Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, This year, Father’s Day is celebrated on June 17. There will be a special collection taken at Masses on June 16-17 to care for our infirmed and senior priests. The Fund for Diocesan Infirmed and Elderly Priests is a special way for the people of the Diocese of Joliet to express their concern for the welfare of those who have dedicated their lives in service to our pastoral care. The money in this fund goes toward priests who need help with extraordinary medical expenses or suffer a catastrophic illness. It also provides for the care of the St. John Vianney Villa, home to several senior priests in the Diocese of Joliet. Prayerfully consider making a donation to help our aged and sick priests as an expression of appreciation for all they have done in exemplifying Christ’s mercy, through their spiritual guidance and celebration of the sacraments. On behalf of all the active and senior priests of the diocese, I am grateful for your prayers and for your generous support of the Father’s Day Collection for our aged and infirm diocesan priests. Please be assured of my prayers for you.

Most Reverend R. Daniel Conlon, Bishop of Joliet

Pure Fatherhood by Devin Schadt

There are no gatherings scheduled for the months of July and August. We will gather again September 11, 2018. Enjoy summer in all its glory!

Fathers are the link between heaven and earth, and are intended to be an image of our Heavenly Father. Drawing on the examples of St. Joseph, Devin Schadt shows us how to become a father on earth like the Father in heaven. Devin is a husband, a father of ive, and the co-founder of the Fathers of St. Joseph, an apostolate dedicated to the renewal of authentic fatherhood. Wow! What a great talk on the importance of fatherhood for families and the impact fathers have in revealing our Heavenly Father. This talk helped me to better appreciate a father's role in the family, on society and the world. Laura - Newtown, PA Attention all Dads – listen to this encouraging and honest talk about the joys of fatherhood. Mixed in are practical ways of asking for St. Joseph’s help – you will not be disappointed! Mary - Lindstrom, MN Devin’s blessing of discovering Pure Fatherhood will bless all men who listen. Norm - Biloxi, MS The SERRA Club of DuPage, an organization supporting vocations to the priesthood and religious life, invites you to join them for Mass and dinner at St. Michael Parish, 310 S. Wheaton Avenue in Wheaton on Monday, June 25th. The evening will begin with Rosary and Mass in the Church at 6:00pm, followed by dinner in the Parish Hall. Bishop Daniel Conlon will be celebrant of the Mass and will install the new Officers of SERRA. To find out more about SERRA, or to make a reservation for the dinner, please contact Joann Carr at 630-665-0994 or carrgeojo@gmail.com. BAPTISM INFORMATION What a joy it is to experience the gift of new life that God gives to His people. Immediately the mystery of God’s love is revealed in the mystery of His creative power which He allows Christian parents to share. Ss. Peter and Paul Parish rejoices with all parents beholding this tremendous gift. Since the Sacrament of Baptism is essential to the Christian life, Ss. Peter and Paul Parish abides by all the norms set forth by the Catholic Church in administering the Sacrament of Baptism. We want the baptism of your child to bear the full Grace that Christ bestows in this sacrament and we do not want any obstacles which would be created by not following these norms. These norms are laid down by the Roman Catholic Church and are age old and time tested norms. We ask all parents to understand the sacred nature of this sacrament which these norms protect and therefore, the inability for Ss. Peter and Paul Parish to compromise these norms without endangering this sacred character. The code of canon law declares: Baptism, the gate to the sacraments, necessary for salvation in fact or at least in intention, by which men and women are freed from their sins, are reborn as children of God and, configured to Christ by an indelible character, are incorporated in the Church, is validly conferred only by washing with true water together with the required form of words.1 Further, in order to celebrate the sacrament of baptism licitly the priest must have a founded hope that the infant will be brought up in the Catholic religion; if such a hope is altogether lacking, the baptism is to be put off according to the prescription of the law and the parents are to be informed of the reason.”2 Please note that this is a direct quotation from the Code of Canon Law which is the universal law of the Roman Catholic Church. This well-founded hope is manifested not simply by the parents’ statements but also by their actions. The parents manifest this founded hope when they attend Mass regularly and seek an on-going relationship with the Church. 1 2

CIC 1983, canon 849. CIC 1983, canon 868, 2.

Godparents When choosing godparents, it behooves the couple to be quite selective. The purpose of the godparent is to guide the child in the ways of the faith so that they might reach heaven. The Code of Canon Law explains that the godparent is one who “will help the baptized to lead a Christian life in harmony with baptism, and to fulfill faithfully the obligations connected with it.” This godparent must: Have completed the sixteenth year.3 Be a Catholic who has received their first communion and the Sacrament of Confirmation.4 Lead a life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken.5 Not be bound by any canonical penalty legitimately imposed or declared.6 Not be the father or the mother.7 A life in harmony with the faith and the role to be undertaken means someone who is practicing their faith weekly, believes what the Church believes, is validly married in the Church or living a chaste single life and has no other obstacles to being a good Catholic example of Christian life.

Saints Peter and Paul Church  June 17, 2018  sspeterandpaul.net

A person of another Christian denomination or other religion cannot be a godparent; however, a Christian person of another Christian denomination may serve as a Christian witness which is not a godparent and whose name does not appear on the baptismal certificate.8 A Catholic cannot be a Christian witness. Any Catholic party is bound by the laws which govern godparents, cf. above. An individual who has left the Catholic faith cannot be a Christian witness because they have freely chosen no longer to live the Catholic faith. Parents may choose to have only one godparent. If the parents choose to have two godparents, one must be male and one female.9 The relationship of two godparents emulates spiritually the parenthood of the biological parents. Just as it is impossible to have two biological parents who are of the same sex so is it impossible to have two godparents of the same sex. In order to avoid any embarrassment on your part, it is advisable that you contact the parish office prior to choosing your godparents. Your godparents will be asked to have their parish priest fill out a godparents form testifying that they fulfill the canonical requirements. 3

SSPP offers a Baptism Preparation Class for parents on the first Monday of each month beginning at 7:30pm in the St. Paul Center for the New Evangelization (formerly called Pastoral Hall). If this is your first child, you MUST attend a class before receiving a date for your baby’s baptism. Both mom and dad are asked to attend. Godparents are also encouraged to attend. Please sign up for the class by calling the Parish Office, 630-355-1081. (Your family should be registered with the parish in order to have your child baptized.) If you have attended a class within the last 10 years (at any parish) you need not re-attend. If you attended at Ss. Peter and Paul, simply call the office to schedule your baby’s baptism and provide the date you attended; if you attended at another parish, you will be asked to provide a letter of verification. We baptize at SSPP each Sunday of the month at 2pm. Because baptism is meant to be a celebration of the community, we DO NOT schedule private baptisms. Also, we make every effort to limit the number of children baptized to four. Please check with the Parish Office to make certain the date you want is available before making plans with your family. The offering to the church for a baptism is $20.00. Couples may pay when they attend the Baptismal Preparation class or they can send payment to the parish office. Required paperwork MUST be submitted to the parish office no later than 14 business days prior to the baptismal date, or your date may be rescheduled. This includes all necessar y infor mation r egarding family records and godparents. A sponsor certificate must be provided by each godparent who belongs to a different parish. The proper sponsor certificate for SSPP will be distributed at our preparation classes and may also be downloaded from our parish website. Christian witnesses are most welcome to celebrate with the family and community, but please note they are not recorded as sponsors on the baptismal certificate or in the baptismal register. Thank you for your cooperation and may Almighty God bless you and your family.

Saint Vincent de Paul A specific spirituality underpins our Vincentian vocation: Vincentian spirituality, so named for our patron St. Vincent de Paul. For Vincentians , the key aspect of St. Vincent’s spirituality are:  To love God, our Father, with the sweat of our brow and the strength of our arms;  To see Christ in the poor and the poor in Christ;  To share the compassionate and liberating love of Christ the Evangeliser and Servant of the Poor;  To heed the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. This spirituality gives life, color, and meaning to who we are and what we do. Vincentian spirituality is the foundation of our vocation, endowing it with credibility, veracity, and integrity. God’s grace strengthens, supports, and energizes the practice of this specific spirituality. Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay organization, leads women and men to join together to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to those who are needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, Saint Vincent de Paul. Would you like to learn more or are you in need of assistance? If so, call: 630-7182127.

Transitional Housing Ministry With two families leaving our program by early fall and new families joining, this is an ideal time to learn more about our work and consider becoming a mentor. Training for new mentors will take place in September. Please remember our hard-working families in your prayers; the obstacles they face can seem overwhelming. Please pray for their success during the 2 years they spend in our program and beyond. Thank you for your continued support through your contributions in the pink envelopes. Pray With Us COME AND ADORE HIM IN THE MOST HOLY SACRAMENT...

VOCATION PRAYER CALENDAR - JUNE

Visit our Saint Francis Adoration Chapel - Open 24/7 Please consider visiting with our Lord at these times. Call Barb at 630-885-1726 or blandiak@gmail.com. Monday 10am Monday 1pm Wednesday 3am Wednesday 6pm

Thursday 8am Friday 12pm Saturday 10PM

Sit quietly and just “be” in the presence of God. Think of a visit to the Blessed Sacrament as coming to see your best friend. Instead of talking to the Lord, try listening to what He wants to tell you.

St. Francis Chapel of Eucharistic Adoration Flame of Faith Candles Six candles burn perpetually around the Blessed Sacrament in our St. Francis Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. The burning candles serve as a constant prayer before the Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament. Envelopes for you to have your intention remembered with one of these candles and prayed for ONE WEEK (Sunday to Sunday) are available in the Adoration Chapel. The intentions will be published in the bulletin.

Flame of Faith Intentions for This Week The seven-day Devotional Candles, at the altar of our Lord, in the Saint Francis Adoration Chapel, are being offered for the following intentions: 1. For God's blessings on all Fathers, biological and spiritual. 2. For God's help to put a life in order according to His will. 3. For guidance, complete healing and return to health for Mary. 4. For the health of baby Levi. 5. For the Fedinec family. 6. For John as he celebrates his 90th birthday.

EVENING PRAYER AND BENEDICTION Please join us for Evening Prayer (Vespers) and Benediction, held every Thursday at 6:00pm in the St. Francis Adoration Chapel.

PRAYER NETWORK Please call Jay Albarran at 630-961-3835.
