Letter From The PUBLISHER

Pickleball, pickleball, and more pickleball. The craze is real and thriving across the entire DFW Metroplex. Everywhere I turn, and throughout social media, week after week and every weekend there seems to be a pickleball tournament within a short drive. Large pickleball complexes are opening up monthly, country club tennis courts are being converted to pickleball courts, and DFW even has pickleball technology companies that analyze your swing and your play. Pickleball-specific sporting apparel is all the rage, pickleball rackets are now a main attraction in many sporting goods stores, and pickleball gadgets and apps are making it easy for enthusiasts of all ages to enjoy the sport.

Dallas is also home to the Professional Pickleball Association, and Farmers Branch hosted the 2024 World Pickleball Championships. And to top it all off, Dallas even has a national champion pro pickleball team, the Dallas Flash, featured on this month’s cover.

This month’s Pickleball Special Issue covers all this and more. Read all about pickleball in DFW, get to know your Dallas Flash pro pickleball team, and learn which rackets are good for your pickleball game.

Also of note in this issue is a list of upcoming DFW area pickleball tournaments for those that are seeking competitive pickleball opportunities this Spring. Also, check out a schedule of upcoming DFW area triathlons and runs included with our DFW triathlons article provided by ENDUR3, one of our proud DFW cycling and triathlon partners located in Frisco.

We also highlight a very special pickleball inspirational hero in this month’s issue. Taylor Nichols is an adaptive pickleball program director for the DFW and nationwide ChickenNPickle. Taylor has been a tremendous advocate for inclusion of wheelchair handicap and adaptive sports programs throughout DFW and nationwide.

We also spotlight several pickleball clubs and indoor facilities in this month’s issue.

Featured this month are the Arlington Renegades and the UFL, a newly formed football league last year formally associated with the XFL. The UFL and the Renegades kick off their season opener the last weekend of March.

Special thanks this month to two very good friends Brady Cole and Lori Kennedy who have

Many thanks as well to our 170+ rack partners in 20 cities throughout the DFW Metroplex. I recently visited every single health, wellness, and fitness company that agreed to supply our magazines to their members, customers, and patients when I dropped off their DFW Health and Fitness Magazine tabletop magazine racks. Their response to this new print and digital venture was overwhelming and very encouraging. I welcome the opportunity to partner with and display DFW Health and Fitness Magazine at any and every business that cares for the health and wellness of those living and thriving in their communities.

Your Friend,

Build Your ENDURANCE:

Have you ever wanted to try a TRI? Well, you’re in the right place. DFW has a thriving triathlon community with a host of groups and events to get involved with, but how exactly do you get started?

My name is Jenny Fletcher, and after a 12+ year career as a professional triathlete, I have shifted my focus to helping others achieve their own personal triathlon goals. For some; that may be signing up for their first event, for others it is a PR, and for the die-hards, it is earning that coveted World Championships slot. My ultimate goal as a coach is to help you find joy in your fitness journey and help you achieve the goals you have set before you.

Triathlon consists of three different sports combined into one adventure with transitions being in between them. Swim, T1, Bike, T2, and Run. This creates quite a challenge of putting all three together but one that is such an achievement once performed.

THERE ARE FOUR COMMON DISTANCES TO SIGN UP FOR.

• Sprint Distance - which is 300-750m swim, 12mile bike, and 5k (3.1m) run. (Often Sprints will use a pool for the swim portion which is another great way to tri-a-tri without the fear of open water swimming).

• Olympic Distance - 1500m swim, 40k bike/ 25miles, and 10k run/ 6.2 miles. This is the distance you see racing at the Olympics and is the stepping stone to the longer distances.

• Half Distance, (Half Ironman) - 1.2-mile Swim, 56-mile bike, and 13.1m run. Once people have dipped their toes in the water with a Sprint or Olympic distance race this is often the most pursued distance among the tri-community.

• Full Distance, (Ironman) - 2.4 mile Swim, 112-mile Bike, and 26.2 Mile Run. A full distance is not for the faint of heart but one of the greatest achievements one can accomplish when embarking upon this multi-sports journey.

Triathlon experienced a slight shift in its participation demographics during the Covid period. As a result of the closure of gyms, fitness classes, and group workouts, a lot of gym goers went looking for a new challenge outdoors in the form of triathlon. There is something about being outdoors that breathes life into us mere mortals and lights the fire deep within to discover the great unknown. There are races all over the world, so sign up for one and begin that journey.

One of the unique things about triathlon is the camaraderie and community. There are not many sports out there where you get to race with the fastest in the world and your new best friends at the same time. Although triathlon is an individual sport, it takes a whole lot of other people to get you across that finish line. Your support team becomes the backbone of your success. Sherpas who are often your significant other, maybe a coach, or part of that cheer squad who are invested in helping you; by being the glue to keep you from falling apart. They are there to support and encourage you through your training, racing, and the in-between spaces where you often question, “Why am I doing this?”

You need community which you will often hear is everyone’s favorite part of this sport. You can get involved by joining a local Masters Swim Team, A Running Club, and Cycling Clubs, and your best bet for finding out how to do all that is through a local Tri Club.

So what’s stopping you from trying a TRI?

Why Can,t I Sleep? HelpfulPharmacist

DFW has a sleeping problem. No matter what we do for fun, or for a living, or what background we come from, most of us can say we are busy. Too busy. Too many things to do and too little time to do them. With all of this going on, it can be hard to get enough sleep or to wind down and turn our brains off so we can rest. A lack of proper sleep can cause increased anxiety and stress, weight gain, loss of attention, and a decrease in energy levels. So, how do we combat this restlessness that affects up to 60% of us at some time or another?

You actually know the answers already. We will go over some tips, but it’s going to take some effort and discipline, which for some reason we tend not to want to put in, especially when it comes to our health. Too busy to eat right, too busy to exercise, too busy to go to bed on time…. you see the pattern. We can do better.

The key to sleeping well is to develop a healthy sleep routine. Here are some pointers.

• Go to bed at a consistent time. You have to train your body to let it know when it is time to sleep. Keeping roughly the same bedtime each night can help greatly. Try to keep this consistent even on the weekends. If you want to move your bedtime an hour earlier, try changing it by increments of 15 minutes at a time.

• Allow your brain time to calm down, or at least focus on something less stressful or stimulating. Put your phone down and put your laptop away. Working, studying, or

scrolling through videos up until bedtime is not a good way to prepare for sleep.

• Don’t eat right before bed. The digestive process can make your body restless. Plus, going to bed on a mostly empty stomach can help you lose weight.

• Avoid alcohol. Drinking can help you relax sometimes, and it is a CNS depressant, but studies show that when your body processes alcohol it can lead to a lack of quality REM sleep.

• Do something to relax. We recommend reading, using breathing techniques, meditating, or listening to music. Repeating your relaxing routine each night can distract your brain from more stressful or stimulating things, and let your body know that it is time to sleep.

• Television is not normally recommended, but it can be distracting or relaxing when your brain just won’t turn off. Try searching for something you are really not interested in. Golf or a nice monotone history or nature show can work great to put your lights out.

• Limit caffeine intake. This one is obvious.

• Make sure your room is dark and cool for optimal sleeping conditions. If you live in an area where noise is an issue, consider using an ambient noise maker or phone app to help drown out the noise.

• Enlist help from your spouse or family member. Having an accountability partner to remind you about bedtime or take your phone out of your hand might be just the thing you need to be successful.

But this is a pharmacy column, what about medication? Medication can help and is the right choice for some people, but it can have some drawbacks. There are several reasons why I don’t love sleeping medications. The most prominent one is that they can be either emotionally or physically addictive. This can put you into the “can’t sleep without it” mindset, which is not a great place to be. Sleeping medications, especially prescription meds, can cause dizziness and make people prone to falling, sometimes resulting in sleepwalking, or can have a hangover effect in the morning if taken too late at night. Building a tolerance can cause a need for higher doses or stronger meds.

Taking medication is the easy way out, and far too many people rely on it. Yes, I know you want to drink coffee mixed with whiskey while in bed watching television and simultaneously scrolling videos on your phone, and then pop a pill and pass out. Developing healthy sleep habits is far better for you and will (eventually) result in better, more restful sleep for most. If you truly have insomnia or need some help to get rest during a stressful time please enlist the help of a healthcare professional to help guide you to the best choices.

Enter rock climbing – a sport that’s fun for all ages -

There are a variety of rock-climbing gyms throughout the DFW Metroplex perfect for dropping off your kids for an hour or two of activities. Better yet,

Many of the rock-climbing complexes in our great city also offer additional health and fitness activities, such as yoga and pilates, and even full-fledged gyms and exercise equipment.

“Imagine a playground that stretches up to the ceiling, filled with colorful holds and exciting challenges. That’s what a climbing gym looks like through a child’s eyes!”

WHY CLIMBING IS GREAT FOR KIDS

1. Physical Development: Climbing helps improve strength, flexibility, and coordination.

2. Problem-Solving Skills: Each route is like a puzzle, encouraging critical thinking.

3. Confidence Building: Overcoming challenges on the wall boosts self-esteem.

4. Social Skills: Climbing is a community sport, fostering friendships and teamwork.

GETTING STARTED: TIPS FOR INTRODUCING KIDS TO CLIMBING

1. Start Small: Visit a climbing gym near you! The front desk staff will show you around the gym, walk you through basic safety information, and send you on your way! We suggest the kids begin with bouldering (low climbing without ropes), just to get them comfortable with heights.

2. Make it Fun: Turn climbs into games, like racing to touch specific colored holds. Check out some creative climbing games on the Movementgyms.com blog. Movement Gyms has six locations throughout the Metroplex and offers a wide array of climbing walls, yoga, pilates, and fitness classes for all ages,

3. Celebrate Every Achievement: Whether it’s reaching a new high point or trying a tricky move, praise their efforts.

4. Lead by Example: Climb alongside them to show it’s fun for all ages!

5. Be Patient: Some kids take to climbing instantly, others need time. Let them progress at their own pace.

GEAR UP

Kids don’t need much to start climbing, but properly fitting shoes and a chalk bag can make their experience more enjoyable. Most climbing gyms, including Movement Gyms in six DFW locations, offer rental equipment for beginners.

Movement Gyms also offers day passes and monthly memberships for as little as $75 good for all five of their DFW locations and all 30 locations nationwide. Membership includes unlimited rock climbing and access to their yoga and fitness classes. Movement Gyms include guided flow, hit, and core classes, all geared toward strength training, conditioning, and recovery for climbing. The membership or day pass to Movement Gyms also provides you full access to their fitness gym located inside their rock-climbing facility.

Your first class is free, a great option for anyone to get into climbing. Membership to Movement Gyms includes exclusive perks from brands that share the love for

adventure, including 40% off all Spartan races. Other benefits of their membership are a subscription to Kaya with access to over 100 digital bouldering guidebooks, a subscription to OnX Backcountry, and a discount to the Summit Journal.

TAKING IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL

As your child or teen’s interest grows, consider enrolling them in structured programs. Many rock-climbing gyms offer after-school programs and even train elite rock-climbing competitive teams.

The Canyons Climbing Gym in Frisco is the home to Lone Star Climbing, an independently operated, youth climbing team and program dedicated to the healthy development of kids by supporting them through the sport of rock climbing.

The Canyons Climbing Gym offers kids and teens climbing club instruction, coaching, and training to meet the needs of our youngest and most accomplished athletes. As the athletes develop their skills, they prepare them to compete in local, regional, and national competitions. Coaches help them achieve success as well as teach them the value of working towards and accomplishing a goal. Past climbers have qualified for the USA Climbing Team and gone on to compete on the World Cup circuit.

Remember, the goal is to have fun! Climbing offers a unique blend of physical activity, mental challenge, and social interaction. It’s not just about reaching the top – it’s about the journey, the friendships made, and the confidence gained along the way.

So, next time you’re looking for a new after-school activity, why not give climbing a try? Your kids and teens might just discover a new passion that will keep them active, engaged, and reaching for new heights – literally!

Spring Football FRENZY With The UFL’S ARLINGTON RENEGADES

Head Coach Bob Stoops

Calling all DFW Football fans. Arlington has another championship caliber football team in town, the Arlington Renegades, one of eight teams that now make up The United Football League (UFL).

UFL is the premier spring football platform, formed by the merger of the XFL and USFL in 2024 under the combined ownership of Redbird Capital Partners, FOX, Dany Garcia, and Dwayne Johnson. The UFL has eight teams in Arlington (TX), Birmingham (AL), Detroit (MI), Houston (TX), Memphis (TN), San Antonio (TX), St. Louis (MO), and Washington D.C.

The Arlington Renegades open their 2025 season on March 29 in Choctaw Stadium, the former home of the Texas Rangers. Tickets are on sale now for their season opener against their Texas rival, San Antonio Brahmas, with a 3 pm nationally televised game. The Renegades will host five games at Choctaw Stadium during the 10-week UFL season while playing the other five on the road.

Home games will feature two interconference and three conference games

with key matchups that include teams like the D.C. Defenders and state rivals San Antonio Brahmas and the USFL conference Houston Roughnecks.

The UFL has made the city of Arlington their entire league football operations Hub, encompassing multiple facilities in central Arlington, which will serve as the football hub for all eight UFL teams. Beginning with training camps in March and continuing through practices during the 10-week regular season and two-week postseason, Arlington will host over 600 players, coaches, and staff gathering to meet, train, and practice.

This hybrid Hub model provides players, including the Arlington Renegades, access to full-time, on-site support from coaches and athletic training staff. The Hub also serves as a content creation center, allowing the league, its teams and its players an opportunity to build personal brands and engage with fans through social media, in-person events and other media platforms, tapping into the worldwide expertise and reach of UFL Owners, Dany Garcia, Dwayne Johnson and RedBird Capital Partners.

League owners called the Hub a headquarters for a new culture. With attention to player health and safety, technology, medical care, and more, The Hub serves as a platform for UFL players to achieve greatness on and off the field. “Because we have a Hub, we have all of our athletes here. All eight teams, working together and getting the absolute best care,” said Dany Garcia. “We made the decision we wanted parity across the board when it came to giving our athletes and our teams the best. When we are here, we are all UFL.”

A year ago, a prevailing theme within the USFL and XFL’s merger was that paring down 16 teams into 8 for the United Football League would elevate the level of play. The merger included four teams from the USFL and XFL to form the new eightteam UFL. The best of the best from both leagues condensed in the 2024 season and helped strengthen the on-field product last year.

The Arlington Renegades have high hopes for the upcoming 2025 season under the coaching leadership of Bob Stoops. Stoops, now entering his 4th year as head coach of the Arlington Renegades, was the XFL’s first head coaching hire in 2019. Stoops coached the team through five games of the abbreviated 2020 season and was the only XFL coach to return to the League in the same capacity as 2020 after COVID.

Prior to joining the professional ranks, Stoops spent more than 30 years as a college coach, including 18 seasons as head coach at Oklahoma from 1999 to 2016.

In 2023 Stoops led the Arlington Renegades to the 2023 XFL Championship. With the team’s 35-26 victory over the D.C. Defenders in the 2023 XFL Championship Game, Stoops became just the fifth head coach to win a championship at both the professional and college levels, as he also coached for the Oklahoma Sooners. The former Oklahoma coach, who won the 2000 BCS National Championship, joined Pete Carroll (Seattle Seahawks / USC), Jimmy Johnson (Dallas Cowboys / Miami), Barry Switzer (Dallas

Cowboys / Oklahoma), and Paul Brown (Cleveland Browns / Ohio State) in the exclusive club.

The Renegades have brought back most of its coaching staff from last season, with Rick Mueller returning as the team’s general manager. Offensive coaches Chuck Long, Jonathan Himebauch, and Reggie Davis are back on the field, joined by defensive coaches Jay Hayes and Marvin Sanders, as well as special teams coordinator Scott Spurrier.

Arlington has brought in Chris Woods as linebackers coach, who previously held the same role at Temple University, and Spencer Duncan as defensive quality control coach, after serving as a defensive analyst at FIU.

The Arlington Renegades recently resigned both QB Holton Ahlers and WR Juwan Manigo. These were the first official “re-signings” for the team.

Ahlers spent his college days at the ECU Pirates, where he racked up over 13,900 passing yards and 97 touchdowns. He spent time in the NFL with the Seattle

Seahawks before joining the Arlington Renegades last year as a backup QB.

The first skilled position player to return to Arlington is none other than return specialist Juwan Manigo. Manigo didn’t see too much action as a wide receiver, recording just six catches for 32 yards in the UFL. That said, he was one of the top returners in the entire UFL. After dominating down in Mexico, the Renegades brought the 5’6” speedster to the UFL last year, and he did not disappoint. Manigo returned 43 kicks for 954 yards this year and also returned 14 punts for 135 yards.

Other recent 2024 Renegades who resigned for the 2025 season include OT Adrian Ealy. LS Antonio Ortiz, RB Devin Darrington, DB Jamal Carter, CB Jamar Summers, and OLB Willie Taylor III

The Renegades will open the 2025 season at home against the San Antonio Brahmas. Kickoff is scheduled for March 29 at 3:00 PM CT, and the game will be televised on FOX.

HEALTH ON A SHELF

Overnight OATS Vs. Cooked OATS

Which is Better?

W
hen it comes to choosing between overnight oats and cooked oats, the decision often boils down to personal preference and lifestyle. Both options offer unique benefits that cater to different needs and tastes.

WHAT ARE OVERNIGHT OATS VS COOKED OATS?

Overnight Oats: Overnight oats are prepared by soaking raw oats in liquid (like almond milk or oat milk) overnight at room temperature. This soaking process helps break down phytic acid, a compound that can interfere with the absorption of nutrients in the small intestine.

By morning, the oats become softer and more digestible, offering a smoother texture. They are a popular choice among those seeking a quick and nutritious breakfast option, especially on busy mornings. Additionally, overnight oats tend to have a lower glycemic index compared to regular oatmeal, which can help manage blood sugar levels throughout the morning.

Cooked Oats: On the other hand, cooked oats, whether it’s steel-cut oats, rolled oats, or quick-cooking oats, undergo a heating process that alters their texture and taste. Cooking oatmeal on the stove or in the microwave results in a warmer, heartier meal that some people prefer, especially on cold mornings.

This method also reduces cooking time, making it a go-to for those who need a warm breakfast quickly. Cooked oats retain their fiber content and provide a sustained release of energy due to their complex carbohydrate structure. They are versatile and can be customized with toppings like fresh fruit, nuts, or a drizzle of maple syrup to enhance flavor and nutrition.

Nutritional Comparison: Both overnight oats and cooked oats are whole grains rich

in soluble fiber, which supports digestive health and helps lower cholesterol levels. They are also sources of plant-based protein, particularly when paired with toppings like Greek yogurt, chia seeds, or peanut butter. While overnight oats may retain more resistant starch due to the soaking process, cooked oats offer nutty flavors and a satisfying texture that appeals to many.

WHICH IS BETTER FOR WEIGHT MANAGEMENT AND HEART HEALTH?

Choosing between overnight oats and cooked oats depends largely on individual health goals and dietary preferences. For weight management, both options can be part of a balanced diet when portioned appropriately.

Overnight oats may be favored for their convenience and ability to make ahead. They are a great option for busy mornings or Sunday night meal prep. Cooked oats, however, provide a warm, comforting meal that can help curb hunger and promote a feeling of fullness.

WHAT TYPE OF OATS DO YOU USE FOR OVERNIGHT OATS?

For overnight oats, rolled oats are the most commonly used type. They are preferred because they absorb liquid well and become soft and creamy after soaking overnight. Here’s a brief overview of different types of oats and their suitability for overnight oats:

Rolled Oats: These are ideal for overnight oats. They are steamed and then rolled flat, which makes them quick to absorb liquid and become soft. They offer a good balance of texture and creaminess.

Quick Oats: These are similar to rolled oats but are processed further to cook faster. They can be used for overnight oats but may become very soft and mushy compared to rolled oats.

Steel-Cut Oats: These are whole oat groats that are chopped into pieces. They have a chewier texture and take longer to soften. If you prefer a more textured and less mushy result, you can use steel-cut oats, but they may require a longer soaking time or additional liquid.

Instant Oats: These are pre-cooked and then dried, which makes them very soft and often quite mushy. They’re not typically recommended for overnight oats as they don’t retain much texture after soaking. For the best results with overnight oats, stick with rolled oats or, if you prefer a chewier texture, steel-cut oats.

10 REASONS TO TRY OVERNIGHT OATS

Convenient Preparation: Overnight oats are incredibly easy to prepare. Simply mix your oats with liquid (like milk or a dairyfree alternative) and let them sit in the fridge overnight. This means you have a ready-to-eat breakfast waiting for you in the morning!

Time-Saver for Busy Mornings: With overnight oats, you can skip the morning rush of cooking. Just grab your jar from the fridge, and you’re good to go. Perfect for busy mornings or when you’re running late.

Nutritional Powerhouse: Overnight oats are packed with essential nutrients. Oats are a

great source of soluble fiber, which can help lower cholesterol and improve heart health. They also provide a steady release of energy and can aid in weight management.

Customizable and Versatile: You can tailor overnight oats to your taste preferences and dietary needs. Add a variety of toppings and mix-ins like fresh fruit, nuts, seeds, or yogurt to create endless flavor combinations.

Supports Digestive Health: The soluble fiber in oats promotes healthy digestion and helps regulate blood sugar levels. The soaking process also enhances the digestibility of the oats, making them easier on your stomach.

Helps with Weight Management: Due to their high fiber content, overnight oats can keep you full for longer, which helps manage appetite and supports weight loss goals.

Improves Heart Health: The soluble fiber in oats can help lower blood cholesterol levels, which is beneficial for heart health. Adding toppings like berries and nuts can further enhance this benefit.

Perfect for Meal Prep: Make overnight oats in advance. Store in the fridge for up to 5 days. This makes them a fantastic option for meal prepping, ensuring you always have a healthy breakfast ready.

Affordable and Accessible: Oats are a costeffective staple that’s easy to find in most grocery stores. They’re also available in

various types to suit your preference, from regular rolled oats to gluten-free options.

Kid-Friendly: Overnight oats can be a fun and nutritious breakfast option for kids. Let them customize their own jars with their favorite toppings, making breakfast a more interactive and enjoyable experience for the whole family.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Ultimately, whether you prefer the ease of overnight oats or the warmth of cooked oats, both offer nutritious additions to your breakfast routine. Experimenting with different types of oats—such as old-fashioned oats, steel-cut oats, or quick-cooking oats— along with various toppings and plant-based milks can help you discover your breakfast favorites. Whether you’re looking to improve digestive health, manage weight, or simply enjoy a delicious morning meal, oats in any form are a clear winner.

Next time you’re debating between a regular bowl of oatmeal or trying out a basic overnight oats recipe in a Mason jar, consider the health benefits, cooking processes, and your personal breakfast favorites. With options like Bob’s Red Mill oats and a variety of plant seeds and food bloggers, it’s easy to find a nutritious breakfast that fits your lifestyle.

Seeking a HEALTHY CONNECTION IN AN ERA OF ISOLATIONISM

W hat the heck is up with that clickbait title? Isolationism. Even if you’ve never heard the word, you’ve probably engaged in it at some point in your life. Connection or isolation? That is the question.

We are seeing a cultural trend toward individual isolationism in our culture. Isolationism is rooted in fear or anxiety. This narrative is often started in early childhood by the experience or perception of rejection. What if I can’t sit at the lunch table? What if nobody comes to my birthday party? What if they don’t want to play with me? If you’ve ever been rejected, you know what a formidable foe rejection truly is. These ideas start early and grow from there if we allow it. As with anything in life, what you seek, you shall find. Look for ways that you’re being rejected. You’re either going to identify them accurately, or you’re going to skew your own perception and create rejection sensitivity, which causes you to write false narratives in your mind. Once the fear of rejection takes hold, isolationism is allowed to flourish.

Dr Arthur Brooks, the “Happiness Guy”, a Harvard PhD and globally renowned Behavioral Scientist, teaches us that science can now understand where connection lives and how it is processed in our brains. People, especially young people, believe that connection can be found through a screen. It can’t. Existing in a void of interpersonal connection is a false sense of security and does not promote happiness.

Science shows us that everything we engage with through a screen is processed via our logical left brain. But the larger complex problems that give meaning and vitality to connection and relationships are all processed via our right brain. Love. Passion. Motivation. The fabric of life. Those are complex right brain problems. As a society, we are seeking to solve them with left-brain activities (screens, texting, social media, dating apps). We are failing and becoming more and more isolated as a result. Isolation often leads to depression, and depression leads to apathy. Apathy creates a barrier to activity and creativity, therefore leading to a more sedentary lifestyle. A sedentary, solitary lifestyle leads to health problems, and the spiral continues… I truly believe that isolation is a huge contributing factor to the suicide rates in our country.

We as a culture experienced a ubiquitously isolating event in 2020 with the pandemic. It doesn’t matter what side of the camp you’re on when it comes to COVID-19; we were all affected. Isolationism was either chosen or forced. The fear wasn’t only rejection at

that point. It was a deep fear, rooted in a lack of safety. Either social safety, physical safety, or medical safety. Everyone retreated. During that time, people found safety in their aloneness. They felt a false sense of security by keeping themselves or their families hidden. That is not an easy narrative to shake. Anxiety skyrocketed, and depression and suicide rates rose. I know that as a mental health clinician, I had the unfortunate experience of sending more teens and young adults to intensive outpatient care facilities in those 18 months than I had in the decade prior combined.

In 2021, death by suicide was the second leading cause of death for ages 10 to 14 and 25 to 35 and the third leading cause of death for ages 15 to 24. It hit us hard, and it hasn’t gone away. I believe that, as a society, we must start coming together again.

I wonder what would happen if we changed that conversation. I wonder what would

happen if we believed that asking for help is a strength. I wonder what would happen if we PUT DOWN OUR PHONES. I challenge each of you reading this to check your screen time averages over the past month. Now imagine what life would be like if you spent that time being present in person with your community, family, or friends.

Admitting that we need each other is vulnerable. Reaching out for connection takes bravery. My challenge to you is to be brave, seek connection, and start to build the life you want this year. Take risks, go outside, hold someone’s hand, be an encourager, and have a conversation. Replace thinking with doing. You are amazing in your own special way – show it to the world! We need YOU, and we need each other. Be well.

RallyingDFWAroundPickleball

During the post-pandemic years, the sport took off. Mainly because of the sport’s low impact, the impact of joints or muscles when playing was low compared to other more popular sports, according to a study by the Journal of Student Research—combined with court sizes being only ¼ of the size of a tennis court. Not only could anyone play, but not a lot of space is taken up by one match.

According to the USA Pickleball Places2Play Database, with over 11,000 known locations and 50,000 known courts, pickleball has become one of the fastest-growing sports overall.

From coast to coast, pickleball fever is truly in the air; things are no different here in North Texas. From the Metroplex to Ellis County, from courts to major facilities, to even the USA Pickleball World Championships, all taking place in the greater Dallas area. The 2024 PPA Tour Championships held at Brookhaven Country Club last Fall attracted over 57,000 fans and 4,700 participants. According to the PPA, the event was by far their largest ever attended national event and tournament.

“I’ve played many various sports throughout my entire life. I love being active, but I will tell you that there’s been no sport I’ve played previously that compares to my love for pickleball,” said Bryan Lee, a long-time player and part-time Pickleball Coach. “ If I go one day without playing pickleball, I miss it. It’s such a simple sport but somehow, the addictive quality of pickleball has a grasp on both myself and so many friends who play. It’s equal parts fun, exercise, social, and strategy.”

Numerous massive indoor and outdoor franchises are opening their facilities across the DFW Metroplex have helped the greater Dallas area to become the hub for all things pickleball. The Pickleball Kingdom has recently expanded its all-indoor facilities in Dallas, Allen, Plano, and Fort Worth. Impact Activities has five locations throughout the Metroplex and their McKinney Tennis Center location is host to the March 2025 Texas Open, an official PPA Tour event.

However, they are not the only ones. Dill Dinkers, another franchise, announced its plans to add up to 100 locations in and around Dallas in August.

“It’s nice to see it grow,” said Rob Jonson, an avid pickleball player from Alvord who converted a hay barn into a court. “More communities will see and add more courts.” The pickleball community continues to grow

The Rise of the Fastest-Growing Sport in the Region

in numerous ways, from Facebook groups to dedicated pages to all things pickleball. The long-lasting support for the sport has been massive. Celebrity influences include

Dallas Mavericks legendary longtime forward Dirk Nowitzki, Tom Brady, Lebron James, and numerous others who are either investing, buying, or partnering with professional pickleball leagues and teams. This should only further the impact of pickleball’s continuous growth.

“It’s a sport unlike any other that has such an addictive quality. They can’t build the courts fast enough to keep up with the surge in demand from pickleball,” says Lee. “I don’t believe it’s a fad, and I think it has so much more room for growth, with only

about 5% of the population in DFW having played pickleball at least once in the past year. If someone out there hasn’t yet tried it, I say. What are you waiting for!?”

Ultimately, the pickleball community has grown tremendously since the sport’s birth. Numerous opportunities are coming to DFW, both locally and globally. The massive spike in the influx of players, tournaments, and pickleball can only help the game progress.

Whether you’re looking for recreational fun or serious competition, Dallas has a pickleball court for you. With its growing network of players and top-notch facilities, the city is a fantastic place to enjoy the sport. So grab your paddle, hit the courts, and join the vibrant pickleball community in Dallas!

Dallas Flash Set to Defend Pickleball Championship Title

How Teamwork and Strategy Propelled Pro Team to the Top

T

he Pickleball scene in DFW is reaching a new height of popularity in 2025, and now the DFW area pickleball enthusiast community has a new team champion to follow and cheer, the 2024 defending Major League Pickleball Team Champions, your very own DALLAS FLASH!

That’s right. Our very best DFW pickleball pros have teamed up and recently brought home the very first championship trophy of Major League Pickleball Team Play. Congrats to our DFW Major League Pickleball national team champions, JW Johnson, Tyra Black, Angie GE, and Jorga Johnson.

Dallas Flash Pickleball was formed in 2023 by Mark Molthan, Todd Wagner, and Mark Cuban. Mark Molthan is a successful business leader and entrepreneur based in Dallas, known for his expertise in luxury home building and interior design. As the owner and managing director of Dallas Flash Pickleball, Molthan brings with him a wealth of experience in business management and a passion for sports. Molthan sees a unique opportunity to foster and rally the community around Dallas Flash Pickleball.

“Pickleball is growing substantially in the DFW area, and we are thrilled to be able to build a pro team and grow a fan base for pickleball in Dallas,” said Molthan. “We are excited to host one of the 2025 Major League Pickleball team competition weekend events in Dallas this coming July, after hosting the 2024 playoff round last year. We hope to make it a festival-type atmosphere, as we will host the entire league and compete at the Pickleball Universe in Carrollton.”

In 2024, the Dallas Flash achieved a historic milestone by being crowned the inaugural season-long champions of the 2024 Major League Pickleball Season. The No. 3 seed Dallas Flash secured their championship title with a dramatic 2-1 series victory over the No. 1 seed New Jersey 5s at the Vulcan MLP Playoffs Orlando, held at the USTA National Campus. Their journey to the Championship included an impressive Semifinal series win against the No. 2 seed St. Louis Shock.

“It was so special growing up in Dallas and now representing Dallas Flash and winning the championship,” said Molthan. “Dallas is such a great sports town, and there has been a drought in Championships. I am glad the team was able to do it for Dallas and all of the beloved Flash Mob Fans.”

The players of the Dallas Flash team were initially drafted from a long list of players from across the country, much like any major pro league team. Once the draft was complete, the team met each other for a four-day team retreat, all living in the same house as they practiced and bonded as a team lakeside in the back of the retreat house’s back yard, with one single pickleball court.

A few months later, the team took the court for the first time, representing the DFW Metroplex at the Major League Pickleball Event site in Atlanta in May 2024. After playing teams from across the nation at eight different event sites last Fall, the Dallas Flash made the playoffs for the League’s inaugural season as the number 3 team seed in the playoffs. The Dallas Flash battled through three rounds of playoffs this past November

and ended by bringing the Major League Pickleball national championship trophy home to Dallas.

Jorja Johnson, the second youngest player in the league, attributes her success to her mother, who is a very active supporter of Johnson and the entire team. “My mom is a rock and helps me navigate the profession of pickleball and the world, said Johnson. “She is definitely essential to my success.”

The Major League Pickleball consists of 24 teams across the country. Each team showcases their unique co-ed teams of four, which are made up of two men and two women, respectively. The league’s mission is to inspire and connect the world through Pickleball by creating the most exciting, entertaining, and inclusive Pro Pickleball play format that elevates every level of the game for players and fans alike.

The Dallas Flash inspires fans with its cohesive teamwork, unwavering resilience, and dedication to growing pickleball. Their strength comes from the bonds of their players and the trust and belief that they have in each other.

“It was really amazing watching the team evolve throughout the year,” said Molthan. “We drafted JW and Jorga as one of the best mixed teams in the country, Tyra was one of the best up and coming youth players in the nation, and we drafted Angie as a reference that really developed fast as an up and coming player to watch, and he peaked at just the right time. They bonded quickly, and we stayed in one place in AirBNB’s as a team each weekend we competed throughout the country. The mid-season campout in Boca Raton solidified their bond as a team.”

The Dallas Flash just announced their 2025 schedule in January. Fans can support them in person or via a live stream of their tournaments. To join in the fanfare, follow and cheer on your Dallas Flash Professional Pickleball team by visiting www.dallasflashpb.com and following the team and their 2025 season on Instagram at @dallasflashpb. The Dallas Flash is also looking for corporate sponsors for their season and for when they host the League’s scheduled weekend in July 2025. Choosing the RIGHT Pickleball Paddle

With pickleball taking the world by storm, choosing the right paddle can make a huge difference in your game. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned player, finding the perfect paddle comes down to understanding your playing style, preferences, and a few technical details. Let’s break it down so you can hit the court with confidence.

TOP-SELLING PICKLEBALL PADDLES ON THE MARKET RIGHT NOW:

• Selkirk AMPED S2: Known for its power and control, this paddle is a favorite among intermediate and advanced players.

• Paddletek Tempest Wave Pro: Loved for its precision and lightweight feel, it’s perfect for players who value finesse.

• JOOLA Ben Johns Hyperion CFS 16: Designed in collaboration with a top pro, this paddle combines cuttingedge technology with premium performance.

• Onix Z5 Graphite: A versatile and affordable option, ideal for beginners and recreational players.

• Engage Encore MX 6.0: Balancing power and spin, this paddle is great for players looking to step up their game.

KEY FACTORS IN CHOOSING A PADDLE

When shopping for a pickleball paddle, consider these important factors:

• Weight: Paddles typically range from 6 to 14 ounces. Lighter paddles (6-8 oz) are easier to maneuver and great for control, while heavier paddles (8-14 oz) offer more power but can strain your arm over time. Find a balance that feels comfortable.

• Material: Common paddle materials include wood, composite, and graphite. Wood paddles are affordable but heavy, while composite and graphite paddles are lighter and offer better performance. Composite paddles are versatile, and graphite paddles are prized for precision.

• Grip Size: The right grip size ensures comfort and prevents injury. Small grips allow for more wrist action and spin, while larger grips provide stability and reduce wrist fatigue. Test a few sizes to find your fit.

• Core: Paddles have different core materials like polymer, aluminum, or Nomex. Polymer cores are soft and quiet, aluminum cores are lightweight and precise, and Nomex cores are firm and powerful.

• Shape: Standard, elongated, or wide-body paddles each cater to different playing styles. Elongated paddles give extra reach, while wide-body paddles provide a larger sweet spot.

By focusing on these factors, you can find a paddle that suits your style and helps you play your best. Test a few paddles if possible, and remember: the best paddle for you is the one that feels right in your hand. See you on the court!

PICKLEBALL’S Inspirational Hero A Pickleball Champion Redefining Greatness!

Meet Taylor Nichols, Chicken N Pickle’s National Adaptive Pickleball Coordinator, and our DFW Health and Fitness Inspirational Hero of the Month. Taylor is the first ever triple crown USA Adaptive Pickleball National Champion, winning USA Pickleball’s 2024 Wheelchair Singles Championship, Wheelchair Doubles Championship, and Wheelchair Hybrid Championship (one wheelchair and one standing athlete) at the 2024 USA Pickleball National Championships, held recently in Mesa AZ.

Taylor has been deeply rooted in competitive sports at a young age and grew up racing professional motocross until a severe accident and crash seven years ago landed him in a wheelchair after broken bones entered his spinal cord- leaving him paralyzed from a Spinal Cord Injury.

After healing from the accident, Taylor found new ways to stay competitive and healthy, competing in the USA Wheelchair Football League, and proudly winning the Superbowl of the USA Wheelchair Football League with the Dallas Cowboys Wheelchair Football Team.

“I am a competitive athlete by nature, and you can’t take that away from a competitor. An athlete is an athlete,” Taylor said. “I also participated in wheelchair basketball and wheelchair softball before embracing the sport of pickleball.”

Taylor’s passion for pickleball and competitive adaptive sports led him to the Chicken N Pickleball franchise. Taylor said he liked the inclusive spirit of Chicken N Pickle and their commitment to impacting ALL communitiesincluding the Adaptive sports/ physically disabled community.

Taylor has truly become an advocate not only for the sport of pickleball but for the entire disabled community. Taylor met with the president of Chicken N Pickle and his tenacity and enthusiasm for the Adaptive community convinced the president to turn his local DFW Adaptive pickleball initiative into a nationwide corporate priority.

“Chicken N Pickle is all about community, and they proved that by providing wheelchairs and mobility devices to their adaptive sports visitors that are part of the program,” said Taylor. “Each wheelchair and mobility device costs thousands of dollars, and Chicken N Pickle not only provides those in all three DFW locations, they have now expanded the Adaptive program providing sports wheelchairs, pickleball courts, and pickleball equipment to ALL 11 Chicken N Pickle locations nationwide.”

Taylor says it’s truly a community effort, as area businesses are now helping support and sponsoring the Adaptive Pickleball Program along with the Chicken N Pickle Foundation.

“I am very active in my community and I use my social media platforms to become a brand ambassador for the sport of Adaptive pickleball,” says Taylor. “I want to show others that I can defy the odds and show how the Disabled community can still live a fulfilling life. I want to bridge the gap between the general population and those with disabilities.”

Many professional tournaments nationwide are now including an adaptive wheelchair division or component in their weekend tournament schedules. The Professional Pickleball Tour and the Association of Pickleball Players are two national pickleball tournaments and event organizers that are embracing the adaptive pickleball community.

“I am excited that these and other tournament directors are including adaptive pickleball and I’d also like to see a US or World adaptive pickleball tour soon,” said Taylor. “I also hope that soon the Olympics will include pickleball as an official sporting event, therefore paving the way for Paralympic Adaptive Pickleball. It is my dream to compete and win a Paralympic Gold Metal in the sport of Adaptive Pickleball.”

All three Chicken N Pickle DFW locations have dedicated dates, times, courts, and wheelchairs available for anyone in the

adaptive community who wants to get out of the house, play socially, mingle among likeminded players, or even take it to the next level to train as a serious adaptive wheelchair pickleball competitor.

Taylor leads this national programming at Chicken N Pickle and says at any given class there are 8-16 adaptive players in attendance. The program at Grand Prairie is held every 2nd and 4th Monday from 6-8 pm. Taylor also leads the Adaptive pickleball programs at the Chicken N Pickle in Grapevine (1st & 3rd Mondays, 6-8 pm) and soon he will also lead programming at the Allen location once Chicken N Pickle opens there.

Chicken N Pickle recently hosted the 2024 Adaptive Pickleball Tournament at their Grand Prairie location which was organized by Taylor. The event, sponsored by Per4Max wheelchairs, included round-robin play, with close to 25 participants. Taylor will be representing DFW and the Chicken N Pickle at the upcoming USA Open Pickleball Championships in Naples, Florida in April.

Taylor prides himself on staying competitive and healthy. He participates in functional fitness training to keep his bones healthy and keeps up with daily healthy meal planning. He also participates in physical therapy where he walks with a walker.

“The doctors said I would never walk again, but I am determined to prove them wrong,” said Taylor. “In the end, I want to better the world and leave it in a better place, and I want to help people find the best versions of themselves, instilling confidence in others to stay physically active.”

For more information on Chicken N Pickle’s DFW Adaptive Pickleball Program, contact Taylor Nichols at tnichols@ chickennpickle.com or visit chickennpickle.com.

If you or your business would like to support and/or sponsor those living with physical disabilities and the Adaptive Pickleball initiative please contact tnichols@chickennpickle.com.
