More than 2,000 riders, runners, walkers and volunteers banded together in the Lake Nona Town Center to raise more than $886,000 that will send children to diabetes camp, fund research and coordinate advocacy programs. A Laureate Park address also means residents have easy access to the array of amenities in Lake Nona, such as the LP FIT gym, the resort-style Aquatic Center, Canvas Restaurant & Market, the Lakehouse event venue, the Amazing Explorers Academy, Laureate Park Elementary and Heroes City Park as well as an assortment of dog parks. It’s also only a short drive or bike ride to the facilities in Lake Nona Medical City. Nona Adventure Park is a new, unique experience that will also be within walking distance. Scheduled to open later this year, the park will feature a solar-powered water ski and wakeboard cable park, along with an inflatable aqua park and a 60foot climbing tower with a ropes course and climbing walls. “It’s easier to be able to walk to something and not have to pack everybody in the car, and just go down to the community pool,” says resident Stephanie Terrill. “Walkability is very important.”  2 0 1 8

ntertainment options are exploding in Lake Nona, the innovative masterplanned community in southeast Orlando perhaps best known for its Medical City, a high-tech cluster of hospitals, athletic training complexes and research facilities. Tavistock Development Company is tackling some immense projects to bring more experiences to the burgeoning healthcentered community of 17 square miles. “It’s about trying to be as current and as forward thinking as possible to continue the next great American community,” says Ralph Ireland, vice president of development operations. Tavistock makes Lake Nona residents a priority while also seeking to position the community as a regional destination. Either way, unique experiences are in focus for the 4 million-square-foot Lake Nona Town Center, which is blossoming at the southwest corner of State Road 417 and Lake Nona Boulevard. The Town Center’s $300 million, 1.2 million-square-foot second phase is under construction. Plans include a brewery, a bowling alley, a comedy club, an upscale cinema and plenty of shopping and dining options — all within walking distance for many residents. At full build-out, the Lake Nona Town Center will include more than 80 specialty retailers, anchors, junior anchors and restaurants. “It’s already a game changer,” Ireland adds. “We see it as a framework for additional development.” The Town Center’s first phase boasts two Marriott brands under the same roof — a Marriott Residence Inn and a Courtyard by Marriott. It also encompasses the Chroma Modern Bar + Kitchen, Bosphorous Turkish Cuisine, JACQ & JACK Salon, Barbershop and Espresso Bar featuring Lineage Coffee Roasting and The Beacon, an eye-popping, 60-foot structural steel sculpture alongside the Code Wall parking garage. The Code Wall on the garage’s facade is “perforated” with the 0’s and 1’s of binary code, spelling out Lake Nona’s vision and community key words in addition to choreographed LED lights and glass panels reflecting sunlight. The Lake Nona Town Center already is a popular gathering spot for a drink, a bite of food and a fun time with family and friends. “The retail environment is changing quite a bit, and people want an experiential environment,” Ireland says. “It’s a very walkable environment — measured to the inch so you don’t feel overwhelmed or underwhelmed by the space.” Walkability, of course, is healthy for residents and visitors. Another hangout option is the Drive Shack, which opened its first U.S. location on the northwest corner of State Road 417 and Lake Nona Boulevard in Lake Nona’s Sports & Performance District. It’s a three-story, 57,000-square-foot driving range with 90 outdoor driving bays. It also houses restaurants, bars, meeting rooms and an expansive free-play arcade lounge. Drive Shack is part of a golf entertainment company, Drive Shack Holdings LLC, founded by partners Newcastle Investment Corp. and TaylorMade Golf Company Inc. In the heart of Lake Nona’s entertainment, dining and shopping district, the Town Center Hotel will boast a sleek exterior, a grand motor court entrance, a sophisticated lobby and a ballroom, plus a rooftop pool and lounge with private event capabilities. It will also offer frequent connections to nearby Orlando International Airport, through which some 72 million visitors pass every year. Not far from the Town Center, Lake Nona residents have two new community parks built by Tavistock Development Company: McCoy City Park and Heroes City Park. Water sports will be available for all ages at Nona Adventure Park, to be located next to Heroes City Park in the Laureate Park neighborhood. solar-powered water ski and wakeboard cable park in the world. Located just south of the Orlando VA Medical Center, Nona Adventure Park also will include an inflatable aqua park, a 60foot climbing tower with a ropes course and climbing walls, a pro shop featuring equipment rentals and sales, and an upscale café. Lake Nona will soon be home to the next generation of fitness facilities. So much more than a gym, the Lake Nona Wellness Center will be a combined sports performance institute, medically integrated fitness facility and community wellness destination. The innovative wellness, performance and medically integrated fitness facility is being created in partnership with Signet and its subsidiary, Integrated Wellness Partners. The 110,000-square-foot center, to be in the Town Center’s second phase, will be fully outfitted with first-class equipment as well as a sprint track, an indoor climbing wall, and indoor and outdoor pools — among other amenities. The center will offer health and wellbeing programs tailored to every fitness level, providing customized programs for residents, families and elite athletes. Featuring a personalized approach, the center will offer each member a data-driven fitness program and profile updated in real time. n emerging Sports & Performance District is reshaping Lake Nona, bringing world-class athletic facilities and new experiences to the fast-growing community. The United States Tennis Association National Campus celebrated one year as the “Home of American Tennis” in Lake Nona. As the anchor of the Sports & Performance District, the campus is one of the largest tennis facilities in the world.

With 100 tennis courts spread across 64 acres, it offers unparalleled playing, training and educational experiences for recreational players, competitive players, coaches and spectators. The facility brings together the association’s Community Tennis and Player Development divisions, along with the Florida branch of USTA and the national training site for USTAcertified officials. Programming is offered for players at every level — from amateur to pro. It’s a place dedicated to learning, playing and improving the game. It’s also is the home of the University of Central Florida’s varsity tennis program. “It’s an incredible platform for us to raise the bar for how we deliver tennis,” says Kurt Kamperman, the USTA’s chief executive for community tennis. “We’re truly using this campus as a campus. coach high-performance players and organize events.” Despite its enormous size, the campus isn’t a concrete jungle. The association had plenty of land to separate the courts, leaving ponds and landscaping to create a park-like setting. Kamperman sees it as a “metropolis” with smaller, self-sufficient neighborhoods devoted to different aspects of the game — such as family tennis. Some of the courts are made of a specific red clay that comes only from Cremona, Italy. Wanting only the best, the USTA had 450 tons of it shipped to Lake Nona. The lifeblood of the tennis facility is the programming available to local residents on a daily basis. With after-school and weekend youth programming, daily adult sessions and camps for kids and adults, hundreds of Central Florida tennis players are using the courts. 2 0 1 8

Reflecting on the epic performance of the USTA National Campus in 2017, USTA President Katrina Adams says the impact of the project has been bigger than she ever imagined — and she promises even more in the coming years. “To say this has been an amazing year for the USTA National Campus would be an understatement,” says Adams, who’s also CEO and board chairman. “When we set out to create this place, we wanted to design a facility that would be all things to all levels of players. That’s a pretty large challenge — but working as a team we rose to that challenge in an equally large way.” Indeed. The campus hosted more than 100 local, regional, national and international events in 2017, ranging from community events and Junior Team Tennis National Championships to USTA Pro Circuit events and collegiate conference tournaments. The campus has attracted more than 200,000 players and visitors. At one end of the spectrum, more than 500 youngsters under the age of 18 participate each week in youth programs. At the other end, the campus embraced its role as the new home of USTA Player Development, welcoming more than 600 current and aspiring professional tennis players who were assisted by Team USA coaching, training and medical staffers. In total, more than 150,000 hours of court time were booked for players of all ages and abilities last year — and that number is only expected to grow in 2018. Current and former pros who visited include Bob and Mike Bryan, Ivan Lendl, James Blake, Jack Sock, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lake Nona residents Madison Keys, Donald Young, CiCi Bellis and Frances Tiafoe. Competitors and spectators alike have easy access to the campus because of its proximity to Orlando International Airport. Nearby medical facilities offer plenty of synergies for sports organizations. For example, Nemours, which operates a children’s hospital in Medical City, has partnered with the Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, based near Pensacola, to become the campus’ official medical providers. FUTURE SHOW HOME INCORPORATES HEALTHY LIVING WITH HIGH-TECH ADVANCES.

A showcase home in Lake Nona is taking that community’s wellness emphasis a step further by demonstrating how technology can help residents monitor and improve their health in everyday life. In this smart home — called WHIT (Wellness Home Built on Innovation and Technology) — the island countertop in the kitchen helps you make healthful meals. Plus, the air is purified in six stages to help you breathe. The therapeutic aroma generated in the living room is designed to help you stay calm, while in the home office the aroma helps you focus. WHIT, a townhome in Laureate Park by Craft Homes, is a project of the Lake Nona Institute, the nonprofit think tank housed in the Tavistock-created community. It’s open to visitors for interactive tours without charge. The institute planned and outfitted the home with nine corporate partners. Some of the features are prototypes; others are in the marketplace. Part exhibition and part laboratory, WHIT is one way the institute is evaluating wellness technologies for Lake Nona and beyond. “We want to see what moves the needle in health and wellness,” says Gloria Caulfield, the institute’s executive director. “What are the scalable solutions in a variety of different environments? They have to be cost-effective and applicable everywhere, not just in Lake Nona. “If the kitchen is the heart of today’s new homes, then the prototype interactive island designed by GE Appliances is the heart of the WHIT kitchen. The large “intelligent surface” of the island helps users plan, cook and shop for nutritious meals. GE designed the interactive island with input from Lake Nona residents. It incorporates family members’ food preferences and dietary needs. In the kitchen and elsewhere, many of WHIT’s health features work in the background. Cork flooring, for example, was chosen because it’s antimicrobial, resistant to mold and easy on the feet. Air and water purifiers filter out pollutants, and the home’s insulation offers a higherthan-usual level of sound protection. In every room, there are gadgets galore. n Using “predictive analytics,” a wearable sensor called the CarePredict Tempo can help identify changes in the activities of older people that might signal a health concern. A weight sensor in pill containers helps track whether a patient has kept up with his or her medication. Germ-killing UV lights in one of the bathrooms work to kill germs. n CareConnect from Nemours, which operates a children’s hospital in Medical City, allows kids to see a pediatrician via interactive video, using an iPad or other device. A special thermometer gives doctors reliable readings, and various products help residents manage conditions such as diabetes and asthma. n Circadian lighting by Delos provides levels of light that follow the body’s natural patterns — without a blast of harsh light if you wake up at 3 a.m., to go to the bathroom, for example. Delos, a research and consulting company, “curated” numerous other products for the home, and they’re available at its online StayWell shop. Those include air purifiers and aromatherapy machines; a vitamin C shower-head infuser that reduces chlorine in the water for softer skin and hair; and advanced memory-foam mattresses that don’t have the objectionable fumes often associated with that material. Peter Scialla, the company’s chief operating officer, says Delos has had a longstanding partnership with Lake Nona that includes StayWell rooms in the two hotels at the Lake Nona Town Center. WHIT should provide “a lot of market insights on which of these [features] are attractive to consumers,” Scialla says. Sensor technology is gradually making it possible for devices in the home to respond to the people who live there, he says. Adds Scialla: “We’re close to an environment that can read the human body.” Still, WHIT doesn’t rely on digital technology alone. Part of the home is a throwback to a simpler time when people produced and prepared their own food. A courtyard off the kitchen doubles as a stress-reducing meditation space and garden. Although the institute spent two years developing WHIT, in some ways it’s just getting started. The garage behind the house will serve as an ongoing laboratory for home wellness innovation in collaboration with UCF. “Many other companies have had great products start in the garage,” Caulfield notes. “We have a white, blank canvas to do that in.” Caulfield says WHIT will be ever-changing: “We don’t want it to be static, and we don’t want it to be a museum. If you come back in six months or three months, you’re going to see different things.” 

 Orlando VA Medical Center: Serving more than 110,000 veterans in Central Florida, the medical center is open for outpatient, inpatient and emergency services and is in the final stages of opening additional inpatient beds and other specialty services. The VA’s newest state-of-theart healthcare facility encompasses 134 acute inpatient beds, providing complex medical/surgical/mental health specialty care, advanced diagnostic services, a 120-bed Community Living Center, a 60-bed Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program, and a large multispecialty outpatient clinic.  University of Central Florida College of Medicine: UCF’s Health Sciences Campus, which opened in 2010, includes a 170,000-square-foot medical education facility and the 198,000-square-foot Burnett Biomedical Sciences building. The M.D. program enrolls more than 400 students. In addition, the college includes approximately 3,000 undergraduates and graduate students in the biomedical sciences, including biotechnology, medical laboratory sciences and molecular biology. There’s also a Publix pharmacy for patients, their families and employees.  University of Florida Research and Academic Center: The state’s flagship university has a 115,000-squarefoot facility that houses a clinical research unit of its Institute on Aging — a program that studies, among other things, drug interactions in the elderly. It also houses the Orlando campus of the UF College of Pharmacy. The emphasis is on clinical research related to diabetes and cardiovascular disease as well as obesity. Through the UF Institute of Therapeutic Innovation, also at Lake Nona, researchers are conducting trials to help develop new anti-infectious disease drugs.  Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute: Previously known as the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, the $85 million, 175,000-square-foot facil-

ity opened in 2009 as the first Medical City cornerstone. It encompasses the Diabetes and Obesity Research Center, where scientists focus on metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity as well as on Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. The institute’s East Coast campus — the main campus is in La Jolla, California — is also home to the Conrad Prebys Center for Chemical Genomics, where researchers work to identify and develop new medicines. Earlier the institute announced that it was no longer economically feasible to operate a Florida facility. However, at press time it appeared likely that UCF would create a comprehensive cancer research and treatment center at the facility, with a focus on basic and translational research.
