As a wedding planner by day she spends her time sharing all that knowledge with couples as they navigate the world of vendors, venues and deposits so what better next step than creating a publication to bring that all together? Right now Kirstin is launching the third annual SW Wedding Expo while she takes time away from us here at Details to soak up some maternity leave with her newest sweetheart. This leaves me, Candace, unattended and excited to write this bio for her full of glowing praise that she won’t be able to change!

This Saskatchewan based - and focussed - wedding magazine is our way of sharing the many beautiful, original, and outstanding options Saskatchewan has to offer local brides & grooms. So let’s make 2021 a year of collaboration and bring out the best in one another - both vendors and couples.

River's closet boasts an unnatural amount of neon which goes well with their appreciation of fine wine (the kind that comes in a box with a convenient valve). River is a wealth of knowledge and has graciously agreed to write our advice column, stating simply that everyone should have the wedding of their dreams.

IS A REHEARSAL NECESSARY? This is one of those questions which has two completely different answers depending on who you’re talking to. As a wedding photographer, sitting here alongside my wedding planner friend, it may come as no surprise that we are firmly in the ‘Yes, please’ camp on this one. But hear me out before you walk away! Rehearsals are a great opportunity for your party, family, officiant, and photographer(s) to see the processional timing and layout. Everyone can run through the plan once or twice to see where they enter the ceremony, where they will stand, how fast - or slow - they will move, and the timeline of events. This is especially important if you have little ones involved. For this reason I recommend having the rehearsal in the ceremony location if you’re able to gain access the afternoon or evening before. You don’t have to be there long; even twenty minutes is enough for a quick run through with questions. Attending a rehearsal also gives me a chance to speak with the officiant. I want to know if there are areas that I am restricted from entering, if there are certain points in the
proceedings that they would like us to cease shooting out of respect for their beliefs, and if there are any surprises and special moments that we should be watching for. I love unique weddings and am always happy to see a little twist on a traditional ceremony with family rings for the kids, or songs sung by loved ones - there are a million little ways to make every part of the day your own, including the ceremony. Whatever you decide to do, keep in mind the purpose of your rehearsal; to take some of the guesswork out of the ceremony for you and the people involved. I request a few cell phone photos and a quick rundown of the plan if the rehearsal is too far away for me to be in attendance so I have an idea of what the lighting and layout will look like before arriving. If there are a few minutes before the ceremony the next day, I make sure to introduce myself and my second shooter to the officiant and ask the questions we were unable to pose the day before so they are confident that we intend to respect the boundaries and importance of their role in the ceremony.

BEATING THE HEAT AN ODE TO SUMMER WEDDINGS IN SASKATCHEWAN JESSICA WILLIAMS Summer in Saskatchewan is absolutely the busiest season for weddings, but it isn’t all sunshine and blue skies. Well, maybe it is mostly sunshine and blue skies, but that gorgeous glowing orb can pack a serious punch of unforgiving heat. The last thing anyone wants is to see their guests and wedding party wilting on their big day. Keeping the focus of the day on your celebration and love (rather than reviving Great Aunt Edna from her bout of heatstroke) is easily achieved with a little forethought and preparedness. First and foremost, it’s important to consider the date you’re choosing. July and August are often the hottest months in Saskatchewan. If you want better odds at cooler temps consider planning your big day in late spring or early fall. That said, if you and your partner have your hearts set on June through August there are some steps you can take to ensure a pleasant day free of fainting.
Time is of the Essence - Consider the time of day you plan to say your vows. The sun is at its highest in the mid afternoon, which also makes it the hottest time of day. A morning or evening ceremony could be a better option to take advantage of cooler temperatures. Location, Location, Location! You will first have to decide if your venue is outdoors or indoors. Most indoor venues in Saskatchewan are equipped with air conditioning to deal with the hefty heat of summer. If your heart is set on outdoors, surrounded by the gorgeous flora and vistas that Saskatchewan has to offer, take the time to scope out the location and seek out its shady spots ahead of your day. A beautiful sunny day will still be bright and summery even if you are in the shade. Also consider setting up your own shady spots with rentable event tents to give your party and guests a space to cool off. (Fun fact: these also double as shelter in the event a surprise storm decides to roll on in and rain on your parade- er, party).

Hydration - Staying hydrated is key for warding off heatstroke. Keep a cooler of ice with bottles of water available in the vehicle that is transporting you from one location to another. It may be tempting to fill the cooler with other tasty beverages, and while we won’t tell you not to do that, remember to keep a lot of water as well. Alcohol will make dehydration even worse. A Place to Chill - Try to take vehicles with air conditioning and plan photos near parking areas if your day is going to be a hot one. You can leave the vehicles running (just this one day, we don’t mind) and hop in every few minutes as you need to. Those few moments of cool air will help revitalize you and your party. What to Wear, What to Wear… Have you ever noticed that couples who run off for destination weddings on tropical beaches often wear very light wedding attire? There is no reason you have to wear a full wool suit or layers and layers of crinoline just because you’re not on a beach. If you know your wedding will be held in the middle of the summer, plan your attire accordingly. Dressing for the temperature will make the day more enjoyable, and your wedding party will appreciate it too. Saskatchewan is famous for fluctuating temperatures, so you can always plan to layer with a shawl or light jacket to keep you warmer if the thermometer dips after sunset. Accessorize for the Weather - Another favourite and creative solution is to use umbrellas. These accessories do double duty and protect from both sun and unexpected showers. Have a few extras available for guests who need to get out of the heat. We love a summer wedding, and doing a few small things to prepare can go a long way in keeping everyone happy while soaking up those beautiful sunny days.

PLANNING WITH COVID RESTRICTIONS JESSICA WILLIAMS For the past year we have all been living in a tumult of changing rules while the world tries to slow the trajectory of covid-19. Countless couples postponed their 2020 weddings in hopes that 2021 would be calmer and carry fewer gathering restrictions. As we move into the fifth month of 2021, things don’t seem much clearer. Will couples be allowed to invite everyone on their desired guest lists? Will they be able to gather indoors for a ceremony or reception? Will social distance have to be maintained among guests? Will masks be required? There is so much we don’t know and it is hugely frustrating. We understand and we feel it too. With so many variables, your vendors may be feeling extra stress as they hear rumblings of couples who are considering ignoring public health orders. This could be anything from inviting more guests than are allowed, to skipping the masks, or simply turning a blind eye when rules are broken. We understand the intense disappointment you may be feeling in having to rearrange your wedding plans (yet again), but you may want to consider the implications if you’re debating flouting the rules. To be blunt, your vendors may back out at the last minute, or even leave part way through your wedding. They have a right to refuse unsafe work and many vendors are adding covid clauses to their contracts. Vendors are businesses which are run by people; people who likely cannot
10
afford to be pinned with hefty fines if they are hosting or involved in events that go against Public Health Orders. Your photographer, for example, could find themselves in an uncomfortable situation if they have to take pictures of your over-crowded event. A booked venue would hate to be in the position of having to cancel your reception or turn away you and your wedding party when too many people arrive. What may feel like a valid option in the moment could end up being disastrous in the long run. While it is frustrating that we are still dealing with this, rather than putting the people we care about at risk we need to find creative solutions. Here are a few options you can - and probably should - investigate: Get insurance!! Ask any insurance broker about their options. Wedding insurance has been around for years and now it’s a must have item to ensure you aren’t out of pocket if things go sideways. Plan for your ideal day as if there will be no restrictions but also plan several backup scenarios. Based on what Saskatchewan has done previously, we suggest the following as a starting place. Plan A: No restrictions. Invite everyone as usual; loved ones would rather be uninvited than not invited at all. Include a note on your invitations indicating that

adjustments will be made for the restrictions at the time. Then set up a website to direct them to for updates on the situation. Plan B: 150 people at the ceremony and 30 at the reception. Have a list of people who will need new invitations to your virtual options. Have a plan for the meal that will follow restrictions. With fewer people, you will likely be saving some money, so come up with a plan for what to do with that as well. This could be a postponed reception, a honeymoon, a house, or something completely different! Plan C: 30 people maximum and no meals. In this case, have another list of guests who will need the virtual ceremony invites. You will also have even more extra cash to allocate elsewhere.
If Plan B or C means postponing the whole thing, that’s totally fine! Consider outlining your backup plans on your website so people can attempt to plan ahead. When sending un-vitations, the only ‘rule’ you should follow is to send it the same way you sent the original invite (mail, email, etc.). Provide virtual options. (See DETAILS February 2021 for a full list of virtual options). By keeping the rights and safety of your guests in the forefront, your wedding can be a beautiful bright spot in the year for your family and friends.
Know the date you need to make a final decision by. This will probably be around 2-4 weeks out, depending on your vendor agreements.

TRADITIONS TO SCRAP JESSICA WILLIAMS
Weddings are, at their core, rooted in tradition. They change and evolve over time, but the entire idea of a ceremony to legally bind two people to each other dates back to 2350 BC (Seriously! We checked!). Obviously, the times have changed and weddings have become wonderful celebrations as unique as the couples themselves. It’s common to get hung up on some traditions just because “everyone has always done them”, but that doesn’t mean you have to include them in your plans. We hereby give you permission to scrap anything that doesn’t fit your style! With that, here is a list of some traditions we’ve noticed are on their way out. Throwing the bouquet/garter - We’re going to come right out and say it: throwing flowers and undergarments at your single friends as a way of telling them their time for wedded bliss is coming is kind of weird. Not to mention kind of humiliating. Let’s face it, society makes enough unsolicited comments and observations on the relationships of others, we don’t need to make a game of it. I remember being eleven years old at my cousin’s wedding and marveling as the single women piled on top of one another in an attempt to catch the bundle of flowers. Even as a child, the skirmish seemed intense and uncomfortable. Either your guests will be very excited for it and trample each other, or utterly lackluster which will make it awkward. Either way, spare them the situation. Programs - These little pieces of folded paper can be a lovely keepsake for your guests...or they can end up on the floor, trampled and crumpled as they slide from laps. Often they are an expense that just isn’t necessary. Sure they give an idea of the timeline, but realistically your guests are sticking around whether the ceremony lasts ten minutes or an hour. Save the paper and the cost. Formal Rehearsal Supper - The rehearsal itself is important, otherwise your wedding party won’t have a clue what’s going on, but it can be simple and certainly doesn’t require a feast afterwards. A barbeque or light meal with your wedding party and family can be a lot of fun; it simply doesn’t need to be formal. As an aside, please note that while the rehearsal supper isn’t necessary, a half hour rehearsal is still important to make sure everyone knows what to expect on the day (more on this in our article on page 6).

Flower Girl/Ring Bearer - These adorable little people can add some sweet moments to your ceremony, but if you don’t have any little ones in your immediate life that would be a good fit for the role, skip it. Also remember that often parents with small children will want to sit close to an aisle so they can hoist their screaming kids up and out without drawing attention to themselves in the event of a meltdown (you know, from a twisted sock or itchy tag). If the child is part of the wedding party it’s a lot more difficult to get them out discreetly. Small children rarely do really well with standing still for longer than thirty seconds in fancy clothes. Consider having the special little people in your life in a couple of adorable photos instead. Favours - The purpose of favours is to say ‘thank you’ to your guests for making the effort to attend, but there are other ways to do it. A glass of something to toast with and a piece of cake is sufficient as far as etiquette is concerned, but a meaningful or useful favour means so much more than wasting hours assembling bundles of tulle wrapped mints (also, those home-bundled candies don’t seem all that sanitary). The Chicken Dance - Do we need to explain this one? Sure you may have a couple of distant relatives who think it’s a gas, but let’s just skip this one, please. Giving Away the Bride/Groom - Families are complicated and varied with layers and layers of dynamics thrown in. Some families aren’t close. Some families are divided. Some families are blended. Also, people aren’t property to be given away. Skip it if it makes you uncomfortable. There are loads of other processional ideas to choose from; you can enter on you own or with each other, or with a friend, or another family member, or any other combination that makes you feel happy. If your dream has always been to walk down the aisle with your father or mother, please do! But if it makes you feel uncomfortable, feel free to go another route. The bottom line is this is your day and you get to skip whatever traditions you don’t like. For a couple to be married all you really need is you and your soon-tobe-spouse, someone to officiate, and two witnesses. Everything else is icing on the cake (or donut platter if you don’t want a cake).

AN INTERVIEW WITH
Karen Sanderson is an expert on bringing wedding dreams to life. As the founder and owner of Wired 4 Weddings, Sanderson designs weddings and events from her home base of the Cypress Hills in Southwest Saskatchewan. An interest in decorating events spurred her to take classes at the institute of Wedding/Event Design (IWED) in Las Vegas as well as the Wedding Planners Institute of Canada (WPIC). Working from the Cypress Hills provides not only an incredibly picturesque backdrop for weddings, but gives a great deal of satisfaction to Sanderson. “The most fulfilling part of my job is providing a needed service in our corner of the province,” she says. “It is no secret that I love what I do,” touting the personal relationships, speeches and toasts, and connections with other industry professionals as favourite facets of her job. When you partner with Wired 4 Weddings, the path to creating your dream day begins with a consultation where Sanderson collaborates with you to create a mood board of colours and styles that resonate with you and your partner. After the budget is set, she gets to work bringing those ideas into reality, creating the intimate space you’ve imagined. Wedding trends come and go (and often return, according to Sanderson who has six years of wedding design under her belt), but pushing a couple towards a style or away from something they love is not something she would ever do. “I don’t believe in dictating styles, I just embrace whatever the couple loves and likes for their individual style and budget. While much of her event planning takes place in the Cypress Hills, a little travel never halts her having journeyed as far as a seven hour drive from home base for a wedding. Vendors and couples alike who have worked with Sanderson say the relationship they build with her makes them feel more like a close friend than a client. Her genuine personality shines through in every interaction. Regular comments from her past clients tout her generosity with her time as she delivers a polished and complete product on the wedding day that surpasses expectations. Sanderson has truly found her calling in delighting couples by designing stunning weddings. “I love being part of a team of professional vendors that come together to create flawless, magical wedding weekends for each and every couple.”

The ceremony took place in the Cypress Hills which in and of itself is a such a special location. “Jon & Jessica had a gorgeous wedding last spring in Cypress Hills. It was one of my first Covid Weddings and was honestly, perfection! They hired Wired4Weddings to decorate their outdoor ceremony & indoor reception at Cypress Hills, SK. Every detail at Jon & Jessica’s wedding was thoughtfully planned out. My favourite thing was the outdoor church that was setup by Wired4Weddings in the middle of the forest. DJ vs. LIVE BAND JESSICA WILLIAMS
Once the knot has been tied, tears of joy have been blotted and the toasts delivered, It’s time to kick up your heels and get the party started! The question of whether to hire a DJ or a live band is long debated. Which route is best for you? Only you and your partner can answer that, but we’re here to help you weigh the options. Pros of a DJ: A good DJ will read the crowd and know what to play to get them moving and create a party atmosphere. Due to the massive quantity of music available, DJs can accommodate an eclectic range of styles and tastes and have an easier time taking requests. Depending on the demographic of your guest list, you may need someone who can switch from bluegrass to alternative to pop to rap. Experienced DJs are also often able to step in as MC later on in the evening. A DJ has the ability to set up a playlist so the party doesn’t have to stop if they need to step away for
a washroom break. They will usually come with all of the lights and setup that you need to get the party rolling and typically have a lower price point than a live band. Pros of a Live Band: Hiring a live band provides a one-of-a-kind intimate performance on your day. They may not be able to switch gears and perform a variety of musical styles, but they will perform their signature style very well. A live band will take care of the playlist so you don’t need to worry about your relatives requesting cringy songs. The energy of live music is unlike anything else, and a really good band will blow you away with their versatility and performance. If you’re having a tough time deciding, it is absolutely an option to have both! Start off with soft live music during the meal and cocktail hour and then switch to a DJ later in the evening for the dance.

Dear River, We were supposed to get married last year but put it off when covid hit. Now we’re moving ahead this year whether we can have our full guest list or not. The trouble is, I don’t know how to un-vite the people who were invited before! Help! Covid, amiright? Aside from being a worldwide catastrophe, it has also made it super hard to plan a wedding! Sure the Public Health Orders say one thing this week, but who knows what next week will bring. That is mega stressful for basically everyone involved in planning an event. With allowable gathering numbers constantly changing, what to do about the guest list? That’s a hard question and I have no advice. Good luck! Ok, I jest. Handling the dreaded guest list “cull” requires tact. First you’ll need to figure out who you absolutely must have at your wedding. Start with you and your partner and circle out until you reach the current maximum. Afterwards, create tiers and assign your guests to the A-List, B-List, C-List, etc (but for the love of Pete, don’t TELL them which list they’re on...unless you’re really finished with your relationship). Then it’s time to break the news. My preference is to have something pre-written and mail it out. If you want to leave things open-ended in case gathering numbers increase, have some information or lists on a website that will be updated in the days leading up to the ceremony. Also, consider having a live-stream of your ceremony so they can watch. And maybe drop off a bottle of wine to their door the day before - I know I always feel less hostile when someone gives me wine!

Dear River, My family is...tricky. Without getting into the details in case someone I know reads this and figures out who they are, I’m seriously worried that there will be some…”drama” between two of my extended family members. I want them both at my wedding but I’ll be really mad if their drama takes centre-stage. Any number of hiccups may arise on your wedding day, but one of the most ominous is the threat of family drama. No one wants Godzilla and Mothra - I mean Uncle Al and Cousin Tracey - to steal the spotlight on their special day. Let’s face it, every family has one or two (or several) people who just can’t seem to stand each other for a litany of reasons. Maybe someone didn’t invite someone else to their holiday gathering; maybe parents divorced on bad terms; maybe your brother and sister both fell for the same person and now can’t stand the sight of each other. With the bazillion tasks on your plate in planning your big day, is worrying about familial discord really something that needs to take up space in your brain? Well, yes and no. “Yes” because if you have a fear that the parties won’t be civil to each other, it should probably be dealt with ahead of time. And “no” because we’re all grown-ups here and can’t we just put our personal issues aside for the sake of one day? The best way to handle this is to sit down separately with each party and have a frank discussion. Keep it factual and non-biased; you don’t want either person thinking you’re siding with the other. Simply say “I know that you and soand-so don’t get along well. I don’t want to talk about why - that’s between you two. You are both important to us and we have invited you both to our wedding. I’m telling you now so that you can get used to the idea.” After that, come up with some simple suggestions to make things run smoother and assure them you will do what you can to keep them separated. Planning the seating arrangements ahead of time and discussing any planned photos with your photographer will help keep things calm. I mean, no one wants a keepsake photo of two people who hate each other smiling through gritted teeth. Also, make sure both people know that if they choose to attend your wedding they are solemnly swearing to keep their behaviour in check. If you are very concerned that the guests won’t listen to reason, you are within your rights to tell them that the choice is theirs; behave or don’t come. And hey, if the thought of managing preschool- ahem- relatives, makes your stomach churn, remember, you can absolutely ask your wedding planner to help handle this. If all else fails, call security. Kidding, kidding...kind of.
