WELCOME TO LAKE NONA Orlando’s fastest growing community with more than 14,000 residents, Lake Nona is a 17-square-mile, master-planned community that’s home to a wide variety of unique, desirable and walkable neighborhoods. From apartment homes — including the Orlando market’s first micro-units — to colorful townhomes, modern active-adult condos, sustainable single-family homes and sprawling estate homes, there’s truly something for everyone. Lake Nona is designed to foster wellbeing and promote activity, sustainability, social connection and learning. Recognized by the Global Wellness Institute as “the most sophisticated example in the world of what master-planning for wellness can accomplish,” Lake Nona was built from the ground up with a commitment to the health of residents. It’s an intergenerational, family-friendly ecosystem with 40 percent green space, parks on every corner, pools in every neighborhood, dedicated cycling lanes and more than 44 miles of trails. This neo-urban environment inspires institutions, people and businesses to thrive. To that end, Lake Nona is education-obsessed. A collaborative learning environment is designed to give students the ability to engage in realtime interactions with researchers, doctors, professors and businesses within the community. Top-rated schools, from early childhood to the graduate level, serve more than 14,000 students. In addition, Lake Nona was the first gigabit community in Florida, offering residents lightning-fast internet speeds up to 200 times faster than the U.S. average. Each year, the Lake Nona Impact Forum convenes more than 250 thought leaders from business, academia, government and industry sectors who are driving creative, innovative health and wellness solutions, which move the needle on health care expenditures nationally and globally. The gathering is committed to unlocking innovation to create sustainable health communities and advance quality of life by exploring the intersections of wellness, sustainable living and education. Home to Medical City, diverse workspaces, recreational facilities and a thriving Town Center, Lake Nona is an inspired vision brought to life by Tavistock Development Co., an award-winning, diversified real-estate firm owned by Tavistock Group. ON THE COVER: The Beacon, adjacent to the Lake Nona Town Center’s parking garage, is wrapped with high-definition video projections that bring it to life at night. Its design was inspired by early stethoscopes. The garage’s facade, dubbed the Code Wall, is perforated with the 0’s and 1’s of binary code, and adorned with choreographed LED lights and glass panels that reflect sunlight. Also shown are other homes, businesses and institutions that are encompassed within Lake Nona. Laureate Park, with streets named for Nobel Laureates, is the largest and fastest-growing community in Lake Nona. or Chelsea Gonzalez, moving to Laureate Park was like stepping into a dream. “It’s so wonderful coming home to a place I would think maybe doesn’t really exist — but it does,” says Gonzalez. “The community that I have here is unbelievable. I feel so at home.” That sense of belonging also resonates with other residents throughout the community, which was thoughtfully designed to include walking trails, dog parks, community gardens, amenities, parks — and friendly neighbors. “Because of the way Laureate Park was designed, we know more people in this neighborhood than we’ve ever known in any of the other neighborhoods we’ve lived in,” says resident Robert Laszlo. Located in the heart of Lake Nona, Laureate Park is characterized by its modern design, abundance of intelligent features, proximity to amenities, walkability to schools and strong sense of community. With streets named for Nobel Laureates, the community is the largest and fastest-growing in Lake Nona. Buyers are attracted by a wide variety of housing options. Laureate Park offers homes starting in the high $200s, while a gated subsection, The Preserve by Taylor Morrison Homes, offers estate homes starting in the high $400s. Seven builders offer dozens of unique floorplans throughout the community of brightly colored bungalows, townhomes, cottages and multistory homes. “You drive into Laureate Park and the first thing you see is color, and I just love that,” says resident Paula Roman. Roman clearly has a good eye for quality. Her neighborhood won a prestigious Aurora Award in 2017 for Residential Housing Community of the Year Masterplan. In addition, it won a 2017 Silver Award for Master Planned Community in The Nationals, a competition sponsored by the National Association of Home Builders. In addition, Laureate Park builder Craft Homes won the Grand Aurora Award for Best Single-Family Detached Home: 2,500 to 2,999 Square Feet. Education is key for parents raising families in Laureate Park. The new Laureate Park Elementary School just ended its first school year. Amazing Explorers Academy — a STEM-based preschool to teach kids about science, technology, engineering and math — recently opened in Laureate Park Village Center. The neighborhood also offers a chess club, art classes, workshops and group exercise classes for kids. Lake Nona is also Florida’s first gigabit community, with internet speeds 200 times faster than the U.S. average. Conceived as a “wired-in, future-evoking” neighborhood, Laureate Park’s WHIT (Wellness Home built on Innovation and Technology) show home highlights how technology can foster healthy living. Not only is Laureate Park connected online, its residents are connected personally. The response to last year’s Hurricane Irma, for example, showed just how powerfully the community can come together. MC8 S P E C I A L R E P O R T : L A K E N O N A

As the storm made its way toward Florida, the Laureate Park “Help Mob” leapt into action. With neighbors helping neighbors, volunteers went door to door to move furniture inside, secure household items and provide other assistance. In the days that followed, the Help Mob displayed generosity and compassion while working to clean up damaged trees and other debris. Laureate Park residents were the founding members of Nona Cycle — a popular philanthropic club. Nona Cycle, which organizes weekly rides for cyclists, helped lead the neighborhood effort to join the 2018 Tour de Cure in Lake Nona to raise money 2 0 1 8

Among the cool components of Laureate Park is Glass House (top), located near Canvas Restaurant & Market (above left). It’s a kaleidoscopic work of installation art conceived and constructed by Brooklyn-based artist Tom Fruin, who has used reclaimed materials to celebrate urban design and American folk art. Lake Nona has 44 miles of trails (above right), many of which weave their way through Laureate Park.

for the American Diabetes Association. More than 2,000 riders, runners, walkers and volunteers banded together in the Lake Nona Town Center to raise more than $886,000 that will send children to diabetes camp, fund research and coordinate advocacy programs. A Laureate Park address also means residents have easy access to the array of amenities in Lake Nona, such as the LP FIT gym, the resort-style Aquatic Center, Canvas Restaurant & Market, the Lakehouse event venue, the Amazing Explorers Academy, Laureate Park Elementary and Heroes City Park as well as an assortment of dog parks. MC10 S P E C I A L R E P O R T : L A K E N O N A

It’s also only a short drive or bike ride to the facilities in Lake Nona Medical City. Nona Adventure Park is a new, unique experience that will also be within walking distance. Scheduled to open later this year, the park will feature a solar-powered water ski and wakeboard cable park, along with an inflatable aqua park and a 60foot climbing tower with a ropes course and climbing walls. “It’s easier to be able to walk to something and not have to pack everybody in the car, and just go down to the community pool,” says resident Stephanie Terrill. “Walkability is very important.”  2 0 1 8

ntertainment options are exploding in Lake Nona, the innovative masterplanned community in southeast Orlando perhaps best known for its Medical City, a high-tech cluster of hospitals, athletic training complexes and research facilities. Tavistock Development Company is tackling some immense projects to bring more experiences to the burgeoning healthcentered community of 17 square miles. “It’s about trying to be as current and as forward thinking as possible to continue the next great American community,” says Ralph Ireland, vice president of development operations. Tavistock makes Lake Nona residents a priority while also seeking to position the community as a regional destination. Either way, unique experiences are in focus for the 4 million-square-foot Lake Nona Town Center, which is blossoming at the southwest corner of State Road 417 and Lake Nona Boulevard. The Town Center’s $300 million, 1.2 million-square-foot second phase is under construction. Plans include a brewery, a bowling alley, a comedy club, an upscale cinema and plenty of shopping and dining options — all within walking distance for many residents. At full build-out, the Lake Nona Town Center will include more than 80 specialty retailers, anchors, junior anchors and restaurants. “It’s already a game changer,” Ireland adds. “We see it as a framework for additional development.” The Town Center’s first phase boasts two Marriott brands under the same roof — a Marriott Residence Inn and a Courtyard by Marriott. It also encompasses the Chroma Modern Bar + Kitchen, Bosphorous Turkish Cuisine, JACQ & JACK Salon, Barbershop and Espresso Bar featuring Lineage Coffee Roasting and The Beacon, an eye-popping, 60-foot structural steel sculpture alongside the Code Wall parking garage. Indeed, the attention that developers paid to the garage — often the most basic type of building — may provide hints of what’s to come. The Beacon sculpture is wrapped with high-definition video projections that bring it to life at night. The Code Wall on the garage’s facade is “perforated” with the 0’s and 1’s of binary code, spelling out Lake Nona’s vision and community key words in addition to choreographed LED lights and glass panels reflecting sunlight. The Lake Nona Town Center already is a popular gathering spot for a drink, a bite of food and a fun time with family and friends. “The retail environment is changing quite a bit, and people want an experiential environment,” Ireland says. “It’s a very walkable environment — measured to the inch so you don’t feel overwhelmed or underwhelmed by the space.” Walkability, of course, is healthy for residents and visitors. But it also helps reduce the community’s carbon footprint and mitigates a proliferation of automobiles. S P E C I A L R E P O R T : L A K E N O N A  MC13

Lake Nona’s Town Center features a multiplex cinema (top) as well as a Drive Shack, a three-story, 57,000-square-foot driving range with 90 outdoor driving bays (left) and a soon-to-come Adventure Park (similar to the one pictured above) located just south of the Orlando VA Medical Center.

Another hangout option is the Drive Shack, which opened its first U.S. location on the northwest corner of State Road 417 and Lake Nona Boulevard in Lake Nona’s Sports & Performance District. It’s a three-story, 57,000-square-foot driving range with 90 outdoor driving bays. It also houses restaurants, bars, meeting rooms and an expansive free-play arcade lounge. Drive Shack is part of a golf entertainment company, Drive Shack Holdings LLC, founded by partners Newcastle Investment Corp. and TaylorMade Golf Company Inc. In the heart of Lake Nona’s entertainment, dining and shopping district, the Town Center Hotel will boast a sleek exterior, a grand motor court entrance, a sophisticated lobby and a ballroom, plus a rooftop pool and lounge with private event capabilities. It will also offer frequent connections to nearby Orlando International Airport, through which some 72 million visitors pass every year. Not far from the Town Center, Lake Nona residents have two new community parks built by Tavistock Development Company: McCoy City Park and Heroes City Park. Water sports will be available for all ages at Nona Adventure Park, to be located next to Heroes City Park in the Laureate Park neighborhood. Nona Adventure Park will feature the first MC14 S P E C I A L R E P O R T : L A K E N O N A

solar-powered water ski and wakeboard cable park in the world. Located just south of the Orlando VA Medical Center, Nona Adventure Park also will include an inflatable aqua park, a 60foot climbing tower with a ropes course and climbing walls, a pro shop featuring equipment rentals and sales, and an upscale café. Lake Nona will soon be home to the next generation of fitness facilities. So much more than a gym, the Lake Nona Wellness Center will be a combined sports performance institute, medically integrated fitness facility and community wellness destination. The innovative wellness, performance and medically integrated fitness facility is being created in partnership with Signet and its subsidiary, Integrated Wellness Partners. The 110,000-square-foot center, to be in the Town Center’s second phase, will be fully outfitted with first-class equipment as well as a sprint track, an indoor climbing wall, and indoor and outdoor pools — among other amenities. The center will offer health and wellbeing programs tailored to every fitness level, providing customized programs for residents, families and elite athletes. Featuring a personalized approach, the center will offer each member a data-driven fitness program and profile updated in real time. This will be a unique wellness experience, and one of the most comprehensive in the region.  2 0 1 8

Lake Nona is home to the United States Tennis Association’s National Campus, billed as the largest tennis facility in the world. The 64-acre campus has 100 lighted courts, all of which have livestreaming capability, for training and competition.

A WORLD-CLASS SPORTS DISTRICT, HOME TO THE USTA, IS FLEXING ITS MUSCLES.

n emerging Sports & Performance District is reshaping Lake Nona, bringing world-class athletic facilities and new experiences to the fast-growing community. The United States Tennis Association National Campus celebrated one year as the “Home of American Tennis” in Lake Nona. As the anchor of the Sports & Performance District, the campus is one of the largest tennis facilities in the world.

With 100 tennis courts spread across 64 acres, it offers unparalleled playing, training and educational experiences for recreational players, competitive players, coaches and spectators. The facility brings together the association’s Community Tennis and Player Development divisions, along with the Florida branch of USTA and the national training site for USTAcertified officials. Programming is offered for players at every level — from amateur to pro. It’s a place dedicated to learning, playing and improving the game. It’s also is the home of the University of Central Florida’s varsity tennis program. “It’s an incredible platform for us to raise the bar for how we deliver tennis,” says Kurt Kamperman, the USTA’s chief executive for community tennis. “We’re truly using this campus as a campus. We want to train people who want to teach tennis, MC16 S P E C I A L R E P O R T : L A K E N O N A

coach high-performance players and organize events.” Despite its enormous size, the campus isn’t a concrete jungle. The association had plenty of land to separate the courts, leaving ponds and landscaping to create a park-like setting. Kamperman sees it as a “metropolis” with smaller, self-sufficient neighborhoods devoted to different aspects of the game — such as family tennis. Some of the courts are made of a specific red clay that comes only from Cremona, Italy. Wanting only the best, the USTA had 450 tons of it shipped to Lake Nona. The lifeblood of the tennis facility is the programming available to local residents on a daily basis. With after-school and weekend youth programming, daily adult sessions and camps for kids and adults, hundreds of Central Florida tennis players are using the courts. 2 0 1 8

Lake Nona is the soon-to-be-home of a $430 million training center for the international accounting firm KPMG, set to open in late 2019.

Reflecting on the epic performance of the USTA National Campus in 2017, USTA President Katrina Adams says the impact of the project has been bigger than she ever imagined — and she promises even more in the coming years. “To say this has been an amazing year for the USTA National Campus would be an understatement,” says Adams, who’s also CEO and board chairman. “When we set out to create this place, we wanted to design a facility that would be all things to all levels of players. That’s a pretty large challenge — but working as a team we rose to that challenge in an equally large way.” Indeed. The campus hosted more than 100 local, regional, national and international events in 2017, ranging from community events and Junior Team Tennis National Championships to USTA Pro Circuit events and collegiate conference tournaments. The campus has attracted more than 200,000 players and visitors. At one end of the spectrum, more than 500 youngsters under the age of 18 participate each week in youth programs. At the other end, the campus embraced its role as the new home of USTA Player Development, welcoming more than 600 current and aspiring professional tennis players who were assisted by Team USA coaching, training and medical staffers. In total, more than 150,000 hours of court time were booked for players of all ages and abilities last year — and that number is only expected to grow in 2018. Current and former pros who visited include Bob and Mike Bryan, Ivan Lendl, James Blake, Jack Sock, Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lake Nona residents Madison Keys, Donald Young, CiCi Bellis and Frances Tiafoe. Competitors and spectators alike have easy access to the campus because of its proximity to Orlando International Airport. Nearby medical facilities offer plenty of synergies for sports organizations. For example, Nemours, which operates a children’s hospital in Medical City, has partnered with the Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, based near Pensacola, to become the campus’ official medical providers. Just steps away, another major project is taking shape. Tavistock Development Co. is building an iconic resort and spa MC18 S P E C I A L R E P O R T : L A K E N O N A

along the southern shore of Lake Nona. The eight-story Lake Nona Resort will feature cutting-edge design and top-tier amenities, such as a major fitness and spa campus, a massive beach volleyball venue, one of the nation’s largest man-made crystal-clear lagoons and custom-designed guest rooms and condominium units. “With Orlando now approaching 72 million annual visitors, it is a very competitive hotel market with many exceptional properties and operators,” says Tavistock Development Co. President Jim Zboril. “With our proximity to the airport, this facility will not only serve the Lake Nona community but will also provide a unique addition to the Central Florida region. Lake Nona has become synonymous with innovation and wellbeing, and the creation of this iconic resort highlights our dedication to building a holistic environment for residents, businesses and visitors.” Inspired by Lake Nona’s forward-thinking mission statement — to “create the ideal place that inspires human potential through innovative collaboration” — the resort will offer the highest level of healthy living in a resort setting, appealing to athletes, business travelers, weekend warriors and families seeking an escape with an abundance of healthy activity, rejuvenation and relaxation. The hotel’s design and offerings complement the community’s healthy living initiatives. The resort joins recent community anchors including the USTA National Campus, KPMG’s state-of-the-art learning, development and innovation facility, as well as Johnson & Johnson’s Human Performance Institute, through which a longitudinal community health and wellbeing study, the Lake Nona Life Project, is being conducted. Construction of innovative medical and sports facilities makes a big statement. But a focus on healthy living was woven into all of Lake Nona — and it’s evident in more subtle ways, too. The community features 44 miles of trails for walking and biking, and 40 percent of the land will remain undeveloped, creating green, open space that promotes a sense of wellbeing and connectivity with nature.  2 0 1 8

Someday Starts Today

Saying that a community is a great place to “live, work and play” has almost become a cliché these days. But at Lake Nona, it’s not a slogan. It’s an essential aspect of what the community’s all about.

WELCOME Home

H

LAKE NONA’S NEIGHBORHOODS ARE BREAKING RECORDS AGAIN.

ome sales are hotter than ever in Lake Nona. In fact, the community had its best year to date in 2017, says Craig Collin, senior vice president of Tavistock Development Company. And 2018 likely will be another record-breaker. Lake Nona consistently has ranked among the 20 top-selling master-planned communities in the U.S. “We couldn’t be more excited about the pace and sheer volume of sales we’ve had this year within the active neighborhoods at Lake Nona and the Lake Nona Golf & Country Club,” Collin says.

Beyond Lake Nona’s wide selection of exceptional homes, the community offers an unparalleled lifestyle — neighborhoods with premier amenities, tons of events and an ambiance that promotes happy, healthy living. Laureate Park, Lake Nona’s largest and best-selling neighborhood, concluded 2017 with 360 sales. Among those contracts were single-family homes, townhomes, cottages and urban bungalows situated among pocket parks and trails. MC20 S P E C I A L R E P O R T : L A K E N O N A

Builders in the neighborhood include Ashton Woods Homes, Craft Homes, David Weekley Homes, Dream Finders Homes, Pulte Homes, Minto Communities and Taylor Morrison Homes. Custom-home options are available from Arturo Barcelona Homes, Issa Homes, Phil Kean Designs and Envy Homes. But there’s much more. Somerset Park’s single-family homes are sold out, and the Mediterranean-inspired Enclave at VillageWalk, by Pulte Homes, continues to be in demand. 2 0 1 8

Sales within the Lake Nona Golf & Country Club totaled more than $44 million, making it a banner year for residential real estate in the highly regarded Central Florida locale. One of the top private golf and country clubs in the world, it features a Tom Fazio-designed championship golf course, a clubhouse, a lodge, a Bath & Racquet Club, year-round children’s programming and 24-hour gated security. “Our diversification and innovation in product types continues to be a strong draw for a variety of homeowners,” says Rob Adams, vice president of residential development. “We like to have different products that appeal to different people. By broadening our appeal, we grow our sales. We cast a wide net.” That’s why Lake Nona offers single-family homes, townhomes, luxury apartments and custom estates at a wide range of price points, he adds. That net has now been cast even wider. Lake Nona’s first active-adult community, Gatherings of Lake Nona, built by Beazer Homes, is preparing to welcome the community’s first residents. Offering a variety of amenities and programming, the activeadult community is located near the state-of-the-art Orlando VA Medical Center. Gatherings of Lake Nona offers more than 200 condominiums with prices starting in the high $200s. Lake Nona’s newest multifamily community, Ariel Apartments, features 348 one-, two- and three-bedroom urban-style apartments with plenty of indoor and outdoor amenities — including a 24-hour fitness club featuring Technogym equipment, virtual classes, a zero-entry pool and an expansive dog park. Another rental community, Pixon at Lake Nona, is located within walking distance of the Lake Nona Town Center. It’s a 200-unit modern flat community set to open in 2019. Pixon features an impressive list of innovative community conveniences, including a car-share program with Tesla vehicles and a concierge delivery system. It will have retail space on the ground floor and the Orlando market’s first micro apartment units. Lake Nona residents throughout the community have access to one of the richest programming calendars in the country — with more than 1,000 community events each year. Here’s a look at other neighborhoods within Lake Nona. n Lake Nona WaterMark is a luxury apartment complex anchored by a clubhouse with a resort-style pool, a fireside veranda, an outdoor kitchen and a business center. It’s located near the Drive Shack and the USTA National Campus. n LandonHouse Apartments is the residential anchor of the Lake Nona Town Center and provides a vibrant, urban lifestyle. Residents can rent one-, two- or three-bedroom apartments, or choose an open studio floorplan. n Ariel Apartments is Lake Nona’s newest luxury apartment community. Located on the western portion of the community, Ariel Apartments feature one-, two- and three-bedroom units. Each resident can access 1GB high-speed internet service and a 24-hour fitness club featuring Technogym equipment. n Somerset Park, which is now sold out, is a gated neighborhood featuring stylish two-story home collections from Century Homes and M/I Homes. Located just minutes from Medical City, the neighborhood offers a wide variety of home styles with amenities that include a community pool and cabana, playground and walking trails.

Lake Nona has a residential option for just about everyone, including three apartment complexes. Those include (from top): LandonHouse Apartments, Ariel Apartments and Pixon at Lake Nona. The area around Lake Nona will see unprecedented growth for the foreseeable future. A number of builders have announced plans for new communities, although prices and products weren’t available at press time. Mattamy Homes will bring Randal Walk and Meridian Parks to the market, and Park Square Homes has Canoe Creek Crossing in the works. But perhaps the most anticipated newcomer is Tohoqua, a Mattamy Homes community located east of S.R. 417 and south of S.R. 528. It’s being marketed as a scenic, health-conscious community. The planned Village Center will feature a health and wellness complex, a farm-to-table produce market and inhall dining. The community, which spans more than 2,500 acres, will at build-out encompass 4,000 single-family homes, 2,000 multifamily homes and 500,000 square feet of office/retail space. NEW MASTER-PLANNED COMMUNITY TO FOCUS ON PRESERVATION, INNOVATION. Tavistock Development Co. — the mastermind behind Lake Nona — has launched another major project in Central Florida. Sunbridge, a 24,000-acre master-planned community, will include a diverse range of neighborhoods, employment centers and commercial districts. Located east of Lake Nona, it will straddle Orange and Osceola counties. A community focused on preservation and innovation, Sunbridge will feature vibrant employment centers that will serve as a regional economic driver with a talent pool of residents that will attract leading companies and innovative ideas. Premier active-adult builder Del Webb is planning the first residential project, a gated, 700-acre neighborhood called Del Webb Sunbridge to be located near Narcoossee Road in northwest Osceola County. It could include more than 1,350 homes. Del Webb, a national brand of PulteGroup, Inc., is a pioneer in active-adult communities and would bring more than six decades of homebuilding experience to Sunbridge. Ground could be broken later this year, with model homes anticipated to open in the summer of 2019. “Del Webb has been the premier active-adult homebuilder in the nation for more than 60 years,” says Rob Adams, vice president of residential development for Tavistock. “Their track record of creating vibrant, active places will be a wonderful addition to Sunbridge.” While still in the early planning stages, Sunbridge will incorporate best practices from Tavistock’s award-winning portfolio, including Lake Nona, which ranks among the bestselling master-planned communities in America and was heralded in Fortune magazine as “the future of cities.” For more information, visit sunbridgefl.com.  2 0 1 8

WHIT is an acronym for Wellness Home Built on Innovation and Technology. Located in Laureate Park, it’s open for tours.

STEP INTO THE

FUTURE SHOW HOME INCORPORATES HEALTHY LIVING WITH HIGH-TECH ADVANCES.

A showcase home in Lake Nona is taking that community’s wellness emphasis a step further by demonstrating how technology can help residents monitor and improve their health in everyday life. In this smart home — called WHIT (Wellness Home Built on Innovation and Technology) — the island countertop in the kitchen helps you make healthful meals. Plus, the air is purified in six stages to help you breathe. The therapeutic aroma generated in the living room is designed to help you stay calm, while in the home office the aroma helps you focus. WHIT, a townhome in Laureate Park by Craft Homes, is a project of the Lake Nona Institute, the nonprofit think tank housed in the Tavistock-created community. It’s open to visitors for interactive tours without charge. The institute planned and outfitted the home with nine corporate partners. Some of the features are prototypes; others are in the marketplace. Part exhibition and part laboratory, WHIT is one way the institute is evaluating wellness technologies for Lake Nona and beyond. “We want to see what moves the needle in health and wellness,” says Gloria Caulfield, the institute’s executive director. “What are the scalable solutions in a variety of different environments? They have to be cost-effective and applicable everywhere, not just in Lake Nona. “If the kitchen is the heart of today’s new homes, then the prototype interactive island designed by GE Appliances is the heart of the WHIT kitchen. The large “intelligent surface” of the island helps users plan, cook and shop for nutritious meals. GE designed the interactive island with input from Lake Nona residents. It incorporates family members’ food preferences and dietary needs. In the kitchen and elsewhere, many of WHIT’s health features work in the background. Cork flooring, for example, was chosen because it’s antimicrobial, resistant to mold and easy on the feet. Air and water purifiers filter out pollutants, and the home’s insulation offers a higherthan-usual level of sound protection. In every room, there are gadgets galore. MC24 S P E C I A L R E P O R T : L A K E N O N A

n Using “predictive analytics,” a wearable sensor called the CarePredict Tempo can help identify changes in the activities of older people that might signal a health concern. A weight sensor in pill containers helps track whether a patient has kept up with his or her medication. Germ-killing UV lights in one of the bathrooms work to kill germs. n CareConnect from Nemours, which operates a children’s hospital in Medical City, allows kids to see a pediatrician via interactive video, using an iPad or other device. A special thermometer gives doctors reliable readings, and various products help residents manage conditions such as diabetes and asthma. n Circadian lighting by Delos provides levels of light that follow the body’s natural patterns — without a blast of harsh light if you wake up at 3 a.m., to go to the bathroom, for example. Delos, a research and consulting company, “curated” numerous other products for the home, and they’re available at its online StayWell shop. Those include air purifiers and aromatherapy machines; a vitamin C shower-head infuser that reduces chlorine in the water for softer skin and hair; and advanced memory-foam mattresses that don’t have the objectionable fumes often associated with that material. Peter Scialla, the company’s chief operating officer, says Delos has had a longstanding partnership with Lake Nona that includes StayWell rooms in the two hotels at the Lake Nona Town Center. WHIT should provide “a lot of market insights on which of these [features] are attractive to consumers,” Scialla says. Sensor technology is gradually making it possible for devices in the home to respond to the people who live there, he says. Adds Scialla: “We’re close to an environment that can read the human body.” Still, WHIT doesn’t rely on digital technology alone. Part of the home is a throwback to a simpler time when people produced and prepared their own food. A courtyard off the kitchen doubles as a stress-reducing meditation space and garden. Although the institute spent two years developing WHIT, in some ways it’s just getting started. The garage behind the house will serve as an ongoing laboratory for home wellness innovation in collaboration with UCF. “Many other companies have had great products start in the garage,” Caulfield notes. “We have a white, blank canvas to do that in.” Caulfield says WHIT will be ever-changing: “We don’t want it to be static, and we don’t want it to be a museum. If you come back in six months or three months, you’re going to see different things.” 

VISITING WHIT

WHIT is open to visitors free of charge by request. Visit MeetWhit.com to make an appointment. The home is located across from the Laureate Park Village Center at 8464 Tavistock Lakes Boulevard. In addition to the builder, Craft Homes, partner organizations that contributed to the project include American Well, Dais, Delos, GE Appliances, GuideWell, Nemours Children’s Health System, Sustainable Synergy, Technogym and the UCF College of Medicine. HERE’S WHY THEY CALL IT

MEDICAL CITY

Orlando VA Medical Center at Lake Nona

 Orlando VA Medical Center: Serving more than 110,000 veterans in Central Florida, the medical center is open for outpatient, inpatient and emergency services and is in the final stages of opening additional inpatient beds and other specialty services. The VA’s newest state-of-theart healthcare facility encompasses 134 acute inpatient beds, providing complex medical/surgical/mental health specialty care, advanced diagnostic services, a 120-bed Community Living Center, a 60-bed Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program, and a large multispecialty outpatient clinic.  University of Central Florida College of Medicine: UCF’s Health Sciences Campus, which opened in 2010, includes a 170,000-square-foot medical education facility and the 198,000-square-foot Burnett Biomedical Sciences building. The M.D. program enrolls more than 400 students. In addition, the college includes approximately 3,000 undergraduates and graduate students in the biomedical sciences, including biotechnology, medical laboratory sciences and molecular biology. The $175 million UCF Lake Nona Medical Center is being planned next to the medical school in partnership with the Hospital Corporation of America (HCA).  The GuideWell Innovation Center: The GuideWell Innovation CoRE (Collaborative Resource Ecosystem) is part of the 92,000-square-foot GuideWell Innovation Center. Its purpose is to connect entrepreneurs, research and development experts and healthcare leaders with ideas, funding and resources. “We’ll be working with early-stage companies, and helping incubate those companies while they’re developing new technologies and solutions for healthcare,” says Pat Geraghty, GuideWell’s chairman and CEO. The complex offers a variety of spaces designed to enhance interaction, including a 250-seat theater in the round, co-working space for start-ups and entrepreneurs, a “start-up garage” featuring the latest 3-D printing technology and industrial engineering expertise from MC26 S P E C I A L R E P O R T : L A K E N O N A

Edison Nation Medical. There’s also a living lab for testing new products and technology as well as an audiovisual production studio, an executive boardroom and a screening room.  Nemours Children’s Hospital: Established as The Nemours Foundation through the legacy and philanthropy of Alfred I. duPont, Nemours has grown into one of the country’s leading pediatric health networks. Since opening in Medical City in October 2012, Nemours has cared for children from 50 states and 68 countries, bringing new pediatric medical services to the region — including the only three fellowship-trained pediatric interventional radiologists in Florida and the region’s only Muscular Dystrophy Association Clinic. Throughout Nemours, more than 450 funded research projects and clinical trials are in progress under the direction of more than 100 Nemours physician-scientists, 25 Ph.D. center directors and more than 200 support staff. Nemours recently announced it’s starting its first three-year pediatric residency program, and is approved to take 12 doctors a year when the 2 0 1 8

program begins this summer. A Ronald McDonald House is on site, with accommodations for families who have children being treated at the hospital. There’s also a Publix pharmacy for patients, their families and employees.  University of Florida Research and Academic Center: The state’s flagship university has a 115,000-squarefoot facility that houses a clinical research unit of its Institute on Aging — a program that studies, among other things, drug interactions in the elderly. It also houses the Orlando campus of the UF College of Pharmacy. The emphasis is on clinical research related to diabetes and cardiovascular disease as well as obesity. Through the UF Institute of Therapeutic Innovation, also at Lake Nona, researchers are conducting trials to help develop new anti-infectious disease drugs.  Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute: Previously known as the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, the $85 million, 175,000-square-foot facil-

ity opened in 2009 as the first Medical City cornerstone. It encompasses the Diabetes and Obesity Research Center, where scientists focus on metabolic diseases such as diabetes and obesity as well as on Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. The institute’s East Coast campus — the main campus is in La Jolla, California — is also home to the Conrad Prebys Center for Chemical Genomics, where researchers work to identify and develop new medicines. Earlier the institute announced that it was no longer economically feasible to operate a Florida facility. However, at press time it appeared likely that UCF would create a comprehensive cancer research and treatment center at the facility, with a focus on basic and translational research. The university is reportedly bringing in three partners: the Sarah Cannon Research Institute, which is Hospital Corporation of America’s cancer research division; Provision Healthcare, a network of cancer centers and developer of next-generation proton beam therapy; and Alter+Care, an Illinois-based development and investment company to establish and fund the project.  S P E C I A L R E P O R T : L A K E N O N A  MC27
