consistent with the specific levels of natural and cultural freedom expressed by it. Among the properties that projects can develop through this kind of interactions with the landscapes, that of adaptation is probably the most important, from which also depends that of resilience. Both of these properties are conditioned by the functional capabilities that the projects give to the landscapes in which they act, recognizing and preserving the existing ones or by integrating quality and quantity where missing. From this point of view, a limitation to contain it is due to the functional specialization of spaces and to its morphological and material translation in them. The project is called upon to solve problems that require to fulfill functions such as flood and water protection, acoustic and atmospheric protection, microclimatic regulation, visual mediation, separation of conflicting uses and many other environmental and social categories, with significant economic repercussions. This does not coincides with spatial compositions stiffened by mechanistic separations due to an excess of functional specialization. The research of sustainability by design does not require separate ways and directions other than the expressiveness, but integrations. The defect of expressivity is a specific defect of sustainability; in fact the lack of expressiveness has a cultural and social relevance and the sustainability is an environmental, economic, social and cultural resultant. “Design with Nature” (Mc Harg, 1969) is therefore a cultural option to enhance the functional, expressive and adaptive properties of landscapes.
