Das Engadin steht vor einem Generationenprojekt: 2022 sollen bei uns zum dritten Mal nach 1928 und 1948 olympische Spiele stattfinden. Skiservice unterstützt dieses Vorhaben, denn es blickt positiv in die Zukunft. Olympische Spiele sind Spitzensport, sie sind aber auch gelebte Gastfreundschaft und ein weltweit sichtbares Schaufenster für das Engadin. Die Spiele in St. Moritz und Davos dauern denn auch nicht nur zwei Wochen: Sie sollen ein Auslöser sein für zwei Jahrzehnte Entwicklung unserer Feriendestination.

The Engadin faces a generationspanning project: in 2022 the Olympic Games shall take place here for the third time after 1928 and 1948. Skiservice supports this plan, as it looks positively ahead. Olympic Games are synonymous for top-class sport but they are also about hospitality and provide the Engadin with a global presence. Thus, the games in St. Moritz and Davos go beyond the mere two weeks: they shall act as a trigger to develop further our holiday destination in the course of two decades.

Dieser Prozess hat schon begonnen: Kaum ein Tag vergeht, an dem wir hier oder ausserhalb des Engadins nicht auf dieses grossartige Projekt angesprochen werden. Egal, ob Befürworter oder Kritiker: Die Leute reden miteinander. Über das Heute und das Morgen. Über Gastfreundschaft und die Qualität von Dienstleistungen und Infrastrukturen.

The process has already started: hardly a day goes by when we are not confronted with this great project by somebody local or from beyond the Engadin. GIAN GILLI, MISTER OLYMPIA St. Moritz macht sich auf, ein grosses Ziel zu erreichen: Zum dritten Mal nach 1928 und 1948 sollen im Jahr 2022 in St. Moritz und Davos Olympische Winterspiele stattfinden. Sämtliche Disziplinen sollen in den beiden Bergorten ausgetragen werden. St. Moritz, Davos und das ganze Ferienland Schweiz sollen durch die Olympischen Spiele entscheidende Impulse erhalten, um die Qualität ihrer Infrastruktur zu verbessern. Skiservice hat den Leiter des Projekts getroffen, den Engadiner Gian Gilli (53). Herr Gilli, üblicherweise werden die Spiele in einer Grossstadt durchgeführt – nur die Schneesportarten finden in den Bergen statt. Haben Olympische Spiele in den Bergen überhaupt Platz? Genau das haben wir uns auch gefragt. Wir haben nun sehr detaillierte Abklärungen getroffen und die Antwort ist «Ja». Sowohl die Unterbringung der Mannschaften wie auch die der vielen Tausend Gäste, Helfer, Medienschaffenden und Sicherheitsleute sind machbar. Ein Knackpunkt sind die Mobilitätskonzepte. Weil wir voll auf Bahn und Busse setzen, werden wir aber auch das schaffen. Die Olympischen Spiele sind ein Auslöser, um das Verkehrssystem in unserer Region zu verbessern – das Engadin wird besser erreichbar. St. Moritz und Davos gehören zu den weltbesten Wintersportorten. Wo wollen Sie da noch die Infrastruktur verbessern? Wir investieren nicht in Quantität, sondern in Qualität. Die Olympischen Spiele werden dazu beitragen, dass wieder mehr in die Hotellerie des Engadins investiert wird. Dann werden wir unsere Sportanlagen auf den neuesten Stand bringen: Die Skisprungschanze wird neu gebaut, die Skirennstrecken und unsere Bobbahn werden technisch erneuert und das Oberengadin bekommt endlich eine Eishalle. Ein neuer Bauboom im Engadin? In unserem Konzept für das olympische Dorf ist ein neues Hotel in St. Moritz Bad vorgesehen. Aber der Fokus liegt auf der Erneuerung bestehender Hotels. Ich hoffe, dass viele Private mitziehen und ihre Betriebe renovieren. Bauten, die nach Olympischen Spielen nicht mehr gebraucht werden, machen immer wieder negative Schlagzeilen. Wie wollen Sie nach den Spielen 2022 solche Ruinen verhindern? Unser Projekt stand vom ersten Tag unter dem Zeichen der Nachhaltigkeit. Dazu gehört, dass wir bei jeder Anlage genau prüfen, ob sie nach den Spielen langfristig gebraucht wird und ob man sie finanzieren kann. Wenn das nicht der Fall ist, wird sie nur temporär gebaut und nach den Spielen wieder demontiert. Ruinen wird es nach unseren Spielen keine geben.

Wie reagiert die lokale Bevölkerung auf das Vorhaben? Ich treffe fast jeden Tag neue Leute, die uns unterstützen wollen. Sie sehen, dass unser kleines Bergdorf nach 1928 und 1948 jetzt wieder die Chance bekommt, Gastgeber eines Festes von globaler Bedeutung zu sein. Die Olympischen Spiele in St. Moritz und Davos hätten eine weltweite Ausstrahlung; sie würden der Welt zeigen, wie schön das Engadin und wie schön der Sport in den Bergen ist. Die Chancen waren noch nie so gut wie heute! Wir von Skiservice sind begeistert von der Idee und Ihrem Elan! Wie reagiert der Rest der Schweiz? Wenn wir kandidieren, wird die ganze Schweiz hinter uns stehen. Die Olympischen Spiele sind ein nationales Projekt und vor allem ein Projekt mehrerer Generationen! Wir planen weit über die zwei Wochen im Winter 2022 hinaus – die Spiele sind einfach der sportliche und emotionale Höhepunkt. Wir können etwas aufbauen, von dem auch unsere Kinder und Enkel noch profitieren können! Was bedeutet Ihnen das Projekt persönlich? Ich liebe es, für die Jugend, den Sport und die Zukunft zu arbeiten. Die Begeisterung nimmt immer mehr zu; bei mir selbst, aber auch bei den vielen Menschen, die ich täglich treffe. Wer sind die anderen Bewerber für die Winterspiele 2022? Im Moment erwarten wir Bewerbungen aus Oslo, Lemberg (Ukraine), Barcelona und vielleicht München. Möge die beste Stadt gewinnen!

GIAN GILLI, MISTER OLYMPIA St. Moritz sets out to achieve a great goal: after 1928 and 1948 the Winter Olympics shall take place in St. Moritz and Davos for the third time. All events shall be staged in one of the two mountain villages. St. Moritz, Davos and the whole of Switzerland as a holiday destination shall gain important impulses from the Olympics to improve quality and infrastructure. Skiservice has met up with the Engadin Gian Gilli (53), manager of the Olympia project. Mister Gilli, usually the Games are held in a big city – only the snow sports take place in the mountains. Do the mountains actually provide the necessary space for the Olympic Games? That’s exactly what we asked ourselves too. Since then we have made detailed evaluations and the answer is “yes”. Accommodation for the teams as well as for the many thousands of aides, guests, media representatives and security guards is feasible. The crucial point is the mobility concept. Since we fully focus on train and bus transport we will make sure we manage that too. The Olympic Games are a trigger to improve the traffic system in our region – the Engadin becomes more accessible. St. Moritz and Davos are among the world’s best winter sports resorts. Where would you want to enhance still further the infrastructure in places such as these? We are not investing in quantity but in quality. The Olympic Games will ensure further investment into the hotel business in the Engadin. Besides, we will update our sports grounds according to the state of the art: the ski-jumping hill will be newly built, the ski runs and our bobsleigh run will undergo a technical renewal and the Upper Engadin finally gets its very own ice rink. A new building boom in the Engadin? Our concept for the Olympic village includes a new hotel in St. Moritz Bad. But the focus lies on renewing existing hotels. I hope many private owners will join us and renovate their businesses. Buildings that aren’t needed anymore after the Olympic Games make the headlines again and again. How do you want to prevent these sort of ruins after the Games of 2022? From day one our project focused on sustainability. This

implies that we carefully evaluate every facility regarding its use after the Games and its financial feasibility. If the result is negative, it will be erected temporarily and dismantled after the Games. There will be no ruins after our Games. How do the locals react to the project? Almost everyday I meet new people, who want to support us. They are well aware that after 1928 and 1948 our small mountain village once again gets the chance to host a sports event of global importance. The Olympic Games in St. Moritz and Davos would have a worldwide impact; they would show the world the beauty of the Engadin and the beauty of sports in the mountains. GÖTTERSITZ - DER KLEINE HÜGEL Woran denkt man wohl, wenn jemand vom „kleinen Hügel“ spricht? Kaum an einen Berg, der sich 2456 Meter über Meer erhebt. Dennoch ist „kleiner Hügel“ die deutsche Übersetzung des rätromanischen „Muottas Muragl“. Der „kleine Hügel“ ist der Hausberg der Samedaner und wegen seiner kulinarischen Wohltaten und seiner Aussicht ebenso beliebt wie als Ausgangsort für Schneeschuhwanderungen und atemberaubende Fahrten auf der rasantesten Schlittelbahn der Region. Die Erschliessung des Muottas Muragl für eine breitere Öffentlichkeit nahm 1907 mit der Jungfernfahrt zum Gipfel seinen Anfang. Als damals, am 8. August, die erste Standseilbahn Graubündens den Aussichtsberg hinaufratterte, waren die Passagiere Zeugen einer technischen Meisterleistung. Über eine 2201 Meter lange, waghalsige Schräge und eine Neigung, die zeitweise 56% betrug, brachte sie erstmals eine Bahn zum „Göttersitz“ hinauf. Hier belohnte sie eine atemberaubende Rundumkulisse und ein auf Sommerbetrieb ausgerichtetes Berghotel für ihre mutige Unternehmungslust.

Nach etwas mehr als einem Jahr und einer Sommersaison, die hinter den Erwartungen zurückgeblieben war, stand das Berghotel ab Winter 1908/09 auch Skifahrern offen. Seither sind mehr als 100 Jahre vergangen. In dieser Zeit musste sich das Berghotel wieder und wieder neu erfinden, um sich gegen die wachsende Konkurrenz im Tal und auf andern Engadiner Gipfeln behaupten zu können. Und stets begegnete es diesen Herausforderungen mit Erfolg. Im Jahr 2010 schliesslich wurde das Berghotel auf diesem vielleicht schönsten Aussichtspunkt des Engadins komplett renoviert. Dabei entstand das erste Plusenergie-Hotel im Alpenraum.

Der Muottas Muragl ist ein „kleiner Hügel“, der zu ausgedehntem Verweilen einlädt und der diese Möglichkeit dank des Romantik Hotels auf Wunsch auch bietet. 16 individuell eingerichtete Arvenholz-Zimmer mit WC, Dusche und/oder Bad stehen zur Auswahl. HOME OF THE GODS - THE SMALL HILL What does one think of when someone talks about “the small hill”? Probably not a mountain that reaches 2456 m above sea level! And yet that is in fact what the Romansch word ‘muotta’ means. Muottas Muragl is Samedan’s local mountain and is much appreciated for its outstanding views and culinary delights, as well as being an excellent place from which to set off on snowshoe hikes and breathtaking excursions on the fastest toboggan run in the region. Muottas Muragl first became accessible to a wider public in 1907, following the maiden voyage of the first funicular railway in the Grisons on 9th August. As the carriages rattled their way up the mountain, those first passengers were witnesses of a technical masterpiece. A recklessly steep railway track, 2201 metres long, with a gradient of as much as 56% in some places, brought them for the first time to the ‘home of the gods’. At the summit these intrepid adventurers were rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic scenery and a mountain hotel equipped to cater for visitors during the summer season. A little more than a year later, following a summer season that had not quite come up to expectations, the mountain hotel opened its doors to skiers during the 1908/09 winter season. Since then more than one hundred years have passed, a time in which the hotel has continuously had to come up with new ideas to keep up with competition in the valley below and elsewhere amid the summits of the Engadin. Over and over again these efforts have met with success and now, with its complete renovation in 2010, this wonderful building - situated in what is perhaps the most attractive vantage point in the Engadin - has been transformed into the first “Plus Energy” hotel in the Alps. Built to conform to the latest technical developments in sustainable energy, the Romantik Hotel Muottas Muragl and its two restaurants are both visually and gastronomically pleasing. In perfect harmony with the spectacular panorama, guests will find a rich choice of culinary possibilities to suit their various requirements. CORVIGLIA FLOWTRAIL

Mountainbiker erwartet seit diesem Sommer ein neues Highlight auf der Corviglia: ein Flowtrail mit Steilwandkurven und Wellen vom Feinsten. Neigungen von acht bis 12 Prozent machen die Abfahrtstrecke für jeden Biker fahrbar. Der Trail orientiert sich an amerikanischen Vorbildern und wurde von einem eigens dafür aus den USA eingeflogenen IMBA-Trailbauer konzipiert und von einem einheimischen Team gebaut. Die 4,6 km lange Strecke, die nie ihren Flow verliert, führt von der Corviglia nach Chantarella und überwindet dabei insgesamt 477 Höhenmeter. Der Trail führt über Bergwiesen mit Edelweissen und Murmeltieren und an Jahrtausende alten Dolinen vorbei in den Wald. Dabei gewährt er atemberaubende Ausblicke auf die Engadiner Seen und Berge. Entsprechend ausgerüstet, eignet sich der Corviglia Flowtrail für jeden geübten Biker. Je schneller er gefahren wird, desto anspruchsvoller wird er, so dass auch Profis auf ihre Kosten kommen. Egal, ob man schnell oder etwas langsamer unterwegs ist, ein breites Lachen im Gesicht ist garantiert. Since this summer mountain bikers can enjoy a new highlight on the Corviglia: a flow trail with banked curves and whoops of the best. Inclinations of eight to 12 percent guarantee that the trail can be tackled by every biker. Constructed along the lines of American trails and built by a local team, it was designed by an IMBA trail builder, who was flown in from the States specifically for this purpose. The 4,6 km long route never looses its flow and leads from the Corviglia to Chantarella and overcomes a total of 477 metres in altitude. It leads through mountain pastures with edelweiss and marmots and along thousands of years old dolines into the woods. Thereby the trail offers breathtaking views onto the Engadin lakes and mountains. Accordingly equipped, every experienced biker can enjoy the Corviglia Flowtrail. Dennoch sind Engagements gerade in unsicheren Zeiten nicht selbstverständlich, ganz besonders, wenn es dabei um Bereiche wie die Nachwuchsförderung geht. Skiservice Corvatsch engagiert sich seit Jahren in Form von Sponsoring für junge Skirennfahrer. Ausschlaggebend für die Förderung der einzelnen Nachwuchstalente ist nicht allein ihr Erfolg, sondern auch ihre Persönlichkeit. Conradin Conrad weiss aus eigener Erfahrung, wie viel Aufwand und absolute Hingabe der Skisport dem Einzelnen abverlangt. Ein ebenso grosses Anliegen ist es dem Familienunternehmen, dass Kinder, die sonst aus finanziellen oder gesellschaftlichen Gründen nicht die Möglichkeit dazu hätten, die Freuden des Wintersports erleben können. It doesn’t come as a surprise that a company with the word „ski“ in its name supports ski sport. Nevertheless, commitments can’t be taken for granted, especially in uncertain times and when it comes to promoting the young. Skiservice Corvatsch has been committed to sponsoring young ski racers for years. The funding of the individual up-and-coming talents is determined not only by their previous success but also by their personality. Conradin Conrad knows from his own experience how much effort and dedication ski sport demands from each of them. Therefore it is important for Skiservice Corvatsch to support the up-andcoming athletes on this challenging journey. Currently the company supports Nico Caprez from Silvaplana (born 1991) and Vanessa Kasper from Celerina (born 1996), members of the National Centre of Performance Ski Alpine East, as well as Sebastian Fiol from St. Moritz (born 1998) and Sina Conrad from Pontresina (born 1998), members of the regional pool. AIRPORT - SAMEDAN Die Geschichte der Fliegerei im Engadin reicht bis ins Jahr 1909 zurück. Damals begannen kühne Flugpioniere aus England und Deutschland den St. Moritzersee als Versuchspiste zu nutzen. Zehn Jahre später setzten die beiden Schweizer Alfred Comte und Walter Mittelholzer einen weiteren Meilenstein und landeten ihr Flugzeug vor den Augen eines staunenden Publikums erstmals auf einem Feld neben dem Inn. Es war die Geburtsstunde des späteren Engadin Airport in Samedan. Bald darauf wurden Verhandlungen mit der Gemeinde und dem Verkehrs- und Verschönerungsverein von Samedan geführt und es kam zum Bau eines Flughafens. Das Engadin hatte ein neues Tor zur Welt. Eine neue Ära in der Geschichte des Flughafens begann mit der Gründung der Flugplatzgenossenschaft Oberengadin 1936. Zwei Jahre später konnte der Flugplatz Samedan für den Winterbetrieb freigegeben werden, und bereits im Februar 1938 setzte eine 14-plätzige DouglasMaschine in Samedan auf. Damit war es einer illustren Gästeschar nun endgültig möglich, jederzeit schnell und komfortabel ins Engadin zu reisen. Fast zur gleichen Zeit entdeckten Segelflieger die einmalige Attraktivität des Oberengadins für ihren Sport. Als Folge davon war Samedan 1948 Austragungsort der ersten internationalen Segelflugkonkurrenz und von da an unter Segelfliegern weltbekannt. Es war der Beginn einer grossen Liebesgeschichte, die bis heute andauert und zahllose passionierte Segelflugpiloten ins Engadin zieht. Mit zunehmender Beliebtheit und Frequenz wurde der Engadin Airport Samedan über die Jahre sukzessive ausgebaut und den neusten Entwicklungen angepasst. Auch für die REGA, die Schweizerische Rettungsflugwacht,

ist der eidgenössisch konzessionierte Flughafen von grosser Bedeutung und dient seit 1976 als Engadiner Einsatzbasis. Ob Rettungs-, Geschäfts-, Aussichts- oder normaler Passagierflug: Heute verzeichnet der ganzjährig betriebene und höchstgelegene Flughafen Europas rund 20‘000 Flugbewegungen jährlich. Er kann von allen Flugzeugkategorien bis hin zum mittelschweren Jetflugzeug angesteuert werden. Für die nötige Sicherheit aller sorgt dabei nicht zuletzt die Regelung, dass alle Piloten, die diesen besonderen Flughafen anfliegen wollen, erst ein obligatorisches Briefing und je nach Kategorie des Flugzeugs auch einen Einweisungsflug unter Aufsicht absolvieren müssen. Vor über 70 Jahren von Privaten gegründet, hat sich der Engadin Airport in Samedan seither zu einem wichtigen volkswirtschaftlichen und touristischen Faktor von öffentlichem Interesse entwickelt, der auf eine reiche Geschichte zurückblicken kann. Unser grosser Dank geht an die Engadin Airport Samedan AG für die hochprofessionelle und freundliche Unterstützung und die ausserordentliche Hilfsbereitschaft, mit der sie uns beim Fotoshooting zur Seite stand.

SAMEDAN - ST. MORITZ

AIRPORT - SAMEDAN The Engadin history of flying reaches back to 1909. In those days some bold aviation pioneers from England and Germany started to use the frozen Lake St. Moritz as a trial runway. Ten years later two Swiss pilots, Alfred Comte and Walter Mittelholzer, set another landmark when they landed their airplane on a field next to the river Inn, witnessed by an amazed crowd. It was the hour of birth of what would once become the Engadin Airport in Samedan. Soon afterwards negotiations with the municipality and the “Samedan Tourist and Beautify Association” started and an airport was built. The Engadin had a new gateway to the world. The founding of the “Oberengadin Airport Cooperative” in 1936 marked a new era in the history of the airport. Two years later the airport was given the “all clear” for winter operation and shortly afterwards, in February 1938, a 14 seat Douglas touched down in Samedan. From then on an illustrious crowd was free to travel comfortably to and from the Engadin at any time. Almost at the same time glider pilots discovered the unique appeal of the Upper Engadin for their sport. As a result Samedan was the site of the World Gliding Championship in 1948 and henceforth a worldwide known Mecca for gliders. It was the beginning of a love affair that is still going strong and brings countless passionate gliders to the Engadin. In keeping with the growing popularity and number of flights, the Engadin Airport Samedan was gradually expanded and permanently adjusted to the latest state of the art. The federally licensed airport is also of great importance for the REGA, the Swiss Air-Rescue, and has been used by it as its Engadin base since 1976. Whether rescue, business, sightseeing or everyday passenger’s flight: today Europe’s highest and year round operated airport logs approximately 20‘000 flights per year. It can be used by aircrafts of all categories, up to a medium jet (e.g. Boeing 737 BBJ). Safety is prerequisitive and secured last but not least by the regulation that every pilot who wants to touch down at this special airport first has to complete a mandatory briefing and, depending on the category of the aircraft, a familiarisation flight under supervision. Privately founded more than 70 years ago, the Engadin Airport Samedan has ever since been a relevant economic and touristic factor of public interest that can look back on a rich history.
