A Message from our Pastor

Dear Parishioners of Saints Peter and Paul,

Bishop Siegel Last Tuesday, Bishop Siegel was appointed the Bishop of the Diocese of Evansville, Indiana. Bishop Siegel has been a long-time friend and assisted us on many weekends over the last two years offering Mass on Sundays and also offering Midnight Mass the last three years. Please keep Bishop Siegel in your prayers as he begins his new ministry on December 15. If you would like to send Bishop Siegel a gift congratulating him on his appointment, you may send gifts to the Diocesan Chancery at: Most Rev. Joseph Siegel Diocese of Joliet 16555 Weber Road Crest Hill, IL 60403 Pope Francis has named Bishop Joseph M. Siegel, up until now Auxiliary Bishop of Joliet, as the new bishop of Evansville, Indiana. The announcement was made public on Wednesday in Washington by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States. Bishop Siegel was named Auxiliary Bishop of Joliet, Illinois, by Pope Benedict XVI on October 28, 2009, and was ordained a bishop on January 19, 2010, by Bishop Peter Sartain. He was born in Lockport Township on July 18, 1963 and is the youngest of nine children. He attended St. Meinrad Seminary, where he completed his college education. He was then sent to the North American College in Rome, where he attended the Gregorian and Angelicum Universities. Bishop Siegel was ordained a priest for the Joliet Diocese in 1988 and then completed his Licentiate in Sacred Theology at the University of St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein, Illinois. Bishop Siegel has served as a member and chairman of the Presbyteral Council and was appointed to the Diocesan Board of Consultors. He also served as director of Continuing Formation for Priests, a member of the Diocesan Vocation Board, the Priest Personnel Board and Dean of Eastern Will County. At the Catholic Conference of Illinois, he served on the Executive Committee and was chairman of the Catholics for Life Department. He chaired the Steering Committee for the Joliet Diocesan Year of the Eucharist and Eucharistic Congress and has been a member of the Bishops’ Respect Life Advisory Board. He is a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus and a member of the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre.

Come Learn, Pray and Play with us!

Kindergarten Open House Events You and your preschooler are invited to attend a Kindergarten Open House. These one-hour programs are scheduled in the Kindergarten classrooms on Thursday, November 9th at 6:30pm, Friday, November 17th at 9:30am, and Sunday, January 28th at 10:45am. We encourage any parent who will have a child entering kindergarten in the next year or two to attend.

Attendees will meet administrators, teachers, and current parents.

Prior to a tour, you will hear an overview of the kindergarten year and have an opportunity to have your questions answered.

Camp Timber-lee Trip Each fall, the seventh grade students at Saints Peter and Paul School have the opportunity to learn in a completely different setting. Our seventh graders had a very exciting and adventurous three days at Camp Timber-lee, which is located in Wisconsin’s Kettle Moraine State Forest, in East Troy, Wisconsin. The camp has over 600 acres of land and provides a dynamic camp experience.

The three days and two nights at Camp Timber-lee were packed with team building exercises, and many fun and interesting activities. Students learned outdoor adventure skills through archery, zip lining, horseback riding, wall climbing, and canoeing. Their indoor activities included leather making, and some animal encounters with raptors and reptiles. It was a great experience for all the students, chaperones and teachers.

Preschool Pals Program Our Preschool Pals Program is going strong. Nearly every Wednesday of the school year from 9:00am to 10:00am, we gather preschool children for a fun hour of crafts, games, stories, sing-a-longs and a treat. Preschoolers (along with a parent) are asked to join us in the lower level of the Ministry Center to meet friends and have a great time.

Altaration: The Mystery of the Mass Revealed The answer when teens ask, “Why do I have to go to Mass?”

Teens today are surrounded by distractions: music fills their ear buds, while tweets and posts are constantly checked and updated. They have been conditioned to fill any void or silent moment with noise and stimulation. So instilling an apprecia‐ tion and enthusiasm for the Mass can be a challenge.

Altaration: The Mystery of the Mass Revealed is a study on the Mass for teens that features powerful cinematography, inspir‐ ing presenters, and engaging workbook resources. Altaration uses humor, stories, and small group discussion to capture your teen’s attention and instill in them a deep and lasting love for the Mass.

Join us for Altaration in The Teen Zone beginning November 6 at 7pm and continuing every Monday through December 18.

Holy Matrimony Policy of Saints Peter and Paul Parish We have begun scheduling 2018 wedding dates and will begin scheduling 2019 wedding dates on Wednesday, January 3, 2018. Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church rejoices with you as you prepare to celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. Because of the large number of weddings at Saints Peter & Paul and, in order to accommodate our parishioners, there are some guidelines which must be followed as you prepare for your wedding. 

The parish will set a date when contacted by only the bride or groom themselves. We are not able to set a wedding date with parents, grandparents, relatives or friends unless the bride and groom are both serving in the military service abroad. All arrangements are also made only with the bride and groom.



Either the bride or groom themselves, or either set of parents, must be registered parishioners for a minimum of three months before the parish will check the calendar for a wedding date. The parish will also permit any individual who has been confirmed in the parish or graduated from our parish school or graduated from North Central College to be married at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church following all other requirements and given the permission of their proper pastor.



The Diocese of Joliet requires a minimum preparation period of 6 months. This means that your wedding date cannot be sooner than six months from the time that the parish confirms your date with you. (If you phone the parish and your date is set on February 1st, the earliest that you can get married is August 1st.) To clarify, if you are newly registered here, there will be a 9 month period before your wedding can take place.



Stipends for weddings are as follows: 









Registered active parishioners of one year or longer – $700.00 Inactive parishioners (non-contributing at the time the wedding is booked) – $1,000.00  New parishioners (registered less than one year at the time the wedding is booked) – $1,000.00

Note: Fees for parish stipend, parish organist and cantors are included in the above offering amounts; however fees for brass and violins are not included in this fee. For those couples who are not registered parishioners but whose parents are, the above guidelines apply to the relevant registered parishioners.

The stipend check should be made out Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, listing the wedding date and time on the memo line. Please insure that your check is submitted to the parish office no later than one month after booking your wedding. (Wedding stipends will be refunded for any cancellation if the parish is notified no later than one month prior to your originally scheduled wedding date.) 

Couples must be engaged prior to setting a wedding date. A date will not be scheduled if Holy Matrimony is only a possibility.



Participation in a Pre-Cana workshop and two dates of “God’s Plan for a Joy-Filled Marriage” is required for those preparing for Holy Matrimony at Saints Peter & Paul. Classes are offered quarterly at Saints Peter & Paul. Please check the parish website for a list of upcoming sessions: http:// www.sspeterandpaul.net/sacraments/wedding-planning). There is no fee for your participation at our Parish if you are being married here; however if your Holy Matrimony is at another Parish, the fee for these class is $125.00.



Participation in one instructional class on Natural Family Planning is required for those preparing for Holy Matrimony at Saints Peter & Paul.

Classes are offered online for a fee of $49. Please login at https://catholicmarriageprepclass.digitalchalk.com/dc/guest/login. Make sure to obtain a certificate verifying your participation and submit to the parish office so that it may be included in your marriage file.



Please be aware, that when a Catholic is marrying a non-Catholic, your Sacrament of Holy Matrimony will be celebrated with a ceremony that does not include the reception of Holy Communion. In these cases, one of our deacons may be assigned to prepare you for and to celebrate your Sacrament of Holy Matrimony.



The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony may not be scheduled if either party has been previously married without first speaking to one of the priests. The secretary will ask this question when taking the initial information.



The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony is scheduled here on Fridays at 4:00 PM and on Saturdays at noon and 2:30 PM. Rehearsals for Friday Holy Matrimony are at 6:00 PM on the Thursday before; rehearsals for Saturday noon Holy Matrimony are at 6:00 PM on the Friday before; and rehearsals for Saturday 2:30 PM Holy Matrimony are at 7:00 PM on the Friday before. Holy Matrimony and rehearsal times are not negotiable.

Due to the large number of Masses (11 Masses) on Sundays, the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony is not celebrated on Sundays.



prompt them to repent and change their ways, but rather “the Pharisees went off and plotted how they

might entrap him in speech” (Mt 22:15). Like the tenants of the vineyard, they sought to kill the master’s

son rather than give the owner of the vineyard his due.1

Unwilling to expose themselves to another public humiliation by Jesus, the Pharisees sent their students with some Herodi‐ ans.2 It is telling that Herodians accompanied those sent by the Pharisees, as they would be most interested in reporting to Herod Jesus’s answer on taxation. King Herod, who was appointed King of Israel by the occupying Romans, obviously favored taxation and as such, was despised by the people. Among the crowds there was growing resentment of foreign occupation and taxation, which in 70 AD boiled over, resulting in the destruction of the Temple (something Jesus had foretold). The Esse‐ nes, an ascetic Jewish sect, resented the tax on religious grounds. Since the coin had the image of the emperor (deemed a god) engraved upon it, they regarded it as a graven image akin to the golden calf in Exodus.3 In this context, they asked Jesus if paying taxes to the Romans was lawful, hoping to entrap Him. Had Jesus said yes, He would have risked alienating the crowds and the Essenes (many of whom were former disciples of John the Baptist who were now following Jesus). If He had answered no, He would have been accused of opposing the will of Caesar, resulting in His prob‐ able arrest and death. Jesus’s adversaries considered it the perfect trap, hoping to pit Him against the crowds and Rome.

As Jesus so often did, He responded to their question with a question. Here Jesus asked them whose image was on the coin they had just handed Him. When they told Him it was Caesar’s, Jesus’s response left them in amazement: “Then give to Cae‐ sar what belongs to Caesar, but give to God what belongs to God.” The Greek word to give, Ἀπόδοτε, actually means “to give back” and was used in reference to paying back a debt. So, giving back to the Romans what was rightly theirs was not paying tribute, but satisfying justice. The same verb is used in the Pharisees’ response to Jesus in the parable of the wicked tenants; it was just that the tenants should be punished for failing to give to the owner of the vineyards his share of the profits from the grapes. Similarly, it was wrong that the Pharisees failed to give back to God what was owed to Him.4 Remarkably, Jesus not only evades their trap, avoiding an “either‐or” response, but reinforces the message of the parable of the two sons and the vineyard about our duty to God.

The accolades given to Jesus by those who came to entrap Him reek of their hypocrisy while unwittingly speaking the truth: “Teacher, we know that you are a truthful man and that you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. And you are not concerned with anyone’s opinion, for you do not regard a person’s status” (Mt 22: 16). The Pharisees hoped they could embolden Jesus to speak His mind against Roman occupation and thereby condemn Himself. Interestingly, to judge without any regard to another’s opinion was seen as an attribute of God alone. In accrediting this quality to Jesus, they unwittingly acknowledged Jesus’s divinity. While Jesus’s words and actions were not swayed by public opinion, it is obvious that the Pharisees were immersed in it (see Mt 21:46).5

The Pharisees, like the wicked tenants, failed to give their Master His due. In aligning themselves with the Romans, the Phari‐ sees sought to maintain their position and privilege, culminating in the death of the Innocent One whom they delivered up to Pilate. Their possessions and status (as the image of Caesar on the coin depicted) became their god. In contrast, we were created and are called to live in the image of God as described in the Genesis story of creation: “Let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness… [So] God created mankind in his image; in the image of God he created them; male and fe‐ male he created them (Gen 1:26‐27). By “giving to God what belongs to God, ”our very selves, we are transformed more per‐ fectly into His image and likeness, and through grace actually share in His divinity. This mystery is recalled daily in the Mass during the Preparation of the Gifts when the priest or deacon quietly prays:

St. Francis Chapel of Eucharistic Adoration Flame of Faith Candles Six candles burn perpetually around the Blessed Sacrament in our St. Francis Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. The burning candles serve as a constant prayer before the Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament.

Envelopes for you to have your intention remembered with one of these candles and prayed for ONE WEEK (Sunday to Sunday) are available in the Adoration Chapel. The intentions will be published in the bulletin.
