Ambassadors Report by Ashwin Soni Chair of the Ambassadors’ Group Jai Shree Krishna – Firstly may I wish you and your family a very happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. In May 2020 we will mark 10 years since we opened our stunning Mandir and Dhamecha Suite. On behalf of this august ambassador’s group of respected members (Kirtikumar Patel, Piyooshbhai Chotai, Illeshbhai Patel and Umesh Nayee) – I wish to say BIG thank you to you for helping and supporting GHU. This year we have co-opted Ramesh Shanker to the Ambassador’s Team to head a special fund raising project, “Cash Flow Appeal”. Together with Umesh and help from others they have managed to sign 100 people to donate just £10 per month. Their aim is to sign 500 people to this appeal in the next four years! Please do help and support in this appeal to help with cash flow to run our Centre. For the past three years the three pillars of GHU (Bharat Lukka, Chandubhai Nayee and Rohitbhai Patel) have managed and run GHU very well. All the religious activities are taking place very well, thank you Chandubhai, Catering has improved and is the envy of the town, thank you Rohitbhai and the cost, accounts, management and maintenance are carried out with excellence, thank you Bharatbhai. The trio cannot run a large Centre so successfully on their own! Behind them are dedicated Hari Bhaktos – you have worked tirelessly to help and support GHU. Thank you very much from 1200 families of Crawley for keeping GHU going so successfully. You are the true heroes of our town! We have made a lot of progress over the past 10 years. We started with a bank loan of £3.6 million. Today this stands at £865,000. What a fantastic achievement Crawley! 4

Sanatan Darshan | January - February - March - April 2020

Even without beating our own drums, we have achieved awards and praise from: • Mandirs up and down the country – many have come to us for advise on building work, fund raising, religious events, Sastriji visa application • Locally we have followed our moto to provide Education, Culture and Integration – we received Crawley Community Award for this effort in 2017. • GHU provides holistic support and services to our community at the stunning Apple Tree Centre. Our vital services are aimed at children and young people, families, older people, and the disabled to help bring the community together. The services we provide include language classes, youth clubs, sports, activities that focus on wellbeing, welfare support, a drop-in centre for the community, a day-care centre for older people and festivals/visits that promote community involvement. We need to do much more in the coming years: • Complete paying the loan. It is costing us £9,000 a month in interest payment • We want to improve and enhance the facilities and services that we offer now over the coming years. At present we offer 12 wide and varied activities • We plan to provide activities to decrease loneliness amongst older people including community art projects, dance activities and activities to reduce social isolation, reduce stress, anxiety and to increase independence and confidence. • We shall continue to attract young and old – who can help and support the smooth running of GHU. We need more and new forward looking and ambitious people to take GHU progress even more in the future. GHU achievements • 1968: GHU was formed by first generation Indians from East Africa and the Indian Subcontinent. • 1989: GHU’s First Constitution was approved. • 1992: GHU hosted ‘Ram Katha’ by Pujya Morari Bapu. Over 5,000 people attended every day for 9 days and 20,000 on weekends. • 1992 to 1998: GHU continued to make progress, held three events Gurjar Hindu Union (GHU) Ltd. | crawleyhindu.com | facebook.com/AppleTreeCentre

Report by Bharat Lukka , Finance Director of GHU

Dear Members, Friends, well-wishers Namaste, Jai Shree Krishna, Jai Sia Ram 2020 is the year 10th Anniversary for the Sanatan Mandir Crawley. The role of the finance team (Bhupendrabhai, Prafulbhai, Prabodhbhai & Jayprakash) is to help support and control GHU finances through prudent financial controls. The three appointed GHU governors Bharatbhai, Chandubhai and Rohitbhai meet quarterly with the ambassadors where we review short, medium- and long-term plans. 2019 we have focussed on treasury. We helped to set fund raising targets in the key areas, namely Religious, Hall Hire, Social and others. We track all the income and expenditure on a monthly basis in order to identify any cost saving and/or improvement opportunities. We are pleased to report that planned activates and income streams are in good order and in some cases exceeding expectations. We have also focused on claiming Gift Aid in a timely manner every six months. The three appointed governors have continued to work hard to provide excellent service and support to the Community. Finally, a word about fund raising. We have made good progress in paying our debt. We still have outstanding loan of £865,000 with the Bank. Working with the ambassadors we have jointly developed an ambitious plan to raise funds over the next 12 months. Please do come forward and support the following four fund raising activities: • • • • 8

Hello, my name is Deep Nayee and I’m 14 years old. I have been working at the Sanatan Mandir in Crawley as a volunteer since the age of 6. I am the youngest volunteer in the Mandir and the grandson of Chandulal Nayee who is a governor at the mandir. I help in every single function and event held at the mandir. I help in the religious area and also in the car-park area. The main reason why I go to the mandir and do what I do, is because of my grandfather, seeing him work at the mandir from a very small age had inspired and hugely motivated me to also work at the mandir. I am so happy and thankful of who I am at this moment. For all the young people I would like to say that it’s never too late to help out in the mandir, there are plenty of opportunities and places that you can help out in, and which you will enjoy and feel proud of doing. If you would like to help out in the mandir feel free to come in to the mandir and speak to one of the members in the mandir or you can call one of the members to speak to. Thank you,

Gujarati Classes at Apple Tree Centre Gujarati Classes have been taught successfully at Crawley GHU for many years, starting at our former site on Spencer Road. The Apple Tree Centre adjacent to the Mandir provides a safe environment where we are able to teach children of all ages our cultural heritage. We believe that our children should be given the opportunity to read and write Gujarati to enable the continuation of our mother tongue. Students enrol from as early as five years of age irrespective of their culture or religious background. The curriculum is geared to teach students whose first language may not be Gujarati or who may not be exposed to the language at home. Our curriculum starts with a strong foundation, teaching the alphabet using visual aids, songs, games and activities. Over time the children are supported and prepped for recognised GCSE qualifications. Special events are also celebrated annually such as Diwali, Navratri, Holi and Christmas, with students learning about our culture through stories and songs. Currently we have 4 teachers and two administrative assistants who assist with the running of classes, although we are always looking for new teachers. Teachers and assistants are DBS checked with classes held in a secure environment to ensure the safety of your children. Weekly classes are conducted at 3 different levels: • Beginner • Intermediate • Advanced (pre- and GCSE level students) Classes are held on Saturdays from 10am to 12:30pm. (This includes 10am Aarti) Maayan P, Grade A Krishen J Mistry, Grade A

Recent GCSE Results: Moeisha L, Grade A Mansi, Grade B

Reema L, Grade A

We are always looking for new teachers, whether paid or voluntary. For

further details regarding enrolment or teaching please contact: Kamleshbhai Patel 07960 091443

All ceremonies are explained in English, Gujarati & also in Hindi if required at various stages. I conduct various Hindu ceremonies, in particular I specialise in Hindu Weddings. In my experience, the modern day couples view Hindu weddings as a mixture of old practices, intricate rituals and unfathomable customs. My role as a Hindu priest here is to make relevant this most ancient of traditions and present it in contemporary manner suitable to the modern day couple. My Promise: x Tailor your wedding and other ceremonies to suit your needs, at the same time observing the essence of Hindu traditions x Honour the traditional rituals of the ceremony and provide a contemporary explanation of the underlying sentiments in English, Gujarati or Hindi x Engage and interact with your guests during the ceremony and involve them during all major parts of the ceremony (for example, antarpatta, kanya-daan, Mangal-fera, Saptapadi) x Create an enjoyable, pleasant environment and try to make the day memorable for you and everyone present

Cash Flow Appeal Dear Members/Devotees Last year we celebrated fifty years since the formation of Gurjar Hindu Union (GHU) and next year we will celebrate 10th anniversary of our new Sanatan Mandir and Community Centre. At present we have over just under one million pounds of debt which we owe to our bank. Every month we have to pay over £10,000 in interest and capital repayment. On top of this, we also have to pay £7,000 in running cost for our Temple and Community centre totalling £17,000 of costs every month! This is a substantial amount of outgoings for our Centre and the community. In order to help with cash flow and reduce the amount of debt, we are requesting our members, devotees and supporters to come forward and to pledge a monthly standing order ranging from £10 onwards to help with this worthy cause to manage both the debt and running cost. Rameshbhai Shanker and Umeshbhai Nayee have been nominated by GHU to take on this noble cause. Please help and support them in this work.

If you require any help to obtain standing order form or to complete the forms please contact : Rameshbhai : 07809 604 863 and Umeshbhai : 07774 607 749 We sincerely hope and pray that you will help and support in this Cash Flow Appeal. Board of Directors: Chandubhai Nayee
