A LETTER FROM EDITOR Welcome back to another edition, Dialoguers!

What is ELESP? This question might have popped up in your mind. Well, now, it is time to get to know ELESP deeper. Dialogue raises the theme “All about PBI (Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris)” or most students here refer to it as ELESP (English Language Education Study Program), my beloved department. My team and I are enthusiastic to show you all the enormous impressive things inside ELESP. First of all, I would like to say that ELESP has captured my heart. All the great moments I have always involve ELESP. I meet cool lecturers who are kind-hearted and zealous to bring me to my greatest and even unlock unrealized potential. Surely, I can also learn precious knowledge from them. Pssst, some of them even become friends with whom I can laugh and talk to whenever I find difficulties. Don’t worry! They always patiently listen and help their students solve the problems. Another remarkable thing as an ELESP student is I can get into varied communities, programs, and organizations in order to hone my skills, experience new things professionally, pursue my passions, and the cherry on top you meet amazing companions. Doesn’t it sound excellent? You can get friends and take invaluable advantages.

In this edition, we provide additional information on what makes English Education and English Literature majors different for those who still have no clue. We also note some job opportunities that are up for grabs for ELESP graduates’ in the future with the purpose of breaking down the wrong stigma that ELESP graduates can only be a teacher.

Furthermore, to add more insights, ELESP cool lecturers also have shared their inspirational stories and wisdom. The last but not least, as usual, we present useful tips and ELESP secrets just for our dearest Dialoguers.

1. English Club (EC) First, we have the EC or the English Club. It’s obvious that English Club is considered a must-have club in ELESP. It’s like the trademark of ELESP itself. English Club provides a platform to practice and improve your English skills through various programs. EC mainly focuses on each members’ development. Other than grammar, pronunciation, and basic English skills, it offers English learning in an entertaining way too.

You could hone your abilities in story-telling, speech, debate, and poem reading. Needless to say that this is a club for you who are eager to sharpen your public speaking skills, right?

than studying? Say no more. Here, we are going to describe a selection of six student clubs in ELESP Sanata Dharma that will definitely catch your interest.

As you know, we need experiences and certificates for our student’s points. Certainly, it’ll help you a lot if you join one of the student clubs. However, don’t just use that as a reason to join a club. We promise that in these clubs you’ll make new friends and have unforgettable moments in your college years. All of these clubs are worry-free because they are all freshman-friendly. What are you waiting for? Let’s check them out then!

COMMUNITY

2. PBI Choir If you like singing in the shower and have an obsession with recording your own voice and listening to it, this is the club that is suitable for you. It’s not a bad thing to do it, but if you can turn your hobby into an amazing talent, why not? PBI Choir holds the most members of all clubs and you can get into some exclusive events if you join them. A few years ago, they also brought home many championships. Don’t dance to someone else’s tune, call the tune fellas. You’ll get unforgettable moments and experiences here.

4. EEPro EEPro is an abbreviation for English Education Production. Here, they prioritize drama shows and theatre on the stage of ELESP art. It’s obvious that this is the only club that will break the atmosphere of an event. EEPro is also family-like, and every member has good chemistry with the others. If you join EEPro, you will unlock new knowledge about drama, stage, backstage, acting skills, and speaking skills. You’ll definitely achieve new self-confidence here. If you are too shy, remember that most of the members are newbies from the start. Hugh Jackman (The Wolverine) once was a party clown before he became a successful actor. Don’t be afraid and be ready to hold the stage!

3. E-Fo E-Fo, which stands for English Focus, is a club for you; young photographers, videographers, and models models models*. Hunting photos, a.k.a Hun-Fot is super exciting here. Commonly, E-Fo members experience a thrilling adventure in nature and travel for Hun-Fot purposes. Their projects, besides having fun, include making movies and documentations of prestigious events in ELESP. E-Fo guarantees the happiness of each member. Don’t worry if you are a rookie, your friends in E-Fo will guide you all the way to the top.

What if you don’t have a camera? Not a problem, they will provide you with a camera until you get the one of your dreams.

5. I-Diamond What comes to your mind when you read this club’s name? This is not a community for a gold/diamond digger in ELESP. I-Diamond is a community to gather students’ aspirations and a link between ELESP students and lecturers. I-Diamond produces wall magazines that feature the latest information about ELESP. This is the most up-to-date club of all and definitely benefits all ELESP citizens. By joining I-Diamond, you can upgrade your soft skills and creativity. Usually, they determine their issue by having some chit-chats among members. All opinions are welcomed and respected here. This is the right place to build your creativity. The motto of this club is “Creativity Takes Courage” and we couldn’t agree more on that, right?

6. Dialogue Dialogue is a club that produces magazines twice a year, every April and October. Although this is a student club like the others, the system here is like working. We have our creative reporters, editors, and lay-outers. Dialogue is special because the magazines that we produce have the official license (ISBN). If you join us, your writings and your work will be officially published in the mass media. You can also write down your working experiences from here. Our most exciting activity is Journalism Over Coffee (JOC). It’s a journalists’ seminar that is usually held at a cafe.

o have fun does not mean that we have to go outside and chill out with family and friends. We can also have fun inside our homes.

This will push us to be more creative, as we are expected to find a way to fulfill our desire and release our stress. Even though we are in the middle of the pandemic, we can still grab our snacks, play games, and have fun at home with our loved ones. One of the things we can do for now is watch movies. These are some of the movies that I recommend watching during this pandemic, at home.

The Social Dilemma

Extremely relatable to today’s society, this documentary is about how pernicious social media can be. It is not an accident, a bug, nor a coincidence. It IS a feature. Social media are designed to be addicting and profitable for the companies themselves. Even though on the surface, they label the platform as “free”, there are still consequences for the users to pay.

What kinds of consequences, you wonder? One of the most identifiable things is that it makes you prone to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. People with these disorders can easily develop feelings of self-harm and even suicidal thoughts. In social media, we are exposed to others’ activities, and we become so obsessed with our looks, intelligence, and life achievements. As a result, people are racing against each other to be “the best of them all”., our brain is being “hacked” by the A.I.s into thinking that we should satisfy our urge to become “perfect”.

The documentary is deep, meaningful, and well-made. It has visuals that accompany us throughout our journey watching the documentary so that we can easily follow the story and the things the narrators say. It is done by presenting a side story about a family whose children are addicted to their phones. As the people who were ex-workers of the said social media companies explain, parts of the story are inserted. There is also a little twist of humanoid “A.I.s” visual representations that are very helpful for those who have a hard time grasping some of the terms that tell what happens “behind the screens”. Yes, pun intended. You can watch this movie on Netflix starting from January 26th, 2020.

I did not expect anything from this movie when I first watched it, but the movie turned out to be amazing! What eye candy. It is energetic and fun to follow, despite the common premise that the creators used – robots taking over the world. The visuals are great. Sometimes the effects even resembled the style of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse – lots of 2D doodle elements–, it still has its unique touch and it adds to the story. The energy of this movie also matches how quirky and messy Katie, the main character, is.

However, it got mixed reviews on Google, while in most movie-review websites, it got fairly high scores at around 77 on IMDB up to 98 on Rotten Tomatoes. This might happen because people judged the movie before it was fully released. Previously known as “Connected”, the fans were glad that they changed it into the recent one (The Mitchells vs The Machines), as mainstream media – especially movies – nowadays already used too many one-word titles. Sure, one-word titles can be rather ambiguous and cool, but they chose to step out of the crowds and used a multiple-word title, which is not a bad thing! You can watch this movie on Netflix starting from April 30th, 2021.

Together, we can have fun while protecting others. By following the protocols, in this case, is not going out except it’s an emergency or a special cause, we can protect the people around us, including our families! Have fun and stay safe!

The Mitchells vs. The Machines

O

ne of our aims as students is to continue our education through college. Of course, when we enter college, we have a variety of majors to choose from. Furthermore, consider majoring in English if you are interested in languages. The study of English itself encompasses a wide range of topics. It covers everything from literature analysis to English instruction or effective corporate communication. One of the benefits of majoring in English is the diversity it provides. Consequently, majors in literature and teaching are frequently confused.

They do, however, contain some significant distinctions.

Basically, the English Education department aspires to train high-quality English instructors, while the English literature department strives to produce academics who can master both oral and written literary aesthetics. Let’s dive deeper into how those two differ from each other!

Graduate Degree The first visible difference is the degree title. Graduates majoring in English Literature get an “S.S” (Bachelor of Letters) degree. On the other hand, graduates majoring in English Education get an “S.Pd” (Bachelor of Education) degree since this major lies under the auspices of the teaching faculty.

Courses If you major in English Literature, you will study the literary faculties of drama, poetry, English culture, pragmatics, and others. You will frequently study literary arts including theatre, cinema, poetry, and novels.

Linguistics, English literature, and translation will be the primary subjects you will study.

In contrast, in English Education, you will not study the culture and history of the English language. You shall, however, concentrate on how to teach and learn English.

Even though grammar, listening, and other skills will not be the primary focus at first, they must be learned.

The courses you will get include teaching curriculum, curriculum management, and education management, how to teach English effectively, and resources that will be given to students. You will naturally learn more about technical learning than literature.

Job Opportunities In English Letters, skills such as translation, writing, and literary analysis will serve as your basis. Thus, you will be able to pursue careers as a writer, literary critic, translator, public speaker, and writer, among other things.

Additionally, you have the option of working at the embassy or getting engaged in politics. Interesting, isn’t it?

Graduates with a degree in English Education, on the other hand, are often stereotyped as future teachers. That, however, is completely incorrect. Indeed, you concentrate on finding work in the English field, but you actually have additional options. Not much different from literature, you can also be an editor, translator, or even a writer since in English Education you will have various elective courses ranging from Mass Media Communication to Translation. Although your opportunities will be greater in the field of teaching such as teachers, lecturers, and instructors, you can still be a flexible scholar. As long as you use your English skills and explore other skills, you can get any job.

We know English has been one of the essentials in education, on the same level as mathematics, and sciences.

This language has become an important requirement for jobs and careers along with free trade. Hence, for those of you who have an interest in becoming proficient in English language to take advantage of potential career opportunities, you may have to choose a study program related to the science of English. Consider the courses you seem to fit in. Go for the major that is closest to your heart and mind. Most importantly, choose that one if that brings you delight.

I

f you are thinking about choosing an English Education major at Sanata Dharma University -mostly known as ELESP --, you might be wondering what kind of work you will do after graduating. Do you have to be an English teacher? Do you have to be involved in school institutions? Of course not, you don’t have to. In this major, you can take many courses and learn many new things outside of the educational scope, yet the courses are still related to English. For example, you can take a creative writing course that deals with writing literary works. By doing so, there are many future paths you can choose freely in ELESP, they are: Teacher English takes a vital place in our educational system and global work. As a result, schools now demand that their students learn to use English communicatively. This is where the role of a competent teacher is needed -mentoring students to improve their English skills. It is widely known that the primary focus of ELESP is to prepare its students to become competent English teachers. ELESP will drill you to master at least two things on that account: the language and techniques to teach the language itself. Thus, after graduating from ELESP, you can be an English teacher and empower young learners with your English knowledge.

Content Creator Are you interested in creating educational or entertaining content on social media? If so, at ELESP you can learn the various digital platforms and the usages by combining them with your creativity. Many courses in ELESP allow you to professionally create an array of content in an informative and engaging way. Moreover, since a content creator deals with written and spoken language, you can also advance your language skills to convey your message effectively, both orally and in writing.

STRIVEYOUR YOUR PASSION PASSION STRIVE Journalist Who says English Education students can’t become journalists? Nowadays, many organizations in Indonesia present their news in English. This is where you can contribute. ELESP has a course called Mass Media Communication where you can learn journalistic skills.

In this course, you can find out how to report, write, or even investigate information properly. Besides, there is Dialogue, an organization at ELESP, which facilitates you to have experience as a journalist. Interesting, isn’t it?

Interpreter Are you dreaming of being an interpreter at a conference? PBI courses and programs can polish up your language skills and teach the cultural specifics in the language at the same time. Equally important, you will not only learn how to translate, but also to convey the meaning in certain cultures.

English for Spesific (ESP) Trainer As its name suggests, ESP requires you to design learning that meets the specific needs of the learners.

ESP trainers usually assess what learners need in relevant skills or levels. One of the examples is the Business Writing course. By joining this course, you can see that there are differences in the vocabulary used in the business scope and general life. What should be remembered is ESP focuses on using language as a service not as a subject.

Linguist ELESP provides linguistics courses that will help you dissect the English language. When studying this course, you will analyze the phenomenon of word creation and how words and structures are created.

You can also research how languages differ from one another. As well as that you can also practice your English understanding.

Hospitality Industry Manager A good hospitality manager should acquire a high level of organizational skills and strong communication skills. Since you might deal with foreigners, English proficiency is mandatory. You do not have to be the staff who services the guests, but you can be on the learning department team that gets a chance to teach English to the staff. Behind the Scene of

hat is Dialogue magazine? Many students of ELESP are wondering about this one of PBI’s clubs. Some frequent questions are always coming from them, such as what Dialogue magazine is, how many times we produce the magazine, what the special features of Dialogue are, how long we have produced the magazine, etc. Surely, you can find that overall information in the community article. However, for this part, we want to deepen your knowledge about our Dialogue teams’ work in producing a magazine.

Let’s say this is spilling time from behind the scenes of Dialogue magazine.

As written in the community article, Dialogue Magazine is one of ELESP’s clubs which allows people to experience the perks of being a young journalist. In other words, Dialogue Magazine is a place for people who want to share their creativity in the field of journalism. We produce a magazine twice a year, in April and October. To produce a high-quality magazine, Dialogue teams should go through a long process to achieve it. We need around 5 months for producing one magazine each semester. There are nine major steps that we need to take before publishing a magazine, such as the article coverage, writing, editing, revising, proofreading, layout, reviewing layout, printing, and publishing.

Article Coverage and Writing Process After brainstorming and choosing the topic for the current edition, the time for reporters to work begins. We have around two weeks to collect the data for our articles. In general, Dialogue reporters have

Editing, Revising, Proofreading Process There are two steps for both the editing and revising process. After finishing the writing process, the next step is editing. In this stage, reporters should send their writings to the editors. Then, editors have a responsibility to check the articles entirely, starting with grammar, diction, the flow of each paragraph, whether it is coherent or not, and many others. The following week, editors send back the articles and the reporters should revise their errors. For these stages, we need around one month before the proofreading process. In the proofreading process, we usually ask for help from foreigners as our proofreaders.

Layouting and Reviewing Layout During the proofreading process, our layouters are working on designing the magazine. In around one month, they gather and work on designing every single article to make it more interesting, eye-catching, and engaging for readers.

Our main app for layouting Dialogue magazine is an indesign app but we also use other apps to enhance the design, such as adobe, Photoshop, CorelDraw, etc. After finishing the first layout, the next step is to review the layout together. At this time, not only layouters but all Dialogue teams should participate in reviewing the magazine’s layout.

We gather our ideas and comments on the first layout.

After that, the layouters revise it and repeat on reviewing the layout until we agree if it’s ready to print and publish.

The Last Step is the Printing and Publishing Stages The last step is the printing and publishing stages. In the printing stage, we need around one month before publishing and distributing magazines. After the printing stage is over, it doesn’t mean that our job is over either. We still have to distribute the magazines to the readers and contributors who already contribute to Dialogue magazine writing. We usually distribute the magazine to schools in Yogyakarta, other cities in Indonesia, and even send it abroad. Last but not least, to present a worthy magazine, we are happy to go through all those steps for you, readers. Happy reading.

an onus to look for the interviewees, do some research, and collect data and information to support their writing process. In this stage, reporters have some opportunities to interview famous people, such as artists, public figures, influencers, etc. This is a fun time to explore and collect the data. As a reporter, we can attend the seminar, concert, or many events that relate to our topics. Then, the next step is writing time. All reporters have one week to write their articles. It’s time for them to share their ideas, information, or people’s thoughts on their writing. This stage is quite tough for the reporters because they need to compose all the information they get and write the article with a word limit (600-1000 words).

H

aving been established more than 65 years ago, ELESP (English Language Education Study Program)/PBI (Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris) quality stands the test of time. PBI is preparing for international accreditation. It shows its credibility in guiding students to international access. Therefore, ELESP has made adjustments on curricular activities in response to the changing world.

The professors at PBI who facilitate students to get such access are Ms. Tri (Veronica Triprihatmini, M.Hum., M.A.), who leads ELESP as the chairperson alongside Ms. Henny (Henny Herawati, S.Pd., M.Hum., Ph.D.), the vice chairperson. They emphasized what the study program brings to the table; “You will be trained to be generous, appreciate diversity, love students and have reflective, adaptive, critical, communicative and collaboration skills”.

Owing to many benefits, ELESP does not limit students who require financial support to attend the program. “PBI definitely holds the spirit of having options for the poor,” Ms. Tri responded, regarding PBI’s generosity in assisting with the tuition of higher education. This is important to make the students who need additional help feel heard.

To make the spirit a reality, PBI cooperates with Bolsius Student Fund which is established by PBI’s alumni. Aiming to connect students in need of financial aid with BSF, ELESP makes the dream to pursue this undergraduate degree come true.

UP UPCLOSE & CLOSE ANDPERSONAL PERSONAL

Open Minded” and Study Program for g Opportunities Sufficient Learning Tools Providing a high quality of education is in line with having sufficient tools for the learning process. The reason is students need various tools to experience a convenient learning atmosphere. Furthermore, many courses require additional equipment for making their outcomes happen.

Owing to the PBI courses related to learning content design, this study program offers a Production Lab. “The students need more facilities to develop their creativity,” Ms. Tri mentioned as the basic reason for the Production Lab development. In hopes of levelling up creativity in the courses, the Production Lab serves students with sophisticated computers, laptops, cameras, and applications for more professionalism. Moreover, Ms. Tri explained that learning contents can be published and receive intellectual property rights.

Assisting with a well-equipped learning process doesn’t only involve one consideration about learning content. ELESP also accommodates students with computers and an internet connection in the Multimedia Lab. By providing enough facilities in the Multimedia Lab, PBI enables students to develop learning media, practice for TOEFL, and other functions related to relevant courses. Apart from those two programs, accreditation is also one important aspect to take in mind. Accreditation encourages institutions to attain and maintain high standards, increasing public trust and accountability. As a result, the third program to be deployed is ‘improving the quality of curriculum and learning process through intensification of the implementation of the OBE curriculum based on Ignatian Pedagogy and strengthening the reputation of the institution through international accreditation’. The study program aims to achieve two objectives through this program: to have an OBE curriculum based on Ignatian Pedagogy and to be recognized as a superior study program through FIBAA international accreditation.

Last but not least, the fourth program, ‘improving the study program governance through intensification and extensification partnerships at national and international levels’, centralizes documents management and partnership development. This project intends to create governance papers in collaboration with national and international partners.

Well join us in our journey as we outline our programs for the next three years. But firstly, let us rejoice, celebrate and congratulate the incredible English Language Education Study Program on getting a foundation grant from Dirjen DIKTI. Last June Direktorat Jenderal Pendidikan Tinggi (Dirjen DIKTI) Kementerian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan (Kemendikbud) had awarded ELESP Sanata Dharma University over one billion rupiah grant. The study program proudly gained the funding after competing with a number of different universities in the second league of Program Kompetisi Kampus Merdeka (PKKM). The sum of Rp1,297,460,000 is divided to fund the four programs proposed by ELESP Sanata Dharma University in 2021. Similar amount of money will be awarded for the next couple of years based on our performance.. These programs are planned to be implemented for three years commencing the 2021.

The first and foremost program is entitled ‘improving the quality of graduates through intensification of mentoring and extensification of partnerships at national and international levels’. Through this program, the study program seeks to reach the quality target of graduates by increasing the number of graduates who will find jobs, become enterpreneurs, or continue their studies. Along with that, ELESP also targets to enhance the number of students who spend 20 credits off campus or attain national recognition.

While it is crucial to improve the quality of the graduates, it is equally important to upgrade lecturers’ competence. Thus the second program, improving the quality of lecturers through intensification and extensification of Tridharma activities in collaboration with partners from within and outside the country, centers on three main things.

First, to improve the quality of lecturers through tridharma collaboration with students, partner universities, and professional practitioners from the business world. Second, to improve the quality of lecturers through certification programs, PDS (Penerjunan Dosen ke Sekolah) activities, and internships for educational consultants and practitioners. In this short note, I’d like to reminisce about the good old days being in the class with three wonderful PBI legends whose life lessons have remained with me for the rest of my life. Kong Hendro, Pak Purba, and Bu Indri were my favorite lecturers and there was so much joy and happiness being in their classes. Read along and you’ll see why.

When I met Kong Hendro in 1993, he was in his 70s, with a strong build, professional demeanor, and a thundering voice. He taught Reading and part of the syllabus was telling stories about his adventures and his family. The atmosphere of the class was a blend between sitting on top of a bomb-rigged chair and watching a Stand-Up Comedy show. It was such a thrilling roller-coaster ride. He required that girls wear lipstick and skirt, while boys dress up neatly. He said: “In front please, darliiiing,” so female students would sit in the front rows. Whenever he saw students wearing sandal jepit (flip-flops) and T-shirts, he would run after them and step on their feet. When the sandal jepit offenders ran swiftly up the stairs, he would throw his fist in the air, mumbling something we could not comprehend.

His former students will never forget his famous phrases. He said: “Golekana dewe, Ndrooo” (Figure it out yourself, Ndro) when students submitted assignments without writing their names; or “Tidak ada barang baru” (There’s nothing new) to say that nothing could surprise him anymore as he had traveled the world. The most favorite words he said were: “Kowe seka ngendi, le? Kaliangkrik?” (Where are you from, son? Kaliangkrik?). He would read a text in the British accent and asked us to repeat correctly. When we failed to pronounce a word, we were asked to watch how he moved his lips to produce such sounds. We had to clench our fist so hard to suppress a giggle.

Pak Purba’s class also offered another hilarious and tension-filled moment in life. The first impression when I first 18

sat in his class was apprehension. At any moment, he could ask us to read a certain word or sentence and we had to repeat it until we got it right. The class was so tense as if we were walking on a minefield. Everyone was on edge. He was very meticulous about small details and it was hard to please him. Missing just one dot at the end of the sentence might cause an endless suffering of rereading and revising. When someone responded too slowly, he would say: “Too long! Minus one!” He often used a funny way of demonstrating how to produce a plosive sound. He put a piece of Rp100,000 rupiah note in front of his lips and blew it hard to pronounce words like “Paper”, “Peter”, “Plosive,” etc.

Even before Google Translate, he was the master of translating words literally to produce a comic relief in the highly tense class. He would say, with his poker face, words like “excuse me, my baby!” to mean “amit-amit jabang bayi,” “Your grandmother!” and “Your smell!” to crack some jokes in a deadpan tone. We doubled over with laughter but he maintained his straight face. Then, he would turn around and laugh in his sleeve. Joking aside, he was very strict during tests. He would pass the papers to the student sitting in the front row and say: “Take one and give the others to the back. Still face down!”

No one dared to even fidget, much less cheat.

The last unsung hero I’d like to cherish is Bu Indriani, my Pronunciation lecturer. Her pleasant voice spoke with an impressive British accent.

Learning and practicing pronunciation was never boring with Bu Indri because she cracked jokes almost all the time. She gave us mnemonics for how NOT to produce the wrong sounds. When my friend pronounced the words: “It could change” “pretty”, and “technique” incorrectly, she would say comically: “What? Kucing?

Kampret? Tehnik apa kopinik” and we all burst out laughing.

When we missed the hissing sound “s” she would fan herself “sumuk..sumuk” (It’s hot!). When we wrongly added “s” after a word, she would shiver “silir..silir..” or “it’s so windy.” She said them in such a funny way that it was very entertaining. Every error could be a teaching moment and a reason to laugh. These scenes remain as memorable, happy, and exciting moments in my college years.

There are lessons I learned from these three legends. First, be communicative by using the language correctly. Say what you mean and mean what you say. Second, small things matter. A period, comma, the sound ‘s’, the different sounds of vowels, word stress, and intonation are small things that really matter. Pay attention. Third, keep learning and improving every day to be competent in what we do. Fourth, be creative and unique. Fifth, dream big. When we are competent in English, we can spread our wings and fly away to become global citizens. English is the passport to the world. Lastly, have fun. I’m telling you. I did have fun with these three amazing lecturers. God bless their souls.

his month, on October the 5th 2021, we are celebrating The International Teacher’s Day. Therefore, we are highlighting three determined lecturers from ELESP Sanata Dharma. They are The Resourceful Miss Rina, The Kind-hearted and Loveable Miss Ika, and The Innovative Mr. Dwi. With them, learning English is more fun than a barrel of monkeys!

The Resourceful Rina Astuti Purnamaningwulan, also usually called as Miss Rina, is one of the lecturers in ELESP Sanata Dharma who is expeditious when it comes to online learning. She uses many ways to make online learning fun and meaningful. Her favorite media for teaching online is workshops, such as peer assessments. It is an insightful exercise for students because they can learn from each other.

Other than that, once she asked her students to make Quizizz for their friends.

That way, students could feel that they were stepping into their lecturers’ shoes.

Teaching in ELESP Sanata Dharma is fun for her. In precise, it’s a valuable experience for her as she said “The students are cooperative and excited about learning, they are shaped to be students who live their lives based on the Sanata Dharma’s 4C principles (Competence, Conscience, Compassion, and Commitment).” She also pointed out “It’s not whether the lecturers enjoy the online learning or not, it’s about how the students enjoy and can take the benefits from the online learning that are delivered by the lecturers.” Hence, two things that make online learning successful are communication and positive thoughts about others. Undoubtedly, we couldn’t agree more about that.

The Kind-hearted and Lovable She is Maria Vincentia Eka Mulatsih or well known as Miss Ika. She always greets her students with her heartwarming tone which makes her one of the most lovable lecturers in ELESP Sanata Dharma. She always responds to her students’ messages with excitement and she loves to have fruitful discussions with her students through Whatsapp Group and Zoom meetings. Her classes are full of joy because she uses various types of teaching methods and media like Wordwall and Quizizz. Aside from fighting boredom, the use of various media creates different experiences too according to her.

Teaching in ELESP Sanata Dharma enriches Miss Ika as she stated, To me, teaching in ELESP USD is like reading books. Classes or students are the books which are so unique and different from others. Since they cannot be the same, I have an opportunity to learn and relearn. The reading process is like a journey where I can meet many different students, listen to my students’ points of view or opinions, and work to achieve our goals together. I am so

The Innovative Benedictus Bherman Dwijatmoko, who is well-known as Mr. BB Dwi or Mr.Dwi is the developer of English learning applications called Prontice (Pronunciation Practice) and Pronex (Pronunciation Exercise). In this online learning, the development of learning methods is surely needed. Those apps help the students a lot in practicing their pronunciation. Although the apps still need some fixing in the voice recognition, we couldn’t resist that those apps are marvellous ideas.

Mr. Dwi’s subjects are mostly challenging. It allows both his students and him to learn together. Some of his subjects demand some programming, such as English Education Technology and Mobile Application for Language Learning. Certainly, online learning is just a piece of cake for him. This is his opinion about online teaching and learning,“With online teaching, the real challenge is how to help the students learn the material and make them sure that they have learned something through the process.”

An opportunity to develop your acting skills Play Performance, one of the English Education Study Program courses at Sanata Dharma University, offers students in semester 5 or 6 a oncein-a-lifetime chance to perform on

Play Performance is a place to build and develop students’ skills, be it theatrical skills or soft skills in working together, being responsible, disciplined, openminded, and dynamic in groups. SPD before S.Pd! What is it? SPD is one of the compulsory subjects in the seventh and eighth semesters for ELESP USD students. It requires the students to come at 06:00 am every Monday. SPD lectures are always held at the Central Building of the Sanata Dharma University by wearing a dress code of high heels, blazers and skirts for women, and suits and ties for men.

Amid the SPD course, students have to compete to “hunt” for clients who will be taught English afterward. Students work to become professionals who will be paid professionally by their clients.

It’s obvious that in ELESP Sanata Dharma, you’ll learn English to its origin. However, learning basic Asian languages such as Korean, Japanese, and Chinese are also accessible here.

French is within reach as well as a part of the elective course outside the study program. By learning different languages other than English, it can help our brain understand the nature and the logic of the languages. Our lecturers are highly competent and tech-friendly. In some cases, there will be native speakers to share their knowledge and cultural aspects of the languages. Even so, those courses are optional, not compulsory.

Culture is something attached to a certain group of people. This includes us as a part of a family, ethnic or racial group, and a nation. Culture embraces language, knowledge, habits, manners, religion, cuisine, dress, laws and norms, and many other aspects.

Overall, culture is us and the way of life. In ELESP Sanata Dharma, there is a course program called CrossCulturalUnderstanding that facilitates students' concern regarding Eastern and Western cultural similarities and differences. This will help students to understand, adapt, and behave wisely in a multicultural environment.

ELESP Sanata Dharma offers two options for their students in their final project required for graduation.

Before they get their Sarjana Pendidikan (S.Pd) degree, they must do academic writing. There are two types of academic writing; thesis and research papers. The thesis requires 30 pages in minimum, while the

research paper requires 15 pages. A research paper is a good alternative for those who struggle with various considerations in writing a thesis, right? However, both options should be consulted with the advisor.

Finally, the Upward Mobility seminar/webinar has arrived during this pandemic to help PBI students to simultaneously visualize the experience of pursuing higher dreams, being a successful person and getting well educated. That is to say, Upward Mobility offers various fascinating ideas about life after graduation.

Ms. Rina (Rina Astuti Purnamaningwulan, S.Pd., M.Hum.) shared the hope of the Upward Mobility program, especially because university time is well-suited to preparing for potential dreams or careers. That is why Upward Mobility invites PBI alumni who deliver ideas about the professional world.

In 2020, in the Upward Mobility webinar, Ms. Veni (Yohana Veniranda, M.Hum., Ph.D.) described the Upward Mobility history. She said that the Upward Mobility program has been active since 2003. Upward Mobility was first initiated by Dr. J. Bismoko. For 18 years, Upward Mobility has existed in PBI. Along the professional world journey, all graduates had memorable experiences to share. In Upward Mobility, they

brought up reflective impressions about their contributions and how a better future path was started by studying in PBI. Ms. Anya (Agnes Anya), one of the PBI graduates who now works in the world of journalism, learned insightful ideas and writing habits in PBI. In PBI, it was SPD (Service Program Design) where I had a life-changing event. “No one fails you but yourself,” Miss Lanny remarked, inspiring me to attempt something completely new. It was like a high point of an already completed journey. Then I learnt a lot about hardship at SPD. I’m happy that I didn’t squander my opportunity to visit Germany before the pandemic. Despite the fact that it was only partially funded, I was able to attend for free and without difficulty. However, nothing comes for free. There is a cost, whether it be in terms of energy, sentiments, or anything else. So, for those who are struggling, here’s some advice. Believe me when I say that your future will be brighter. I am grateful for Miss Lanny’s encouragement and the tough PBI lecturers who have enabled me to improve. I can start a business, and my own business, which has grown from $0 to tens of millions of rupiahs in revenue.

All thanks to me I did my best, my very best. Nothing but my very very very very best.

Studying in PBI is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is distinguished by two features: First, I found that the lecturers and all education personnel in PBI are special because they pay attention, are enthusiastic, and apply personalism to their pupils’ characteristics. Lecturers do not only carry out their instructional responsibilities and then leave, but they also provide exceptional help to students through DPA and supervise students through the lecture process until it is completed through varied formats.

The second one is creative learning. I definitely have a different learning pattern from what I had with my previous studies. There are several creative motoric methods that allow students to experience a variety of situations. Let’s say I previously experienced conventional lectures as I just passively listened throughout the lesson.

When I entered Sanata Dharma, I experienced a completely new atmosphere. As prospective teachers, students have a variety of creative projects to prepare . Another consideration is kinship. All university members are family: everyone is unified and has a commitment to improve their cherished study program and personal abilities in their own way.

During my two semesters in PBI, I learned a variety of skills, ranging from developing a willingness in studying English to honing grammatical accuracy. We are also taught to be humanists, “homo homini socius.”, which means to humanize one another. In addition, I feel that both the lecturers and friends in PBI have a high level of concern for others.

I was a student who enrolled in PBI entirely online: Online registration, Insadha and EWD. The worst part was that I had to meet friends while also following the online teaching and learning process. It prevented me from getting to know friends and understanding the courses thoroughly. This all-online activity, however, was not a hindrance for me because I am batch 20. I adapted quickly, therefore I believe that everything online is enjoyable, even though it would be more enjoyable if we could meet in person. The lecturers have been very helpful in helping me grasp the learning materials, from providing additional learning resources to discussing the topic in detail using zoom. Studying online may appear tough at first, but after I got used to it, things that were difficult feltl simpler.

efore the semester started, I was so stoked to join Gender Studies class, and guess what? It became one of the most memorable experiences in my uni’s life. The songs, bursts of laughter, insights, and blessings I received from the new path approached me like gifted fates. The more thankfulness I received, the more fascinating experiences I enjoyed in this class.

As a Gen Z generation, I noticed that people nowadays raise the problem about how gender is just a social construction in society. Not only that, many people also hold protests about gender inequality, so I wondered why and what the impacts are. That’s why I wanted to increase my knowledge on those issues by taking a Gender Studies course in Catholic Soegijapranata University.

During the class, I never felt left out because my lecturer always involved me and other new friends in the virtual discussion. Even on the first day of the class, they were so welcoming. My friends in Gender Studies class made the discussion full of joy with laughter and interest. In addition, we communicated as close friends and sometimes switched from English to our mother tongue, Bahasa Indonesia, in order to make the topic understandable. Therefore, the teaching method that my lecturer used in class was quite fun and interesting.

The class atmosphere was so exciting from the beginning until the end of the semester. In the class, the lecturer used many different learning media, such as jam board, forum discussion, PowerPoint presentation, online meeting, YouTube, and many more. The variation of learning media really helped the lecturer to build excitement in learning activities. Apart from the learning media, the people who were in the same class with me were also friendly. They did not discriminate against me and others who were from different universities.

In the beginning, we learnt the differences between gender and sex before moving to the more complex materials. I learned a lot of information that I had never known before.

Though the adjustment with new material was challenging, I adapted to a different vibe well and enjoyed the learning atmosphere.

I didn’t expect that I would learn about gender violence through songs and commercial advertisements. It was awesome and exciting at the same time! My lecturer gave us several songs to analyse which were not familiar to me.

One of my favorite songs was entitled Two Beds and A Coffee Machine by Savage Garden. In addition, I came to understand that gender stereotypes were shown in many things like in shampoo and bleach advertisements.
