VOUTSOS BROTHERS

After graduating from Notre Dame in 2014, Tom served as a commissioned officer in the Marine Corps until 2018. He then worked with a social impact startup until he used his GI Bill to attend the University of Chicago to earn his MBA.

Tom explained, “When I entered UC in the fall of 2021, I wanted to explore alternative pathways to home ownership that were more accessible to the working class. However, there isn’t a method to convert renters into homeowners in our working class neighborhoods. So, I put together a student team and started LadderUp Housing in Toledo, Ohio, to solve this problem. By the end of 2021, we had purchased and renovated our first homes under budget. We spent 2022 learning more, refining our approach as landlords, and observing the financial coaching process that would lead our renters to become homeowners. We acquired nine additional properties in December and have completed renovations on six of them. Our goal this year is to acquire an additional 50 properties in Toledo and run pilots in two new Ohio cities.”

Greg graduated from the University of Michigan in 2015 and immediately began work as a management consultant in Chicago. During this time, he gained a wide range of knowledge and experience in operations and process improvement. These attributes were a big plus when, in 2022, Greg made the decision to join LadderUp as Head of Operations and Customer Success.

These young men are committed to their dual purpose of running a “for profit” company while they are serving their community with education and the future of home ownership. Both Tom and Greg have come to understand that the concept of “vocation” has spilled into their work lives.

The students love hearing real-world examples of the things we are learning in class and hearing others’ stories that may help them find their passion one day. Spotlighting Alumni & Members of Our CC Family

Eric Sabree ‘72: Rooted in Detroit, Loyal to Catholic Central

When Eric Sabree (Humphries) ’72 entered Detroit Catholic Central High School as a young student, he had no idea how much the school would shape his life. Today, as the Wayne County Treasurer, Sabree is a true leader in his community, rooted in Detroit and fiercely loyal to his alma mater.

Looking back on his time at CC, Sabree remembers being inspired by the school’s motto, a philosophy that was instilled in him by influential figures at the school, such as Coach Rod, who taught him discipline on the wrestling mat, and Fr. Enright, CSB, who encouraged him to dig deeper in his faith search.

“‘Teach me Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge’ is a great motto, and I have shared it with many people whom I have worked with over the years,” said Sabree. “That’s something I remember most when I think about the Basilians and teachers at Catholic Central–they demanded excellence from the students, and they wanted us to have fun while we did it,” he said.

TEACH ME GOODNESS

Sabree lives out the principle of Goodness, cultivating faith, compassion, and honor through his personal faith journey, his work as Wayne County Treasurer, and his involvement in Kiwanis.

Sabree’s faith journey started at CC, serving as an altar boy at Mass and encouraged by Fr. Enright to dive into religious studies after his curiosity was peaked while reading the autobiography of Malcom X in Fr. Enright’s English class. Later in life, Sabree had the opportunity to spend a day with Muhammad Ali while on a campaign against drug usage in schools.

“At the end of the day, we were back at the hotel, and I had the chance to ask him about religion,” recalled Sabree. “His response was really interesting. He said, ‘Brother, let me tell you, you should believe in whatever you would believe on an island by yourself, with only you and God.

If you believe in something because of what other people say, then you will be disappointed every time.’ That’s always stuck with me,” said Sabree.

For Sabree, Islam offered him that peace. He converted to the faith, changing his name to Sabree, a family name he says goes back centuries and translates to patience and perseverance.

Sabree exercises the meaning of his namesake on a daily basis through his work as Wayne County Treasurer. Creating affordable payment structures for Wayne County residents, Sabree has helped countless residents keep their homes and stay in their communities. It is a testament to his deep-rooted belief in serving the people of Detroit and Wayne County.

“I try to practice goodness in my daily work,” said Sabree. “I work with people all the time who are having trouble paying their taxes. They might be dealing with some mental or physical illness and just being good to them and trying your best to help is important. But just being good is not good enough. You have to have discipline and knowledge as well because people will try to take advantage of you,” he said.

Sabree’s pursuit of Goodness also extends to his 30-year involvement in Kiwanis, a chapter-based organization founded in Detroit in 1915, serving the needs of children in their communities on a global level. Sabree first became involved with Kiwanis from his father, a past president of the organization.

“I really liked going to meetings with him and getting involved,” said Sabree. “I really enjoyed it, especially the books for kids programs where we give around 100,000 books to kids every year.”

Sabree was honored to be president of the founding Kiwanis Club in 2015, hosting clubs spread across 60 nations in Detroit for their centennial celebration.

“What an amazing opportunity to meet people from all over the world,” said Sabree. Sabree continues to serve on the organization’s Foundation Board, where he and other members seek to raise money for the young people of Detroit.

TEACH ME DISCIPLINE

Discipline is also a key component of Sabree’s life. He learned this valuable trait during his time at CC through athletics, and he continues to live it out today. He still hits the weights, maintaining his physical fitness, and his disciplined mindset is evident in his work as Wayne County Treasurer.

“I’ll never forget going to a wrestling meet and Coach Rod could tell some of the wrestlers were acting lackadaisical and not giving their best effort,” recalled Sabree. “Well, the next day at practice was like torture, and I learned, don’t ever give less than 100% or you will pay for it in the long run. Here I am still thinking about that life lesson 50 years later – never give less than 100%, or it will cost you,” he said. Sabree also emphasized the importance of leaning on God in times of trial. “Sometimes it’s frustrating because you can’t do everything you want to do,” said Sabree. “There has been plenty of failure in my life, but failure is not a bad thing. It just helps you become stronger and smarter so that you can succeed later. We have to realize that God is going to test us. He is going to test us not to destroy us, but to make us stronger.”

Sabree equated the discipline needed to continue forward to his time on the wrestling mat. “Just like in wrestling, you have to pick yourself back up, see that there’s still time on the clock, and realize you still have a shot to be successful,” said Sabree. “We can apply that to life too, we still woke up this morning, we’re breathing, we still have a shot,” he said.

TEACH ME KNOWLEDGE

Finally, Knowledge is a value that Sabree has sought relentlessly throughout his life. He learned this through the Basilian Fathers at CC, who encouraged him to pursue a mindset of continual growth and learning. Sabree has taken this advice to heart and has continued to seek out knowledge throughout his career, starting during his time at CC where he would take night classes at Cass Tech to learn plumbing.

Graduating from Michigan State University, Sabree acquired his plumbing license and worked as a plumber before transitioning to a non-profit development housing company, which eventually led him to becoming a supervisor in the building department for the City of Detroit. Fifteen years out from undergrad, Sabree pivoted and returned to the classroom to study law. After law school, Sabree worked for Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer as an appointee in the Housing Commission, trying to renovate public housing and reduce vacancies. He then moved to the Planning and Development Department as Deputy Director, and then later Director, still under Mayor Archer.

Sabree spent three years in private law practice before transitioning to Wayne County, where he worked in the Corporation Council as Chief of the Real Estate Division for six years. When a deputy position opened up in the Wayne County Treasurer Office, Sabree was offered the position. He worked as a deputy for five years, becoming the treasurer in 2016.

Reflecting on his 40-year career journey and his work serving the people of Wayne County, Sabree recalled the rewarding mission of his work.

“People have approached me later, thanking me for helping them get on a plan that allowed them to keep their home and those are the moments that matter,” said Sabree. “I have been blessed to have been in the position to help.”

SHAMROCK LEADER

As a true CC alumnus, Sabree is deeply loyal to his alma mater. He is a frequent visitor to the school, attending class reunions and recently speaking to current students. He also gives back to the school, supporting the mission of Catholic Central and helping to ensure that future generations of students have the same opportunities he did.

“CC prepares its students to be leaders,” said Sabree. “I didn’t realize it at the time, but I met so many people who went to Catholic Central who are leaders today,” he said.

As Sabree continues to lead in his community, he does so with the values of Catholic Central firmly in mind. Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge are guiding principles that have served him well throughout his life, and he is proud to represent them in all that he does.

Sabree’s commitment to Basilian virtues is a testament to the transformative power of a Catholic Central education, and his story is a reminder of the important role that Catholic Central plays in not only shaping the leaders of tomorrow, but spreading Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge through their legacies for future generations to come.

Alumni Association Mission Statement

The mission of the Catholic Central Alumni Association is to provide services, benefits, and activities of interest to the alumni, to foster an alumni body which is interested and involved in the affairs and functions of the school, and to provide such assistance to the school as may from time to time be requested of it.

MARY, ALMA MATER

Mary, Alma Mater, your sons of Central honor, and trusting in your goodness, we hopefully implore that by your grace we may every day prove that we are men of Mary, Alma Mater. Inspire us evermore.

Mary, Alma Mater, your sons of Central honor, and proudly wear your colors, the Royal Blue and White. May valiant Blue and peerless White teach us to be men of Mary, Alma Mater. Inspire us evermore.

Fellow Alumni and CC Family,

This is my last letter to you, as my term has ended as President of the Alumni Association Board of Directors. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed serving as the Alumni Board President and have received much more than I put in. In that vein, I want to encourage all of you to get involved in volunteer service. It can be your local church, school, food bank, etc. Of course, CC has many opportunities for you to get involved, helping these young men grow. No matter what you choose, I guarantee you will feel enriched and will be glad you took some time to help others.

I am happy to report that the school continues to thrive. We just completed another historic Raffle Ticket DRIVE, the proceeds from which are essential in providing tuition assistance. Furthermore, as of March 2023, we already have 92% of next years’ incoming class admitted with deposits paid–this is WAY ahead of schedule. The STEM addition is proceeding nicely, despite some weather setbacks. Most importantly, the young men of CC continue to excel in their development academically and as men of Catholic Central.

I also encourage you to give consideration to participating in alumni activities like the Alumni Basketball or Softball Leagues, and to attend alumni and school events such as the annual alumni dinner, fine arts weekend, Boys’ Bowl Weekend, and many more (See the CC Website for more information).

On March 9, the Alumni Board of Directors met and elected the following officers for a two-year term:

Bryan Genrich ’03 – President

Jimmy Burns ’04 – Vice President

Judge David Law ’87 – Treasurer

Tom Nugent ’78 – Secretary

The Alumni Board of Directors is in good hands with this excellent executive committee.

Thank you to those who have paused to read my letters – I appreciate you. Be well, be thankful, be happy, and remember – It’s always a GREAT day to be a Shamrock!

CC Spirit Alive and Well in Sunny Florida

The CC Spirit was alive and well at the 2023 Florida Reunion on March 18. The atmosphere, weather, CC camaraderie, food, and hospitality of the Sharky’s on the Pier staff and Pachota Family was top notch at our annual gathering in sunny Florida!

Every March, over 110 Shamrock alumni and guests unite in beautiful Venice, Florida, for a reunion started two decades ago by members of the Class of ’55 and hosted by Karen and Terry Brady ’55

The past several years, Donna and Mike Pachota ’71, and their son, Justin, have hosted this great gathering at their relaxing and wonderful restaurant, Sharky’s on the Pier, on Venice Beach. The event starts with some casual socializing, followed by Mass or prayer service, an update on CC, a fantastic lunch, and a heavy dose of CC camaraderie.

All CC alumni, family, and friends are welcome. See you on March 16, 2024, for next year’s reunion!

Additionally, class members and guests from the Classes of 1959 and 1960 had separate informal gatherings while in Florida. Thank you to Greg Schwartz ’59, and Linda and Ed Hagen ’60 for hosting their respected classmates and guests.

The Annual Fr. James Enright, CSB Alumni Hockey Game

Detroit Catholic Central welcomed home over 45 alumni CC Hockey players and their families for a fun-filled, competitive day of CC Hockey and camaraderie on Sunday, March 26, at USA Hockey Arena, the home of Catholic Central Hockey.

Players and coaches hit the ice for the annual Fr. James Enright, CSB Alumni Hockey Game, with some traveling many miles and from all parts of the country to play. As in previous years, a great day was had by all the players and family members. The day was filled with dekes, saucer passes, not tripping over the blue-line, and reminiscing about the “good old days.” CC Hockey is grateful for the enthusiasm, brotherhood, and spirited play of its alumni.

Thank you to Mike Giordano and Tom Nugent ’78 for their dedication to CC Hockey, alumni, and family members. They are great examples of the “Live and Die for CC High” spirit! cc Hockey Alumni AppreciAtion nigHt

Catholic Central welcomed home over 50 alumni hockey players for a good dose CC camaraderie and fellowship on January 21. Alumni and their families gathered at USA Arena on the Mitchel Kiefer Memorial Rink, the home of Catholic Central Hockey.

The evening began with CC’s JV White and Blue teams playing before Varsity Hockey battled the U of D Cubs. The varsity game concluded with a hard fought 3-1 victory for the Shamrocks!

Prior to the varsity game, we honored our CC Hockey alumni with an informal pre-game on-ice recognition ceremony. These CC men continue to be wonderful examples and patrons of CC, supporting the rich tradition that is Catholic Central Hockey—a program dating back to 1934. We are grateful and blessed for the presence of team members across the decades, including alumni from CC’s first state championship team in 1959!

Throughout the day and during a post-game reception, alumni, family members, current players, and coaches enjoyed hospitality, food and beverages in CJ’s Brewing Company at USA Arena.

A special thank you to Mike Giordano and Tom Nugent ’78 for their time, effort, attention to detail, and love for CC Hockey, our players, coaches, parents, and alumni. They bleed Mary, Alma Mater Blue and White, and we all are better for it! Both men are true examples of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge in action. Go Shamrocks!

President A Message from the

Dear Shamrock Community,

As we approach our 100th anniversary in just five years, I want to take this opportunity to reflect on our past achievements and discuss our plans for ensuring that the success of Detroit Catholic Central High School continues for the next 100 years.

At Catholic Central, we have always been committed to providing a world-class education to our students. We have achieved this through our dedication to our three pillars of success.

Tuition Assistance: We are committed to providing financial aid to ensure that any deserving young man can attend CC, regardless of his socio-economic status. We believe that every student should have access to the opportunities that a CC education provides.

Faculty Compensation: Our faculty and staff are the backbone of our institution, and we are committed to attracting and retaining the best possible faculty and staff for our students. We believe that providing competitive compensation and benefits packages is critical to ensuring that we have the best people working at CC.

School and Campus Development: To have the finest academic and co-curricular programs, we must continuously improve our facilities and resources. We are committed to developing our campus to provide the best possible learning and extracurricular environment for our students.

Right now, we have an incredible matching donor opportunity that will allow us to further our commitment to these pillars of success. I am humbly asking each of you to consider how you can help us take advantage of this opportunity. Choose the pillar that most resonates with you, and help us build on it.

When we gather together in support of a common mission, we are bound for great things. The world is a better place with more CC Shamrocks in it, and we need your help to pave the way for future generations to come.

Let us work together to ensure that the success of CC continues for the next 100 years.

Sincerely,

V I S I ON

24 A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT • SPRING 2023

A VISION IN THE MAKING

As we approach the historic celebration of our 100th school year in 2028, Detroit Catholic Central High School finds itself uniquely positioned to build upon our tradition of excellence in ways few other schools could dream about.

Thanks to the vision of our school leadership and the support of our beloved alumni, notably George Turek ’66, we are poised to elevate Catholic Central to new heights.

Our goal is to ensure that the mission of the Basilian Fathers - teaching young men Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge - will continue for the next 100 years. We approach this task with humility and purpose.

This edition of the Aluminator provides a sneak peek into our Vision 100 and extends an invitation to all to support us in making it a reality.

25 VISION 100 • SPRING 2023

THE3 PILLARS

1 TUITION ASSISTANCE

Where we’ve been: The Basilian Fathers believe that education is a gift from God, to be shared among all peoples regardless of social or economic standings.

Supporting this belief, CC has awarded millions of dollars in need-based assistance to families.

Where we are: Our school endowment currently sits at $18 million, and we fundraise an additional $1 million per year. We allocate approximately $1.5 million in need-based tuition assistance on an annual basis, impacting about 30% of our student body.

Where we are exploring: In order to remain accessible to all qualified young men, we must continue to grow our grant offerings. It is our goal to double available financial aid by 2029. In order to do that, we must Double Our Endowment in the next five years.

26 VISION 100 • SPRING 2023
V I S I ON

2 FACULTY COMPENSATION

Where we’ve been: For years, CC faced the challenge of finding outstanding teachers who chose the mission of Catholic education over the money available in public education.

Where we are: Thanks to the generosity of many, CC is blessed to now compensate our faculty and staff to the equivalent salaries of the top three public school districts in the state. We have also recently established an endowment for faculty and professional development.

Where we are exploring: Our goal is to provide the best educational environment for our students. In order to do this, we need to attract and retain the best possible teachers, coaches, and staff. We also need to provide our employees with the opportunity to engage in the best possible professional development. Growing Our Endowment is crucial to this effort.

27 VISION 100 • SPRING 2023
VISION 100 is built upon the “Three Pillars of Success” necessary to advance our mission.

3 SCHOOL CAMPUS DEVELOPMENT

Where we’ve been: CC has thrived through a history unique to any private schoolthe transition between five different campuses. From our humble beginnings on Harper Avenue in 1928, our “new” school on Belmont Avenue from 1934-1951, our infamous 6565 West Outer Drive, our “temporary” 27-year stay at Breakfast Drive in Redford, to our final location here in Novi, CC’s school spirit, enrollment, and achievement have never waivered.

Where we are: Currently situated on almost 120 acres in Novi, Michigan, Catholic Central is preparing for campus and facility growth. Recently approved or in-progress projects include the George & Mary Turek Hall of Science, a connector road and north entrance to 12 Mile Road, northern athletic fields, and a parking structure.

28 VISION 100 • SPRING 2023
V I S I ON

Where we are exploring: This is always the most discussed and evolving aspect of our campus development and, as a result, can also contain the greatest number of rumors. While our current facilities are strong, the constant competition from surrounding schools continues to push us to explore our capabilities to ensure we are offering the best possible student experience. We are currently exploring a number of on-sight developments, including a field house, auditorium, student commons, weight room, wrestling facility, and alumni center. We are also exploring additional property to house potential athletic developments such as a tennis center, natatorium, and golf practice facility. Again, these ideas are simply being explored and are completely dependent on funding, board approval, and city approval. We will not raise tuition to pay for expansion of facilities.

VISION 100 can only be accomplished if ALL

Shamrocks do their part and participate. Right now ALL gifts are being matched. Contact the Office of Advancement today at (248) 596-3838 to discuss how you can double our impact!

A MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

Dear Readers,

I became Editor in Chief of the Aluminator starting with the Spring 2018 issue, and this Spring 2023 issue is my last. I have decided to step aside and allow for new energy and fresh ideas to carry this publication into the future.

I have had the privilege of being involved with the Aluminator since the Fall 2008 issue when I was a summer intern in the Advancement Office. Over the years, I have learned so much and have come to appreciate all that goes into publishing a magazine. The Aluminator would not be what it is without the commitment of so many people who work hard to ensure the quality is never compromised.

I was fortunate enough to learn from my predecessor, the late Fr. Ray Paramo, CSB, and I have developed a great friendship with our graphic designers from Anne Ink, Anne and Wolfgang Brucker. I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to lead the production team these past five years, and I look forward to continuing to serve CC in my primary role as the Director of Student Activities.

Sincerely, Mike Carrier ’06

CC Family Days: CC Night at lC a

The Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations hosted a successful Red Wings night on January 12, as part of the CC Family Days Series, bringing together current families and alumni to foster community and camaraderie.

LET’S GO RED WINGS! was cheered loud and proud by 160 Shamrock-Red Wings faithful from the gondola at Little Caesars Arena, leading the Red Wings to a 4-1 victory of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

One of the highlights of the night was watching the excitement and thrill of young Owen Morris (future class of ’33), son of Shane Morris ’08, riding the zamboni.

The Advancement and Alumni Relations Office looks forward to hosting more events like this in the future. Go Red Wings, and Go Shamrocks!

ANNUAL DRIVE “Professional Sports”

The DRIVE ResulTs

The Student Ticket DRIVE is an annual event that is synonymous with school spirit at Catholic Central. Each year, students sell raffle tickets and collect money for tuition assistance. The seven school days that make up “DRIVE week” are half days and assemblies that promote school spirit and competition among the students, faculty, and staff.

The theme for this year was professional sports. Each grade level represented a professional sports league and the homerooms represented teams within those leagues. The seniors were NFL. The juniors were NBA. The sophomores were NHL. The freshmen were MLB.

The grand total was an unbelievable $802,814.13. That money will go directly toward tuition assistance for next year’s students. Our principal, Fr. Patrick Fulton, CSB, made it clear to the students that many families will be able to receive much-needed financial support toward tuition because of their efforts and generosity. For this achievement, Fr. Fulton rewarded the students with 15 DRIVE holidays. Jason Per ’23 was awarded the David Bullock ’16 Spirit of the DRIVE Award.

The American Legion Department of Michigan sponsors the annual competition as part of its effort to promote civic engagement and encourage young people to become active and engaged citizens.

The American Legion Oratorical Contest exists to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students.

Since 1938, the program has presented participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship.

AndRew schenk ’24: Poetry Out Loud Champion

Congratulations to schoolwide champion, Andrew Schenk ’24, who represented CC in the Poetry Out Loud State Championship held in East Lansing on March 3-4!

The Poetry Out Loud program, a Michigan Humanities Council partnership program with the National Endowment for the Arts, The Poetry Foundation, Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, the Library of Michigan, and the Michigan Youth Arts Association, encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition.

Poetry Out Loud helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage. Each student’s performance is judged on his Physical Presence, Voice and Articulation, Dramatic Appropriateness, Evidence of Understanding, and Overall Performance.

Model United Nations

Model United Nations (MUN) is an authentic simulation of the United Nations that provides participants with the opportunity to represent various countries or organizations as delegates.

Through debates and negotiations, they strive to address global issues and find solutions that benefit the international community while adhering to UN rules and procedures. Diplomacy, research, and parliamentary language are essential skills for MUN participants.

Recently, our Catholic Central Model United Nations team, under the leadership of CC history teacher Mr. Russ Facione, participated in a conference at Michigan State University, where we had the privilege of showcasing our abilities.

We are proud to announce that two of our members, Jordan Diegel ’24 and Logan Tamas ’25, received awards for their outstanding position papers. This event was a valuable experience for us and marks a significant milestone in the success of our team.

Looking forward, we aim to build on our success and participate in conferences at The University of Michigan Ann Arbor and in either New York or Washington D.C.

We are grateful to Catholic Central for giving us the opportunity to establish this club and compete in MUN conferences.

Our team is thankful for the support and guidance provided to us throughout this journey, and we are excited to see what the future holds for us.

Update ADMISSIONS

What a year it has been in the Admissions Office! Currently, the incoming Class of 2027 has more than 250 registered students, and we will continue work with interested families into the summer.

The three pillars of Vision 100 reflect themselves clearly in our Admissions Office, and I want to take a brief moment to highlight them below.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, our office was able to help award more than $500,000 in need-based tuition assistance to more than 80 members of the Class of 2027, the most we have ever awarded to a single class. What a clear impact on our enrollment!

The faculty and staff have helped us welcome more than 400 visiting shadow students, and the feedback from those visits is overwhelmingly positive. Many students comment on how engaging the teachers are, and the difference in how CC feels compared to not just their middle schools, but other high schools they have visited. As we continue to attract and retain not just the best teachers, but the best coaches, moderators, and mentors available for our students, we will continue to keep these young men engaged in the process.

Finally, the continued development of our facilities and programming continues to attract new families to our community. The construction of our Hall of Science and the opportunities it will present to our students has been met with pure excitement, and we look forward to helping share even more good news with families as we continue working to build our future!

We always talk about how blessed we are to be working in the Catholic Central Admissions Office. Other schools simply don’t have the resources we do, or the incredible interest in their offerings. Thank you to everyone who contributes to our school’s success and everyone who will help us make Vision 100 a reality.

As always, if you know a young man who would make a great Shamrock, please send him our way or simply refer him to our website (www.catholiccentral.net/admissions). We’ll take it from there.

Thank you for your prayers and support, and remember that every day is a GREAT day to be a Shamrock!

Keeping Up with Catholic Central Athletes

Basketball

Varsity Basketball, led by Coach Brandon Sinawi, finished the season with an 11-11 record. The Shamrocks competed in an extremely competitive CHSL Central Division featuring several teams among the top 10 in the state. CC earned two victories over Orchard Lake St. Mary and finished the league in fourth place. The season ended with a close loss to Northville in the district round of the playoffs.

Boardercross - 4th in the State

Varsity Boardercross, led by Coach Andrew Fee, finished first in the West League and first in the qualifier race to advance to the team state finals! Additionally, seven Shamrocks qualified to compete at individual states. CC finished in 4th place at the state finals, and Andrew Wahoski ’23 earned a top 10 finish individually.

Bowling

Varsity Bowling, led by Coach Laura Kuchinski, finished the season with a 4-7 dual meet record. The Shamrocks earned victories over Orchard Lake St. Mary and Notre Dame Prep and two victories over Brother Rice. CC competed hard in the CHSL Tournament, Oakland County Tournament, and regional championship, but fell just short of qualifying for the playoff rounds.

Skiing

Varsity Skiing, led by first-year head coach Spencer Hicks ’09, was a team of various levels of experience. The Shamrocks battled the unpredictable winter weather throughout the season and finished fifth in the Mt. Brighton League. CC finished fourth at the CHSL Championship and fifth at the regional championships.

Swimming & Diving - 8th in the State

Varsity Swim & Dive, led by Coach Jessica Stoddard, finished the season with a 6-2 dual meet record. The team finished second at the St. Francis de Sales Invitational and placed 3rd at the Oakland County Championships where they broke a pool record and won the 200 medley relay and also won the 200 freestyle relay. They were 3rd at the Catholic League Championship and qualified ten Shamrocks for the state finals. At the state finals, the Shamrocks placed 8th. The Shamrocks will return more points than any other D1 team next season. Roshi Turner ’25 became the first individual All-State African American Swimmer & All-American Consideration for the Shamrocks. Luke Mychalowych ’24 broke a team record previously held by James Leslie ’94 in the 200 Freestyle as well as the 100 Breaststroke previously held by Jonathan Lee ’18. Overall, the team earned Academic All-American honors with a 3.36 G.P.A.

Hockey - State Champions

Varsity Hockey, led by Coach Brandon Kaleniecki ’00, finished the season with an incredible record of 29-1. Their only loss, 2-1, came to Notre Dame Academy from Wisconsin. The Shamrocks dominated the season and won the CHSL, MIHL, and regional championships en route to winning their fourth-consecutive Division 1 State Championship, a 3-0 victory over Brighton. CC also became the first team in the 49-year history of the MHSAA tournament to not surrender a goal in the playoffs thanks to stellar play from goalies Kyle Moore ’23 and Luca Naurato ’23 who alternated games in net.

Wrestling - State Champions

Varsity Wrestling, led by Coach Mitch Hancock ’00, finished the season with a 28-2 dual meet record and won the CHSL, district, and regional championships. CC advanced to the state finals where they defeated Hartland 41-21 to win the program’s 16th State Championship, the most of any wrestling program in MHSAA history. The Shamrocks also had 14 individual state qualifiers for the seventh year in a row. Of those 14, 12 earned All-State honors, including seven winning individual state championships. Dlyan Gilcher ’23 became the second wrestler in program history to win four Individual State Championships. CC finished the season ranked 17th in the nation.
