Various regions around the world are known for certain celebrations that attract crowds from near and far. New Orleans’ French Quarter lights up in honor of Mardi Gras; the Carnival of Venice is an historic festival full of masked balls that takes place around this Italian city of canals; people dodge bulls in the streets of Pamplona, Spain, during San Fermín; and for those who live for beer and dancing, there’s no better place to be than Munich for Oktoberfest.
Oktoberfest is an annual festival held over a two-week period. Despite what its name implies, the festival doesn’t take place primarily in the month of October. Rather, Oktoberfest ends on the first Sunday in October. Oktoberfest commemorates the celebration of the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria to Princess Therese von SachsenHildburghausen.
While the largest Oktoberfest festival occurs in Germany, a number of communities across the globe with large German populations hold their own Oktoberfests modeled on the original. And anyone can host their own Bavarian bash at home with some planning and key items.
· Beer: Beer is the glue that holds the celebration together. Only beer from six main breweries in Munich are allowed to be served during the traditional Oktoberfest. Each brewery produces a special festbier exclusively for the celebration. For an authentic experience, serve beer from one of these breweries, which include Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner, and Spaten.
· German food: German sausages and traditional German pretzels should be on the menu for Oktoberfest parties. Find out if you can order sausages from a German meat
market in your area. Additional foods to offer include potato pancakes and cheese boards. Don’t forget the apple strudel for dessert.
· Red, black and yellow, or blue and white: Decorate the space in red, black and yellow, which are the colors of the German flag. You also can go with blue and white, which are the colors inspired by the Bavarian flag.
· Traditional attire: For gents, traditional lederhosen, which are leather short or knee-length breeches, can be worn for the celebration. Women will want to don a real dirndl dress that features a blouse under a cinched bodice and an A-line aproned skirt.
· Long tables: Don’t overlook the communal spirit of the celebration, which means people sitting at long, large tables. Rent or invest in wooden tables that can seat the crowds.
· Tents: Set up tents to replicate the Oktoberfest beer tents in Munich. Add subtle streamers and flags as well as some string lights or lanterns for when the party continues into the evening.
· Festive music: Select a mix of oom-pah-pah, polka and classic military marches. Or choose from German pop hits, if desired. Of course, the party is yours, and as long as the music is upbeat, guests are sure to have a good time.
· Designated drivers: Since Oktoberfest is such a beerheavy celebration, designated drivers and ride-share services should be set up in advance to ensure all participants can arrive home safely after tapping their steins and yelling “Prost!”

The key to a great wine cocktail is finding the right balance between bitter and sweet. Too many sweet ingredients can ruin a cocktail by making it sour or overly acidic. Too much wine and you lose the flavor of the fruity ingredients.

Ingredients and culinary skills are not the only components that can bring out the flavor in a delicious meal. Wine can serve as the perfect complement to a meal, particularly when individuals identify which varieties go well with certain foods.
Wine lists can sometimes be intimidating when dining at establishments known for their extensive offerings. In such instances, diners can ask servers for recommendations, as many restaurants teach staff about which wines go well with the various dishes on their menus. But diners also can learn which wines pair best with certain types of food, a process that can be both enjoyable and illuminating. The following are four popular wine styles, their flavor profiles and foods that go well with them.
1. Pinot Noir
Pinot Noir is a popular style of wine that can be found on the red wine list at many establishments. Wine Folly notes that Pinot Noir is a dry, light-bodied red that has a very fruity, floral taste. Wine Folly notes that a Pinot Noir typically pairs well with chicken, pork, veal, duck, or cured meat.
2. Cabernet Sauvignon
Wine.com reports that Cabernet Sauvignon is the most planted and popular red wine grape in the world. A Cabernet Sauvignon is full-bodied and tends to be higher in alcohol by volume (ABV) than other styles, which is something diners should keep in mind. Wine Folly indicates lamb, beef and smoked meats pair well with Cabernet Sauvignon.
3. Chardonnay
Chardonnay is widely considered the most popular white wine in the world. In fact, WineInsiders.com reports that almost every wine region around the world grows the variety of grapes necessary to make Chardonnay. Wine Folly indicates Chardonnay boasts a yellow citrus fruit taste that can be akin to banana or pineapple and often features a touch of butterscotch, vanilla or toasted caramel. Chardonnay pairs well with seafood such as lobster, crab and shrimp, but also goes well with chicken and pork.
4. Sauvignon Blanc
Sauvignon Blanc is another white wine that boasts a fruity
flavor profile. The profile of Sauvignon Blanc calls to mind exotic fruits like honeydew melon and kiwi. Sauvignon Blanc is considered a light- to medium-bodied white wine, and Wine Folly reports that it goes well with fish, chicken, pork, and veal. In addition, Sauvignon Blanc pairs well with various ethnic cuisines, including Mexican, Vietnamese and French dishes.
When paired with the right dish, wine can make a night out at a favorite restaurant that much more memorable.
A high-quality wine rack is a must-have, especially as you collect more bottles over the years. If you’re looking to expand your storage into a wine cellar or storage area, multiple wine racks may be in your future.
Choosing the right wine racks for your space can be a challenge. That’s because without physically having the rack in your home prior to purchase, it’s difficult to envision how it will fit and function. This leads us to our first step in selecting a great wine rack.
Finding the Space
If space is an issue in your home, finding a functional wine rack may take some creativity. Measure the area where you plan to place it, including the depth from which the bottles will stick out once placed on the rack.
Bring your measuring tape to your wine accessory store to make sure you’re leaving with a rack that will fit in your desired location.
If your wine rack will be in a room-temperature location in the home, it’s important to know which wines will retain their flavor and quality in this setting.
Experts recommend that wine stored outside of a cooler be consumed within a couple of months. The humidity level and overall temperature can impact the wine’s integrity, so keep
this in mind when choosing both your wine rack and your wine.
Certain types of wine bottles, such as magnum sizes, will not fit in the standard openings of many wine racks. Most champagne bottles also require larger slots. Consider this when purchasing your wine rack.
If you tend to collect a range of bottle sizes, a rack with both standard and large openings may be right for you.
Every wine drinker would cringe at the sight of a collection of wine bottles hitting the floor due to shoddy wine rack craftsmanship. Make sure this doesn’t happen to you by choosing a rack made of high-quality materials.
Traditional racks were made of wood, but metal racks seem to be rising in popularity. The stability of heavy duty metal wire gives wine drinkers confidence that their prized possessions can rest in safety.
Summer entertaining season provides ample opportunities to soak up some sun and have some fun with family and friends. Backyard barbecues and other get-togethers at home are even more fun when hosts ensure they have certain must-have items for summer soirees.
· Fire features: The days when summer hosts only needed a few extra lawn chairs and some burgers and hot dogs on the grill for a backyard barbecue are long gone. Though those items still have a place at backyard barbecues, summer parties have taken a step up. Fire features, whether it’s a standalone fire pit, one built into a patio or a gas-powered fire table, are now wildly popular. Fire features provide a welcome place to relax and converse with guests after the sun goes down. And much to kids’ delight, a fire feature also paves the way for some post-meal s’mores.
· Insulated wine cooler: Coolers are great places to store water, soda, beer, seltzers, and other popular beverages. But what about wine? An insulated wine cooler ensures wine stays properly cooled but doesn’t get too cold, which
can happen when wine is stored in a more traditional cooler filled with ice. Bottles are simply placed in the insulated cooler (much like canned beverages slide easily into can koozies), and the bottle can be kept on the table much like you would for formal dinners indoors. Hosts can go the extra mile by pairing insulated wine tumblers with their wine cooler.
· Outdoor storage cabinet: Hosts can save themselves the stress and effort of walking in and out for dinnerware and other table accessories by investing in a sturdy outdoor storage cabinet. As meal time draws near, hosts will appreciate that all the plates, napkins, utensils, and placemats are already outside. The top of the storage cabinet can double as a small but convenient buffet station for sides that aren’t being cooked over an open flame.
These are just a handful of items that can up the ante on traditional backyard barbecues. Homeowners should know that there’s no limit to the number of items that can make summer entertaining season more special.
It wasn’t too long ago that it seemed a new craft brewery opened just about every month. Even though the industry is past its peak in terms of new breweries, the demand for locally produced craft beers remains high. There were 9,500 breweries in the United States in 2021, and openings outpaced closings, according to the Brewers Association.
With so much interest in locally produced beers, a local brewery tour can be the perfect way for people to enjoy an afternoon or evening. Here’s how to make a brewery tour fun and safe.
Choosing breweries
If you live in a walking town or one with ample public transportation, you may be able to visit two or three different breweries easily. This enables you to enjoy tastings and compare the various local offerings. However, if there are not many breweries nearby, touring a single brewery may be your best bet.
Small breweries may not have food service along with their beer. Do your research in advance to see what is available. Some breweries partner with food trucks or local dining or take-out establishments. Rather than drink on an empty stomach and run the risk of becoming intoxicated, it’s always best to arrange for snacks or a meal.
Try a flight
A flight is a sampling of the different beers a brewery
produces. A flight, sometimes referred to as a beer board, includes three- to five-ounce servings of different types of beers. Rather than playing it safe and only ordering your favorite type of beer, a flight can help you step out of your comfort zone.
Pace yourself
If you will be visiting a few different breweries, leave ample time between each visit to mingle, ask questions and tour the facilities if the owners allow visitors to view the equipment. This also helps reduce the risk of getting intoxicated.
Some brewery tours are self-arranged and self-guided. Others may be organized by a tour group service. For example, Brews Cruise Inc., offers beer-sampling adventures in 13 locations. Whenever drinking is involved, it’s best to let a sober party do the driving. Consider taking a ride share or hiring a party van to take you to the locations so that there is no risk of driving under the influence.
Speak with the brewer to find out which beers they recommend and what makes the brewery unique. It can be interesting to get the back story of the brewery.
Craft brewing is very popular, and touring local breweries can make for a fun night out.
