Cowboys adding new pieces

here will be a lot of new faces making plays for the Brownsville Porter Cowboys this season. It’s not a rebuilding year, said coach Carlos Uresti; it’s just about reloading. Porter has six starters returning, but only two on the offensive side of the ball. Offensive lineman Jonathan Alvarado and receiver Gunnar Williams will be the veterans leading the way and helping incoming junior quarterback Alex Stevens run the offense. “We’re starting from scratch on the offensive side of the ball, but we’re comfortable with the guys we’re plugging in. We’re going to be young, but (offensive coordinator Farrell Williams) does a good job with the kids and we’ve got them rolling,” Uresti said. “The offensive line, that’s the group that has surprised me the most. At quarterback, we have Alex Stevens stepping in right now. He’s a kid that’s been in the system and understands the offense, and we’re very comfortable with him going forward.” Senior defensive end Arath De La Torre will be the focal point for the Cowboys’ defense. Defensive back Isai Hernandez and junior lineman Sam Moreno are showing the young guns the ropes, too. Uresti said he always feels comfortable with Porter’s defense every season and believes the group will be ready to roll when the season begins. “The sophomores and juniors that are going to play this year to fill those see COWBOYS H 26
