Diese Entwicklung hat Fahrt aufgenommen: Stetig kommen neue Anwendungsgebiete hinzu, die Technik entwickelt sich rasant weiter.

Es lässt sich schneiden, fräsen, zu Furnieren schälen, verleimen, pressen, zu fast beliebig langen Bauteilen fügen und zu den unterschiedlichsXIR ,SP^[IVOWXSʲIR ZIVEVFIMXIR (MI :IVFMRHYRKIR zwischen den Elementen im Holzbau sind ebenso vielfältig und oft überraschend einfach in der Anwendung vor Ort. Auf der anderen Seite bietet die Bearbeitung durch computergesteuerte Maschinen ungeahnte Möglichkeiten im Hightech-Bereich, die völlig neuEVXMKI &EY[IVOI IVQ¹KPMGLIR ,SP^ MWX IMR &EYWXSʲ J¿V Experimentierfreudige.

Mit ȆȊǺ Produktion, ǻǾ Architekten, ȆȊǺ Engineering, Schlosser Holzbau und Pollmeier kamen fünf Partner zusammen, denen das Experimentieren im &PYX PMIKX 7MI EPPI FIʺRHIR WMGL QMX MLVIV %VFIMX ER HIV vordersten Spitze der Forschung und des Machbaren.

Sie sind es gewohnt, an den Grenzen ihrer jeweiligen Disziplin und Profession zu agieren – und einen Blick darüber hinaus zu wagen. Erst die Kollaboration dieser Partner hat mit dem neuen Schraubenwerk von ȆȊǺ Produktion ein Bauwerk ermöglicht, das den Einsatz von Laubholz auf die Spitze treibt. Gone are the days when wood was limited to residential projects or smaller public buildings; for some time now, industrial and commercial buildings have also been constructed from this renewable material. %X ʺVWX XLIWI [IVI SJXIR FYMPHMRKW GSRWXVYGXIH JSV XLIMV S[R YWI F] NSMRIV] SV GEVTIRXV] ʺVQW EGGYWtomed to working with wood, and who understandably sought to demonstrate the medium’s potential.

This development has since gained momentum, and new areas of application are constantly being added to the repertoire of timber construction as the technology rapidly evolves.

Timber construction proves more adaptable to change and innovation than other construction methods. On the one hand, this has to do with the diverse range of production, processing, and treatment methods that the material allows. It can be cut, milled, peeled into veneers, glued, pressed, joined into components of almost any length, and processed into a wide variety of wood-based building materials. The possible connections between individual components in timber construction are equally diverse and often surprisingly simple to implement SR WMXI -R EHHMXMSR GSQTYXIVM^IH QEGLMRMRK SʲIVW heretofore unimagined possibilities in the hightech sector, enabling completely new types of structures. In short, wood is a building material for those who like to experiment.

In the team of the production department of ȆȊǺ (hereafter ȆȊǺ Produktion), ǻǾ Architekten, ȆȊǺ )RKMRIIVMRK 7GLPSWWIV ,SP^FEY ERH 4SPPQIMIV ʺZI partners came together who have experimentation rooted in their corporate ǷȁǴ. All of these companies work at the forefront of research and consistently push the boundaries of possibility in their output.

They are accustomed to operating at the limits of their respective disciplines and professions – and daring to look beyond them. The collaboration of these partners is at the core of what made the new ȆȊǺ Produktion screw factory possible, a structure that pushes the use of hardwood to its limits. The BauBuche trusses are extremely delicate, the forces acting on them enormous, the wide spans bridged by the support structures impressive, and the joint techRSPSK] IPEFSVEXI TVIGMWIP] ʺXXIH ERH MRXIPPMKIRX

Um dieses Resultat zu erzielen, mussten alle Beteiligten auf ihrem jeweiligen Gebiet Spitzenleistungen anstreben und im selben Zug eng miteinander kooperieren. Darin spiegelt sich ganz direkt auch das Wirken von Firmengründer Reinhold Würth wider, der die Suche nach technischer Innovation, den Blick fürs Wirtschaftliche und kulturelle Teilhabe in sich vereint. Sehr engagiert brachte er sich in die Entwicklung der Halle ein. Es rundet die Geschichte wunderbar ab, dass sowohl die Hochleistungsschrauben als auch die statischen Berechnungen aus dem eigenen Haus stammen. Man merkt es diesem Holzbauwerk an, dass die Planung in sehr engem Austausch erfolgte und das gesamte Planungsteam Hand in Hand arbeitete: Stringenz, Präzision und Durchgängigkeit sind herausragende Merkmale dieser Konstruktion.

Doch die Innovation erfolgte nie als Selbstzweck.

Im Fokus der Bemühungen stand eine Produktionshalle, die eine optimale Nutzung erlaubt und den Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeitern einen möglichst angenehmen Aufenthalt bietet. Das Schraubenwerk der ȆȊǺ Produktion hebt sich jedoch nicht nur durch seine technische Innovation vom Standard der aktuellen Industriebauwerke ab.

Auch seine sorgfältige und konsequente Gestaltung ist einzigartig. Damit zeichnet das Projekt neben aller technischer Entwicklung eine bedeutende baukulturelle Leistung aus: Es versöhnt die Tradition des HolzFEYW QMX HIV 1SHIVRI (ERO HIV ʺPMKVERIR 4VSʺPI Ů sie fallen für diese Aufgabe sogar schlanker aus als bei ERHIVIR &EYWXSʲIR Ů IQER^MTMIVX WMGL HEW 1EXIVMEP von der Schwerfälligkeit und Gemütlichkeit, die ihm bisweilen anhaften. To achieve this result, all parties involved had to WXVMZI JSV I\GIPPIRGI MR XLIMV S[R VIWTIGXMZI ʺIPHW while at the same time ensuring close cooperation [MXL SRI SXLIV 8LMW HMVIGXP] VIʽIGXW XLI ZEPYIW SJ company founder Reinhold Würth, who was actively involved in the development of the hall. Throughout his professional life, he has combined the search for technical innovation with a keen eye for business and community engagement. The fact that the company itself both produced the high-performance screws required for the new hall and carried out the necessary structural calculations perfectly completes the building’s story. This timber structure clearly shows that the planning involved intensive collaboration, with the entire team working hand in hand together. Stringency, precision, and continuity stand out as the salient features of this construction.

Innovation, however, has never been an end in MXWIPJ %PP SJ XLI EJSVIQIRXMSRIH IʲSVXW [IVI JSGYWIH on creating a production hall that would allow optimal use and provide the employees with an agreeable working environment. This is where the properties of BauBuche as a building material truly come into their own: thanks to the combination of a small number of powerful supports with ingenious trusses XLEX FVMHKI PEVKI WTERW XLI LEPP SʲIVW TPIRX] SJ STIR space for production. The visually appealing and high-quality surfaces of the structure lend the factory a pleasant atmosphere. Finally, by using a renewable VIWSYVGI XLI WXVYGXYVI EPWS WIUYIWXIVW E WMKRMʺGERX amount of carbon dioxide.

It is not only its technical inventiveness, however, that elevates the ȆȊǺ screw factory’s new production hall above the current standard for industrial buildings. Its careful and consistent design is also unique. In addition to all of its technical innovaXMSRW XLI TVSNIGX EPWS HMWXMRKYMWLIW MXWIPJ EW E WMKRMʺcant architectural achievement, reconciling the tradition of timber construction with modern design.

Thanks to its delicate cross-sections, which are even slimmer than those that would be required if other building materials were used, the material frees itself from the stolid homeliness with which wood is often associated. It can no longer be denied: wood has entered the 21st century!

Die ȆȊǺ Schraubenwerk Gaisbach GmbH – Geschäftsbereich Produktion, im baden-württembergischen Waldenburg entwickelt seit mehr als fünfzig Jahren innovative und qualitativ hochwertige Schrauben.

Darunter sind auch Holzbauschrauben, die eine Zulassung im Bereich von Tragkonstruktionen in BauBuche – ein Furnierschichtholz aus Buche – besitzen.

Um ihr Know-how und das Einsatzpotenzial ihrer Produkte aufzuzeigen, baute das Unternehmen nun ein bemerkenswertes Vorzeigeprojekt – ihre eigene, ŬQu KVS¢I 4VSHYOXMSRWLEPPI QMX IMRIQ 8VEKwerk aus BauBuche, zusammengefügt mit intern produzierten Verbindungsmitteln.

BauBuche ist so leistungsstark, dass kaum ein Verbindungsmittel besteht, das die Kräfte in den Knoten zu übertragen vermag, ohne dass eine Vergrößerung der Querschnitte notwendig ist. Es scheint, als sei man diesbezüglich um ein paar Jahrzehnte zurückversetzt, als mit Nadelholz dieselben Probleme gelöst werden mussten. Damals waren bei der Bemessung von Tragwerken mehrheitlich die Schnittkräfte in den Knoten maßgebend. Versagen infolge Lochleibung bestimmte oftmals die Dimensionen der Träger. Ein großes Potenzial hin zu schlankeren Tragwerken lag brach. Forschung im Bereich der Verbindungsteile aus Stahl änderte die Dimensionierung von Tragwerken aus Holz. Ebenso ändern auch die aktuellen Entwicklungen bei Schrauben und StahlverbindungsQMXXIPR HMI 8VEK[IVOI EYW HIQ ,SP^[IVOWXSʲ &EY Buche.

GROSSES VOLUMEN FÜR DAS UNTERNEHMEN

Der Grundriss des 12 Meter hohen Baus erstreckt sich ¿FIV IMRI *P§GLI ZSR JEWX QEP 1IXIVR )MR HVIMgeschossiges Büro- und Ausstellungsgebäude schließt an der nördlichen Seite über eine Besucherpasserelle an das Volumen an. Dieser Steg führt in die Produktionshalle. Von dort gibt er den Besucherinnen und &IWYGLIVR HMI 7MGLX JVIM EYJ HMI 4VSHYOXMSRWʽ§GLI YRH damit auch auf das weitgespannte Tragwerk mit seiner ¿FIVVEWGLIRH ʺPMKVERIR ,SP^OSRWXVYOXMSR YRH WIMRIR großzügigen Oberlichtern, die den Innenraum prägen.

The production department of the ȆȊǺ Schraubenwerk Gaisbach GmbH in Waldenburg, BadenWürttemberg, has been developing innovative and high-quality screws for half a century. These include [SSH[SVOMRK WGVI[W GIVXMʺIH JSV YWI MR PSEH FIEVing structures made of BauBuche, a beech laminated veneer lumber. Demonstrating their expertise and the high potential of their products, the company LEW RS[ GSRWXVYGXIH E VIQEVOEFPI ʽEKWLMT TVSNIGX ER EHHMXMSREP ŬQƾ production hall whose supporting structure is built of BauBuche, assembled using fastenings produced in house.

Due its extremely high strength, structural assemblies made of BauBuche may be comprised of unusually slender and less numerous components.

However, hardly any fastening exists that can transmit the forces concentrated in the resulting complex connecting nodes without requiring larger crosssections. In this respect it is almost as if the clock has been turned back a few decades to when the same problems regarding the use of softwood for support structures had to be solved. At that time, the internal forces present in the connecting nodes usually played a decisive role in the design of load-bearing structural frameworks. Joint failure resulting from bearing stress often determined the dimensions of the beams. A great potential for slimmer supporting structures remained untapped. Research in the ʺIPH SJ WXIIP GSRRIGXSVW GLERKIH XLI HMQIRWMSRW SJ wooden structures. In the same way, current developments in the design of screws and steel fastenings are also changing the capacity of load-bearing structures made of the wood-based material BauBuche.

ABUNDANT SPACE

8LI ʽSSV TPER SJ XLI QIXVI LMKL FYMPHMRK I\XIRHW SZIV ER EVIE QIEWYVMRK RIEVP] F] QIXVIW % WITEVEXI XLVII WXSVI] FYMPHMRK LSYWMRK SʵGIW ERH showrooms stands to the north of the main structure, connected to it by way of an elevated visitors’ walkway which leads to the production hall. There, visitors have an unobstructed view of the producXMSR ʽSSV ERH XLYW EPWS SJ XLI ZEWX WYTTSVX WXVYGXYVI with its surprisingly slender wooden construction and the generous skylights which give the interior its distinctive character.

(MI ,EPPI [MVH ¹WXPMGL ZSR IMRIQ 1IXIV FVIMXIR 7IMtenbau mit Sozial-, Seminar- und AusbildungsräuQIR ʽEROMIVX %YJ HIV KIKIR¿FIVPMIKIRHIR 7IMXI WMRH auf einem halb so breiten Bereich die Technikräume angelegt. Beide aus Brettsperrholz hergestellten Gebäudeteile wirken aussteifend – der westliche als Riegel über die gesamte Länge, der östliche nur in speziell dafür ausgewiesenen Bereichen. Denn hier ist die Fassade mehrheitlich verglast und die Räume im Erdgeschoss werden zwischen den Treppenhauskernen mit jeweils einem mehr als 18 Meter weit spannenden Tragwerk überbrückt. Gebildet wird es aus einem zwei Geschosse hohen, parallelgurtigen Fachwerkträger mit markanten Zugstreben. Es zeigt die Möglichkeiten, aber auch die Grenzen von Tragwerken aus Nadelholz auf. Das Fachwerk besteht aus nur wenigen Tragelementen – den beiden Gurten, einem Mittelpfosten und zwei Zugstreben – und erscheint damit in seiner Maßstäblichkeit verwirrend klein. Die beiden Streben fangen den Mittelpfosten ab, und an diesem sind kontinuierlich Brettschichtholz-Platten verschraubt, die zwischen Kern und Mittelpfosten als scheibenartige Träger wirken und die Konstruktion als Wand erscheinen lassen – perforiert mit jeweils wenigen Durchbrüchen von bis zu rund 1,5 Metern Durchmesser, die zur Durchführung der Gebäudeund Versorgungstechnik zwischen Technikzentrale und Produktion dienen. Die Holzbalken der als Verbundkonstruktion ausgeführten Decken hängen mittels Schraubanschlüssen in den Wandscheiben, und die Kopplung der Streben untereinander beziehungsweise die Verbindung der Streben mit dem Pfosten erfolgt mit schräg verschraubten Stahlteilen. Die Fachwerke tragen die Lasten und strukturieren den Raum zugleich – mit der konventionellen Materialisierung an der Grenze des Machbaren. Über die verbleibende Hallenbreite von über 80 Metern spannen, jeweils paarweise angeordnet, sechs Parallelfachwerkträger als zweifeldrige Primärträger; die vierte Achse bildet die Trennung zum Drahtlager YRH FIWXILX EYW IMRIV &VERHWGLYX^[ERH 6Ŭ YRH einem parallel dazu angeordneten und über das tief liegende Dach mit der Wand gekoppelten siebten Hauptfachwerk.

A nine-metre-wide block housing seminar rooms, training facilities, and spaces for employees to soGMEPM^I ʽEROW XLI TVSHYGXMSR LEPP XS XLI IEWX [LMPI the technical facilities are housed on the opposite side of the hall, in an area only half as wide as the eastern block. Both these sections of the building are made of cross-laminated timber and also serve to brace the overall structure: the western block extends over the entire length of the production hall, while the eastern block only provides support in specially designated areas. Here the facade is largely GSQTVMWIH SJ KPEWW ERH XLI EVIEW SR XLI KVSYRH ʽSSV between the staircases are each spanned by a support structure more than 18 metres wide. This consists of a two-storey-high truss girder with prominent tensile braces, which illustrates both the possibilities and the limitations of load-bearing structures made of softwood. Each truss consists of only a few supporting elements (the two chords, a central post and two diagonal braces) and thus appears confusingly small in scale. The two braces support the central post, along the length of which panels of laminated timber are connected by screws. These both serve in a load-bearing capacity, and simultaneously allow the support structure to double as a wall, perforated F] E JI[ STIRMRKW YT XS QIXVIW MR HMEQIXIV XLEX allow the pipes housing the building technology to pass from the administrative area to the production ʽSSV 8LI FIEQW SJ XLI [SSH GSRGVIXI GSQTSWMXI ceiling are connected to these wall panels using screws, while the braces are connected to each other and to the posts with steel parts. The trusses support the building and at the same time structure the space, pushing the use of conventional materials to its limit.

Over the remaining hall width of over 80 metres, six parallel truss girders are arranged in pairs as double-span primary trusses; the fourth bay is JSVQIH F] XLI ʺVI VIWMWXERX [EPP 6Ŭ WITEVEXMRK the wire storage area from the rest of the hall, paired with a seventh main girder aligned parallel to this wall and connected to it by the recessed roof surface.

Die sieben Strebenfachwerke lagern mittig auf einer Stütze und auf den in die Kerne integrierten Randstützen, die mit den Wandelementen verschraubt und so gegen Knicken gehalten sind. Die Rand- und Mittelstützen sowie die Fachwerke sind aus BauBuche gefertigt, denn die entstehenden Spannungen in den Querschnitten würden die Festigkeiten von hiesig marktüblichem und bautechnisch geregeltem VollLSP^ EPWS WSPGLIQ HEW RMGLX EPW ,SP^[IVOWXSʲ KIJIVtigt ist, überschreiten.

Wie die 18 Meter weit spannenden Hängewerke sind auch die Hauptfachwerke aus BauBuche Tragund Raumstruktur zugleich. Denn die Dachhaut verläuft abwechselnd auf der Ebene der Ober- und der Untergurte. Die lotrechten Flächen innerhalb der Hauptträger können als Oberlichter genutzt werden, und das reduzierte Volumen vermindert den zu hei-

The vertical areas between the upper and lower chords accommodate window panes, and the reduced volume minimizes 60

Trapezoidal trusses arranged perpendicular to the length of the hall were therefore used for these areas of the roof.

Our eyes will surely become accustomed to them, just as the engineers involved in this project gradually learned to abstract and relativize the enormous forces operating at Meganewton scale the longer they worked with this building material in these dimensions. We can be sure that further such structures will be built, because the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages under a range of conditions: the light and slender construction saves resources and energy, particularly in the buildings in which it is installed.
