CHEIF EDITOR´S NOTE

Designlabland passionately master the art to act smart and create designs that strengthen the county’s competitiveness. After four years of hard work many people in the county are aware of the importance of design strategies. We love to solve complex problems in diverse industries, from the mine, the forest and out in space.

What´s our motivation? To pedagogically visualize, get

people involved and feel: I want to be part in creating this! This is desirable, useful and sustainable! Luleå University of Technology and LKAB are planning to open a science building in central Luleå. But why don´t they invite the creative industries? We visited Norrköping Visualization Center (www.visualiseringscenter.se) during the Generator Conference for Cultural and Creative Industries. And that would be a perfect rolemodel for LKAB and University of Technology in Luleå.

Why? Because it is obvious that Norrköping have involved

designers/architects already in the process of planning. The Norrköping Visualization Center is a modern, exciting and engaging science house that attracts all kind of people regardless your in to technology or not.

WHAT IS JEWELS OF SWEDISH LAPLAND In this magazine edition No 9 we proudly launch the concept Jewels of Swedish Lapland - where the jewels are our young creative entrepreneurs. And these creatives loves to take action, create and pedagogically solve problems that our primary industries have. The mines, the forests, the wide landscapes and the authenticity are our source of inspiration. And space! Together with Spaceport Sweden Designlabland have worked with space as creative platform and created real cases of a forthcoming space collection. Because without strategical visualizations we will go from the mine and back– and never out in space.

MOODBOARDS- JEWELS

8 Curiosity cabinet- creepy and povocative...

9 with a raw north scandinavian touch.

WORKSHOP- JEWELS Participants:

Dlab Designteam; Johan Unga, Linda Backman, Sara Json Lindmark and Klara Nordstrรถm.

Place:

Maggi and Uffes place, in their carpentry workshop in Kyrkbyn Luleรฅ. Time: 7 Octobre 2011

Mission:

Create JEWELS together with the cabinet maker Uffe for the coming exhibition JEWELS Of Swedeish Lapland. And also experiment with new solutions of making JEWELS, both prototypes and ready to wear JEWELS. Action!: Creative power were flowing in the carpentry workshop! Uffe and Dlab Designteam made a splendid collaboration. Uffe sawed and gave us good advices. Dlab filed, sanded and drilled. The materials we used was wood, eco rubber and recyclable plexiglas (from The Cell) During the day we created heaps of brilliant and precious JEWELS. Maggi and Uffe invited us for lunch, yummy and rich spinach pancakes, homemade rhubarb chutney and pickled squash. Such a genuine taste experience!

10

The workshopday was not only filled with saw dust and beautiful JEWELS. We also received a lot of new inspiration. Maggi and Uffe, the hosts of the day are two lovely and super inspirational pensioners. For example: last year they cycled 1700 kilometers through India! Thats impressing. (Added to the time of writing they are now back in India on vacation.) Maggi and Uffe have lived in their house in Kyrkbyn, Luleü for 40 years. Their home is warm, personal and very tastefully decorated. Self-created furnitures and strange ornaments from their journeys are mixed up with artworks made by their children and grandchildren. We in The Dlab designteam felt honored to be in the artists artwork (Maggi and Uffes home) while the they passionately told us all about their live´s work. Unique and deeply inspiring.

DESIGNACTION! JEWEL THE MOVIE Mission/CASE

The concept Jewels of Swedish Lapland is built on the strategy to plant the thinking of our young creators being our regions “jewels and the future of a modern and exciting habitat.

Why a movie?

Today many of the big fashion and design brands choose the short movie broadcasted in social media instead of printed ads or fashion shows. So Dlab wanted to do some exciting laboratory work with the short film media.

The purpose of the concept / JEWELS traveling exhibition of Swedish Lapland

Creating an international knowledge of Swedish Lapland "jewels" in the form of young creators skills. The jewels presented in the form of an exhibit built by an innovative digital concepts created by a team of 3D VISUALIZER / animator, light-fashion-jewelry fashion designers, illustrators, artists, film makers, stylists, actors, musicians and others.

22

Result:

A short movie inspired from the classic fairy tail Snow White. In Dlabs version Snow White is played by the male actor Björn Elgerd. The evil witch is played by Kajsa Lindgren and the good space angel by Vanessa Martinez – both musicians in the innovative group Foil. The music in the short movie is Foils tune ”I’m not the only one”. The light designer John Öhman collaborated thight with the dedicated filmmaker Anders Grundström. In fourteen hard hours we managed to do all the filming. The producer (and illustrator/animator) Mattias Östling (www.svartalinden. se) got the difficult mission to post-produce and to make backgrounds to the filmed parts by creating animations and use still photos from places in Swedish Lapland of the photographers Per Lundström and Sanna Dahlén (www.designoir.se). The actual jewels are made at different occasions by different designers and collaborations. The styling is managed by Art & Fashion Director Linda Backman and every outfit, makeup and hair is uniquely made for the movie.

23

Laboration tests

Dlab have made some laborations in the film media earlier. The producer/filmmaker/light designer Andreas Matti did some more news inspired pieces. With his ability to make quick editing, and his long experience from the TV media, we made some informative and well designed pieces. But this time we wanted to work conceptual-and design all parts from storyboard to costume, and so on. This proved to be the most challenging mission we have done. Because it is so many parts that has to fit together. And the principle learning by doing proved to be very enlightening again. One problem we discovered is that expectations are overdimensioned to what the actual reality can offer. And we all create different pictures in our imagination. But we will continue to explore the film media in many different exciting ways. That is for sure.

EVENT CREATIVE SPACE @ DERTOUR ACADEMY ARENA ARCTICA KIRUNA World Premiere of space as a creative platform

The 25 of November was the premiere and opening of the exhibition Creative Space / Jewels of Swedish Lapland at Arena Arctica in Kiruna. Spaceport Sweden’s Managing Director, Karin Nilsdotter and a the Designlabland team of young creative professionals presented this first case of Creative Space called Jewels of Swedish Lapland. ”To take advantage of the interest and potential future of this industry does need new ideas and development of innovative experiences, services and processes to create sustainability and economic growth. Using space as a platform looking Spaceport Sweden creating innovative links with creative and cultural industries as fashion, events, films, food, advertising, art, games, health and environment,” -Karin Nilsdotter, CEO Spaceport Sweden

41

The goal of the “Creative Space is to create a node

in Swedish Lapland for the development of new services and experiences by combining entertainment, excitement and education and create a link that will strengthen regional and national growth. This to encourage entrepreneurship among academics and students, and create cooperation between business and academia on a international level.

Why did Designlabland choose space as a creative platform? Young creators moves from the county where the financial investments in the creative industries is negligible. Space has enormous appeal, regardless age, since it invites visionary and boundless creativity. Space also attracts innovations in the designprocess where the goal is to visually, ergonomically and pedagogically design new technology. The best exampel is Apple- but please let us create NEW exiciting and strategically important exampels! -Why not integrate technology in the bracelet Change or in the Nordic Light plexi-collection?
