RETROSPECTIVE First Encounter V1 Cork City 4-2 Dundalk October 9th, 1938 Cork City FC replaced Cork FC to play in the League of Ireland between 19381940. They subsequently were replaced by Cork United. The first match between this incarnation of “City” and Dundalk was in the Shield at the Mardyke Sports Ground. City took the lead after 20 minutes when Miller scored from the penalty spot after a handball. Dundalk should have levelled within a few minutes when Joey Donnelly played “Lightning” Brown straight through on goal, but he shot wide of Foley’s goal. Connolly made it 2-0 to the hosts with a header before Murphy made it 3-0. Donnelly scored from a direct free kick from 25 yards to reduce the deficit. Davis scored a breakaway

1990s Classic Dundalk 3-0 Cork City 22nd September 1991 Both sides returned to domestic action a few days after representing the League of Ireland with distinction. Dundalk had travelled to Hungary to play Honved in the European Cup and returned with a 1-1 draw. Cork City had managed to hold the mighty Bayern Munich to a similar scoreline at Musgrave Park. The match in Oriel Park was played in the midst of a swirling breeze that did it’s best to interrupt the flow of the match. Dundalk took the lead in the 16th minute when Brian Irwin produced a fine defence splitting pass that set up Tom McNulty to score from an acute angle. The second arrived four minutes later. Irwin was instrumental again making a great run down the right and pulling the ball back to Terry Eviston who hit a magnificent wind-assisted 25 yard shot past Phil Harrington. The conditions played their part in the third Dundalk goal just before the break that completed the scoring for the day. Dundalk won a free-kick on the left and Mick Shelley spotted that Harrington was off his line and was able to float the ball over his head as he struggled to recover his position.
