From The Publisher... by Barry Plaxen Erratum: In our July issue, a painting exhibited at Desmond Campus was incorrectly attributed to Ann Marie Nitti. The lovely Peonies in Bloom is the work of Ann Marie Silvani. See page 27. Synchronicity of the month: A mother-daughter art exhibit in Warwick and a mother-daughter (and son-in-law) art exhibit in Newburgh. Vocabulary Lesson: Con sordino: with the use of a mute.

To The Editor... Fifteen years? It can’t be! But I’m deliriously happy that it is. CANVAS is my “go-to” for every art genre that exists: music, theatre, visual art, spoken word, literature, dance and so much more. I eagerly devour each and every issue. And as an arts creator and publicist, you have been so good to me and the various companies I work for. I am extremely grateful. Thank you, CANVAS, thank you Barry Plaxen, Sophia Krcic and Marc Gerson for all you do for the arts in our community. And happy anniversary! - Carol Montana Artistic Director - Big Sky Productions Publicist - Shandelee Music Festival Shame on me! I did not know this was such a momentous issue, being a Banner 15 Years! So, firstly - congratulations! Look at all those cool, cool covers! As the old saying goes: you’ve come a long way, baby! It is truly great how you memorialize, archive, celebrate, integrate, educate and herald all the arts up here. In applying for the grant I received from Arts Mid-Hudson, I noted that the ONE institution I would want to advertise in and promote my show was

CANVAS! And having so said, I must tell you how pleased I am with the ad in this issue! It is wonderfully set and looks great, Sophia. Thank you so much for all of your help. My performers were just tickled to see themselves in print, both in the ad and the pursuant article. With much appreciation and shared joy for your achievements, - Karen E. Gersch, Montgomery I have been remiss in saying just how much CANVAS and you (and Sophia too!) mean to the “arting” community! When I picked up my last CANVAS and went, “Whaaaaat! 15years!!” I couldn’t believe it. You have been an advocate, and may I say a friend for so long but who’s counting... hoping for many, many more! - Kate Hyden, Livingston Manor Fifteen years ago, when you told Sheila and me that you were starting a paper, we both had visions of a dozen mimeographed sheets stapled together. We subscribed

anyway and got this thick, lavishly illustrated, professional-looking newspaper. We were stunned. I still am. CANVAS looks great and is fascinating to read. You don’t just advertise concerts, you offer little essays about the composers and their music. I particularly enjoy Philip Ehrensaft’s pieces. You don’t just advertise art shows, you give little bios of the artists. CANVAS is Time Out New York raised to a whole different level. You care about culture, and that shows on every page. You said in this last issue that you’re lucky. So are your readers. Keep it up! - Judith Wink, New York City
