Communication from the Bishop Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, On Father’s Day June 15, there will be special collection to care for our infirm and retired priests. The money raised from this collection will go to the fund which provides long term care for our priests who need assisted living or skilled nursing care. Currently the diocese cares for seven of our retired priests who need these services.

While we are blessed to ordain new young men to the priesthood year by year, we have many more priests approaching retirement age. As such, there is a need to strengthen the fund that will provide for their care should they not be able to care for themselves. This collection should not be confused with the collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious, which is taken in December and assists religious men and women who belong to religious orders. That collection does not benefit or provide care for our retired diocesan priests.

I humbly ask that you prayerfully consider making a donation to help our aged and sick priests as an expression of appreciation for all they have done to nourish your life of faith through their spiritual guidance and celebration of the sacraments.

On behalf of all the active and retired priests of the diocese, I am grateful for your prayers and for your generous support of this Father’s Day Collection. Please be assured of my prayers for you.

A Message from our Pastor Dear Parishioners, Heating System and Flooring One of the elements of Pass It On was the replacement of the almost 90 year old boiler and heating system in the parish church. The new system is a high efficiency system which will also reduce heating costs as we move into the future. When the radiators were removed, we were able to see damage to the walls and floors that was previously hidden from view. Some of the damage was significant but nothing that endangered the integrity of the building.

Fortunately, the damage was discovered. Eventually, we will have photos of the damage and the repair work on our webpage under the Pass It On tab so that you can see it. You may have also noticed that it is time once again to give some maintenance and tender loving care to that wood floor in the body of the Church. This will be done at the beginning of August. You can see areas where the finish on the floor is deteriorated from winters of salt and ice and water being brought into the church on shoes.

Some have suggested that we not address some of these projects and have called them "extravagant." Our team just didn't feel comfortable leaving the floors go until they rot out and have to be entirely replaced.

Tuckpointing of the church Over the last year our Facilities Team, Finance Team, the Administration Commission and our Church Tuckpointing Committee have been working with the engineering firm, KGH, who did the work on our bell tower some years ago, to evaluate the status of the brick work on our parish church. We have been noticing some issues with the tuckpointing even though some tuckpointing on the lower level was done about 15 years ago and some spot tuckpointing done over the 87 year history of our church. You might have noticed some "splotches" around the building even very high up on the walls of the church which seem to have a different color of mortar. These are signs that some issues need to be addressed. When we had the original assessment done for "Pass It On" these tuckpointing issues were not highlighted or were not as apparent. Although brick work lasts a very long time, the experts tell me that tuckpointing should be done about every 30 years. (continued on next page)

Please notice that, because we had tuckpointed and cleaned the limestone on the church five years ago, we will need to do very little work on the limestone. We will also not need to do any tuckpointing on the portion of the bell tower that was reconstructed some years ago.

Let me tell you again. Some have suggested that we just leave this project for parishioners to address after I am gone and, financially, this is very tempting. "Let someone else deal with the issue and come up with the money." Others have suggested that we do only the bare minimum and only those spots that are really bad. Although the contractor would do the best they can to match the color of the mortar, our beautiful church would end up looking like a jigsaw puzzle.

Instead of leaving the problem to someone else and risking serious problems in the future, after much consultation, the Committee has decided first and foremost to tuckpoint all of the areas of the parish church that are necessary for the long-term good of the building and, then, also tuckpoint all those areas that need to be tuckpointed for the proper look of the building. This means, for example, that the entire East facade of the building (main entrance) will be tuckpointed since this is the portion of the building everyone sees, but the Western wall of the building will only receive tuckpointing for those areas that are necessary since it faces the alley and is not easily noticeable.

I would like to thank the Committee for their hard work and expertise. We continue to maintain our buildings for the good of our parish and community. If you like the fact that we are being responsible with the patrimony of our parish and would like to show your support, please simply place an extra donation in the monthly capital reserve envelopes included in your envelope packet or drop a donation off at the parish office.

MOMS GROUP The MOMs (Meeting Other Mothers) Group brings together Catholic mothers committed to family and community service. We meet monthly for support, friendship and affirmation of our role as Catholic mothers. Our fellowship opportunities include playgroups, meals for moms, rosaries, service activities, moms’ night out and children’s activities. Youth Group Kentucky Mission Trip Fundraiser There will be donut sale on Sunday, June 29 sponsored by the youth group. Donuts will be sold after the 8am, 9:30am, 11:00am and 12:30pm Masses. We will also be accepting donations. All of the money collected will go towards our annual Kentucky Mission Trip.

This annual trip gives our teens the opportunity to travel into eastern Kentucky and work with the Christian Appalachian Project. This organization serves the poor of that region. The youth group will be working with the elderly of the Cumberland Valley. In previous years, we have made wheel chair ramps, rebuilt porches, put in new kitchen floors, and even built a small bridge. The teens work in very hot weather in extremely rural conditions. They work hard and really preach the Catholic faith through their actions. Please be generous in supporting the youth group.

WHAT IS TOTUS TUUS? The Totus Tuus parish summer catechetical program, a week-long “parish mission” for Catholic youth in the 1st through 12th grades, is dedicated to proclamation of the Gospel and promoting the Catholic faith through evangelization, catechesis, apologetics, Christian witness, the sacraments, Marian devotion, and Eucharistic worship.

Totus Tuus accomplishes this by taking college students and seminarians to engage the youth of the parish with skits, songs, games and inspiring, interactive teaching. Totus Tuus instructs young people in the basic tenets of the Catholic faith to cultivate both a firm intellectual grounding and a solid personal relationship with Christ. Totus Tuus demonstrates that one can be a faithful, practicing Catholic and still have fun!

While classes comprise part of the day, Totus Tuus is not school and makes sure that the kids have FUN too! Therefore, there is a “pump up” to start each day, snack break in the morning, recess and “cool down” after lunch, and a skit break in the afternoon. This popular program has grown tremendously in the few years since it started here…register your child to be a part of it!

TOTALLY YOURS Totus Tuus, a Latin phrase meaning “totally yours,” was the motto of St. John Paul II. Taken from St. Louis de Montfort’s work, True Devotion to Mary, it signifies our desire to give ourselves entirely to Jesus Christ through the hands of our Blessed Mother Mary. It also expresses our effort to give all that we have to every young person we encounter.

Totus Tuus seeks to inspire in young people a true longing for holiness, a deep desire for daily conversion, and an openness to their vocation by challenging them to give themselves entirely to Jesus Christ through Mary and by continually strengthening their prayer lives in imitation of Her. CURRICULUM The Totus Tuus program has divided the four pillars of the Catechism of the Catholic Church into a six year cycle. Additionally, each summer is dedicated to the mysteries of the Rosary. Christian Service Happenings ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY Today as we celebrate Pentecost, Jesus says to his disciples: “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”

Perhaps Jesus is asking you to carry out a mission of love to the poor and needy by becoming a member of our Society. As little as 2-3 hours a month may be all that is expected of you. TRANSITIONAL HOUSING MINISTRY As we celebrate Pentecost, we ask you to pray to the Holy Spirit for the four homeless families who have been forced from their homes and now take refuge in our transitional housing program.

May God grant them the peace, courage and wisdom needed to help them attain the future they hope for. And, may we, who have been given so much, have the grace to be generous and encouraging and successful in directing these needy families to self-sufficiency. ELIZABETH MINISTRY As Mary went in haste to visit her cousin Elizabeth who was with a child to help and comfort her, so does our Elizabeth Ministry for all those who are in need. If you have experienced infertility, loss of a pregnancy, an infant or child death, you are not alone, many of our parish families have experienced the same and the Elizabeth Ministry would like to help you through it. On the other hand, if you are expecting for the first time, or you are new parents who just had a baby or adopted a child, the Elizabeth Ministry would like to celebrate with you and offer our services to you. Through prayers, adoration hours, and sharing personal experiences, our ministers will try to bring you some peace and comfort no matter what your situation is. American Heritage Girls Troop IL0908 at SS Peter and Paul Parish has some exciting camping trips planned for the SS Peter and Paul Troop IL0908 summer: Shabbona Lake State Park, Pratt Woods, Cantigny, Rock Cut State Park, Hoover Forest Preserve and a high adventure trip to Door County which includes kayaking and zip-line. We will resume our Troop Meetings in September. Our troop meets every second and fourth Monday of the month from 4:00-5:30PM. If you haven’t registered yet, please contact us. St. Francis Chapel of Eucharistic Adoration Flame of Faith Candles Six candles burn perpetually around the Blessed Sacrament in our St. Francis Eucharistic Adoration Chapel. The burning candles serve as a constant prayer before the Lord, present in the Blessed Sacrament. Envelopes for you to have your intention remembered with one of these candles and prayed for ONE WEEK (Sunday to Sunday) are available in the Adoration Chapel. The intentions will be published in the bulletin.

Please remember in your prayers, the following people who are seriously ill and others who are suffering with long-term or terminal illnesses:

Please note that if you wish to have a family member or friend’s name included with the petition for the sick which is read at weekend Masses, you must call the parish office by 9 AM on Friday. Your loved one’s name will automatically be added into the sick list in the bulletin the following weekend. If you add a loved one’s name to the petition when you come to Mass, please follow up with a phone call to the parish office on Monday so the name may be included with the sick list in the bulletin.

In the interest of keeping our sick list current, the first weekend in July we will remove names put on prior to June 1st, unless we hear from you or a family member that you wish a name to remain on the list. Call the Office, 630-355-1081, to add, remove or keep a name on the sick list. Any names received after 9 AM on Friday will be included in the following weekend’s prayers.

Wedding Anniversary Mass The Diocese of Joliet will hold its Thirty-sixth annual Wedding Anniversary Mass on Sunday, September 14, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet. If you are celebrating either your 25th or 50th anniversary this year, please contact the SSPP parish office by June 27th so that we may submit your name to the Diocese for a formal invitation.

Those celebrating over 50 year anniversaries do not receive a formal invitation, but will be able to register to attend at a later date.
