Thanks to CANVAS, I was able to see Prudence Wright Holmes’ powerful one-person show about Miep Gies, who brought food and news to Anne Frank and her family when they were in hiding.

CANVAS is a priceless resource, and a reminder to us Manhattanites that culture doesn’t just thrive here.

Spirit of Christmas at the Paramount

Following his November concert in Sugar Loaf, and just prior to bringing his The Spirit of Christmas to Southington, CT (Dec. 4) and Holyoke, MA (Dec. 6), world renown 18-time Grammy winning artist Jimmy Sturr will bring his Holiday Show to Middletown.

This great holiday presentation stars Jimmy Sturr and his Orchestra, with special guests, The Coasters singing their many hits, The Jimmy Sturr Singers, Matt & Elaine and more.

The Coasters are an American rhythm & blues/rock & roll vocal group who had a string of hits in the late 1950s. Beginning with Searchin’ and Young Blood in 1957, their most memorable songs were written by the songwriting and producing team of Leiber and Stoller. Although the Coasters originated outside of mainstream doo-wop, their records were so frequently imitated that they became an important part of the doo-wop legacy

through the 1960s. In 1987, they were the first group inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Polka Today! originators Matt & Elaine Bonowitz appeared on America’s Got Talent in June, 2022. They beat out over 25,000 contestants to take their high-energy polka style of dance to new levels by blending country, swing, and ballroom dancing with the polka, and adding flashy and appealing costuming and choreography.

Seeing is believing. When you see Jimmy Sturr and his Orchestra in person, you know why they draw the huge crowds, have been voted #1 in the country, and are considered the very best in Polka music.

The Holiday Show is on December 3 at 3:00pm at the Paramount Theatre, 17 South Street, Middletown.

Paintings in Liberty thru

Hurry! The solo exhibition of paintings that portray views of NYC neighborhoods, Sullivan County, and rural Brazil, where artist Edward Ziff (who has led quite the career - continue reading!) has been a frequent visitor, are only on view until December 3 at the Liberty Museum & Arts Center

Take a friend and enjoy viewing Mr. Ziff’s artworks while supporting our local art scene!

Mr. Ziff’s work has been influenced by the belief that the world that we experience is more than what we simply see and hear. It incorporates emotions, understandings, memories, reflections, compassion, etc., added by the brain, giving his work an altered, sometimes paradoxical perspective. “Through the medium of art, we can share with others these creations of our minds,” he says.

In his professional life, Mr. Ziff is a neurobiologist. Born in New York City and educated in the NYC public schools, he earned a Bachelor’s degree at Columbia, a PhD at Princeton and completed his post doctoral studies

in Cambridge, UK. He has conducted neurobiology and cancer-related research in London and at Rockefeller University and most recently at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, where he is now Professor Emeritus.

Ziff has co-authored books on DNA and autism for the non-specialist, as well as articles in the New York Review of Books on evolution and brain function. He first came to the Catskills more than 30 years ago and divides his time between a home in Swan Lake and NYC.

LMAC, at 46 South Main Street, Liberty, is open Saturdays from noon4:00pm. For info, call: 845-292-2394.

Dudzick’s

Playwright Tom Dudzick was born and raised in Buffalo - in an apartment above his father’s tavern, only steps away from the Our Lady of Seneca Street shrine, upon which his play Miracle on South Division Street is based.

“My childhood was great, and it had a great effect on me - I guess everyone’s childhood does, but mine happened to be pretty funny - growing up over a tavern, the run-ins with the nuns, and the statue, which is on the same street I grew up on, about a block and a half from where the tavern was.

“It was built right around when I was born. We were always aware of it. We had our hair cut by Mr. Battaglia, the man who built it. And we would go look at it and wonder about it. It was a source of mystery. We would kneel in front of it, say a prayer. And then the nuns gave us the real lowdown, they said, “Do not pray in front of that statue. He’s a nice man, that barber, but he didn’t have a vision.” We weren’t bold enough to ask Mr. Battaglia about

on South Division Street” Closes Shadowland’s Season

it. We just got our hair cut and kept our mouth shut.

“I was standing across the street from it, just looking at it and, I think, that’s dramatic enough all by itself. It’s lifesized, and it’s in a 20-foot shrine, made of brick and glass. So I interviewed the caretaker, who lived across the street from it. She showed me some papers; some actual history of the statue. And honestly, it was not that interesting of a story. It was very dry: The barber had a vision and he built the statue of the lady who appeared to him. And that was it. There may have been some family drama going on, but I wasn’t privy to it.

“So I decided to totally make up a story. And that’s why I decided to change the street. The story is fictional. So, I felt a little better moving the statue over a couple blocks. The statue does not sit on South Division Street in real life; it sits on Seneca Street.”

Dudzick’s fictional play is the story of the Nowak family, living amidst

the urban rubble of Buffalo’s East Side. The neighborhood is depressed, but Clara, the family matriarch, happily runs her soup kitchen and tends to the family heirloom - a shrine to the Blessed Mother, which adjoins the house. This neighborhood beacon of faith commemorates the day when the Blessed Virgin Mary materialized in Clara’s father’s barber-shop.

As the “comedic” play opens, a family meeting - run by daughter Ruth - has been called to divulge her plans to go public with the family miracle by creating a onewoman play about the sacred event.

As the play begins to close, you watch Clara unknowingly go through a true catharsis regarding her unhappy relationship with her own mother, and you come away knowing you’ve witnessed a serious “drama” with an inspiring message for people of all (and no) faiths.

Jodie Lynne McClintock has appeared in film and television as well as on Broadway and Off, in London’s West End, at Israel’s

National Theatre - the Habimah, and at major regional theatres across the country.

Regional theatre and TV actor (and commercials) Laura Chaneski, is thrilled to make her Shadowland Stages debut!

Melody Ladd will also make her Shadowland Stages debut. Past credits include many NYC shows as well as regional.

Sean Walsh attends SUNY New Paltz where he is studying theater and performance. He is so happy and grateful to be returning once again to Shadowland to close out a great year for live theater.

Miracle on South Division Street, directed by Artistic Director Brendan Burke, will be performed December 2-18 at the MainStage at Shadowland Stages, 157 Canal Street, Ellenville. The December 3 matinee will be the “vaxxed and masked” performance. December 2 & 3 matinees offer “pay what you can” tickets. Box Office: 845-647-5511. www.shadowlandstages.org

“Transition” in Youngsville

Jeffersonville artists Kevin Gref and Lucy Sardonia invite you to the opening reception of their exhibition, Transition: Exploring Meaning & Change through Art, on November 26 at 3:00pm

Kevin’s work in painted wood and mixed media is a complex adventure in shape and color which visually interprets words and their meaning. Lucy works with a variety of materials as she explores and reimagines everyday scenes from her childhood in the Caribbean and our local landscapes.

The subtlety of color in Kevin’s work is complemented by the colorful portrayals of strength in nature and humans that Lucy has created.

Born in the Dominican Republic, Lucy immigrated to the U.S. with her family at a young age. While in high school, her talent was recognized

by her art instructor who encouraged her. Although she took incidental courses in art and fashion at Syracuse University, she is primarily self-taught.

Kevin received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Buffalo, specializing in sculpting. After retiring from a career as a carpenter, he returned to his art in 2013 with the opening of his studio Jeffersonville Steamworks where he began to experiment with steambent white oak, cherry, and other hardwoods.

Kevin’s work has appeared in group shows at the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance, Catskill Art Space, as well as the Broadway production of Harold and Maude.

Transition is on view through December 30 at Domesticities & The Cutting Garden, 4055 Route 52, Youngsville.

Philippe Safire uses pixel patterns as a visual metaphor to depict the pervasive influence of digital technologies in our everyday lives. He seeks to translate our fascination for the digital and its power to disrupt society.

The artist often appropriates familiar symbols and pop culture iconography. In this current work, the artist carved replicas of the world atlas, the American flag, human silhouettes, and the “like” icon from social media apps.

For Transition, Safire has created a set of new pieces made with color pencils and black paper cut-outs. The show also features an installation consisting of animation and video projection.

A French-Armenian artist living and working in the Hudson Valley, Safire’s recent projects include Spell, an award-winning short film that received international recognition, Create, a participatory exhibition, and

Nightcolors, a public art installation in Beacon. His art has been exhibited at Lacda, ArtsWestchester Gallery, Reverse Gallery, BeaconArts, Garrison Art Center, NYU, and the Center for the Digital Arts, among others.

Mount Saint Mary College’s CMA Gallery is located on the 1st floor of Aquinas Hall, 330 Powell Avenue, Newburgh.

The CMA gallery was created in 2019 as a professional artist space to exhibit media picked by Mount faculty from among the rising population of artists who live and work in Newburgh, Beacon, and throughout the Hudson Valley.

The show is on view Monday to Friday during normal business hours, or by appointment through January 30, 2023. Email cma-gallery@msmc.edu for more information.

Chutzpah Collaboration in Callicoon

Chutzpah (a.k.a. Hutzpah) is a Yiddish word meaning “impudence or gall.” Bravery that borders on rudeness is chutzpah, which rhymes with “foot spa.” If you have chutzpah, you say what you think without worrying about hurting someone’s feelings, looking silly, or getting in trouble.

Chutzpah is the quality of audacity, for good or for bad. It derives from the Hebrew word ḥuṣpāh (חֻצְפָּה), meaning “insolence”, “cheek” or “audacity”. Thus the original Yiddish word has a strongly negative connotation but the form which entered English as a Yiddishism in American English has taken on a broader meaning, having been popularized through vernacular use in film, literature, and television.

SongClub is a drop-in singing experience aimed at bringing communities together through singing original arrangements of familiar songs in a safe and welcoming environment.

Debbie Lan (pictured) is a musician, singer, choral director, songwriter and teaching artist. With a passion for singing and helping others find their own voices, arranging songs, teaching group harmonies and community building, Debbie enjoys directing SongClub and her four performing adult community Voice Ensembles: Bloom (52 voices), The B2’s (9 voices), Perennial (9 voices) and the Resisterhood Community Choir (20 voices and counting).

A former teaching artist/musician at High Meadow School in Stone Ridge, Debbie is also a musician/singer/ songwriter for the band Grenadilla, with her Kwela flavored rhythms, upbeat melodies, layered voices, a touch of Cape Town jive and a hint of the blues.

“There aren’t enough communities making music together in the world today,” says Debbie. “Kids and adults spend so much time alone in their rooms, with their games, TV’s and computers. We want to encourage all people, not just ‘musicians’ to make music a part of their

daily lives, to pick up an instrument, open their voice and play and sing along, making music just for the fun of it.”

For the Music Institute of Sullivan & Ulster’s (MISU) next Coffee House Concert, Debbie will conduct YOU while YOU sing. “I hand out lyric sheets and teach harmonies to a familiar popular song. The song will not be Christmas or holiday based. There is no written sheet music,” Debbie explained.

This SongClub event will take place on December 3 at 7:30pm at 40 Market Street, “either in MISU or St. Joseph’s Church, dependant on numbers, so every one can feel comfortable and safe. Masking will be highly recommended as well as appropriate distance seating being provided for those requesting it,” said MISU Director Anastasia Solberg Tickets at the door. See ad page 9.

“Holiday Milonga” in Sugar Loaf

After discovering his passion for the art form in his early 20s, Tango expert Jon Tariq embarked on a journey as a professional in 2007 and his career has only gone on an upwards trajectory, working for some of the best studios in New York, Westchester and New Jersey. Plus, Tango allowed him to share his knowledge with Tango lovers in different parts of the world.

Part of Tariq’s success is due to the wide variety of knowledge that he possesses in the field of Tango. Not one to rest on his laurels, he has continuously searched for new paths to learn from and, nowadays, he has cemented himself as an expert in the field and its many different variables.

Another reason as to why Tariq is so highly regarded in the field of Argentine Tango is that he is one of the most progressive and more capable teachers in the market. Throughout the years, his work as an instructor, teacher and choreographer has received praise for prioritizing technique, execution

and fundamentals in a fun, engaging manner.

One of the biggest misconceptions about Argentine Tango is that you cannot learn it or dance it after a certain age. Tariq’s methods and teachings adapt to people of all ages, and he makes sure that everybody can enjoy learning, as his beliefs and passions for the art form is something that drives him forward, combined with a genuine desire to share his knowledge with more people.

Tariq will share his expertise and passion at his Holiday Milonga on December 17 with all levels of classes and practice starting at 6:30pm, followed by a Holiday Tango Evening from 8:00pm1:00am at the Seligmann Center, 25 White Oak Drive, Sugar Loaf.

For class/level and schedule info, email info@tangoschool.nyc or phone 917-825-0620.

The
Ellenville
Audience is the Choir in

Gould’s Poetry, Goshen & Montgomery

“Roberta Gould starts the reader off in the territory of the ordinary before turning a corner into realms of the strange and sublime. Holding forth in a voice marked by brevity and surety, she offers poems short on the page but long in perspective: lenses that reflect worlds we thought we knew.”

- Margot Farrington, American Book Review.

Embellishments are kept to a minimum in Gould’s poetry. “Stories do not need me,” she says in a recent interview, and depicts from many angles - personal and philosophical - with an aliveness and verve, expressed in quotidian language which is precise and musical. This gives her work the arresting archetypical power that has been noted. For many years she has also given us true political poetry that transcends time and the details of the day with great power. These poems have been recurrent since her first book, Dream Yourself Flying Gould taught Romance languages for twenty years at Brooklyn College and briefly at the University of California in Berkeley. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Poetry Now, Catholic

Worker, California Quarterly, Milkweed Chronicle, Mid American Review, Jewish Currents, Green Mountain Review, Confrontation, Helicon Nine, Naugatuck River Review, Socialism and Democracy, The Art and Craft of Poetry, in many other literary publications, and in anthologies including Mixed Voices, A Slant of Light, and Up the River.

Gould has exhibited her surreal photography in New York City, and has translated poetry by Sor Juana Inéz de la Cruz, Salvador Espriu, Pedro Garfias, Jorge Luis Borges and other Spanish language poets into English.

She will read from her new book, for the Poetry at the Church series, on December 19 at 7:00pm, at the Goshen Methodist Church, 115 Main Street.

Host: Ted Gill. Info: 845-294-5010. Donations welcomed.

Gould then overnights to nearby Montgomery where she is the featured poet at Java Blue Coffee & Market, 8 Union Street, on December 20 at 6:00pm

Host: Robert Milby. Info: 845-4574331. $2 donation.

May I Have A Word With You

Quips, Quotes & Quiddities

The Will British broadcaster, Gyles Brandreth, also a former member of Parliament, has a sharp eye and keen ear for words and mirth. In his sequel More Joy of Lex, Brandreth shares this cynical will written by Philadelphia industrialist, William Hickington who died in 1947.

“To my wife I leave her lover, and the knowledge that I wasn’t the fool she thought I was.

“To my son I leave the pleasure of earning a living. For 25 years he thought the pleasure was all mine. He was mistaken.

“To my daughter I leave $100,000. She will need it. The only piece of business her husband ever did was to marry her.

“To my valet I leave the clothes he has been stealing from me for ten years. Also the fur coat he wore last winter while I was in Palm Beach.

“To my partner, I leave the suggestion that he take some clever man in with him at once if he expects to do any business.

Forty Lashes with a Wet Noodle!

That’s a nonsense punishment probably stemming from early stand-up comedy.

But the number 40 has a singular history, some of it biblical.

It’s still debated but widely believed that Moses spent 40 days and 40 nights on each of his visits to Mount Sinai.

The Lenten period lasts 40 days.

The fictional Ali Baba had 40 thieves.

Quarantine comes from the Italian word meaning a period of forty days.

We may take comfort from the adage, “Life begins at 40” but, some online clown adds: “Life may begin at 40 but so do fallen arches, rheumatism, and the tendency to tell a story to the same person over and over again.”

This is a real Loo Loo!

You’ll be proud to learn that you can not only be a patriot but an environmental champion without ever leaving the bathroom.

Artist Pat MacDonald’s “Road Trip”

Pat MacDonald captures the subtle colors of the sky and the landscape with her combinations of oil, pastel and watercolors. “When I choose a landscape I am looking for peace and serenity, something that should be noted and felt, a connection,” she says. “All this beauty and power inspires me, then it can become the essence of a new story. The challenge of capturing a landscape in midflight during a moment that can only be found once is magical and an echo of reality.”

“Pat is a master of composition. She can take a very simple scene and highlight its beauty and drama with her choices of what to include or not,” said Wallkill River Center for the Arts Executive Director, Sarah Pierson

“As a pastel and oil painter I am looking to express the subtle colors in the landscape before they quietly and quickly change,” said Pat. “To capture the sky

or meadow before the air around them moves on and passes through. Showing all the details but softening the edges, blurring some of the static and defusing some of the noise. Noticing its beauty and bringing it to life. For the flowers are willing to show their beauty and the clouds are willing to show their power and that inspires me; then it can become the essence of a new story.”

An exhibition, titled Road Trip, encompasses a large body of Pat’s works. The pieces have a smooth and soft quality to them, like fond memories. The exhibit now adorns the walls of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 9 Vance Road, Rock Tavern, and will captivate all who come for an open house showing of her art on December 9 from 2:00pm-4:00pm Light refreshments will be available. For further information or to arrange a private showing, contact Michael Landrum at 845-851-6024.

“Godspell” Comes to Cornwall

Godspell first opened offBroadway in 1971, and on Broadway in 1976. It has since been produced by multiple touring companies and a Broadway revival ran from October 13, 2011 to June 24, 2012.

The musical is structured as a series of parables, primarily based on the Gospel of Matthew. The parables are interspersed with music set primarily to lyrics from traditional hymns, with the passion of Christ appearing briefly near the end of the show.

In this re-staging of the revival production of Godspell, a group of men and women come together in the early 1990’s in a Seattle bar at the forefront of the Grunge music scene. This group of people from disparate walks of life find themselves in the bar at a moment in time where society is in transitioning from the glittering and roaring 1980’s to the raw and real 1990’s.

At the precipice of the moment where technology and social media will change society irrevocably, it is here that they form a bond at the behest of a new messenger, and re-tell some of the most notable parables from the

Book of Matthew through comedy, song, and dance. Together they create a community to share and enjoy these new found values, as they journey toward the inevitable weaknesses of human nature, and suffer through the betrayal and destruction of the very messenger who brought them together.

Presented by Theatre on Main Street, Director Jessica Jaber said, “Celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the revival production with us! Our production features professional talent hailing from all areas of the country, as well as local talent discovered and developed from our surrounding neighborhoods!”

See Godspell at 45 Quaker Avenue, Suite 100, Cornwall, December 2-11 For info: 929-483-4776. See ad page 6.

A Virtual Visit with An Artist’s Studio

Jean-Marc Superville Sovak is a multidisciplinary artist and teaching professional whose work is deeply rooted in the community around him. His public works include organizing and officiating a Burial for White Supremacy (Unison Arts Center, New Paltz), retracing speculative steps on the Underground Railroad across historic sites in the Hudson Valley (Wilderstein Historic Site, Rhinebeck), designing memorials to Afro-Dutch pioneers in colonial New Netherlands (Rockland County’s Art in Public Places), and I Draw & You Talk, a storefront portraitdrawing studio doubling as an oral history project (Matteawan Gallery, Beacon). His current practice, a-Historical Landscapes, involves altering 19thcentury landscape engravings to include images borrowed from contemporaneous anti-slavery publications.

As visiting artist and lecturer, he has used his work as a platform to discuss topics such as The American Picturesque in the Age of Abolitionism at colleges, universities and cultural institutions. A graduate of Bard College’s M.F.A.

program in Film/Video, JeanMarc’s video work has been screened worldwide and is distributed by Videographe, Inc. A recipient of a NYFA Strategic Opportunity Stipend and the Alice and Horace Chandler Purchase Award, he serves on the board of Education and Outreach at the Samuel Dorsky Museum of Art, and on the board at Unison Arts Center in New Paltz. Jean-Marc works as Museum Educator at Dia:Beacon and is Studio Assistant to Marilyn Minter.

Orange County Arts Council presents a virtual Artist Studio Visit with Superville Sovac on December 15 at 5:00pm. Tickets are free for OCAC members; $10 suggested donation for non-members. Registration is mandatory to attend this virtual event. Visit www. ocartscouncil.org to register. An email with the event link and password to login will be forwarded to those who register.

This program is made possible in part through the support of New York State Council on the Arts, Orange County Government, Shapiro's Furniture, and donations from people like you. Please consider making a donation today at: www.ocartscouncil.org/support.

The Jazz Coalition: “Cinqué”

The Jazz Coalition was a vital artistic and financial support initiative for jazz musicians during the Covid-19 pandemic. The coalition was formed to manifest unity among the global jazz community at a time of mass unemployment, painful lost opportunities, and increased struggle in every area of life.

“The idea to create the Jazz Coalition series stems from the success we have had with the Sunday Night Jazz series I booked at The Falcon, which began in February and runs through next June 26,” said Danny Melnick

The Jazz Coalition launched its Commission Fund, awarding $1,000 grants to 104 musicians in support of new music to capture this moment and point a way toward transcendence. A new campaign funds the live concert performances and recordings of 15 previously commissioned artists and their ensembles at The Falcon.

The first of three December Jazz Coalition concerts is Elio Villafranca’s Cinqué, which showcases the cultural diversity of the Caribbean, while simultaneously highlighting the African traditions woven into the fabric of each of these nations.

Cinque is a 5-movement suite

inspired by the story of Joseph Cinque, who in 1839 led a successful revolt aboard the slave ship La Amistad, days after being sold and transported to a sugar plantation in Cuba. Elio’s most ambitious project today, it showcases the cultural diversity of the five Caribbean nations of Cuba, Puerto Rico, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica; while simultaneously highlighting the Congolese musical heritage woven into the fabric of each of these diverse nations, and yet unified via the forced migration of Africans to the Americas.

Cinqué was nominated for a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album. It will be performed at The Falcon, 1348 Route 9W, Marlboro, December 4 at 7:00pm. Visit www.thefalcon.com

The NUTCRACKER - In Music & Dance

The first nutcrackers were made as replicas of soldiers and other figures of authority. The common folk took great enjoyment in having the ruling people working for them, cracking their “hard nuts of life”. We call it a nutcracker if it has a handle in the back that opens the mouth, even if it is too small to actually crack a nut. Many authorities believe

they first appeared in Sonnenberg in the Thuringia region of Germany.

In 1872, Wilhelm Fuchtner of Seiffen, known as “the father of the nutcrackers”, began the first commercial production of nutcrackers making multiple figures from the same basic design.

Then in 1892, Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet, The Nutcracker, debuted. It

is based on E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 fairytale Nussknacker und Mausekönig (Nutcracker and Mouse King) via a French retelling by Alexandre Dumas.

Originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (Op. 71), the original production was not a success.

The 20-minute suite that Tchaikovsky

extracted from the ballet was.

The ballet draws new people to the world of ballet and keeps it interesting for those who have seen it many times before. In the last few decades, there has been some controversy over demeaning stereotypes, but the ballet continues to be the most popular and successful event of many ballet companies’ seasons.

The Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra’s “Nutcracker Party” in Hurleyville

Join the Sullivan County Chamber Orchestra in celebrating the holidays during their Nutcracker Party where they will perform a chamber orchestra arrangement of Tchaikovsky’s iconic Nutcracker conducted by the arranger himself, Yoon Jae Lee.

The entire music of the ballet will be performed by the full Orchestra complete with conductor, winds and brass, and joining them will be select Nesin Cultural Arts students from the

Fine and Performing Arts programs and Aspiring Young Musicians Orchestra.

Nutcracker Suite in Newburgh

Now in his seventh season of Greater Newburgh Symphony Orchestra (GNSO) leadership, Russell Ger, Music Director of the GNSO, has led the Orchestra to new attendance records and artistic heights.

In addition to seasonal favorites, this year GNSO will add a very special new element, sure to be a joyous event, to its spectacular annual Holiday Concert - O Night Divine.

“The GNSO has set the standard in our region for creating musical Holiday magic,” said Maestro Ger.

“In addition to our classic favorites, such as The First Noel and The Christmas Song (“Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire”), this year we are adding a wonderful new element! Young students from local dance studios will join the orchestra on-stage to perform Tchaikovsky’s beloved Nutcracker Suite. It’s sure to be a joyous celebration for all.”

The dancers participating in O Night

Divine represent High Definition Dance of New Windsor, Ballet Art Studio of Beacon, and Take the Leap dance studio of Gardiner.

Maestro Ger also reminded GNSO supporters that the Holiday Concert is the best-attended of the year and has sold out in the past. “Get your tickets early,” he enthused.

O Night Divine will be presented December 10 at 4:00pm in Mount Saint Mary College’s Aquinas Hall, 330 Powell Avenue, Newburgh.

Tickets: newburghsymphony.org or at the door. Free admission for students with valid ID.

The students will enhance the classic holiday tale with some original narration, choreography and music, and will invite the audience to participate in some of the scenes.

Guests are encouraged to arrive early

to visit “The Nutcracker Boutique”, selling nutcracker items and “The Land of the Sweets” selling refreshments. The shops will be open throughout the show.

Nutcracker Party takes place twice on December 10, at 2:00pm and 7:00pm, and the locale is the Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre, 221 Main Street, Hurleyville. (Snow date: December 11 at 2:00pm and 7:00pm).

This is a FREE event. Reservations are required as seating is limited. Contact marina@nesinculturalarts.org or call 845-798-9006 to reserve your tickets.

Rock-n-Roll Holiday Music

Singer, songwriter, instrumentalist and producer Eric Lipper’s love of music began on a toy piano that he got for his 2nd birthday. Throughout school, he learned trumpet and piano formally, and used every free ‘study’ period to grab a nylon guitar from the music room closet and get acquainted. After starting his own rock bands in high school and at SUNY Purchase, he took an opportunity to play keyboards with The Platters.

Eric’s own songs and music range from very melodic to quite experimental. Immediately fascinated by the ghostly 1920’s recordings of The Carter Family,

Eric started The Tweedlers, a folk group that spent five summers entertaining at county fairs all around the northeast. He has performed with The Drifters, The Chiffons, Lou Christie, Bobby Lewis and Danny and The Juniors. As a solo act, or as part of a band, Eric has played in theatres across the country.

See him perform a special rock and roll holiday music concert at the Greenwood Lake Public Library, 79 Waterstone Road, on December 17, from 1:00pm2:00pm.

Registration is required: 845-477-8377 ext. 101 or visit www.gwllibrary.org.

Widely admired German singers will present a two-part program spanning eight centuries and numerous cultures: Christmas Then and Now and Carols from All Over The World for Kindred Spirits Arts, in cooperation with Milford Hospitality Group

The wide range of tonal colors, the joy the singers convey on stage, their sound culture and their varied and imaginative programs never fail to inspire. These five singers from Leipzig have won several international prizes and competitions - most recently the OPUS Klassik for “Best Choral Recording.”

With over 50 concerts a year, Calmus is always a welcome guest throughout Europe and North America

alike. Influenced by the tradition of the old masters of Leipzig, the singers are at home in the vocal music of the Renaissance, Baroque, and Romantic periods alike.

Music Institute of Sullivan & Ulster

The MISU Community and Youth Orchestra will be performing arrangements of standards such as the overture to Die Fledermaus and Bartok’s Romanian Dances, “that they have been rehearsing and practicing very hard at this fall!” exclaimed MISU Director Anastasia Solberg

“The second half of the program will be our usual holiday recipe of Corelli’s Christmas Concerto with myself and the guest artists, and Albinoni’s Adagio,” she continued. “There will be a surprise to end the evening with a flare, adding Greg Dinger and his guitar, Paul Chambers’ drums and all the other musicians in the room to top off the evening.

“In addition, the kids will perform

a medley from various rock groups’ ‘favorite hits’. We are recruiting brass from Rondout to fill it out as well as the aforementioned. This is a fundraising event so, although we will not turn anyone away, please think of giving a donation,” concluded Anastasia.

The free concert is on December 15 at 7:30pm in St John’s Episcopal Church, 40 Market Street, Ellenville and will also be on Zoom through Eventbrite. Refreshments will be served.

Holiday Harps in Warwick

Enjoy a refreshing break from the holi-“daze” with a special concert by the Ramswick Harp Ensemble. For their third visit to the Albert Wisner Public Library in Warwick, harpists Ann Carter-Cox, and Penny McCulloch will treat Library patrons to an hour of favorite holiday and other tunes, guaranteed to please even the Grinch!

Now retired from a Youth Choir post in Connecticut, Ann has focused on music for the Celtic harp and has returned to singing the music which she most loves: the song repertoire written before 1750 and the historical folk songs of the British Isles and the southern Appalachian mountains.

Penny has played the harp since she was in high school. “The harp is Ireland’s

national symbol and dates back to the times Chieftains ruled the land and they all had minstrels,” she said. “The harpers transmitted the news of the day and were powerful in getting people to rally around a cause. All the harpers were men, since women and slaves were forbidden to play the harp. How times have changed! Most harpers today are women.”

Funded by a generous gift to the Albert Wisner Public Library Foundation by Glenn P. and Susan D. Dickes, Music on McFarland presents Holiday Harps! with the Ramswick Harp Ensemble on December 4 at 2:00pm, at the Wisner Library, 1 McFarland Drive, Warwick.

Admission is free. Contact the Library’s Help Desk at 845-986-1047, ext. 3 for additional information.

Sugar Loaf: Incredible Craftsmanship

Sugar Loaf, a hamlet of artists, artisans and unique shops, is an authentic pre-Revolutionary village, home to close to 20 shops and studios, a state of the art performing arts theatre, restaurants, and a craft brewery.

In a world of big box shopping experiences you will

find Sugar Loaf a welcome change with old world values, incredible craftsmanship, and something for everyone - and every budget. See and explore the Village during their annual Holiday Celebration on December 10 from Noon-6:00pm. See ad page 17.

Photography in Sugar Loaf

The approximate elevation of Sugar Loaf Mountain is 1,138 feet above sea level. The Orange County Land Trust (OCLT) is purchasing this beautiful, scenic ‘masterpiece’ to open public recreational access to the mountain, which has long been privately owned, and to transfer the land to NYS Parks to be connected to Goosepond Mountain State Park.

“Sugar Loaf Mountain has long been a destination for locals,” said Jeremy Schneider, OCLT’s outreach and programs coordinator. “But it’s technically never been publicly accessible. Essentially, all of the people that have visited over the years have been trespassing on private property. This project would provide the firstever publicly accessible access to the mountain for hiking, photography and other forms of passive recreation and enjoyment, and that in itself would be a boon for the village of Sugar Loaf.”

Instructors at Desmond: Small Works

“Painting is my meditation on creation. It empties me of everything but the moment and what gifts I bring to it. Whatever knowledge, seeing and inspiration I possess give birth to my work. One of my many teachers, Lisa Specht said, “Knowledge is the one thing you can give away and still keep.” I have been blessed to be on both the receiving and giving ends of that equation from all my teachers and students,” says Gayle Clark Fedigan

Donna Prizzi has pursued the arts since her childhood. As an artist and avid gardener she’s drawn to nature’s seasons and the ephemeral beauty of the garden, flora and the ever-changing world that exists around it. She enjoys the challenge of capturing the unique essence of each subject; whether the still life, portrait or landscape. She has participated in many plein air events,

The Gift of A Sundwall Artwork

Joseph and Elizabeth Sundwall met at the School of Practical Philosophy in NYC. Both study and tutor at a branch of the School in Wallkill, where the core teaching is Advaita, non-duality.

Basic principals of the philosophy are self-awareness: let the work begin from stillness, allow the attention to rest on the work, surrender all unnecessary thinking, and follow the flow of the work without seeking results.

The Sundwalls rediscover themselves in the creative process. When other concerns fall away, they delight in the feel of the tools being used while simply watching the work take place.

Santa’s Here, Too

“It’s a gift to live a life with someone who is equally passionate about art and devoted to making it. Although we work separately for long stretches of time, we can always rely on the other’s support and encouragement. It’s ever illuminating to see what has emerged from our work each day, and to share new insights that inform it and keep us going back to the easel,” said Joseph.

Check out the ad on page 11 for details about the Sundwall’s Holiday Gallery at the Regal Bag building in Newburgh, where Elizabeth’s watercolors and pastels and Joseph’s oil paintings and portraits will be on view through December 17

Music, Lunch & Antarctic History

The Sullivan County Museum is home to a little known organization called the Frederick Cook Society. The origins of the Society date back to 1940, and the Society’s mission is to defend Dr. Cook’s disputed claim to the discovery of the North Pole. The Society will present a brief talk on Dr. Cook’s famous Belgica expedition, along with a concert by the band Little Sparrow featuring guitarist Van Manakas.

Book Talk: The Making of Kiryas Joel

Antarctic exploration and Americana music have in common, it turns out that the explorers on the Belgica expedition (first ship to overwinter in Antarctica) had a banjo, an accordion and a mandolin player on board! And in a strange twist of fate, the Frederick Cook Society Board consists of several musicians and members of the band Little Sparrow. They perform the music of Traffic, the Grateful Dead, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, John Prine and others.

American Shtetl: The Making of Kiryas Joel, a Hasidic Village in Upstate New York is a compelling account of how a group of Hasidic Jews established its own local government on American soil. While rejecting the norms of mainstream American society, Kiryas Joel has been stunningly successful in creating a world apart by using the very instruments of secular political and legal power that it disavows.

with its own elected local government. They show how constant legal and political battles defined and even bolstered the community, whose very success has coincided with the rise of political conservatism and multiculturalism in American society over the past forty years.

Van is a world class musician who has performed on five continents and in all fifty states with such musical greats as Paul Bley, Miroslav Vitous, Gil Evans and Butch Baldasarri, in addition to performing with Americana band, Little Sparrow which consists of Aldo Troiani & Carol Smith (guitars & vocals), and Ellen Iovino who plays congas and provides harmony. They’ll be joined by Nick Sherman on bass. And if you’re wondering what

The concert and lecture will be held on December 9, from Noon to 2:00pm Doors open at 11:30am. $10 suggested donation includes fresh pizza and a beverage. Come early and enjoy the exhibition of Antarctic and Arctic photography by Dr. Cook, currently on display in the Museum’s auditorium.

The Museum is at 265 Main Street, Hurleyville. Call 845 434-8044 for more info, or visit the Frederick Cook Society website at frederickcookpolar.org.

Authors Nomi M Stolzenberg and David N. Myers paint a richly textured portrait of daily life in Kiryas Joel, exploring the community’s guiding religious, social, and economic norms. They delve into the roots of Satmar Hasidism and its charismatic founder, Rebbe Joel Teitelbaum, following his journey from 19th century Hungary to post World War II Brooklyn, where he dreamed of founding an ideal Jewish town modeled on the shtetls of eastern Europe.

Stolzenberg and Myers chart the rise of Kiryas Joel as an official municipality

Timely and accessible, American Shtetl unravels the strands of cultural and legal conflict that gave rise to one of the most vibrant religious communities in America, and reveals a way of life shaped by both selfsegregation and unwitting assimilation.

Chester Public Library is inviting you to meet the authors on Zoom as they discuss their book on December 7 at 7:00pm. Only 52 spaces are available. To register, visit www. chesternypubliclibrary.com/calendar.

“SUNY Sullivan produces a contemporary, a classic, and a musical every year. In the Heights fulfills our 20222023 season that focuses on Sueñitos (little dreams). The season name was inspired by the students we serve at SUNY Sullivan and the strong community we have created in our theater program that helps nurture dreams.

“This little community banded together during the pandemic to keep us busy and inspired. Without our little dreams, our sueñitos, we would not have survived the pandemic. The pandemic proved to us that what is important in our lives is our families and our community.

“To celebrate this lesson we are producing shows that focus on our sueñitos. The things that we strive for and the sanctuaries we create in our homes and our communities,” - Jessica López-Barkl and Nick López, SUNY Sullivan Theatre Directors.

In the Heights is a 2008 Tony Awardwinning Best Musical with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda and book by Quiara Alegría Hudes. The setting is

the vibrant neighborhood of Washington Heights of New York City where bodega owner Usnavi and his friends dream, hope and work for a bright future.

It’s about the universal need to maintain and support dreams. The need for family. The need for love. Why hope is important. Why joy in times of hardship is important.

Candlelight Tour

For over forty years, the Historical Society of Newburgh Bay and the Highlands has organized an annual holiday Candlelight Tour of historic homes, churches and buildings in and around Newburgh. From humble beginnings, the tour became one of the most eagerly anticipated Newburgh events of the year and their biggest fundraiser.

This year’s tour will feature a combination of public and private spaces, including stately homes, buildings that have recently been rehabilitated, new construction and some of Newburgh’s most cherished landmarks. And of course, as usual, the Captain David Crawford House, authentically decorated in a 19thcentury style with flowers and greens, will serve as a centerpiece.

The tradition of the Annual Candlelight Tour of historic homes and buildings is on December 11, from Noon-5:00pm.

For discounted advance tickets, visit www.newburghhistoricalsociety.com or call 845-561-2585. Tickets can also be purchased at the Crawford House, 189 Montgomery Street, Newburgh.

Sister Sylvia Bielen, OP (formerly Sister Theresa Clare) of the Dominican Sisters of Hope, Ossining, transitioned on October 26, 2022, at St. Catherine of Siena Convent in Caldwell, New Jersey.

She was 97 years of age.

Sister Sylvia was a teacher in several schools in New Jersey and Bishop Dunn Memorial School in Newburgh from 1955-1963. A Professor in the Art Department at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh from 1975-2009, she was one of the committee members responsible for organizing the annual Artist on Campus event that was well attended there for many years.

She gave lectures and workshops in spirituality and art at retreat centers, spent four summers in Mississippi conducting art workshops for the resident teenagers, and attended an art workshop in Ireland.

In her spare time, she enjoyed creating unique greeting cards, reading, sewing, quilting, cooking, studying Spanish, and doing water aerobics. Her love of music brought her to join the singers in the Greater Newburgh Symphony Chorale. Her greatest pleasure was watching chefs on TV and experimenting in her galley kitchen.

The following submissions are from Sr. Sylvia’s dear friends...

“Sr. Sylvia embodied kindness, laughter, humility, hope. She kept her vows and held fast to her virtues. She could be silly but was always sacred, and her joyfulness came knocking on our door.

“There’s an old Irish saying; “never arrive with one arm as long as the other.” To our family birthdays and holiday celebrations, Sylvia brought handmade gifts; beautiful cards, afghans, a manger, my daughter’s bridal veil, and the best gift of all, her lighthearted presence.

“Many Halloweens she came as a Gypsy replete with a tambourine.

“She did suffer fools gladly, especially me, and we traveled to many places together but were never on a guilt trip. Sr. Sylvia opened the door of her world to me; my teaching at Desmond Center, the Artist on Campus Committee, and her Dominican Sisters of Hope.

“I loved my Dominican Mom dearly and know there’s a tambourine in Heaven.”

“Sr. Sylvia was a faithful member of the Committee that produced Artists on Campus for over 30 years. She not only partook of the planning meetings and worked the day of the event but her liaison with the college was so important to our success. Her gifts as an artist was a prime factor when the committee met after the show to select an artwork for purchase for the Mount’s permanent collection.

“Before she left the area we discussed the growth of the arts in the Mid-Hudson and that I thought the show had run its course. She said to me, “Joe, all good things come to an end.” And that’s how I remember her life.”

Best of The Eagles in Sugar Loaf

Best of the Eagles (BOTE) is the most exact interpretation of the music of the Eagles in America, bar none! Each member mirrors his counterpart in the Eagles instrumentally and vocally. However, this is no simple copy band or impersonator act but rather a group of excellent musicians who expertly and authentically re-create the songs, the music, the vocals and the magical aura of one of America’s greatest rock bands.

Performing all of the fan favorites including Take it to the Limit, New Kid in Town, Lyin’ Eyes, Take it Easy, Life in

the Fast Lane, Hotel California and so many others, the band has sold out many venues in the region.

See them perform on December 30 at 8:00pm at the Sugar Loaf Performing Arts Center, Kings Highway, Chester. All proceeds to benefit the Sugar Loaf Film Festival. www.sugarloafpacny.com

Plein Air Works in Greenwood Lake

Artist Chrissy Pahucki is known for her plein air landscape paintings. Her awards include “Best of Show” at the Sloatsburg Plein Air and Morristown Plein Air exhibitions. She also won second place in the Hudson Valley Plein Air Festival and “Best Depiction of Nature” at Ellicott City.

A member of the National Oil & Acrylic Painters Society and Plein Air Artists of Colorado, Chrissy had the following to say about her work: “When I first started painting en plein air in 2006, I went out for a few hours each week with a group of local artists. Being outside and the challenge of capturing my location on canvas was often the highlight of my week.

“I now paint professionally, competing in national plein air competitions all across the country. Traveling to paint and painting to travel has become such a rewarding part of my life. I paint mostly

natural landscapes with acrylics or oils. I am especially drawn to the way water affects the geology, color and vegetation of the environment,” she concluded.

Chrissy loves the outdoors and spends much of her summer participating in plein air festivals in New York, Pennsylvania, Maine, Maryland and New Mexico. During the colder months she paints landscapes and nature studies from photographs in her studio. Using acrylics, she captures the natural essence of her subjects.

The Greenwood Lake Public Library, located at 79 Waterstone Road, will host the works of Chrissy Pahucki for the entire month of December at their Works of Art Gallery.

A new local artist is featured every month. If you are interested in showcasing your work, contact Adult Services at the Greenwood Lake Public Library: 845477-8377 extension 111.
