Cash Flow Appeal Dear Members/Devotees Last year we celebrated fifty years since the formation of Gurjar Hindu Union (GHU) and next year we will celebrate 10th anniversary of our new Sanatan Mandir and Community Centre. At present we have over just under one million pounds of debt which we owe to our bank. Every month we have to pay over £10,000 in interest and capital repayment. On top of this, we also have to pay £7,000 in running cost for our Temple and Community centre totalling £17,000 of costs every month! This is a substantial amount of outgoings for our Centre and the community. In order to help with cash flow and reduce the amount of debt, we are requesting our members, devotees and supporters to come forward and to pledge a monthly standing order ranging from £10 onwards to help with this worthy cause to manage both the debt and running cost. Rameshbhai Shanker and Umeshbhai Nayee have been nominated by GHU to take on this noble cause. Please help and support them in this work.

If you require any help to obtain standing order form or to complete the forms please contact : Rameshbhai : 07809 604 863 and Umeshbhai : 07774 607 749 We sincerely hope and pray that you will help and support in this Cash Flow Appeal. Board of Directors: Chandubhai Nayee

All ceremonies are explained in English, Gujarati & also in Hindi if required at various stages. I conduct various Hindu ceremonies, in particular I specialise in Hindu Weddings. In my experience, the modern day couples view Hindu weddings as a mixture of old practices, intricate rituals and unfathomable customs. My role as a Hindu priest here is to make relevant this most ancient of traditions and present it in contemporary manner suitable to the modern day couple. My Promise: x Tailor your wedding and other ceremonies to suit your needs, at the same time observing the essence of Hindu traditions x Honour the traditional rituals of the ceremony and provide a contemporary explanation of the underlying sentiments in English, Gujarati or Hindi x Engage and interact with your guests during the ceremony and involve them during all major parts of the ceremony (for example, antarpatta, kanya-daan, Mangal-fera, Saptapadi) x Create an enjoyable, pleasant environment and try to make the day memorable for you and everyone present

Be Emotionally Intelligent : Follow Bhagvad Gita

- Jayendra Lakhani

From The Bhagavad Gita Arjuna says to Sri Krishna “Mind is very restless, forceful and strong, O Krishna, it is more difficult to control the mind than to control the wind” We all have reactions, and nine times out of 10, the things we’re struggling with are internal. It’s the battle of the two different mindsets. The mindset that tells you that you can do it and the one that says that you can’t. The mindset that feels happy one minute and then is overwhelmed with anxiety and doesn’t know how to lift the veil of depression the next. Emotional intelligence can be the most potent weapon in our armory. It helps boost our selfawareness, self-control, motivation, empathy, and social skills, all of which help us become much a better person. if your emotional abilities aren’t in hand, if you don’t have self-awareness, if you are not able to manage your distressing emotions, if you can’t have empathy and have effective relationships, then no matter how smart you are, you are not going to get very far. Bhagavad Gita is one of the best personal development book you will ever read as it will enlighten you. Sanatan Dharma advocates that “A man should first seek spiritual wisdom and thereafter pursue material ambitions.” He will then never lose his peace of mind. For example, when the sea of one’s mind is agitated by the waves of emotions, it cannot reflect tranquillity. One needs to have perfect emotional self-control to attain self realization. The central theme of the Bhagvad Gita is the purpose of human life. It states that renunciation is a desired goal. “Work away; but offer the fruits of your actions to God. Do not run after the objects of the senses. Lead a detached life.Yet renunciation does not mean running away from one’s duties. As long as we feel we are bound we have to make an effort to be free. The way to achieve this is by righteous living. Shrugging off your duties towards society is not the way forward, teaches the Bhagwat Gita. 14

Sanatan Darshan | June - July - August 2019

Further, that work which gives elevation, joy and peace to us is right and that which brings depression, pain and restlessness to us is wrong. This is an easy way to find out right and wrong. However, an individual with the acumen of emotional intelligence would be in a position to judge the distinction between right and wrong. “Let noble thoughts come from all sides”, Bhagvad Gita tells us. Great men and women have appreciated the wisdom of the Bhagvad Gita across cultures, religions, races and professions. The need for the spiritual illumination provided by the Bhagvad Gita is never as urgent as it is now, in the darkness of a world torn apart by cultural fragmentation, terror, rank materialism, technological isolation and global competition. Why is it necessary to be emotionally intelligent? We are enlightened by Bhagvad Gita that being genuinely in touch with emotions tends to be tremendously difficult amid work and other activities. Emotions don’t follow a routine, and if you have a tendency to ignore your feelings, the mad rush of present day life makes it convenient to suppress and avoid feelings as they arise.Yet nothing is more precious than experiencing your feelings and moods. They are the most spontaneous part of your makeup, the most primary expression of your awareness as it relates to the world. You are the totality of all the relationships you have, and the most accurate mirror of them is your emotions. It helps to make your emotions enjoyable. The life of feelings is meant to be rich and satisfying, but if your emotions are strangers to you, you cannot enjoy them. Many people have convinced themselves that they have few, if any, emotions.Yet, despite your efforts to repress them, there is a feeling attached to every single thought we have. Bringing all these feelings to light puts you back into the wholeness of the mind-body connection, and wholeness is the most satisfying state in you would love to live. We term this state as being emotionally competent. It may be seen that the teachings and knowledge of Bhagvad Gita are even more directly relevant to today’s modern world. We believe that a sincere adoption of Bhagvad Gita teachings will have positive relevance to our lives today. What are these teachings? The various episodes as enshrined in Bhagvad Gita provide succinct illustrations of beneficial results of righteous behaviours and harmful effects of sinful behaviours. Learned religious leaders in the past often cited these sacred sayings to rulers, the kings, the princes and others in their hours of indecision and despondence. Over centuries and millennia they provided guidance to successive generations in making morals and ethical judgments as to what is right and what is wrong. Running a marathon with a backpack is tough and may hinder you from winning the race. Don’t let the baggage from your past slow you down. Our feelings are not there to be cast out or conquered. They’re there to be engaged and expressed with imagination and intelligence. Sri Krishna says that with practice and dedication, Mind and emotions can be controlled. May you be blessed with a life full of abundance of joy, happiness and good health. Jai Kri Krishna.

How To Use Social Media To Support Your Favourite Charities - Jayendra Lakhani There is little doubt that social media is becoming interwoven with nearly every aspect of our lives. Charities are using social media more and more to reach new audiences. Personally I have used Social Media for fund raising for my favourite charities on a regular basis, and last year for my 60th birthday I had run a campaign for the Apple Tree Centre and had raised nearly £1,500 There are so many charities to choose from so it can be very confusing which ones to select. Some of the major points to bear in mind are as follows: • • • •

Identify a cause that is important to you. What do you care about? What issues do you see the world facing? Decide which important qualities your charity should have. E.g., is it accountable and transparent and does it have a sense of responsibility to the community. Is it making a difference to the community? For example, a meetup and support for the elderly, activities for young and old i.e. social, health – yoga/meditation, spirituality. How much of your donation will go towards the overheads. Whilst you should not get hung up on this area, the charities needs to be have overheads to function efficiently. However, when I have had a closer look at some charities, they have some of the best pension schemes for their senior management, very high salaries – which means that often some charities end up spending more on overheads and less on the causes. I recall some years ago, fund raising for one charity had run viral on facebook, which enabled it to raise $millions, but bulk of its income was going towards salaries, bonuses and superb pension plans for teh directors.

Why did I choose Apple Tree Centre? 5 Years ago, I was diagnosed with a disc Bulge, Facet Joint Arthritis. My back pain was unbearable and I could not do my day to day basic duties. The Centre had organised a whole day yoga clinic, which then inspired me to start doing yoga regularly. I also use to go to the temple for Mantra meditation or just go and sit quietly and observe the present moment. I was also privileged to attend various lectures/Katha (recitals) which helped me with my personal development & mental fitness 5 years on, my back pain has improved drastically. I am able to often walk 20K to 30K steps, I started playing badminton and back to fitness. But most importantly the use of the centre has helped me develop spiritually and the meditation has helped me a lot on how I can tap into the abundant inner Mind Power. This centre has helped so many people to grow and blossom. I like the fact that Apple tree centre has very little overheads, and is mostly run by volunteers and is doing amazing work for the local community. If you would like to raise funds for Apple Tree Centre then do contact any of their committee members. 16

Gurjar Hindu Union (GHU) Ltd Report of the Trustees for the Year Ended 31 December 2018 STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT Recruitment and appointment of Board of Directors The directors of the company are also charity trustees for the purposes of charity law and under the company's articles. Elections take place every three years. One third of the trustees retire by rotation at every 3rd annual general meeting but are eligible to be re-elected at the general meeting. Persons with a range of skills, experience and commitments are recruited to serve on the board of directors of GHU through the following means; - referrals from local contacts within both the voluntary and statutory sectors. - volunteer recruitment undertaken by the local volunteer bureau. - recruitment of volunteers who are users of the GHU services. - volunteers who have served in GHU for at least 3 years. Those persons who are interested in getting involved with the GHU's work are initially invited to attend the board's meetings as observers and meet with one or more honorary officers. Suitable persons take part in a formal election held at the AGM and confirmed as GHU's directors/trustees. Organisational structure The executive committee consists of seven full governors and seven co-opted governors. The "co-opted governor" positions were created to empower individuals within the committee to be more creative and take on greater, non legal responsibilities. The governors meet regularly to discuss and review the financial position, the fund raising strategy and all other charity matters, with all major decisions being made at these meetings. Day to day matters are delegated to the staff and volunteers. Risk management The trustees have a duty to identify and review the risks to which the charity is exposed and to ensure appropriate controls are in place to provide reasonable assurance against fraud and error. OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES The charity's objects are supported by the charity's activities. The objectives of the charity are : - Promote equality and diversity by working towards the elimination of racial discrimination and to promote equality of opportunity and good relations between persons of different racial groups in Crawley and the surrounding area, in particular but not exclusively persons of the Hindu Faith and their families. - The relief of the elderly and women in need, in particular but not exclusively elderly people and women living in Crawley and the surrounding area by the provision of a day care centre. - To establish a centre and to maintain and manage such a centre for activities promoted in furtherance of the above objects. - To advance the understanding and awareness of the Hindu religion in Crawley and surrounding area. - To advance education and to provide facilities in the interests of social welfare for recreation and leisure time occupation with the object of improving conditions of life for persons in Crawley and the surrounding area, in particular but not exclusively persons of the Hindu Faith and their families. ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE We are now in our fourth year of operation in our newly purpose built Sanatan Mandir and Community centre (SMCC). We are keen to offer a range of services during the week and over the course of the year that the community find both beneficial and spiritually fulfilling. We have an ever growing number of people using the mandir and community facilities. The number of GHU and private activities held in the SMCC have seen a further growth this year. We are committed to continue the charity's aim and objectives. We continue to run many community activities and were delighted when the Divas Dance Club joined the GHU and added to its variety. We are also delighted to inform that a new and very energetic youth group has started in the GHU. From review of our income and expenditure account, the charity has seen declining income and a statement of financial activites deficit for the year. In the year to follow, we anticipate an increase in membership and incoming resources. FINANCIAL REVIEW The state of the charity's affairs as at 31st December 2018 and the results of its operations for the year ended on that date are set out in the attached financial statements. Total receipts on unrestricted funds increased in the year and amounted to £205862 (2017 : £230093) and the charity incurred a deficit of £4844 (2017:£45838). Page 2

Independent Examiner's Report to the Trustees of Gurjar Hindu Union (GHU) Ltd I report on the accounts for the year ended 31 December 2018 set out on pages five to eleven. Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner The charity's trustees (who are also the directors for the purposes of company law) are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under Section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act)) and that an independent examination is required. Having satisfied myself that the charity is not subject to audit under company law and is eligible for independent examination, it is my responsibility to: -

examine the accounts under Section 145 of the 2011 Act to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under Section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act); and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

-

Basis of the independent examiner's report My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view ' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statements below. Independent examiner's statement In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention: (1)

which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the requirements -

to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 386 and 387 of the Companies Act 2006; and to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records, comply with the accounting requirements of Sections 394 and 395 of the Companies Act 2006 and with the methods and principles of the Statement of Recommended Practice: Accounting and Reporting by Charities

have not been met; or (2)

to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
