THE DEDICATION OF THE GEORGE AND MARY TUREK
HALL OF SCIENCE

ALUMNI UPDATES

I am blessed to serve Catholic Central by ensuring its future is secure in the Basilian tradition of teaching Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge to young men.
Today, I write to you with gratitude and humility as we announce the official opening of the George and Mary Turek Hall of Science - a vision made possible by several very special donors, notably Mr. George Turek ’66
Despite our shared last name, George and I are not directly related. However, having worked closely with him for the last five years, I have come to consider him a brother. His love for Catholic Central runs deep, and his efforts to enhance our school’s excellence are truly inspiring.
Our plan for the next 100 years, known as Vision 100, is becoming a reality, thanks to George and many other generous donors. The opening of the new Hall of Science, coupled with campus development, increased faculty compensation, and additional tuition assistance, is at the core of Vision 100’s mission.
We are preparing our students for jobs that do not exist yet, and the Hall of Science establishes CC as one of the premier STEM schools in the country. It is not just the building. Unique offerings such as aerospace, flight, astronomy, CNC machinery, and CAD design build upon the foundational blocks of a Catholic Central education, ensuring that our graduates are prepared.
Catholic Central would not be the school it is today without George’s dedication and support. We deeply appreciate his contributions. Nevertheless, we must recognize that we cannot solely rely on his generosity to carry us forward.
George would be the first to remind us that true progress requires a collective effort from our entire community. He believes that everyone should do their part.
I am confident that this story will inspire each of us to reflect on our own contributions and how we can all play a part in making Catholic Central the greatest high school in the world.
God Bless and Go Shamrocks,
Ed Turek ’85
President

R On Thursday, May 2, 2024, the 35th Annual Alumni Association Dinner and All Classes Reunion was held at the St. Mary’s Cultural Center in Livonia, honoring the recipients of the 2024 Fr. Canning F. Harrison, CSB Distinguished Alumnus Award, Veno Hesano ’67 (pictured left) and Hon. Sean Cox ’75 (pictured right).
Veno Hesano ’67 and Hon. Sean Cox ’75
Fr. Canning F. Harrison, CSB graced the halls of CC for over three decades (1952 - 1987). The Distinguished Alumnus Award stands in memory of Fr. Harrison’s tireless work as Director of the Alumni Association. It is awarded each spring to those alumni and Basilian Fathers who have exemplified the philosophy and mission of Detroit Catholic Central High School. Fr. Harrison entered eternal rest in 1991.
Mark your calendars for the 36th Annual Alumni Dinner on Thursday, May 8, 2025.
Kevin Boyle ’97, former Senior Strategy Analyst in Space and Launch at Boeing, visited Catholic Central and toured the new Hall of Science. Kevin is now the Chief Engineer at SAIC.
“It’s absolutely incredible. If any kid comes here as an 8th grader and tours that building and has any interest in science whatsoever, they’re going to be begging their parents to come here,” stated Boyle.
“It’s amazing to see that type of thing here at Catholic Central. When I was here, we had rain barrels in the hallway to catch the rain drops. So, to go from that to this is absolutely amazing. It couldn’t have happened to a better institution and a better place,” he continued.
On Thursday, June 6, 2024, Catholic Central High School hosted its annual Legacy Reunion for graduates 50+ years or more removed. Nearly 200 Shamrocks attended the event, which included Mass in the Chapel, followed by a buffet lunch served in the cafeteria afterward. Attendees included a wide variety of graduating class years dating back to Jerry Stocking ’43, age 98, to graduates of the Class of 1974, age 68.
In May of 2024, Jerry Stocking ’43, age 98, attended Catholic Central’s Legacy Reunion for graduates 50+ years or more removed. We were able to sit down with Jerry and talk about what it was like to attend Catholic Central High School over 80 years ago.
When he was a student, Jerry explained that tuition was $60 per year. He had a sister and five brothers who all went to Catholic Central High School.
The school day started with Mass at 8:00 a.m. After school, he took the bus home and went straight to work at a grocery store where the money he made went to his family.
Despite being busy with work, Jerry stated that he made a lot of friends at Catholic Central, and he remembers many of his classmates.
During his time at Catholic Central, Jerry recalls the compassion he experienced from the Basilian priests. “They took an interest in each and every one of us. We didn’t have that big of a class, but they took interest in us. And as a result, that interest built up into being somebody that you could confide in,” he stated.
After graduation, Jerry went into the Army Air Force. The 2024 Legacy Reunion was one of five different reunions Jerry has attended at Catholic Central. He also attended his 45th and 50th reunions.
Currently, Jerry spends much of his time with family. He has 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He’s also active within his senior community residence and enjoys when his daughter visits him daily. We look forward to seeing Jerry at next year’s reunion!

For more information about Planned Giving or to make a gift to Catholic Central, please contact John Doyle ’82 at jdoyle@catholiccentral. net or 248-596-3846.
CC is proud to announce Mr. John M. Doyle Jr. ’82 as the new Director of Planned Giving. Duties of the position include assisting members of the St. Basil Legacy Society who wish to create a legacy that will last in perpetuity here at CC.
The St. Basil Legacy Society consists of those alumni and friends who have shown generosity and foresight by making a planned or deferred gift to Catholic Central.
Members of the St. Basil Legacy Society either have included CC in their wills with outright bequests or other planned gifts, such as charitable gift annuities, gifts of life insurance, or charitable remainder trust gifts.
Gifts can be made in the form of real estate, memorials and tribute gifts, tangible personal property, stock transfer, appreciated securities, and endowed gifts.
Doyle has been part of the Catholic Central family since May of 2022, serving as the former Director of Major Gifts and Managing Director of the Office of Advancement and Alumni Relations. He specializes in Gifts by Wills and Bequests, Gifts of Life Insurance, Gifts-In-Kind, and Endowments.
Prior to coming to Catholic Central, Doyle served as the Executive Director of Development for Major Gifts and Director of Advancement at Madonna University in Livonia, where he also graduated with his B.S. in Marketing. He was also the Director of Advancement with the Archdiocese of Detroit and former Mayor of the City of South Lyon from 2002 to 2009.
Doyle was appointed the new Director of Planned Giving in July of 2024 after the passing of Rudy Seichter ’59, who served in the position for 20 years.
Catholic Central would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who donated to our Athletic Day of Giving on June 11!
Thanks to 363 generous donors, the athletic department raised $171,832, succeeding this year’s goal of $150,000.
Over 20 different departments benefited from the fundraising event, including 18 varsity sports teams, the media and academic teams, band, robotics, and esports.
A true Shamrock, Rudy exemplified what it means to be a man of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. He passed away on July 20, 2024, at 83. However, his love for Catholic Central can still be felt in the halls and among conversations with those who knew him best.
Rudy was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and a graduate of the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor and Wayne State University. He spent his business career in sales with IBM, general management, and executive positions with ADP and Bell & Howell, serving the banking, insurance, and automotive and motorcycle industries.
After retirement, he volunteered at Detroit Catholic Central High School as the Director of Planned Giving. He was deeply passionate about Catholic Central hockey, having been on the school’s first-ever Hockey State Championship team in 1959. He also served on the Athletic Hall of Fame committee and as an editor for the Aluminator
May his spirit continue to inspire the Catholic Central community for generations to come.
celebrates the remarkable life of Rudy Seichter ’59
To celebrate Rudy’s life and time at Catholic Central, we asked some of our Advancement staff to share their favorite memories of him. Here’s what they had to say:
“When I started working at CC in 2013, Rudy was one of the first members of the team to really make me feel welcome. He invited me to his Class of 1959 reunion gatherings and always made a point to stop by my office and check in. I will miss catching up with him during our lunches together and hearing his stories about CC. His years of service to CC and love for our school will never be forgotten.”
Shaun Sova ’09, Director of Communications
“Rudy lived a life of generosity and dedication to the Catholic faith, his family, Catholic Central, and the larger community. He lived and shared Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. Rudy was a CC man; a man of Mary, Alma Mater. His infectious smile and uplifting laugh were memorable and enriching.” Tim Burke ’86, Director of Alumni Relations and Class Endowments
“Rudy was a true Shamrock. He prioritized serving others and putting the team first. This was how he lived his life. We will forever be grateful for the legacy Rudy has left behind as the embodiment of a man of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge. May his soul rest in peace.”
Ed Turek ’85, President of Catholic Central
“Rudy Seichter ’59 was a valuable member of the Catholic Athletic Hall of Fame Selection, Executive, and Legacy Committees. Rudy’s dedication and passion for honoring legacy athletes will be deeply missed. Alongside Ron Ross ’59, he tirelessly researched the archives to ensure deserving legacy athletes were inducted into the CC Hall of Fame. Beyond his invaluable contributions, Rudy was a dear friend to many and provided vital input for our committee and plaque narratives. His meticulous proofreading of all plaques and communications exemplified his commitment to excellence. Rudy’s impact on the Hall of Fame community was profound, and his loss will be keenly felt. We fondly remember him as one of CC’s best, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched.” Jim Gibbons ’68, Detroit Catholic Central Athletic Hall of Fame Chairman
“At Catholic Central, we talk about The Standard. When it comes to making an impact on CC, that standard is Rudy. He’s a State Champion who gave back to the school in countless ways, and even spoke to classes to pass down his experiences and wisdom. His joy and happiness radiated to all of those around him, and he will be missed in the hockey stands and around the school.” Mike Oakleaf ’05, Educator, Assistant Hockey Coach, and Assistant to the President
“My word to describe Rudy Seichter is “infectious.” His love for CC was infectious. He so loved this school and the Basilain Fathers. His passion for cheering for his Shamrocks was infectious. No one loved CC more than Rudy. His devotion to CC hockey was infectious. He was so proud to be a member of our first State Championship Hockey Team in 1959 and a key figure in the great tradition of CC hockey. His commitment to the men of CC was infectious. He was so influential in getting others to give back like he did. He was determined to make a difference and he did. Rudy’s smile and spirit were infectious. He so loved our alumni, students, families and friends - all men of CC. What I will miss most about Rudy is his smile and his passion. He made all of us better and for that am forever grateful.” Dan Collins ’84, Director of Advancement
“Even though I only met Rudy 4.5 years ago, we had a friendship that seemed like we had known one another forever. He was so selfless. I had the utmost respect for him. He was a man of undying faith and had a strong conviction for family values and living a life of integrity. You would be hard pressed to find a man that was so genuine, bold, and funny - with an infectious laugh. He was a great storyteller and loved to have fun in the workplace. He told me about his co-ed baseball team at one of his workplaces called “Rudy’s Rowdies.” He always said we should start a co-ed team at CC and call ourselves “Eddie’s something” after Ed Turek. He never came up with the right alliteration, but he was always trying! I miss you, good buddy. Keep thinking about our baseball team name!”
Angela Hill, Director of Parent and Community Relations
On Sunday, August 11, 2024, Catholic Central held a dedication ceremony for the official opening of the George and Mary Turek Hall of Science. The construction of the new 57,000 square foot Hall of Science was announced in May of 2023 as part of the school’s Vision 100 plan, an expansion project made possible by one very special donor, Mr. George Turek ’66, who named the building after his parents.
“The dedication of the George and Mary Turek Hall of Science was an incredible day filled with more love than we could have ever imagined. We’re so thankful to all our donors, especially the incredible generosity of George Turek ’66 for believing in the mission of Catholic Central. We’d also like to thank our guest speaker Marcus Luttrell. The Hall of Science represents our commitment to providing students with the best possible education. This building will inspire generations of students to explore, innovate, and achieve their dreams, all while being grounded in the values that define our institution.”
— Ed Turek ’85, President of Catholic Central
On the day of the dedication, Catholic Central hosted a blessing and ribbon cutting ceremony from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. in the parking lot outside of the new building, featuring guest speaker Marcus Luttrell, a retired United States NAVY Seal who is best known for inspiring the incredible true story “Lone Survivor.”
During this speech, Luttrell discussed the importance of being raised with goodness, discipline, and knowledge. He talked about how his father raised him to have discipline and this has helped him persevere in tough situations. He also discussed the importance of faith and how he recently converted to Catholicism.
Attendees were then encouraged to come inside for the grand opening and reception from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., where light refreshments were served and the building was open to the public for touring.
The Hall of Science building is expected to help Catholic Central expand on its already strong academic makeup, open the school to additional community engagement, and establish the school as one of the premier STEM schools in the Midwest. Unique curriculum offerings such as aerospace, flight, and astronomy will complement more traditional STEM offerings of science classes, CNC machinery, and CAD design.
All 1,000+ students entering the 2024-2025 school year will benefit from the new building, which features an immersion theater, lab classrooms, a FIRST Robotics arena, a machine lab where students can graduate with their license, an engineering lab, a technology suite, a greenhouse, a RedBird flight simulator, and more.
The foremost unique features of the new building, explained by our Director of STEM, Amy Ely.
The full-size RedBird flight simulator is among the many unique features that students can take advantage of as part of the new curriculum. Students can earn flight hours and graduate with a commercial pilot license. The school houses six smaller desktop units for students to gain experience prior to utilizing the full simulator.
The immersive theater is designed to function as a space where the audience can become totally immersed in the 270° wrap-around screen and exceptional audio system. It will help them feel as if they are part of whatever they are viewing. The theater houses telescoping bleacher seats, accommodating 80 people, and 60 additional seats on the floor in front of the bleachers, bringing the total seated occupancy to 140 people.
The Prospiant-designed greenhouse was designed to hold multiple experimental plant-growth projects, but expanded to include eco-sustainability. Tables located around the perimeter of the greenhouse will house experiments that classes are working on. Located down the center of the greenhouse will be Agrotonomy aeroponic towers to help promote eco-sustainable growth.
There are also eight laboratory classrooms in the new Hall of Science, which were designed to function as flexible learning spaces. Each of these rooms functions as both a laboratory and a classroom, as well as being able to open up the center of the room for experiments or demonstrations.
Each room was designed with the future in mind to allow for maximum growth as we move into the future and technology changes. The layout of the classrooms encourages collaboration and project-based learning in a teamwork-style atmosphere when not being used for lecture.
Today’s employers are looking for employees who have all of these soft skills as well as the intelligence, so things like collaboration, teamwork, innovation, and communication are of the utmost importance with the design of the laboratory classrooms. Those skills that employers are looking for are built into the everyday classroom life of our students, thereby making them more desirable by employers.
This multifunctional and multi-purpose classroom will have technology desks for each student with dual monitors and a dock for their laptop, giving them the technology they need to be successful using CAD, modeling for 3D printing, or programming for AP Computer Science.
The Nanowall that encloses the shelving, which holds up to 30 3D printers, makes it possible to contain any non-toxic fumes emanating from the 3D printers from entering the classroom. The nook in this room is designed as an innovation space, where teams can work together brainstorming, ideating, and collaborating.
The astronomy section of the Hall of Science building includes a 4-meter Aluminum Single Skin Observa-Dome with Electric Azimuth Drive, power bars, electric shutters, Ace Automation Package, structural analysis, and Neoprene insulation and packaging.
The opening of the George and Mary Turek Hall of Science marked a significant milestone in Catholic Central’s dedication to its students. Thanks to the generous donations from alumnus George Turek ’66, and others, Catholic Central is excited to use these state-of-the-art facilities to continue developing the next generation of leaders into men of Goodness, Discipline, and Knowledge.
Dear Shamrock Alumni,
Greetings From the Principal’s Office!
I am pleased to share some of the highlights of our students and the exciting developments on campus. One of the most significant milestones for the 2024-2025 school year is the opening of the George and Mary Turek Hall of Science. This state-of-the-art facility will provide vast opportunities for not just our students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, but in every department.
As you will clearly remember from your time on campus, the hidden talents and abilities among our student body are endless. We have been blessed throughout the years and look forward to the ways that our students might apply their unique talents to the new resources available to them in the George and Mary Turek Hall of Science.
Please enjoy reading these student highlights, and I sincerely thank you for your continued thoughts, prayers, and support of our school.
We truly could not do what we do without you.
May God continue to bless you abundantly,
Fr. Patrick Fulton, CSB Principal
Dear Fellow Shamrocks,
As we begin our 2024-2025 school year, I am pleased to welcome more than 300 new students to our school community. These new families represent almost 90 feeder schools and 60 zip codes. Each young man possesses a wealth of diverse talents and interests, and I cannot wait to see the impact each of them will have on our school.
By far, our biggest recruiting tool continues to be the word of mouth from our current and alumni families. Thank you to all of you who encouraged a family to reach out to us or who brought a new family with you to an event on campus. Please continue to encourage families to reach out to us, and we will guide them through the rest of the process.
We are excited to continue the Junior Shamrocks program for its second year! We have many fun things planned for the Fall season, including for football games, a soccer night, and activities for robotics, band, and more.
Our admissions year kicks off in earnest with our “Admissions 101” presentation on September 25. We will record the presentation and make it available on our website. This a great starting point for any of your friends or family who might be curious about Catholic Central for their son.
We are hosting shadow days as well as our annual fall Open House (November 3). We will continue to leverage our Junior Shamrocks program to provide as much access as we can to potential families.
As always, we welcome all referrals and questions regarding admissions to Catholic Central. You can email us at admissions@catholiccentral.net or schedule an appointment online at www.catholiccentral.net/admissions.

Their contributions to the school’s athletic legacy and their ongoing successes serve as inspiration to current and future generations of Shamrocks.
Detroit Catholic Central High School is honored to announce its recognition as the 2024 Detroit Catholic High School League (CHSL) School of the Year.
The CHSL James Leary School of the Year Award is presented annually to the league school that best exemplifies spirit, sportsmanship, and cooperation. Established in 1980, this award celebrates excellence in both athletic achievement and character.
The CHSL School of the Year distinction reflects the dedication and passion exhibited by the entire Detroit Catholic Central community, from students to faculty to supporters. Through their collective efforts, Detroit Catholic Central has consistently embodied the principles of sportsmanship and camaraderie, setting a standard of excellence for others to follow. This is the third time Detroit Catholic Central has been recognized with the award, as it was also named School of the Year in 1983 and 2013.
In addition to the school’s outstanding achievement, Detroit Catholic Central is proud to announce that two members of its community will be inducted into the CHSL Hall of Fame this year.
Mike Anderson, Head Coach of Golf for Detroit Catholic Central, has been an integral part of the school’s golf success for the past 14 years. Under his leadership, the golf program has flourished, securing numerous championships and accolades. Anderson’s impressive track record includes 6 CHSL titles (2012, 2014, 2017, 2019, 2022, 2023), 5 Regional Championships (2013, 2016, 2017, 2023), 2 State Finalists (2014, 2021), and an impressive 4 State Championships (2015, 2016, 2017, 2022) in Division 1 of the MHSAA. Beyond his coaching endeavors, Anderson continues to excel in his own golfing career, winning the 38th GAM Mid-Amateur Championship in 2020.
Joey Kamish ’19 will also be honored with induction into the CHSL Hall of Fame. Kamish left a significant mark on the legacy of the lacrosse program at Catholic Central. He recorded 214 goals and had 124 assists (338 points) during his three-year varsity career, and was a three-time All Catholic League (2017, 2018, 2019), thee-time 1st Team All State (2017, 2018, 2019), and two-time US Lacrosse All American (2018, 2019).
Additionally, Kamish also won the 2018 MLive Detroit Lacrosse Player of the Year award, and was the first player from Catholic Central to be named “Mr. Lacrosse” in 2019 as Michigan’s High School Lacrosse Player of the Year. In 2018, Kamish played a pivotal role in leading Catholic Central to the 2018 CHSL Title and the school’s first MHSAA State Championship in 2018.
Kamish committed to Loyola University, Maryland, where he has spent the past five years playing for the Greyhounds. Luke Mychalowych ’24 has been named the 2024 Walt Bazylewicz Athlete of the Year by the Catholic League Executive Athletic Board. He was selected the winner among 33 high schools representing over 23,000 students.
According to Catholic Central’s Athletic Director, Aaron Babicz ’93, “This is the league’s most prestigious award given out to one male and female athlete per year. As Luke’s Athletic Director for the past four years, I have had the distinct privilege of witnessing his exceptional dedication, talent, and character both in and out of the pool. He is not only an outstanding athlete, but also a remarkable individual who embodies the qualities of a true leader and role model.”
The Catholic League Executive Athletic Board instituted the award in 1989 to honor the top athletes in the Catholic League. Mychalowych was nominated for the award based on his remarkable achievements, including being a multi-time All-American and State Champion. In addition to his athletic achievements, Mychalowych has an extreme dedication to academic excellence, positive attitude, humility, and respect towards his teammates, coaches, and competitors.
Mychalowych will continue his academic and swimming career for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers this Fall.

Matt is pictured with his girlfriend, Karina Rohrer-Meck. Karina played volleyball at the collegiate level, and no doubt, pointed out some of the intricacies of the game during the volleyball matches they attended.

Did you know ?
Alumnus Jim Delaney ’68 found this Rosary Chime parish bulletin among his mother’s things.
In it is the announcement of the final graduating class of Rosary High School before Monsignor VanAntwerp would request the Basilian Fathers to assume leadership and turn it into a Central High School for boys, later to be named Detroit Catholic Central.
You will notice from the announcement on page three of the June 1928 edition of the Rosary Chimes that the school was changing and all Rosary girls were requested to enroll at Cathedral Central High School for girls.
The Basilian Fathers wouldn’t receive a hand-written letter request from VanAntwerp to assume control of the school until August of 1928. School began in September of 1928.
