ZC gives cash aid to fire survivors Vol. 2, No. 2
The City Government Tuesday released some P214, 000 worth of financial assistance to victims of a fire incident that broke out in Campo Islam October 20 last year. Acting Mayor Rommel Agan spearheaded the distribution of the cash assistance to the 57 families displaced by the fire during simple rites held in City Hall Tuesday morning. Agan said the cash aid is in addition to the relief assistance earlier provided by the City Government. The amount will help alleviate the plight of the affected families, he said. is facilitated by the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) following the conduct of assessment and validation of names of victims. The amount given to each family was based on the damage incurred as stipulated in a resolution of the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC). Court sentences 6 fishers to prison over illegal fishing within ENIPAS site The 6th Municipal Circuit Trial Court of Labason-Gutalac-Kalawit sentenced six (6) fishermen to an imprisonment of a maximum of two years and minimum of one year over compressor fishing within Murcielagos Island Protected Landscape and Seascape (MIPLS) in Labason, Zamboanga del Norte. Compressor fishing is a violation against Section 18, paragraph e of the Expanded National Integrated Protected Areas System Act or R.A. No. 11038, which includes among the prohibited acts within the protected area the use of any fishing and harvesting gear and practices that destroy coral reefs, seagrass beds, or other marine life
and their associated habitats. Coral reefs are some of the most biodiverse systems in the world. Aside from providing habitats and shelter for many marine organisms, they also protect coastlines from the damaging effects of wave action and tropical storms. Five of the accused were ordered to be detained at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology Liloy, Zamboanga del Norte pending the approval of their application for probation. On the other hand, the cash bail bond of one of the accused shall remain valid and effective pending the approval of his application for probation. Turn to Page 5

Saavedra along with other key government officials from Davao have left mid-January for said program, which is a combination of executive leadership especially “on preventing terrorism in Southeast Asia”. They were welcomed at the US Embassy in Manila by US Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission John Law on January 10. The US Department of State’s Bureau of Counterterrorism also posted on Twitter a photo of Duterte-Carpio and Climaco along with Ambassador Nathan Sales, who they met for discussions on efforts against terrorism and violent extremism in Mindanao.
