retiring in 2016. Besides being associated with a legendary football program, he had the privilege of accompanying several athletes to the state track meet. “I had a fortunate career,” he says humbly. “I was at the right place at the right time.” Friends predicted he’d become bored in retirement, but as the executive director of FRC, Mitch has a retirement job that keeps him busy. There was much to learn, but Mitch, thankful for his rewarding coaching career, is devoted to building FRC into a thriving, statewide organization. Soon after putting his plan in motion, he was joined by two former colleagues, Cathy Roach and Dwaine Wyman,

Cathy, who coached a variety of sports at Aldine High School, applauded Mitch’s idea. “I thought it was really pretty cool,” she says. Now that the coronavirus pandemic is becoming an unpleasant memory, she is looking forward to socializing with other retired coaches. She is also pleased that FRC funds scholarships for future coaches, as well as the children and grandchildren of coaches. Dwaine, who coached football and track with Mitch at Aldine, Tomball, and College Park, agrees. “Coaching is a service profession,” he says. “It’s hard when you are a coach. There are times during the season when you are working about 100 hours a week.” In retirement, there is more time. “If we can do something productive, it’s a good thing,” he says. He has been attending FRC socials and hopes to renew ties with former colleagues as events become larger.

to students who aspire to be coaches and two $500 scholarships to the children of coaches. FRC’s goal is to provide ten, $1,000 scholarships in 2022.

Others provided help, too. Cathy’s daughter, Brittany Duke, volunteered to tweak the organization’s website to make it easily accessible to members and prospective members. Former athletes—now in business—became sponsors of FRC’s inaugural golf tournament, which greatly exceeded expectations. “We did really well on our first golf tournament,” Mitch says. As a result of the fundraising effort, FRC was able to give $2,000 in scholarships in 2021: two $500 scholarships

As FRC moves past the pandemic that hindered its start-up, the organization wants to get the word out to coaches throughout Texas. “We need more members and more people to become aware of us,” Mitch says. While some retired coaches may simply want to socialize, others might be inclined to volunteer to help coaches who are experiencing hardship, or to help active coaches. Mitch envisions active coaches using FRC’s website to find retired coaches who can provide assistance. For example, active coaches might appreciate having knowledgeable volunteers at track meets. “We want active coaches to find out what we do,” Mitch says.

We all know the adage – everything is b i g g e r in Texas. So, it was likely no surprise to anyone when Billy Bob Barnett, a Texas A&M graduate and pro football player, teamed up with a Fort Worth nightclub owner to turn an abandoned 100,000-square-foot department store and former open-air cattle barn into a nightclub. It was 1981, and their go-big-or-go-home attitude resulted in the one-of-a-kind live music venue and dance hall known as Billy Bob’s Texas, which is still promoted as “the World’s Largest Honky Tonk.” “When Billy Bob’s Texas opened in ’81, it was a week-long celebration in true larger-than-life, largest honky-tonk fashion,” said Terran Fleenor, Director of Marketing, Billy Bob’s Texas. “We kicked off the celebration with a private show by Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers.” “That was a big night,” remembered Rudy Gatlin of the Gatlin Brothers. “It was kind of a private gettogether with a couple thousand people invited. But somehow, a whole bunch of people got in there, and the place was packed! I later heard the fire marshal came and stood at the door and said, ‘nobody goes in until somebody comes out!’ Billy

Bob’s also gave us a red and gold-trimmed satin jacket at the grand opening, which a few years ago I donated to the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame.”

The Gatlin Brothers

The Gatlin Brothers have played at Billy Bob’s Texas at least 10 times since they helped open the venue 40 years ago. Other A-list country music legends who have performed in the iconic venue in the Fort Worth Stockyards include Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Charlie Daniels and Merle Haggard. In 1983, while performing on stage, Haggard offered each person in the crowd a whiskey shot. The drinks totaled 40 gallons and earned Haggard a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the purchaser of the biggest round ever. “This place has so many stories,” added Fleenor. “When Garth Brooks first played here, he played to 500 people. When he came back six months later, he played to a sold-out crowd. Another cool fact – Miranda Lambert is still the only female and only solo artist to sell out full-capacity, back-toback nights. I think that’s really cool. Girl power!”

out each wall that is covered with memorabilia and handprints of many singers who have performed on the big stage. “The Wall of Fame got its start in 1989 when our Entertainment Director at the time, Robert Gallagher, was looking for a way for artists to cement their place at Billy Bob’s. The first handprints were done in a bus tub

in the kitchen. Some artists do handprints to commemorate sold-out shows; we ask others to do it because we know they are on their way up and we want to catch them while they are here,” explained Fleenor. Hometown artists included in the Wall of Fame are Huntsville’s Cody Johnson, Montgomery’s Josh Ward, and Conroe’s Parker McCollum.

Some have left more than just handprints. “Ray Benson put his boots in, and Denna Carter put her feet in because she always performed barefoot,” added Fleenor. “For a lot of them, it’s a milestone in their career to do their handprints here but also to sign the backstage wall. That’s another milestone they can check off their bucket list.” Guests can also check out Billy Bob’s indoor bull-riding area – that’s right, live music and live bulls under the same roof. “Gilley’s was the hot place after Urban Cowboy, and everyone visited Gilley’s to ride the mechanical bull. Billy Bob Barnett wanted to one-up Gilley’s, so he put in a real riding arena with the slogan, ‘real bulls, not steel bulls,’ and we had shirts and bumper stickers made. We were still holding bull riding events Friday and Saturday nights, pre-COVID, and hope to again really soon. You pay $4 to see the bull riding and then go to the show,” said Fleenor. Also on the Billy Bob’s tour, you won’t see a disco ball above the massive dance floor but something more spectacular. “We have a rhinestone saddle,” said Fleenor. “The backstory varies. Some say it was inspired by the movie ‘Rhinestone’ starring Dolly Parton; others say it is from the movie.” And then there is a section of the venue dedicated to the live albums recorded at Billy Bob’s on the big stage titled, “Live at Billy Bob’s Texas.” “Live at Billy Bob’s Texas is a record label we

It was supposed to be a test run for Merle Haggard, so they recorded the album and by the time it was done, Pat Green had blown up and now it is still one of most successful albums. Pat Green went on to sell out 15 consecutive shows after that,” said Fleenor.

I said, “Sorry, that was a bad throw.” He stopped, gave me a kind look and said, “No daddy, that was a wonderful throw.” Then he took 2 steps towards getting the ball, stopped again, turned back around and said, “When we say something nice, even when we don’t mean it at all, that’s called being polite, right?”

I gave my son a timeout from swords, light sabers, guns and (Thor) hammers due to him being too violent/aggressive. After about 10 minutes of quiet, I went to check on him and found him building with his Legos. After I told him I was proud of him for listening, I asked him what he was building. He told me he was building an ultimate Lego weapon so he could destroy me. I think he may have missed the point, but at least he’s persistent.

I was on the phone with my wife discussing dinner plans when my 7-year-old informed us that, “Salad is ruining my life.”

When my son was really young, I told him, “I don’t ever want to see you do that again.” He responded with “Okay, close your eyes.”

Today’s Veterinary World Veterinary medicine has truly had some interesting changes over the past 18 months. Covid hit and, because of veterinarians being considered essential businesses, most clinics, at least here in the Great State of Texas, continued to be busy. That created many challenges, such as juggling staff that needed to be quarantined, going to curbside only appointments, and other daily stresses associated with Covid.

Other factors have contributed to the business of veterinary practices. People quarantined at home decided they needed a furry companion, so adoptions have increased 15-25% over the previous years. People working at home are spending more time with their pets and are more observant of potential problems their pets may be having. Pet owners that have new additions have decided that their existing pets need to get caught up on their preventative care. The result of all this has resulted in frustrated clients, overworked veterinary staff, and burnedout veterinarians.

Here is an example of a typical day in the life of a veterinary hospital. The day starts with every appointment slot filled. The office opens at 7:30. Within 30 minutes, the office receives 3 to 5 phone calls from clients and non-clients needing to get their pet seen with some type of urgent issue. Those clients are accepted on a drop-off basis to be worked in throughout an already full day. About 11:15, a client calls with an emergency. There goes the lunch hour for most staff and the veterinarian. The morning has finally ended. Staff members are feverishly trying to get client records and charges placed in the computer, while also needing to get medications together for each

patient. The veterinarian is spending 10-15 minutes per urgent drop off, discussing findings and treatment options. Here comes the afternoon. Another full afternoon of appointments, wait for it, here it comes. It is now 4 pm, hoping to wind down the day. There are 2 more clients that need to be seen today with an urgent matter and also a 5:15 c-section that needs to be performed. Well, we finally wrapped it up around 7:30 to 8:00. The staff is exhausted and at their wits end, BUT GUESS WHAT, they have given you and your pet every ounce of care they have and used every ounce of their patience. The veterinarian has exhausted every brain cell they have to make sure your pet has the very best treatment. The good news is…they get to do it all over again tomorrow.

The veterinary staff is made up of truly amazing people. They come to work every day, not for the money, because they are underpaid and overworked, but because of a true calling in their lives to help animals. Many of them had aspirations of being veterinarians and could have been under different circumstances, but they are just as dedicated to the profession as any veterinarian.

As you call your veterinarian today, before you get upset with the receptionist or you think the staff and veterinarian just don’t care about you or your furry loved ones because they don’t have any availability, take a minute to think about the scenario above and remember--every person working there has your pet’s best interest at heart.

Ouch, my tooth hurts! Few things are worse than when you have a nagging tooth pain. Trying to find relief is tough, but are all tooth pains the same? No, let’s discuss! Imagine you are sitting around watching TV, just relaxing, and you start to feel this achy discomfort that comes out of nowhere. The discomfort feels like a “throbbing pain” that may come and go in waves. You decide you may want a warm drink, and that causes the tooth more discomfort. These are all signs that the nerve inside the tooth is going bad. The “achy, throbbing” discomfort you feel is the nerve abscessing (or dying), causing an infection. What does that mean? The tooth will need a root canal to remove the nerve. Everyone has horror stories of how awful root canals are, but they are really pretty boring, with no discomfort during the procedure and minimal discomfort after. Next type is usually after you have some dental work done. After time, you start to notice discomfort, and your teeth do not fit quite right. The tooth can become sensitive to cold and hot liquids. Typically, all that needs to be done is the filling or crown needs to be adjusted. It may take a couple days for the tooth to completely settle back down. Along the same lines, you may be eating some food, typically something hard, and you get an electrical jolt from your tooth with some discomfort that could linger after. This is a sign the tooth is

trying to split. If the tooth is splitting, it can go two ways: 1) Only the part above the gums is breaking off. The treatment is to crown the tooth to help make it structurally sound. 2) The crack has progressed down the root of the tooth. Once it has progressed far enough down, the tooth is no longer viable and will need to be removed. These are just a few examples of the main things we see. There are varying degrees of these three scenarios, and many more nuisance reasons why a tooth can have discomfort. Getting dental work done is usually much easier if the tooth is treated before it starts hurting. Regular check-ups allow us to intervene when issues are small. Milton opened the first CPA office in Montgomery County knowing he wanted to raise his young children in the environment of a smaller town. In 1981, Virginia Miller joined the firm. Long-time employees of Milton’s, Susan Nightingale and Lucinda Marshall, worked alongside Virginia as they all raised their families. These ladies are probably two of the hardest working individuals you will find. In 2016, Virginia merged the firm into the regional firm of Carr, Riggs & Ingram, LLC. McMullen Tax Service began in the mid-1980s by owner Frank H. McMullen, a veteran of WWII and a retiree of the Social Security Administration. Frank built his business by referrals-one client referring another over the course of 30 plus years. Frank never advertised the service he provided, and the business grew. At age 85, Frank retired from preparing tax returns and asked John and Kimberly to come take over the business. John was Frank’s pastor at the time and had recently retired from the TDCJ as an assistant warden. In Frank’s eyes, it seemed John and Kimberly would be a natural fit. He was right. John and Kimberly service clients across the U.S., China, Russia, South America, and the Middle East. John is also the pastor of Chapelwood MBC in Huntsville. During the war, Frank was on an admiral’s staff, and every day at 3pm, the admiral took his coffee along with his subordinates. Frank continued this tradition into his private working career, and when the Wiseners came aboard, the tradition stuck. Every day at 3pm, the office takes a ‘coffee break’. Clients have grown accustomed to joining in for a mid-afternoon coffee break. Even when away from the office, John and Kimberly take a break every day at 3pm for a cup of coffee and allow time to stand still as they savor the moment. Step back in time to the roaring 20s, and you will find an entrepreneur by the name of Joe L. Cooper. He was Daddy Joe to us and Mr. Cooper to many. He was my great-grandfather and the man responsible for establishing the savings, loan & insurance business in 1920. It was originally located in the old First National Bank Building on the square in Madisonville. People still talk about him and tell great stories of how nobody would lend them money, but Mr. Cooper would. It is that thought process that has given us a true spirit of pride and caring for our neighbors and our community. It is that spirit that has grown our agency to what it is today. And three generations later, we would like to think we do as well. It’s hard to believe a family business can go on like this for so long, but it has. The Latest Artwork that Bridges the Community: Richard Haas’ Huntsville Murals

As noted in a 2016 Postcards article, world-famous muralist Richard Haas has completed 16 murals in the Huntsville downtown area—more exterior projects than in any other U.S. city. That’s quite a feat considering he’s done large projects in New York, Chicago, Boston, Madison, St. Louis, Philadelphia, and Phoenix. Haas’ body of work in Huntsville, however, has grown even larger, with a new work on the 7th Street Bridge, which crosses Town Creek near Eastham-Thomason Park. As with most community undertakings, the work benefited from the contributions of many.

The project began several years ago, when the city began an aggressive—and ongoing— effort to improve the community’s infrastructure. Sherry McKibben, who then served as Grants Director for the City of Huntsville, obtained a grant for a bridge on 7th Street, and this bridge included pilasters—which, in turn, offered the opportunity for design. Linda Pease—who then worked as Cultural Services Manager for the City of Huntsville— consulted with local artists, who suggested “flora and fauna” as artistic subjects for the bridge. Pease took the project to the Huntsville Arts Commission (HAC). During discussions, Haas’ name was floated and, of course, was met with enthusiastic approval. For his part, Haas was also eager, even agreeing to a lower-than-typical price for the design of the project. Following additional discussions, Haas agreed to design renderings of Texas’ endangered animal species. His design was then handed off to Texas artist Patrick Richards—a veteran of Haas’ Huntsville’s projects—who completed the paintings. The final project involved depictions of 34 such species—including the American Bald Eagle, the Prairie Chicken, the Margay, and the Red Cockaded Woodpecker, the latter of which is present in Walker County. The project also includes four book-ending faux stenciled signs reading, “Texas Endangered Species.” The project, according to City Manager Aron Kulhavy, “was a great opportunity to combine infrastructure and aesthetics, and I believe art in public spaces improves the community. The Eastham-Thomason Park is one of the community’s wonderful locations, and I think this type of collaborative project makes it even better.” Nestled between two sections of Eastham-Thomason, the bridge and artistic subject matter protects the park and local citizens from floods, raises environmental awareness, and beautifies the community. The work also extends Haas’ artistic presence beyond the downtown area, truly bridging urban and rustic settings in Huntsville. “It was a pleasure,” noted Pease, “to work again with Richard Haas and Patrick Richards for the community. It is a delightful crossing of Town Creek, and I look forward to seeing it serve the community for many years to come.”

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Step 2: Beat butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract together in a medium bowl until well combined. Step 6: Whisk water, sugar, and cornstarch together in a small pan over medium heat. Bring to a boil, whisking constantly. Add gelatin and whisk until incorporated. Remove from heat and set aside to cool, whisking occasionally to prevent a skin from forming on the top. Step 7: Spread the cream cheese mixture over the cooled shortbread. Top evenly with sliced strawberries then pour gelatin mixture evenly over the strawberries. Refrigerate until set. Cut into squares.

What’s Cookin’ Spinach Enchiladas

Step 4: In a skillet over medium heat, warm tortillas one at a time until flexible, about 15 seconds. Spoon about 1/4 cup of the spinach mixture onto the center of each tortilla. Roll up, and place seam side down in a 9x13 inch baking dish. Pour enchilada sauce over the top, and sprinkle with the remaining cup of Monterey Jack.

Ingredients 1 Tbs butter ½ cup sliced green onions 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 (10 oz) pkg frozen chopped spinach , thawed, drained and squeezed dry 1 cup ricotta cheese

Those are the words staff and doctors of Lone Star Family Health Center (LSFHC) in Huntsville continually use when describing their 5,775 square foot facility, located at 227 State Highway 75 North. Their mission is to provide compassionate, affordable healthcare and prepare tomorrow’s family medicine professionals. That mission includes a focus on those who are underserved, uninsured, and underprivileged. LSFHC is a community non-profit, led by a volunteer board of directors, 51 percent of whom must be clients of the health center.

The LSFHC Huntsville location prides itself on having that smaller community, family atmosphere for its patients and staff. The walls are adorned with vibrant, full color photos of Walker County’s most memorable establishments. A striking picture of the Sam Houston statue greets patients in the waiting area, followed by photos of other notable establishments such as Kings Candies, Café Texan, Sam Houston Museum, the Steamboat House, and the front of Huntsville High School in 1929. LSFHC started in 1979 as a Family Medicine Residency Program located in Conroe. In 2002, they joined in partnership with Conroe Medical Education Foundation and Conroe Hospital to be renamed LSFHC and open as a health center in Conroe. Once federally qualified in 2004, LSFHC continued to expand into Spring, Grangerland, and Willis with satellite offices. In November 2020, LSFHC made its way to Huntsville. The Huntsville location is the largest of the satellite offices, with an inhouse pharmacy, nine exam rooms (two of which can also serve as procedure rooms), and a counseling room. They offer family medicine, gynecology, and limited obstetric services.

One factor that sets LSFCH apart and helps them reach their target population is the Sliding Fee Discount Program. The program is offered to those living at or below 200% of the federal poverty level to help cover out of pocket costs for patients with or without insurance. The criteria are based on household income and family size. Eligibility interviews can be conducted daily at the Huntsville clinic. In 2020, over $2 million in sliding fee discounts, across all locations, were extended to LSFHC patients. “It’s a tremendous difference when you pay $25 for a regular doctor’s visit versus $150, and you won’t get a big bill in the mail after you leave,” said Pavlock.

twice (Nigeria and New York) and founded the Holistic Care Education and Health Foundation in Nigeria. “A dream of mine is to improve care in rural and underserved communities in my adopted country, said Ede. “Once I was in medical school, I learned a lot of diseases can be prevented.” From newborn to the elderly, Lone Star provides services for all ages. “Our emphasis is becoming a patient’s health home,” stated Harwell. “Primary care is extremely important for long-term health outcomes; having a health home that can make sure you stay on track with preventative health measures from adolescence through adulthood and into your golden years is key to staying healthy and avoiding costly medical bills later in life. Good overall health is difficult to maintain with occasional trips to urgent care or the emergency room.” LSFHC offers a variety of services from your traditional annual checkup to counseling services for youth and adults. “We offer full service, comprehensive services, and a ton of programs not offered anywhere else in the area,” says Pavlock.

In-house pharmacy As you walk into the brand-new building, to the right patients will find an in-house pharmacy. This allows patients to fill prescriptions on site instead of making another stop when they leave the health center. The pharmacy is manned with technicians to fill prescriptions, but patients may also teleconference with a pharmacist in Conroe virtually through an iPad. “This is a highlight in itself because clinics usually don’t have that on site,” said Pavlock. The pharmacy is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Counseling Gustavo Gonzales, a licensed professional counselor, is on site every Tuesday to offer patients one hour counseling sessions for both mental and behavioral health. If patients are not able to make it to the office, sessions may be done virtually via Zoom. “Sometimes people just need a safe outlet to talk to someone,” said Pavlock. “It could be as simple as a lost job due to COVID.”

Diabetic Care When asked what health issues they see most, Pavlock and Courtney Galle, LSFHC Marketing and Communications Manager, were quick to name diabetes as one of the top diagnoses they see. To help those patients, glucose checks can be done at LSFHC, along with regular checkups to make sure medication is working properly and blood sugar levels are on track. Diabetic patients are also able to apply for discounted insulin prescriptions. Without insurance, the cost of insulin can be hundreds of dollars, and

Pavlock says people in poverty just can not afford insulin at full cost. Diabetic and nutrition classes are also offered (classes are hosted live in the Conroe office, but Walker County residents may log into Zoom and join the classes). “We try to educate our patients and help them learn how to live with diabetes,” said Pavlock.

Women’s Health LSFHC offers a variety of services for women’s health, including basic well woman exams. First, free breast cancer screenings and exams are offered. Once the screening is done, mammogram orders are given which can be filled at the patient’s desired location or through The Rose, a 3D mobile mammography service, which travels to the clinic and provides free mammograms. Gynecology services are also offered, such as cervical cancer screenings, pap smears, and pregnancy testing.

In the fall, LSFHC Huntsville will be joining the other satellite offices in the annual “Don’t Miss the Bus” back to school health campaign. The clinic will offer designated times where underinsured or uninsured children can get free well child visits and vaccines in time for school. Pavlock said they also offer discounted rates for lab work such as routine blood tests, bloodwork for prostate screening, pregnancy tests, and other common lab work.

In the technology department, LSFHC is keeping up with the times for heart patients. A new state of the art electrocardiogram (EKG) machine is available in the Huntsville office to monitor and evaluate possible heart problems in a patient. When asked what else makes LSFHC unique, Pavlock’s answer was simple. “We’re family here, and we will take care of you like you are part of our family,” said Pavlock. “We all go above and beyond for our patients.”

Wildlife Wonders THE PRETEND “RATTLER”

Many people have a fear of snakes. Is it the way they look, the way they move, or the fear that the snake is venomous? Snakes are not slimy and are actually cool and dry to the touch. The slithering movements are just the way they get around. Their scales drag against the ground and propel them forward. Yes, some of them are venomous, but of the 115 species of snakes in Texas, only 4 are venomous—the cottonmouth, rattlesnakes, copperheads, and coral snakes.

The Texas rat snake is medium to large and can get up to 6 feet long. Depending on location, their coloration varies. Snakes in eastern Texas are greyer, while those in central Texas are yellower. All of them have reddish-orange skin under their scales with white or grey bellies. Their heads are grey.

The most common snake in our area is the Texas rat snake, which is a subspecies of the rat snake. They love living in the suburbs where they spend most of their time in oak trees. They are perfectly camouflaged, so chances are you will not even notice them. They’re great climbers and can scale a brick wall.

Texas rat snakes can lay up to 20 eggs which hatch in about 2 months. The female leaves the eggs unattended once she lays them.

Rat snakes are beneficial as one of nature’s best forms of pest control. Rats and mice don’t stand a chance against rat snakes. They also dine on lizards, squirrels, frogs, and birds.

Sometimes, the Texas rat snake is misidentified as a rattlesnake. As a defense mechanism, they will hiss and shake their tail to imitate a rattlesnake. There is nothing to make the rattling sound, however, so their ruse is quickly discovered. They are somewhat aggressive snakes and can bite--but remember, they are non-venomous. Their bite is very weak and often leaves nothing more than a scratch.

You don’t have to love snakes, but we should learn to live in harmony with them. Negative biases towards snakes can lead to harmful actions like killing them unnecessarily. As with most wild animals, snakes are normally very wary of humans; biting is usually a last-ditch effort to protect themselves.

Along the Road FOUNDERS MEMORIAL CEMETERY

Founders Memorial Cemetery is a two-acre site located just west of downtown Houston and is the Bayou City’s oldest cemetery. Originally known as the City Cemetery, it opened in 1836 and at that time was located approximately one mile from the outskirts of the city. A majority of the interments occurred in the 1800s. Some of the graves are listed as unmarked. As of 2020 more than 130 individual graves had been identified. By 1840 the cemetery was nearly full. In April 1936 it was officially renamed Founders Memorial Park and was restored by the San Jacinto Centennial Association, with twenty-eight burials marked by Texas Centennial monuments summarizing the biographies of veterans of the battles for Texas independence and officers of the Republic of Texas. The precise plots of many of the graves of those honored were unknown,

therefore the monuments were placed in random locations throughout the park. In 1947 the Houston Parks and Recreation Department began to maintain the cemetery. Notable individuals from the early history of Texas buried in Founders Memorial Cemetery include Houston co-founder John Kirby Allen and his brother George Allen as well as Rebecca Lamar (mother of Mirabeau B. Lamar). A number of veterans of the Texas revolution, including signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence and veterans of the battle of San Jacinto, were laid to rest here, including Robert Barr, James Collinsworth, John W. Moore, Isaac N. Moreland, and Henry Livingston Thompson. The cemetery was designated a Historic Texas Cemetery by the Texas Historical Commission in 2005.

Mustard Seed Moments by Linda W. Perkins

Refreshed by the Son Coming in from the backyard, all I could think about was the scorching temperature outside. The sun had beaten down on me until my face turned red and sweat poured from my body, soaking my t-shirt. I couldn’t wait to take a shower and cool off in the air conditioning. While my vegetable garden was doing well, I didn’t really care about it at that moment. In that moment, I truly understood the phrase “heat exhaustion.” I was hot and drained and didn’t care if I ever left the house again. As I sat on the sofa, cooling down with a glass of sweet tea, I reflected on recent days. So many things had just kept piling on. I felt overwhelmed and oh, so tired. I needed more than just A/C and a cold drink to make me feel better. I needed refreshment from the inside out. I needed Jesus. I picked up my pink leather-bound devotional book and opened it up. “Come to me, all who are weary, and I will give you rest,” I read. Yes, Lord, I seriously need some rest, I prayed. “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.” Yes, I needed the living water Jesus was offering. “Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you.” Okay, I was ready. I had been walking through fire, carrying a heavy load, and I was ready to lay it at Jesus’ feet.

As I bowed my head and meditated on the Word, I felt my stress melt away. I realized the Holy Spirit was doing for me what I could not do for myself. God’s grace was lifting me up when I had no strength left. And when I opened my eyes, I knew I had been restored. I had needed a whole lot more than cool air and a glass of tea, and the Lord had delivered. I had been refreshed by the Son, and I was ready to take on whatever life – including the heat of summer and my circumstances – threw my way. “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.” – Psalm 55:22 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28 “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” – John 7:37-38
