NOVEMBER 2022

I

t's that time of year again, when our pulses are racing and our excitement levels are skyrocketing as the Design Middle East Awards 2022, will be held on November 11 at Sofitel The Palm Dubai. We can’t thank you enough for the overwhelming response, and we’d like to express our appreciation for your nominations in a variety of categories. The cover of this month's issue features a new nomadic luxury in Saudi Arabia's desert. The Banyan Tree AlUla resort in Saudi Arabia's Ashar Valley has been designed by AW2, a Paris-based international architecture and interiors studio led by Stéphanie Ledoux and Reda Amalou. The resort now has 47 new tented suites ranging in size from one to three bedrooms. Among the public areas are two gourmet restaurants and a luxury spa. The signature swimming pool is nestled in a natural rock crevice, resembling the Wadis that appear at the base of the cliffs during rainstorms. The result is stunning. Moving on, we have included KCA International's stunning The Penthouse project at The Address Beach Resort & Spa in Dubai. The interior design artistically conveys the ethos of a good and luxurious life by the sea. The neutral colours are enlivened by splashes of marine blues and green, evoking a beachy sensibility.

THE FITOUT raises the bar in sustainable interior design with its latest works at Residence Inn by Marriott

T

HE FITOUT has revealed its ongoing work for Residence Inn by Marriott with distinctive and sustainable interior fit-out solutions. The company also announced the completion of the Panorama Restaurant inside the Residence Inn, with an exemplary and well-crafted, sustainable decor. THE FITOUT is presently on constant efforts towards refurbishing the 489 rooms at the Residence Inn by Marriott, from floor to ceiling. The firm has successfully delivered approximately half of the project to the client while

the hotel is fully operational with customers enjoying all the amenities, despite the renovations being carried out. The detailed drawings executed by the firm are in accordance with the Marriott specifications and uphold the unique branding of the hotel. By setting high standards, the company is developing unique designs for the interiors of the hotel, which meets the evolving demand for innovative and state-of-the-art interiors in the hospitality industry. The hotel’s guest rooms will feature unique wall coverings imported exclusively from Italy and made with the finest materials and cutting-edge technologies. Likewise, the company also utilised high quality materials from Italy and cutting-edge technologies for the construction of 700sqm Panorama Restaurant’s interiors that is now completed. Designed in harmony with the overall theme of the hotel, the interior of the restaurant has a distinctive design that

blends modern architecture with previously employed sinuous curves and arches. The designs for the rooms and the restaurant have been created to suit the prime location at which it is located, offering its guests and diners a magnificent view of the seaside and DIFC. Sherif Nagy, general manager at THE FITOUT, said: “We have worked diligently to deliver impressive interiors at the Residence Inn, especially during the planning phases which requires more focus. We constantly made sure that we adopt sustainability measures in all the phases of construction, while developing this novel, Italianstyled interior that offers the warmth and comfort of a home to its customers. Our team has tried relentlessly to meet the evolving trends in the hospitality sector where every space strives to provide customers with contemporary interiors, unique concepts, and themes. Despite all the challenges, we have managed to deliver distinct and innovative designs at the Panorama restaurant and are looking forward to the same for the rooms of the hotel, once we complete the work.” The firm has implemented several sustainability measures both in the hotel and the restaurant, such as proper waste management and reuse of several materials without compromising on quality and standards, in order to ensure environmental safety. In addition, it has also ensured that substances that could harm the environment are eliminated during construction.

work. As a sustainability champion, GROHE is committed to caring for the environment and saving its precious water resources, one glass at a time. Since Dubai Can launched in February 2022, there has been a reduction in the usage of an equivalent of more than 3.5 million 500 ml single-use plastic water bottles. The goal is to create the world’s most visited and best place to live and work in, as envisaged by the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. GROHE, along with Media One Hotel management, will offer free still and sparkling water to the tower tenants and guests to drink and refill bottles for free. Up to 100 people are expected to use it daily. Additionally, GROHE has installed three GROHE Blue water systems in Media One restaurants and conference rooms for hotel guests. While this is the global leader’s first collaboration since joining the Dubai Can initiative, offices and homes across the UAE have enjoyed different versions of GROHE Blue water systems since 2009. GROHE commissioned the University of Göttingen to carry out in-depth research that made comparisons of CO2 emissions. The result: GROHE Blue delivers a huge reduction of up to 95% per litre compared to single-use plastic bottled water. It takes an astonishing 7 litres of water just to produce a single litre of PET-bottled water, not to mention the energy used and carbon emissions created in bottling, transportation, and distribution. The GROHE Blue installation in Media One is expected to inspire other hotels to reduce plastic bottled water consumption on their premises. GROHE’s goal is to support companies and individuals who want to switch to filtration systems, reducing or eliminating single-use plastic bottles. GROHE Blue has a simple and intuitive mechanism that carbonates drinking water at the touch of a button. The different lever variants enable deliciously chilled still, medium and sparkling water. An Ultrasafe filter, specially developed for the Region, improves the taste by removing solids and elements that affect flavour and odour, like chlorine; it removes 99.99% of bacteria, heavy metals like lead, microplastics and all this leaving behind all beneficial minerals in the water untouched.

His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai launched Dubai Can change mindsets in how the city’s residents and visitors view sustainability, starting the transformation at the individual level and then progressing to the level of community, city, nation, and beyond. NaughtOne unveils a compelling rebrand, reinforcing its core message that absolute simplicity leads to infinite possibility

n binary code, only two numbers are needed to unlock the bounds of possibility – zero (“naught”) and one. The foundation of the digital world hinges on the concept that the right pattern of zeros and ones can accomplish anything. Design brand “NaughtOne” was founded to represent just that— by offering simple yet specific ingredients that lead to a realm of infinite possibilities. Today, after nearly two decades of design, problem-solving and innovation, NaughtOne has unveiled its latest project celebrating that concept–this time though, the project was the brand itself. “The irony of simplicity is that it’s actually quite complex,” says Nadean McNaught, Managing Director at NaughtOne. “To design something—a space, a product, an approach—that demonstrates ‘less is more’ usually requires incredible insight, refinement, and conviction. The beauty of this dichotomy is what energises us to show through our brand how purposeful simplicity can result in creative freedom spaces need. Given NaughtOne’s continued growth and expansion over the last few years, we thought it was the perfect time to refresh our brand and reimagine that belief in new and exciting ways—the landscape has changed a lot over the past 17 years.” To better highlight the origins and inspiration of the company name, the brand is updating the previous

name “naughtone” to “NaughtOne” and adding a new logo (“O/1”). Over the coming months, further updates will include a complete overhaul of the NaughtOne website, social channels, packaging, brand standards, sales materials, approach to creative direction and more. “We are thrilled about all of it—but especially the logo,” says McNaught. “The logo was born from our desire to further amplify the vision and goals of NaughtOne. We wanted to provide a fresh symbol that highlights the conversation around why we exist and represents what we mean to the design world.” Since its founding in 2005, NaughtOne has designed and manufactured fundamentally versatile and beautifully simple furniture. Every idea, decision, and final product is centred on a genuine desire to connect people in meaningful ways, simply. The original collection began with products such as Hush and Trace and has now expanded to a portfolio of more than 46 products that includes tables, sofas, booths, loungers and more. Over the last 17 years, NaughtOne has expanded to become a globally recognised brand, while still maintaining the friendly, approachable nature NaughtOne was born. Maintaining accessibility, while continuing to expand globally is a key component of the rebrand. “One of the earliest hallmarks of our brand was our presentation of British sensibility within the realm design— an openness to experiment, solving functional human needs with a creative twist,” says McNaught. “We loved seeing how our brand’s playfulness, small beginnings, brightness, and ingenuity resonated across the world. With our updated approach to the NaughtOne brand, we can both represent that original philosophy while better incorporating some of the exciting ways we’ve matured as a brand over the last several years of expansion and growth.” Further highlighted in the rebrand is NaughtOne’s continued commitment to the earth. From the brand’s earliest days, sustainability has been prioritised throughout every step of the design process, beginning with creating products designed for longevity while minimising the amount of materials needed. This mindset led to the development of NaughtOne’s take-back program, product sourcing requirements, and most recently, the brand’s approach to circularity, especially as it relates to experimenting in the prototype phase of product development to ensure end-of-life recycling is as easy as possible years later. NaughtOne products are on display at the Herman Miller showroom in Dubai Marina.

The main floor of the Penthouse is located on level 75 and the 4m high ceilings in the entrance, majlis, show kitchen and dining area have a huge impact on the space and allows the guest full views of the sea allowing natural light to flood the rooms. Beige and taupe tones are the base for the accent shades of teal. Hard finishes include light timber wood panelling, dark furniture timber, contrasting dark metal accents and lightly coloured lacquered furniture. High-quality bookmatched stone is a continuing design language throughout the space on feature walls and countertops and the furniture style is modern and warm with an exciting mix of textures and colours, elegant high-end finishes, and details.

The master bedroom suite is located at the apex of the building's curve and features a large walk-in dressing area as well as a master bathroom with a free-standing bath, elongated double marble vanity, and 3D travertine wall tiles. The sheer size of the bathroom creates a spa-like environment in which guests can truly relax. The Penthouse continues to impress with an architectural double height volume from level 73 to 74 and is one of the main features in keeping with the scale and iconic nature of the building. This volume of space creates the ‘grand sense of arrival with a full view to the sea beyond and is designed to bring together the soft colour palettes and modern furniture pieces in a harmonious blend without detracting from the view.

Light-coloured marble and timber and dark metal accents relate directly to the modern building. The living room and show kitchen provide a large entertainment area highlighted with a book-matched marble feature wall in the living space extending 7m to the ceiling. With the addition of a loft space added above the show kitchen for a master bedroom suite with a walk-in dressing area and a large bathroom with a 2m wide freestanding circular bath, the Penthouse is the pinnacle of luxury living. The artwork in the Penthouse was carefully curated in collaboration with the art consultant, Ophelia Art. While the art in the main hotel is gentle and soft, the art in the Penthouse is more contemporary and bold. On level 73, two dramatic seascape paintings hang beside the cantilevered staircase, reflecting the changing nature of the sea below. Vibrant blues and greens are used on all of the canvases, and the overall style is a marriage of art and elegance, thanks to the addition of 3D sculptural resin and perspex installations.

The free-standing bathtub adds glamour and a majestic feel to the bathroom, making it the property's focal point.

HIGHQUALITY END

AZIZ ZACCA, founder and managing partner of Indoors High End

Finishing, talks about the ever-changing fit-out industry, current projects, and how technology and innovation contribute to the industry's growth. How do you see the fit-out industry evolving? The market for fit-out has been booming and growing with increasing intensity. This market has grown substantially specifically in GCC countries due to government investment and the presence of spectacular monuments in the region. Clients are currently looking for a persondesign-middleeast.com

The turnkey project is a new way of catering to a client’s needs; Having one team take care of everything from A to Z starting from the design all the way to the fit-out.

One of the most important trends for increasing market revenue is the penetration of advanced technology in the fit-out market.

AZIZ ZACCA is the founder and managing partner of Indoors High-End Finishing. He earned a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the prestigious American University of Beirut (AUB), which consistently ranks among the top engineering schools in the region and around the world.

In terms of technology, are there any particular technologies that you are working on that we should be aware of but are currently under the radar? home automation systems are very much in demand at the moment. With so much data emerging, designers and contractors can think more critically about how space is used and pursue bold new ways forward without the guesswork.

DESIGN MIDDLE EAST

What do you think is the most significant trend that will impact the future of the fit-out and design industry in the region over the next five years? The global fit-out market is changing with changing living standards, dynamic social environments, and growing economies. I believe that numerous technologies such as virtual designing, 3D rendering techniques, and others are becoming significant in the future of the fit-out and design industry. The Fit-out Market is adapting to digital solutions to enhance the quality of services and products to be delivered to the client in a fixed timeline. This way customers are being able to visually experience their project and products which will enhance the selection process before it comes to life and makes necessary changes. Thus, the penetration of advanced technology in the fit-out market is one of the most significant trends for raising market revenue. What kind of trends and tendencies do you see in the UAE fit-out market with digital transformation? I believe the high cost associated with fit-out technologies and solutions limits the market growth. Thus, contractors are focussing on providing modern technology fit-outs rather than digital transformation to cut down the expensive cost while maintaining high finishing standards. Clients have recently been integrating more technology into their spaces. Built-in sound systems, lighting systems, CCTV and

network login data, phone apps and sensors. Clients are adapting more to interacting with the space and with each other within it. We are also noticing big innovations in the lighting industry. Smart Lights for instance allow you to connect bulbs to mobile devices through Bluetooth. Mobile apps are then used to control them. These smart lights can perform a variety of tasks depending on the bulb. The demand for these smart light bulbs is increasing due to their energy management, convenience, and safety. Another one would be the advancements in LED technology. The department is making huge steps towards more efficient and longer-lasting LED lights to reduce lighting consumption by half, and even be a solution to climate change. Costs of LED lights are soon expected to fall as LED advances and becomes more common—making them more affordable to consumers. Finally, high-efficiency ballasts are making life more efficient. Manufacturers are trying to maximise energy savings and make ballasts more energy efficient.

What have been your key milestones and projects at Indoors High End Finishing? As a fit-out or contracting company, you are always growing. There are always more projects to undertake which is why project management is a huge part of a job, and without the proper organization, projects fall apart. The challenge is to balance growth and work quality as more doesn’t necessarily always mean better. The key elements to keep this balance are having a process for onboarding clients, decision making and project communication. Research lead times on materials, establishing deadlines and accountability, being properly staffed, and having a highly organised back office. This is what we focus on at Indoors

Over the past 10 years you must have seen a wide range of trends come and go, which trends were particularly memorable in your industry, and did you embrace them or let them pass you by? Trends are exactly that, limited in time. Over the years, we have indeed seen many come and go, specifically when it comes to preferred interior colours materials and fabrics. This is why we formed the company in the first place as we realized that there were very few fit-out companies producing high-quality work. We have worked on several residential, retail and commercial projects. W², the Paris-based international architecture and interiors studio led by Stéphanie Ledoux and Reda Amalou, has completed the design of Banyan Tree AlUla, a resort in Saudi Arabia's Ashar Valley. The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) appointed AW² in collaboration with the French Agency for AlUla Development (AFALULA). The resort is 15km from Hegra, the Kingdom's first UNESCO World Heritage Site. AW² design integrates and responds to Saudi Arabia's future ambitions as well as the resort's completely unique desert setting amid rock formations and ancient heritage sites, as guided by the Strategic Master Planning Guidelines for Alula and the Saudi Vision 2030. The design prioritises the preservation of the site's natural beauty and rich heritage while supporting the nation's long-term touristic, cultural, and economic goals for the region. >>>

How about tented suites? The resort has 47 new tented suites with sizes ranging from one to three bedrooms. Two gourmet restaurants and a luxury spa are among the public areas. guests to feel more connected to nature. Terraces extend from the interior spaces and are covered by a canvas tent. The bespoke furniture design reflects a sense of nomadic culture, with patterns inspired by Nabataean and traditional motifs used throughout to evoke Ashar's rich cultural heritage.

Throughout the resort, the spaces reflect a modern and elegant style that combines a rich local experience with the highest international luxury standards in hospitality design . Supporting nature and minimising the resort’s footprint Paths and walkways were designed as sand trails to emphasise the light touch approach used in the development of the vast site. Guests travel through a sand dunes landscape, getting closer to nature. The resort's footprint is thus reduced to a minimum, while the natural habitat of the site is preserved. The use of local resources, craftsmanship, and minerals reduces the project's carbon footprint even further. Local plants were implemented into the landscape of

the resort, a sustainable design choice focusing on endemic species native to the desert climate. The architects used water harvesting techniques to guide the rainwater towards micro-catchment gardens to support plant life on the site. The gardens also provide flood protection during the months of high rainfall when flash floods can occur in the region. Reda Amalou and Stéphanie Ledoux, partners at AW² commented: “Our architecture responds to the fragility of the Ashar site and aims not only to restore but also to protect it from future harm by consciously addressing the balance of Man and Nature.” “Our concept involves harnessing the natural beauty of the landscape with a project that seamlessly integrates into the site, a design that is adapted and adaptable to the cultural, historical and natural specificities of Ashar.”

Stay tuned for some exciting updates in Q4 of 2022. What are the challenges between a good concept design and a good final executed project and how do you manage them? There are several challenges that occur in the process of transforming a well-thought-out concept

design into a well-executed and completed final project. Even a brilliant concept could turn into a mediocre final product if the essence of a good design evaporates while going through the operations involved with design drawings, shop drawings, coordination with all different services, construction, quality control etc.

The only way to overcome all these risks involved, and to see a brilliant concept translated into an even better end product, is to watch, monitor, and fully manage every step of the 'blueprint to result' journey to enjoy an ultimate product that meets, and exceeds, expectations.

Product designer Aljoud Lootah launched her studio in 2014. Since then, the studio has preserved its unique approach by focussing on the idea of contrasts in form and function while distinctly interpreting the Emirati culture and artisanal techniques through contemporary design. Her creative drive comes from a passion for detail and experimental approaches to materials and aesthetics

he luxury Swiss watchmaking Maison Vacheron Constantin celebrates the opening of its flagship boutique in The Dubai Mall with an artistic collaboration with Emirati designer Aljoud Lootah. The multi-disciplinary designer created four creations that demonstrate the ultimate craftsmanship prowess that only human hands are capable of mastering. Vacheron Constantin has been striving for excellence in watchmaking since 1755. The Maison has built a legacy that is seen as a work of art in the eye of the beholder through the never-ending pursuit of precision, innovation, and artistry. The Emirati heritage craft of embroidery was chosen as a symbol of artistry and culture. It was used to emphasise the meticulous details, using carefully selected beads and traditional techniques to tell stories that leave a profound sense of legacy. >>>

xhibited throughout the flagship boutique, Lootah’s creations can be admired in the Atrium entrance, as well as in the three custom-built installations of the external windows. The four exclusive creations offer a unique interpretation of the brand’s annual theme, the “Anatomy of Beauty”. Lootah’s immaculate attention to detail showcases a clear link between meticulous watchmaking and perfection found in nature, using falcon feathers. She portrays watchmaking excellence through “Côte de Genève” and “Perlage” finishings of Vacheron Constantin. Timepieces and falcons have played a fundamental role in the history of the UAE, as they are symbols of pride and unity. The mesmerising colour palette selected by Lootah embraces the vibrancy of the region, emphasising the colours blue, gold and silver. For the designs, she envisions blue depicting the clear skies, gold resembling the sands dunes, and silver highlights that evoke UAE’s skylines. Each colour expressed through different materials and textures gives the creations more depth and meaning. “In celebration of the Vacheron Constantin Dubai Mall flagship opening, we are elated to embrace best-in-class Emirati talent, Aljoud Lootah. Through this artistic collaboration, we pay tribute to the community and show our appreciation for the fine arts. The four incredible creations infuse the new Flagship with

Emirati culture complementing the existing Musharabiye pattern and heritage timepieces exhibition. Inspired by Maison’s heritage and ultimate watchmaking excellence skills, Aljoud was motivated to passionately create her unique designs, which in turn will also inspire visitors at the boutique,” says Christophe Ramel, Middle East Regional Brand Director of Vacheron Constantin. Through this collaboration, Maison continues to encourage its commitment to the UAE and culture and art.

Some of the prestigious projects by Lootah include Dubai’s Mandarin Oriental Hotel, the Dubai International Airport, Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Airways, and the UAE’s Ministry of Presidential Affairs.
