On August 5, 2022, twenty-five national qualifiers from the Texas Junior High Rodeo Association were granted the opportunity of a lifetime. The contestants and their families took a trip to the Texas State Capitol where they were welcomed by Governor Greg Abbott and District 18 State Representative, Ernest Bailes. The lady behind the scenes who helped coordinate this event, Rachel Odell, says, “The (THSRA) National Team has gone before... But, this is the first time junior high has gone.”

visits the Texas State Capitol and meets Governor Greg Abbott

Odell states that Representative Bailes and his staff offered a first class experience for the young cowboys and cowgirls. They planned a day that consisted of everything from sitting in the Supreme Court Justices’ chair to being escorted to the floor of the House Chamber. According to Odell, being admitted to the House Chamber floor is a unique opportunity because one must only be permitted by escort of a House Member. Not only did the contestants gain insight as to what happens within the walls they were standing between, but they were also able to have conversations with Representative Bailes about all things rodeo and agriculture. Representative Bailes is no stranger to farming and ranching. In fact, he makes part of his living in agricultural production. He was able to effectively communicate with the contestants and their families the issues that he faces in his position. “The bills that he discussed with the team and the examples he used resonated with the members of the team,” proclaims Odell. Because of his powerful communication, he was able to instill into the group an eagerness to get involved in political activities. Representative Bailes was the epitome of a proper host and made sure the experience was unforgettable even though Governor Abbott was unable to greatly participate. Unfortunately, Governor Abbott had some important business to tend to that day and was absent for a majority of the visit. However, the kids still managed to steal a couple moments with him to present him with a 100x silver belly hat with his name stamped on the inside. This hat was graciously donated by American Hat Company.

“We were really excited to give him a gift because he is the only reason we were able to have a state finals in 2020 (during Covid-19),” says Odell. The trip ended with a TJHRA National Team picture with Governor Abbott holding the team’s trophy front and center. Odell believes that the trip had a positive impact on the contestants and their families and hopes to continue going back to Austin in the following years. She claims that in the midst of their busy day, she hopes the contestants took away some valuable information and obtained memories that they will remember for years to come.Article written by: Tylie McDonlad

“I really appreciate the staff of the State Fair, their long hours, and hard work to put this deal together,” said Jerry P. Hill of the United Professional Rodeo Association. “Our board of directors, members, stock contractors, personnel, and rodeo committees have worked so hard to better the association and the sport of rodeo. It takes a lot of work to put together a project of this size, and we are excited for our contestants, stock contractors, committees, and personnel. This is the beginning of another great chapter of rodeo in Texas.

The top 15 contestants in bareback riding, ladies barrel racing, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, tie-down roping, team roping, women’s breakaway roping, and bull riding, along with the highestranking rookie in each category, will compete for more than $200,000.

UNITED PROFESSIONAL RODEO ASSOCIATION YEAR-END FINALE

Each performance will feature eight contestants nightly, with all contestants competing on Saturday –either in the matinee or evening performance. The event will feature three rounds with plans of moving to additional rounds in the future. The rodeo will take place during the 2022 State Fair of Texas in the historic Fair Park Coliseum, home of the first National Finals Rodeo in 1959. The UPRA Year-End Finale Rodeo will feature six performances starting Tuesday, October 18, and running through Saturday, October 22 at 6:30 p.m. with an additional performance at 2:00 p.m. on “TheSaturday.Fair is incredibly honored to be hosting such a prestigious event,” said Daryl Real, senior vice president of agriculture and livestock for the State Fair of Texas. “Last year Fair Park Coliseum was the host to UPRA Texas Regional Series Finale and bringing the Year-End Finale of the UPRA this year provides an opportunity for fairgoers to witness the best rodeo has to offer. We’re beyond proud to be the new home of the UPRA Year-End Finale.”

The State Fair of Texas is proud to welcome the Year-End Finale of the United Professional Rodeo Association (UPRA) to the Fair Park Coliseum this October as part of the Fair’s rodeo lineup. The UPRA Year-End Finals will feature several rodeo events that are open to the public, along with a Hall of Fame induction ceremony and the crowning of Miss UPRA.
