Project 2 Exp A&B

PROJECT 2 DESIGN PHYSIOLOGY INDN 252 Project two builds upon Project one and challenges you to apply a physiological design approach to an area of interest. In Exp 2A you will define and propose and idea, leading to Exp 2B where you will engage in developing this as a fully functioning physiology inspired object. A tumblr site must be utilised by each student throughout project 2 and the experiments to document, comment and present your approach see (http://www.tumblr.com/ )

EXPERIMENT 2A: ACTIVITY & PROPOSAL 10% Part 2A, quickly explores how people dynamically interact with products and the environment. This experiment engages your senses, physiology and psychology from a macro viewpoint and a position of reflection before you begin your final project, ‘the second skin’.

TASK Participate in the group experiment. Read through the brief for Experiment 2B ‘the second skin’ and develop a subject or area of interest that shows potential for a design inquiry (this is quite separate from the group activity). Limitations exist on what may be attainable in the timeframe including the technologies and methods. Record your ideas as notes, photos and sketches (note: photos must be of only you and your classmates). Think of where your design interest’s lie, rather than trying to solve a problem look past this to the relationship between body and material ‐ physiology and artefact ‐ people and activity. Select carefully and avoid ‘cognitive heavy ‐ technology’, pragmatism and assumed or simplistic problems. Endeavour to find an opportunity for experimentation that allows conceptual thinking, rigorous process, digital making and use of your rich imagination.

SUBMIT: FRIDAY 16TH SEPTEMBER 9:30AM A design proposal for ‘the second skin’ communicating your first ideas; this may consist of images, sketches, text etc and must demonstrate design language and ‘stand alone’ communication rather than just showing ‘googled images’. Guides: • Situation, is it an existing product or an conceptual experiment • Interaction, how may it connect with the body • Experiment, what direction will you take to get started Main issues to consider: • Capability of context, examination and experimentation to reveal information • Relevance and potential of dynamic products • The interrelationship between ergonomic ideals, performance requirements and aesthetic desires. Assessment Criteria: • Application of Design physiology (Is it human focused) • Craft in communication of ideas (i.e. graphics, composition, imagery)

EXPERIMENT 2B:

THE SECOND SKIN 35%

The application of physiology ‐ in the design and development of an object through experimentation. 1 Project 2 ‐ INDN 252 Design Physiology 2011

Part 2B, explores the human response; the application of design physiology in the design and development of an object/artefact. You will be required to re‐interpret a product/activity utilising experience from experiment 2A. To effectively test your concept you will be required to build a fully functioning and accurately feeling test rig or range of experiments. You will be designing both the object and method of testing to substantiate your hypothesis. This will include the development of relevant scenarios and placement within applicable environments. As INDN 252 has students from a range of courses bring your specific discipline to the fore.

PROCEDURE Refine your proposal from Exp 2A. You may need to further your investigation, or start over to clearly specify which particular areas you wish to concentrate on, i.e. full or partial body activity. Make sure that you are able to evaluate and test your ideas with the facilities and time available, be careful not to select a simplistic or massively complex object or interaction. To physically evaluate a broad range of ideas you will need to develop methods of quickly mocking‐up your designs. Wherever possible produce working prototypes to reduce the amount of speculation and assumption. Record the testing and evaluation method using photographs and video, making sure that you draw defendable conclusions from each test (post this progress on your tumblr). Develop a list of design criteria, proposed areas of potential exploration and a project timeline. Evaluation: Throughout your design process you will be carrying out evaluations of your various design ideas to prove or disprove their value. This progress is required at every studio session. Your final design must be rigorously evaluated to substantiate, value and ascertain what you have achieved. Your final outcome must be fully functional and tactilely accurate.

SUBMIT: TUESDAY 14TH OCTOBER 9:30AM Final Design Presentation: Present from your Tumblr site Present working prototypes, methods of testing and related conclusions. 1. Fully functional tactile model/exploration/range of experiments 2. Documentary defence: Duration 2‐3 minutes. Main issues to consider: • Physiology as a design methodology • Potential for design physiology to explore, inform and improve architecture and design. • Method of defining the scope of the study. • The interrelationship between ergonomic considerations and aesthetic desires. • Limitations of physical testing methods. • The effect of limited adjustability and the need to get one size to fit all • Methods of collecting and analysing information. • Validity and accuracy of the proposed testing methods and related conclusions. Assessment Criteria: 1. Understanding of situation/product/environment in human working relationship 2. Methodology for critical analysis testing and evaluation 3. Fully functional conclusion and potential for further research 4. Communication in presentation and sensitivity in choreography 2 Project 2 ‐ INDN 252 Design Physiology 2011
