Creating Landscapes That Inspire

An Interview With Arianne Huene

From the saturated and mossy temperate rainforests of Vancouver Island, Arianne Huene grew up surrounded by the beauty of nature. Today, Arianne is the owner and Principal Designer at Arianne Huene Landscape Design, based in Comox, British Columbia, Canada. In an interview with Arianne for Design Online, she shared the story of her journey into the landscape design industry.

After completing her training at the Pacific Horticulture College in Victoria, British Columbia, in 2006, she started working as a self-employed landscaper, focusing on residential landscape maintenance. As she gained experience, she started taking on more design and installation projects. In 2012, she exclusively specialized in landscape design, focusing on residential landscapes.

“I fell massively in love with the green, growing things that surround us daily,” Arianne said. “Growing up in the saturated and mossy temperate rainforests of Vancouver Island, there was an otherworldly quality to the plants around me. I wanted to evoke that same feeling in my own backyard. Designing gardens evolved naturally from my love of nature and the wonder I feel towards our rugged local landscape.”

Arianne’s love for nature and her passion for designing gardens have driven her to improve her landscaping acumen. She is dedicated to staying at the forefront of the industry, taking advantage of a wide range of online continuing education webinars, including new perennials, American prairie style, permaculture, native species, dry gardening, and more. She also actively embraces and incorporates the latest design technologies, such as 3D landscape renderings, into her work.

As the Principal Designer at Arianne Huene Landscape Design, Arianne maintains a homebased private practice. She enjoys collaborating with landscape contractors, home builders, and architects to create unique residential landscapes and gardens. Her solid rooting in maintenance allows her to better envision the maturation and lifespan of the gardens she designs and hone in on a garden’s maintenance requirements.

“I have the good fortune to design a wide range of landscape styles and revel in a dazzling diversity of plants, focused on and creatively constrained by the design criteria inherent in every project.”

She has also organized a group of women leaders in the local landscape industry. With her leadership, these trailblazing women meet to uplift, motivate and empower one another through the exchange of innovative business ideas and fruitful collaboration.

She noted that Instagram has been a wonderful funnel of information, certainly providing inspiration and creative ideas, but also highlighting professional connections within different organizations and companies.

Design Online - June 2024

“I enjoy my daily Instagram dose of crisp hardscapes, innovative planting techniques and thoughtful tips and tricks for the garden,” she said. “I’ve been searching for a professional organization to find a community within, and it is through Instagram that I found APLD.”

When asked about the biggest industry-related change or challenge she’s seen over the years, Arianne said, “Certainly, climate instability poses serious problems for us all. In our region, we have traditionally had mild, moist summers and cold winters. Recent summer temperatures have scorched the West Coast, contrasted with winter atmospheric rivers bringing torrential rains.”

Despite the challenges posed by climate instability, Arianne remains committed to her love for nature and her passion for designing gardens. She continues to create unique and beautiful landscapes that evoke the otherworldly quality of the plants that surround us daily. Arianne remains committed to her craft and to creating beautiful landscapes that evoke wonder and awe in all who see them.

Stunning Serenity Gardens at the Kingfisher Oceanside Resort & Spa

Sometimes, it takes creativity and a sustainable approach to landscaping to realize a stunning vision.

Arianne Huene, a landscape designer known for her exceptional residential landscape designs, was commissioned to design the Serenity Gardens at the Kingfisher Oceanside Resort & Spa in Courtenay, British Columbia, in 2017. She worked with David Bossom, a water feature design and installation expert, to create a captivating garden in every sense of the word.

The garden is a perfect blend of texture, color, and tranquility. It is nestled between two wings of private rooms, overlooking the ocean and gardens. Winding pathways intertwine with naturalistic streams, which join at waterfalls into a large central pond. Eight niche patios, cozy with gas fire bowls, provide secluded spaces for guests to retreat and immerse themselves in the garden.

Arianne comments, “The gardens are designed to be restful and restorative for guests. The plantings are generous, and foliage color and blooms cascade through the seasons, from early spring bulbs, Bergenia ‘Flirt’,

Hamamelis ‘Diane’ to summer’s voluptuous jewel tones featuring Hemerocallis ‘Little Grapette,’ Agapanthus sp, rich Zantedeschia, Gentians, and Eucomis ‘Speckled Burgundy,’ finishing in the late hazy summer and autumn with Hydrangea ‘Quick Fire,’ Coreopsis ‘Moonbeam,’ Rudbeckia ‘Goldsturm,’ Echinacea ‘Ruby Star,’ Hesperantha coccinea.”

The gardens are not just visually stunning, but they also support local biodiversity. Airy ornamental grasses catch the coastal breeze year-round, providing gentle screening and privacy to the niche patios. Pollinators and birds are attracted to and reside within the gardens, feasting on insects, seed heads, and nectar. Arianne says about the pollinators, “Monarda and Lavandula ‘Hidcote’ are classic pollinator favorites, with Mahonia and other species providing winter nectar for bees and hummingbirds. The day we built the streams, the birds arrived to bathe: wondrous!”

Regular care and attention to maintenance curate a garden that blooms continuously from spring through fall, with winter’s sparkles to see guests through the darker days. Arianne adds, “In a project like this, the planting possibilities are seemingly endless, and combined with a slightly warmer micro-climate, we were able to push the boundaries to include some ‘exotic’ tender plants, including Cannas, Eucomis, Grevillea ‘Canberra Gem,’ Calistemon ‘Little John.’”

The Kingfisher Oceanside Resort & Spa is a well-known local favorite that brings in an international clientele. Many guests have expressed admiration and appreciation for the gardens, for which Arianne is eternally grateful and proud. She says about the project, “Working with colleague David Bossom and the generous vision of the resort owner was a privilege. I am proud of the Serenity Gardens and the positive impact they have on the guests and the local environment.”

Arianne’s Serenity Gardens at the Kingfisher Oceanside Resort & Spa is a testament to her landscape design expertise, creativity, and passion for creating spaces that are not just beautiful but also functional and sustainable.

Evolving Landscape Design With Technology

The landscape design practice is ever-evolving. Of course, not in the fundamental requirements from site inventorying to client presentation, but the mechanisms we use to accomplish those processes are evolving to be more intuitive.

Perhaps some of you recall a presentation my colleague Joe Salemi and I gave at the 2015 APLD conference on modernizing landscape design technology. Not even 10 years later, many of those recommended solutions have been made “out-of-date.” Whether the evolution is clientrequired, jurisdictionally mandated, or from our own desire to stay relevant, how we—as design professionals—inventory, analyze, conceptualize, plan, and execute projects continues to innovate.

Beyond tools within design software, expanded collaborative features within these platforms facilitate seamless file exchanges and communication among designers, contractors, and other stakeholders, fostering a more cohesive and efficient project workflow.

Technology can improve processes within landscape design in various scenarios. Site inventory, as one example, is a vital step for any site design project, and if you are already using design software, using available tech to establish a digital baseplan with existing conditions gives you a helpful jumpstart for your design.

And one of the groundbreaking technologies transforming site inventorying is photogrammetry. This method utilizes multiple photographs to generate highly accurate 3D models of objects or spaces. Photogrammetry creates detailed and realistic representations of existing conditions, enabling designers to visualize and document the environment with unprecedented accuracy and fidelity. Additionally, this allows users to physically walk around objects like boulders, trees, sculptures, furniture, and even people to capture detailed scans for use in your proposed design’s 3D model.

Similarly, point-cloud scanning has emerged as a powerful tool for capturing real-world locations in intricate detail. Using Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) technology, point-cloud scanning produces digital representations composed of thousands or millions of individual points, each with precise X, Y, and Z coordinates.

In the landscape design course I recently instructed at the Ohio State University ATI, our students used a Trimble scanner to capture the existing context on a historic property. They then quickly made use of the house, pavement, and vegetation captured to develop a footprint ready for their proposed landscapes. These point clouds serve as invaluable references for designers, providing comprehensive data for site analysis, modeling, and visualization.

It’s no secret that artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more prevalent and valuable, propelling the landscape design process into a new era of efficiency, creativity, and collaboration. Recently, the APLD Washington Chapter hosted a webinar on AI use in Landscape Design. In it, Peter Wigren inspired us by sharing how this technology allows designers to harness the computational power of AI to quickly generate illustrative concepts or refine images using their models or exported images. It also empowers designers to ideate and iterate with unprecedented speed and ease, enhancing the design process at every stage.

Even if you are looking for a gentle way of easing into using AI, the presenter recommended using a tool like ChatGPT to fact-find, knowledge-build, and see how quickly the technology can speed up what normally would take hours.

Though not as new as AI, Virtual reality (VR) technology is still advancing quickly, offering immersive landscape experiences that exceed “still” visualization methods. Even without VR headsets, designers and their clients can explore their projects in immersive VR environments, gaining valuable insights and perspectives. More importantly, VR technology enables designers to immerse themselves in their creations, facilitating better context and more informed decision-making during design development.

Next-generation technology transforms landscape design, empowering us with innovative tools and capabilities to push the boundaries of creativity and efficiency. From photogrammetry to point-cloud scanning and AI to virtual reality, design advancements are evolving the landscape design process, enabling sole-practicing designers to visualize, communicate, and execute their ideas with unprecedented precision and effectiveness, just like the larger design firms with whom they compete.
