t was a really important win in Cork on Tuesday night but it was also a very good performance, especially from a technical point of view.

The quality of our possession was really good. It wasn’t easy to find an opening against a team who were organised and who defended with a block in the middle third. We didn’t lose our composure, we kept on playing and kept possession.

We were calm and composed

which is what Im looking for. I think we dominated the game and we deserved to win it.

At half-time, I told the players that we just had to keep things going. In the first half, we did really well and we just had to trust in what we were doing.

We knew an opportunity would come and it did.

It was a good night for Patrick Hoban. People must remember that the game in Cork was the first league game he has played for me since I came to the club.

He is doing well, he is fit and he is looking sharp. We also have David McMillan looking very fit and sharp as well so we have two great number nines to alternate in the next month ahead.

We also kept another clean sheet which I was very happy with. As a team, we always want to be organised defensively. It’s something we work on a lot during the week.

The players understand the collaboration and organisation we want at the back. Being organised is one of the priorities of our style of play.

We have some players still to come back into the squad like Darragh Leahy, Sean Hore and John Mountney. We are really careful with all of the players if they feel any soreness or pain. The roster is scientifically managed. We did that in the past with the Finn Harps game where we rotated after the Europa League.

We were criticised by some people who thought we made too many changes but this is what you have to do if you want to compete in every competition. We had many good performances in Cork and I think all of the players now are at the level we need them to play all of the games that we have in October.

Finally, I’m really looking forward to tonight’s game against Bohemians. They are a great team and we want to see where we are at. Both teams will try and win the game - and that is important. May the best team win.

I

t has been a superb season for Bohemians thus far and as we hit the home stretch in a disrupted season, they sit in second place in the table.

defeated on penalty kicks in the first qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League.

The match against Cork last week ended with a 3-0 win for Keith Long’s men and it secured European football for the second successive season for the men of Dalymount Park and they have that to look forward to next summer.

Before the forced break due to the pandemic, Bohemians were in good form winning three of their first five matches and have maintained that form since the resumption losing just two of their eleven matches up to this point.

They aren’t finished yet in this truncated season and have their sights firmly set on leaders Shamrock Rovers and are currently five points behind the Hoops with three matches remaining and that is their aim as they come to Oriel tonight. Bohs haven’t won at Oriel in almost three years, October 2017 was the last time they had a victory here however they have been victorious in the last two meetings which took place at Dalymount on the scoreline of 2-1 and they will be hoping to repeat the trick tonight as they aim to make it five wins from their last five matches.

The Gypsies have a number of exciting young players at their disposal with Danny Grant one of the most promising in the league and earned a call up to the Ireland U21’s for their clash with Italy earlier this week and he netted one of the goals of the season last week against Cork City with a wonderful lob.

It was also this side’s first taste of European football and the first for Bohemians since 2012 and they were drawn away to Mol Fehervar of Hungary however despite an impressive display, they were 11

KEITH LONG (DOB: 14/11/1973)

The longest serving manager in the league, Keith Long has earned himself the reputation as one of the best manager’s in Ireland and that has been proven to date with his work at Bohemians.

As a player, Long was with Stoke City in England for three years however failed to make a first team appearance and returned home to play for Dundalk actually and was a league title winner in 1995 before departing for Brian Kerr’s St. Patrick’s Athletic where he lifted another league trophy.

After four years with the Saints, he moved on to Bray Wanderers where he was an ever present

and retired in 2005 to begin coaching.

A spell as assistant manager and manager of Bray followed before his next managerial role at Athlone Town in 2014 and he came agonizingly close to keeping the midlanders in the division.

This performance was enough for Bohemians to spot his talent and they appointed him manager at Dalymount Park in late 2014 and it has been a superb spell to date with progression steady year on year with he last two seasons culminating in finishes in the European places.

CORK CITY 0-2 DUNDALK FC

Two Patrick Hoban goals in the space of just two minutes propelled Dundalk into third place in the SSE Airtricity League table as the Lilywhites overcame a Cork City that looks destined for the drop at Turner’s Cross on Tuesday night.

After being frustrated for 73 minutes, Dundalk made the vital breakthrough when Hoban swept home from close range after a mistake in the Cork City six-yard box and the striker took his tally to nine for the season - and 103 for the club - just two minutes later when he buried an inviting Sean Gannon cross to

seal a vitally important win.

The result lifts Filippo Giovagnoli’s men into the European places - one point ahead of fourth-placed Waterford - with two games in hand and is the perfect start to a busy period which will see us play two more league games, starting with Bohs this evening before the Europa League Group B opener against Molde on Thursday.

Giovagnoli made seven changes to the side that drew 0-0 with Finn Harps in Dundalk’s previous outing with ⁣Cameron Dummigan, Andy Boyle, Chris Shields and Nathan 22

Oduwa the only four to retain their place in the starting XI. Sean Gannon, who picked up a nasty ankle injury in the Europa League tie with Sheriff Tiraspol in Transnistria, made a welcome return to the side and, in tandem with Oduwa, he featured prominently.

Cameron Dummigan fizzed an effort just wide of the upright with less than a minute played and that set the tempo for the remainder of the half as Dundalk penned the hosts back for large spells. Liam Bossin was relatively underworked, though, with Michael Duffy shooting wide and Patrick Hoban

heading tamely into the City goalkeeper’s hands from a Sean Murray corner.

Another well-worked move on the right involving Oduwa and Gannon almost ended with Patrick McEleney pulling the trigger but he just couldn’t find his feet and the opportunity passed.

Giovagnoli’s men upped the tempo after that and created the best move of the first half in the 34th minute. Again, it came down the right with Oduwa doing really well to dig a cross out on the byline. Duffy’s touch invited the incoming Murray to have a go but the in-form midfielder curled his effort just wide of the post.

The biggest talking point of the evening came just four minutes later. Oduwa turned on the afterburners to surge clear on the right but his cross was blocked by the outstretched arm of Alan Bennett. Incredibly, referee Neil Doyle waved the Dundalk protests away.

Gary Rogers easily dealt with Cian Coleman’s 40th-minute effort, Cork’s first and only attempt of the half, and the sides went in deadlocked at the break when Gannon saw his drive go across the face of goal and wide after the ball came back off a defender.

The second half opened in much the same fashion as the first and Hoban was unlucky to see the ball cannon off his shin and fly over the top after Duffy had cut in from the left and drilled an effort goalwards that Bossin could only parry.

The Lilywhites hitman was left frustrated again shortly after when Doyle waved away his shout for a penalty but his moment arrived with 17 minutes on the clock when Dummigan’s lofted cross caused havoc for Bossin and Hoban was there to gobble up the loose ball and smash the ball home.

That knocked the stuffing out of the hosts, who saw Gary Rogers frustrate Dylan McGlade

with a stunning save on the hour mark, and the three points were banked with 15 minutes to play when Hoban darted to the near post to hammer home an inch-perfect Gannon cross after a sumptuous pass from Chris Shields set the full-back away on the right.

F

irst and foremost we got the victory in Cork on Tuesday night but speaking personally, it was my second start in a row, which was good. I’ve been working hard and we have a good group of players here.

Everyone is fighting for a place and the competition is healthy.

The game at Turner’s Cross was similar to the previous one with Finn Harps. Cork worked very hard off the ball and they restricted space but they got a bit tired in the second half and we were able to open them up and we didn’t force it as much as we did against Finn Harps.

Once we got the first goal, the second one came almost straight after because Cork had to come out a bit more. That left the space open for us. Patience was the key. We’re a team that likes to keep the ball and to try and find the space in behind.

We ended with the win and

that was the most important thing. We’ve been training well recently and we just want to keep the momentum going now against Bohemians.

I started on the right against Cork. I don’t really mind where I’m playing, as long as I’m on the pitch! I can operate on the left, on the right and through the middle and I thought myself and Sean Gannon played really well and we had a good understanding with each other..

We’re going into a really busy schedule now but as a player, I just want to play as much as possible. We have three European games coming up that are back to back and in between those we have some league and cup games but we have a big squad and we’ll be able to cope. Before I came here I hadn’t played much football so the busy schedule is actually good for me because it consistently gets some minutes into my legs.

I think our supporters are beginning to see the best of not just me, but the team as a whole. You can see what Filippo has done with us and what way he wants us to play and the way he wants us to try and control games. Even off the ball, I’ve been impressed with the way we’ve started to press. Even if teams beat our press we have got back into shape and tried to recover the ball as quickly as possible.

We’re in third place at the moment with a couple of games in hand but we just need to take it game by game, starting with Bohemians this evening. They’ve been having a good season.

You don’t sit in second place for that long through luck; they’ve really earned it and they’ll come up here and attack us. They’re a good team but we’re also a good team and it might suit us better because we like it when the game is a bit more open.

EUROPA LEAGUE SQUAD Jordan Flores

We have submitted our squad to UEFA for the upcoming Europa League group stage campaign which gets underway against Molde FK at Tallaght Stadium on October 22nd.

Filippo Giovagnoli’s 23-man panel includes midfielder Jordan Flores, who played no part in the qualifying rounds against Inter Club Escaldes, Sheriff Tiraspol and KI Klaksvik, but Will Patching and Josh Gatt both miss out, as does the injured Dane Massey.

“When I arrived, Jordan was coming back from an injury and little by little he has been getting his form back,” explained Giovagnoli.

“He is a good player and he has different characteristics to the midfielders I have. He has been doing really good in practice and I have made my decisions based on what has been happening on the field.”

Teenager Jamie Wynne, who was part of the squad for the trip to Moldova and the playoff win over KI, is named on List B which includes players born on or after January 1st, 1998 who have been eligible to play for the club for an uninterrupted period of two years after their 15th birthday.

UEFA rules state that a club can register an unlimited number of players on List B during the season but the list must be submitted no later than midnight the day before a match.

“There are a couple of rules that didn’t help us but players are professional and have to accept the decisions,” said Giovagnoli. “I have to bring 22 players and the 22 players I picked are the ones who I think are the best options for the club.”

Five substitutions will be permitted in each Europa League game this season, which means an extended 23-matchday squad can be named.

MARK ROSSITER to name a few. At the end of the 2011 season, he left for St. Patrick’s Athletic however this season was blighted by injury and his season was ended in May due to a knee problem.

After a few months out, he signed for Stephen Kenny at Dundalk after a short trial and was named vice captain to Stephen O’Donnell and was a key member of the side which finished runners up to St. Patrick’s Athletic. The defender renewed his contract for the 2014 season and his experience proved vital as he helped the Lilywhites win the

ark Rossiter is one of the good guys of Irish football and of course he did play for both Dundalk and Bohemians. It almost didn’t seem like he would though because of two cruciate injuries which appeared to end his career however he went on to have a remarkable career.

After spending time at Sunderland and making ten first team appearances, ‘Rossi’ came home to Finn Harps and then linked up with Sean Connor at Bohemians after the manager persuaded him to come out of retirement in 2007. This started a four year spell with the Gypsies where he would win all domestic honours – 2 leagues, an FAI Cup, a League Cup and Setanta Sports Cup. He was also part of the side which claimed the ‘Double’ in 2008.

League Cup, their first senior trophy for 12 years, and ended their 19 wait for a league title with a thrilling final day win against Cork City.

At the end of the campaign, he moved on to Longford Town and spent two seasons in the midlands which proved to be the final act of a hugely successful career at the age of 33. And with three league medals, an FAI Cup, two league cups and a Setanta Sports Cup, it wasn’t a bad haul for a man who retired twice with knee injuries.

he draw for this season’s Europa League has consolidated the competition’s newfound status as offering the equivalent excitement of what was, when I was a lad, everything about FA Cup third round time across the water. A stage where minnows rub shoulders with elite clubs as equals only this time, there are six days in the sun.

This competition has unquestionably profited from the other-worldly finances of the Champions League, where you could pretty much sketch out now the quarter-finalists who will still be in with a shot at making Istanbul in April (like everything else, COVIDpermitting) and you would likely get six out of eight right.

None of the Pot 4 clubs at the Nyon draw for the Europa League will be making the Champions League knockout rounds anytime soon but for the majority of the 48 clubs represented in that ceremony, the Group Stage provides new experiences to explore and footballing cultures to embrace and enjoy.

Of the seven clubs with lower co-efficients than Dundalk FC, four of them will line-up against former European champions over the next few months.

There is plenty of excitement in the country about this competition with Gdansk’s hosting of the final deferred to this season, just five years after Warsaw had witnessed a thrilling conclusion to the competition as Sevilla edged out Dnipro of Ukraine by the odd goal in five. Lech’s final may already happen in the autumn as Benfica are stablemates along with Rangers and Standard Liège.

BOHS ‘AT HOME’ IN ORIEL

or the majority of their visits to Oriel Park, Bohemians have always been the official ‘away’ team but on a couple of occasions, Bohs have actually been the home side. Intrigued?

1977: East meets west Back in 1977, Bohemians played Newcastle Utd in the old UEFA Cup competition at Dalymount Park. The Gypsies recorded a very credible 0-0 draw but the game was marred by crowd trouble, particularly during the half time interval which meant there was a lengthy delay to the second half kicking off.

UEFA subsequently imposed a three-year ban on Bohs playing their home European ties at Dalymount and dictated that any of their games in European competition should not take place within a 100-mile radius of their Dublin home.

After winning the League of Ireland title in 1978, Bohs entered the European Cup where they were drawn against Omonia Nicosia of Cyprus.

Because of the UEFA ban, the ‘home tie’ was played at Flower Lodge in Cork. It proved to be a disaster for Bohs and with very few people coming through the gate, they lost a lot of money.

To try to avoid another lossmaking tie, they appealed the original ban and the sentence was reduced whereby the club could now play their European games outside a 50 miles radius of Dublin, which consequently brought Oriel Park into play.

Despite the lack of

supporters, Bohemians still had enough about them to beat the Cypriots and progress to the second round of the European Cup. Their reward, if you could call it that, was a showdown with the three-in-a-row East German champions, Dynamo Dresden, with the ‘home tie’ pencilled in for Oriel Park on October 18th, 1978.

Ballymascanlon Hotel during their visit but the Iron Curtain that divided Europe between east and west meant that there were no Dresden fans in attendance.

The Dundalk Democrat reported that the visitors were extremely complimentary of the Oriel Park surface and the groundsman, Mickey Fox, was singled out for special praise. A crowd of 2,000 were

in attendance for the match, meaning that another financial fiasco like the first-round game in Flower Lodge had been avoided!

While the East Germans were heavy favourites to win the game, Bohemians held firm to record a well deserved 0-0 draw with a line out that consisted of Mick Smyth in goal, a defence made up of Austin Brady, Joe Burke, Eamonn Gregg, John ‘The Count’ McCormack and Padraig O’Connor.

The midfield and forward line consisted of Tommy Kelly, Gino Lawless, Terry Eviston, Paddy Joyce and Turlough O’Connor. While Turlie had already been a Dundalk player between 1968 and 1972, Gregg, Lawless, Eviston and Joyce - as well as substitutes Joey Malone and Mick Shelley - would go on to have distinguished careers with the Lilywhites!

Despite holding Dresden scoreless in Oriel, Bohemians could not prevent the East Germans scoring six at the Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion two weeks later in front of an estimated 33,000 fans, and they exited the competition on a 6-0 aggregate scoreline.

While the first game and the second replay were played at Tolka Park, the first replay between the sides took place at Oriel on Wednesday, April 6th 1983.

A reported crowd of 1,500 fans travelled from Drogheda but even though the Boynesiders dominated the game, they failed to take their chances and they were made to rue those missed chances in the second replay a week later when a Jackie Jameson hattrick sealed a 3-0 win for the

Pat Hoban's double against Cork City takes him to nine goals for the 2020 season.

Ironically Dundalk’s number nine scored his ninth goal of the season against a side which has nine points this season. It’s also nine months.

This will be Hoban’s ninth game since he last faced Bohs, at Dalymount Park, on August 7th. Of the eight games, four have been European fixtures, three were Premier Division games and Waterford were beaten in the FAI Cup. Of the last nine competitive goals Dundalk have scored against Bohemians, Patrick Hoban has scored five. Four of these came in the 6-1 League Cup defeat last season, with the other a late penalty to 2019_14_Qarabag_60_p.indd 41 snatch victory in the league earlier in the 2019 season.

Cork City goalkeeper Mark McNulty turned 40 last Tuesday, however, due to injury, he couldn’t take his place in the matchday squad.

Instead, former Republic of Ireland Under 21 goalkeeper Liam Bossin took his place between the posts. The netminder became the third different Cork City netminder to face Dundalk in the past two seasons as Tadhg Ryancurrently at Waterford - was in goal for the Leesiders in the

post title winning fixture at the end of the 2019 season.

On the bench for Cork on Tuesday night was David Harrington, a son of Welshman Phil 'Biscuits' Harrington who was part of the Cork City squad who lost the 2005 FAI Cup Final to Drogheda United.

On the opposite bench was Gary Rogers, who started for Dundalk on Tuesday night. Neither Harrington nor Rogers featured in the game, 19/07/2019 however Harrington did feature in Europe for the club that season- aged 41.

elcome to tonight’s almost-topof-the-table clash between second and third in the league as Dundalk look to close the gap on Bohemians.

In different circumstances, there could be a modicum of conflict in the minds of the Dundalk faithful tonight, what with defeat for Bohemians effectively handing the league title to South Dublin County Council’s favourite tenants. But that ship has sailed.

The Hooped Minions of Beelzebub have their half-title in the bag regardless, indeed it’s been a couple of games since they disappeared over the mathematical horizon as far as Dundalk are concerned.

Bohs put up a spirited fight but, much as it pains all of tonight’s participants to admit it, Rovers have been a class apart this

third in 2019 was a stinker of a draw away to Hungarian side Fehevar. Bohs played brilliantly but lost out on penalties. If we make it next season Dundalk will - hopefully - avoid an away draw, and seeding will keep the Lilywhites away from the bigger guns for the first couple of rounds.

Nonetheless, the standard Europa League route, or Europa Conference route - or whatever branding is attached to the third tier European competition next season - is brutal and group stage qualification is a pipe

dream.

Whatever about Europe, next season’s League of Ireland whatever bastardised, diseaseriddled format that might take - is potentially set up to be a cracker. Dundalk, one would hope, will contend again, while Bohemians’ steady progress under Keith Long and Trevor Croly has edged them closer and closer to a title challenge.

Then there’s the small matter of our mutual nemesis: the asterisk-champions in waiting.

There hasn’t really been a significant season-long battle 45

royal for the title since the unforgettable Dundalk-Cork tete-a-tete in 2014.

Since then, Dundalk cruised to the title in 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019 and temporary usurpers Cork and Rovers eased to victory in 2017 and 2020. The prospect of a genuine threeway battle in 2021 might give us all something to look forward to. Who knows, we might even be allowed in to watch it.
