Sustainable Philosophy:

We dig where we stand and use our local raw materials, skills and production channels.

Design Focus:

Interior design with high fashion level.

ACTION BY PASSION!

The name Designlabland is a combination of the words Design Laboratory in Swedish Lappland. Development Project Designlabland ran between 1997 – 2010. Then we managed to create good examples of strategic design solutions for companies and organizations in Norrbotten. Young designers were trained, with a unique event method, to become part of an emerging design market in northern Sweden. But the county is still very conservative and male-driven. Therefore we created the new project – Dlab on display. The aim is to support young creators to be professional and to educate organizations and companys to see the potential win-win in collaboration with designers. This will not work until the organizations and companys are willing to invest in creative small business. The strategy is to display different cases on events/fairs in Sweden and Europe. With Action & Passion Designlabland have created winwin design cases for the ICSB participant in The Norths/ Norrbottens exhibition. And this magasin is all about Dlab behind the scenes. The process have proceed since January. And it is many meetings, brainstorms and sketches later we now can show the result at Waterfront and at Nordic Seas icebar. Core vaules during the designprocess have been: Nature, Power & Renewal. So I proudly present the first design strategic attempt to show a smart, modern and exciting picture of Swedish Lapland.

Portrait of a young talent

Per Lundström

A new talented nature & product photographer in Swedish Lapland! Who is the young talanted photographer Per Lundström?

comes from Kiruna and my mother from Piteå. A nice mix of places to go in between. I have always loved to go up to the cabin in Abisko, where the family resides. Going up to the mountain cabin for skiing, fishing and recreation are tremendous. I can´t imagine living anywhere else just for its proximity to the stunning scenery here in Swedish Lapland.

Why choose to live in northern Sweden?

What is your passion?

I´m 26 years old and comes from Luleå in beautiful Norrbotten. Today I works in the company Norrmejerier. I love my job at the dairy factory and when I’m not working I am out in nature photographing. I have lived all my life in northern Sweden. I was born in Boden, but moved fairly quickly to Luleå where my parents wanted to settle. My dad

My greatest passion in life is to go up to the mountains and just breath. Doing exactly what you feel for. Getting into the car and go up ”inde-

finitely” or on holiday and enjoy the journey to the mountains and the wilderness . When you have passed Kiruna and begin to see mountain birch trees, is a great feeling. Waking up in the house with good weather, summer or winter is wonderful. Whether you go fishing or skiing. Or, open the door, look around and let nature decide!

How would you like to develop your photographic skills?

It always shows up new situations that trigger one to learn more about photography. Lately I have been fascinated by lightning and flash functions. Now I´m going to do more missions to the Finnish Levi-which has built up an impressive tourist industry based on nature and culture in Finnish Lapland. But above all, I always bring the camera on all the exciting places and adventures that appears.

You have just joined Convoy (self employment). Why and how does it work? I discovered this type of business organization through a colleague at work who told me about it because it would mean less ”paperwork” if you want to start your own business. It all started when I received an inquiry about taking wedding photos. Then I was offered a small photo jobs in Levi and this encouraged me to start my own. The choice of Convoy was easy because due to various complicated paperwork. I would never managed it myself. Convoy principle is to ”do what you are good at and let us do the rest”, in a superb form of self-employment enterprises. Great!

What image do you dream about taking?

A dream image is a mountain motif reside in the Kiruna mountains, a hut or a tent in the foreground with a illuminated person with the powerful auroras borealis above ...

What is your dream photo assignment?

Honestly I do not really know. I get so happy every time someone asks me to take a picture or use an image that I have already taken. But one dream photo assignment would be to take pictures for a nature photography magazine!

What would you wish Designlabland to help you with?

It is fun and exciting every time Designlabland contacts me! And it is especially gratifying when someone would like to use a picture showing the Swedish Lapland. Collaboration with Designlabland is a great way to get PR and developed my creative entreprenurship. It is great with your project!

Kiruna - city of extremes There is no other city in the world where one on a crystal-clear February day, with snow crunching under your feet and frost as a backdrop, can experience a rocket launch live. Esrange Space Center is located approx 4 miles northeast of Kiruna. Rocket fuel draws grayish-white streaks on its way towards the clear blue sky. In addition to sending rockets to study weightlessness or measuring the ozone layer there is an intensive satellite operation going on at Esrange. Satellite data from around the world are received by the giant satellite dishes and other antennas used to monitor and control satellites. These space-related activities generate about 500 permanent high-tech jobs in Kiruna. The Institute for space physics a few miles outside the city center complements these ventures with research and training. A clear proof of Kirunas wishes to maintain its leading edge position in space development is the city’s international contacts with companies that want to launch space tourists. In direct cooperation with the company Virgin Galactic there are ongoing plans to build the world’s second space port - Spaceport Sweden. The first construction of a space port is taking place in the New Mexico desert called Spaceport America. There one is expecting that the space tourism will create 5000 new jobs! There is no other city in the world where one on a summernight under the midnight sun can be part of the branding of reindeer calves. In the sunny slopes you can enjoy the balmy night winds that sweep away the mosquitoes that otherwise plague both humans and animals. In the compound below a few months old calves are running around and mooing after their cows. The peculiar mooing is easily recognized by the mother who seeks out her calf, who directly gets right under his mothers belly and pushes with his nose against cows udder and voraciously consumes the fat nutritious milk. The calf also creates economy for its owner the sami herdsman. Kiruna is surrounded by samivillages engaged in reindeer husbandry. This ancient industry is forced to fight an unequal battle with the new times and the high-tech businesses that are taking place 1000 meters beneath the city. The reindeer husbandry will have to give way to the mine’s expansion which will affect the migrationroutes. LKAB’s iron ore mine has for over 100 years delivered prosperity to Kiruna and Sweden. The iron-rich ore has been converted into small balls called pellets, which, like butter on bread has been adapted to the customer’s production devices. This far-sighted business model generates billions in annual profits to the community, as long as the demand continues. The mining company is trying to get more women into their production. The women and young people of Kiruna who may work for LKAB will obviously take slices of the cake. The wage levels in Kiruna speak for itself. The declining unemployment figures are further evidence of this. Everything would be hunky-dory in this unique city north of the Arctic Circle, in the same northern latitude as the Mackenzie River Delta of Alaska; if not the extremes posed to it for those who are democratically elected to determine the future of the city. Customer demand for more ore, much more ore, means that the city must move so that production can go on and expand.

In today’s Kiruna there is no Hjalmar Lundbohm. The Patron who built Kiruna at the turn of the century and made the city a place that gave its citizens a quality of life and the values of a good society. A community called the model city. The new city plan took into account that people would have to build and live with as little annoyance as possible from the troublesome cold and snowy winds. Lundbohm also created the world’s most modern school that would assist the mine with skilled workers. Cultural life flourished as well as the voluntary sector in order to provide people with meaningful recreation. The ”moving of the city” or urban regeneration as politicians likes to call it has broken down. For seven years, a discussion on urban relocation, for and against the new city centre, has created an apathetic mood, few of Kirunas inhabitants care today. The Baby-boomer generation, who has retired, mostly living in the so-called Lombolo-area shrug when you ask questions about moving of the city. They are more worried about the fact that there are no apartments for their children. Here they say that politicians have failed miserably. Young people who were invited to the debate on moving of the city has resignated, the views they expressed, seems to have slipped through the cracks. Those who have jobs wants to move to their own apartment. Now they reluctantly still live in their old bedroom in their parents’ house. The recent discussion regarding moving of the city and to build the new city center near the cemetery is perhaps indicative of an issue that died long ago. The thing that could lift the entire Orefields, no one dares talk about. The mining centers should be moved to Lappesuando, municipal boundary between Kiruna and Gällivare. On both sides of the Kalix River an attractive city would emerge. The question regarding the Hospital would take a new turn. LKAB could freely produce several times more ore in the old city centre. LKAB could invest their billions to build a new city instead of moving two. Here a city could be built that would take up the fight with Lulea of becoming county seat. House of Parliament for the Sami Parliament would be the start of this. With substantial investments in cultural and sports facilities, the added attraction of the new city could help the population increase significantly.
