Tadashi Endos Biography Tadashi Endo Tadashi Endo director of the Butoh-Center MAMU and the Butoh-Festivals MAMU in Gรถttingen - embodies in the truest sense of that word the wisdom of both, the Western and Oriental dance and theatre traditions. His repertoiry includes No theatre, Kabuki and Butoh, as well as the traditional forms of Occidental theatre, which he studied at the Max-Reinhard-Seminar in Vienna. In this synthesis of worldwide traditions, Tadashi Endo transcends the boundaries of each, although butoh's trancelike absorption into oneself continues to be visible as the stating point of his movement. In his extraordinary dances, Tadashi Endo succeeds to express the fields of tension between Ying and Yang, the male and femal and their ever lasting alteration. He uses the suggestive power of concentrated movement phrases to explore the closure of life's cycles. He opens up a voide space, which can be either calming or irritating, and in the experience of which the observer submerges him-/herself into a world beyond time and words: that is MA. (MA means in Zen-buddhism:"emptyness" and "the space between the things".)

In 1989 Tadashi Endo met Kazuo Ohno for the first time and they both realized a deep mental relationship which is increasing since then. Tadashi Endo dances his life, his dreams, his feelings in his very special movements and deep expression. He is touring all around East- and West-Europe, USA and Japan.

His repertory includes No theatre, Kabuki and Butoh, as well as the traditional forms of Occidental theatre, which he studied at the Max-Reinhardt-Seminar in Vienna. In this synthesis of worldwide traditions, T. He uses the suggestive power of concentrated movement phrases to explore the closure of life's cycles. He opens up a voide space which can be either calming or irritating, and in the experience of which the observer submerges him-/herself into a world beyond time and words: that is MA. MA in ZEN-Buddhism means "emptyness" and "space between the things". Butoh MA is the way to make the unvisible visible. The minimum of movements lets the expression of feelings and situations grow to highest intensity. It is more important to keep the balance between energy, tension and control, than to care for the ethetics of the movements. MA means to be IN BETWEEN. MA is the moment just at the end of a movement and before the beginning of the next one.

MA is like standing on the riverside watching the water floating along. You want to reach the other side but the other side means death. You want to finish your life on this side but not yet, you are half here and half over there. Your soul is waiting for the last step - completely calm - without breathing - completely quiet not dead and not alive - this is MA. What does it mean - MAMU? MAMU is the combination of the two words in Zen-buddism Ma and Mu MA - means space in between MU - the big emptiness But the sound of MAMU seems to be like the first word of a baby. MAMU Manifest MAMU 1 Child from a mammut Child out of rotten things MAMU 2 Power, which is always rising, ever and everywhere, in the air, in the sand, in the steam, in red and white. MAMU 3 MAMU exists and does not exist. Events, which disappear and will be born, hiding and showing themselves. MAMU 4 MAMU is an other country, born in the chaos of crossings and activites, MAMU is another body. MAMU 5 Shy - hesitating Like a cat - identifying with hesitating, - with hesitating realizing the differences. MAMU 6 To recognize all differences and drifting along with affirmation, this power is HUMOUR. MAMU 7 Big like a mammut, tiny small like a mammut -child Living in wild sensitivity.

MAMU 8 About Butoh Butoh is everywhere -MAMU is everywhere. Grasping all threads, which lead through MAMU to Butoh, through Butoh to MAMU. MAMU 9 New horn, new fingernails, new hair, new breast, new lips, new knees, new eyeapples and new soles of the feet. MAMU 10 The key which leads to MAMU opens your new body and your new house and leads you to new ways, new journeys, and new dreams, to new ethic. MAMU 11 OUT in IN To walk beyond your own limits. MAMU 12 MAMUbird, MAMUcloud, MAMUfruits and fruitstones, MAMUhills, MAMUvoice Discover. Tadashi Endo & Ko Murobushi

Butoh-MA Workshop Butoh-MA Workshop TADASHI ENDO, elève of the great butoh dancer Kazuo Ohno, found his own way of dance which he calls “Butoh - MA”. MA is a very important word in zen buddhism, which has two meanings: the “emptyness” and “the space between the things”. When Tadashi Endo is teaching, it is not only hard warming up, improvisations and

choreographical work, he also tries to give a deap view into the butoh philosophy, tells a lot about what Kazuo Ohno and Tatsumi Hijikata were thinking and about their lives as “butoh-ist”. But first of all he always tries to let the students search for their own butoh. Like Kazuo Ohno says: ”everybody can dance Butoh” but may be not the Japanese butoh. Everybody can find his/her own movements in the sense of butoh. To succeed in this resesarch you need emptiness so that new ideas and new imaginations with new patterns of movements can grow in your mind and in your body. Butoh-MA is the way to make the invisible visible. The minimum of movements lets the expression of feelings and situations grow to highest intensity. It is more important to keep the balance between energy, tension and control than to care for the esthetics of the movements. "The dancer shall not dance - but schould be danced" Tadashi Endo has the position as a guest professor at the Hochschule für Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main, Germany, The Academy of Music and Dance in Jerusalem, Israel, and at the Nucleo Interdisciplinar des Pesyuisas TeatrUnicamp, University Campinas, Brazil.

Tadashi Endo and Pina Bausch got to know each other through their friendship to Peter Kowald (double bass) and to the great Butoh-Master Kazuo Ohno. They all had the same wish: with their art. they wanted to bring love and humanity into this world Thoughts about IKIRU "Life and death are so close to each other. If there is no life there is no death.Birth ist he first step to death. Pina Bausch died.Michael Jackson died.Kazuo Ohno died. It is frightening - death is coming closer. It makes me so sad, when I realize that important artists, who have given some influences in my own work, suddenly are gone - for ever. But it makes me also very strong. This very moment I have to start to go on much stronger than before. I have the feeling that I have to work much more, much deeper. As I saw Pina Bausch in „Kaffee Müller“ - blind and unsure, weak but strong to overcome all hurdles (chairs) with the imperturbable wish to reach the goal. I was so impressed, I can never forget this scene. Pina Bausch gave dance another spirit and another dimension. Pina Bausch will live for ever through her dance and her idea of expressive dance theatre. IKIRU is dedicated to Pina Bausch. Thank you Pina. Thank you Kazuo Ohno
