Anthony Albanese and Labor believe every Australian deserves access to free healthcare with their Medicare card.
But after a decade of neglect under Peter Dutton and the Liberals and Nationals, Medicare needs a booster shot.
That’s why we will make the biggest ever investment in Medicare so more Australians can see a GP for free.
Here's how:
✓ Expand the bulk billing incentive to all Australians.
✓ Boost Medicare payments to general practices that bulk bill every patient.
✓ Train thousands more nurses and doctors.
✓ Expand the availability of free, urgent care by opening another 50 Medicare Urgent Care Clinics.
Peter Dutton is not on the side of Medicare and never has been.
As Health Minister, Peter Dutton cut $50 billion from hospitals and made medicines more expensive.
Peter Dutton said there were “too many free Medicare services”. Peter Dutton tried to end bulk billing with a GP tax and then started a six-year freeze to Medicare rebates that stripped billions out of Medicare.
Australia’s doctors voted Peter Dutton the worst Health Minister in Medicare’s history for a reason.
Labor built Medicare, and only Labor will protect it and improve it for all Australians.

‘Western Sydney women are making a difference’ - that was the message from Katie Mullens, Liberal federal election candidate for Parramatta, at a breakfast for 100 women to mark International Women’s Day.
“There are so many amazing women in Parramatta doing great things for our community - and helping to lift other women up to succeed,” Ms Mullens said.
“I wanted to celebrate those women and harness their energy in one room.
“It is my hope that every woman who attended walked away with at least one new connection who can offer support and champion them on their journey.”
A local lawyer who has lived and worked in Parramatta for the past 20 years, Ms Mullens said she was inspired by the women driving change across Western Sydney. Running to become the Liberal MP for Parramatta, to strengthen our
economy and get the country back on track, Ms Mullens said, “The festivities this year are being held in particularly challenging times, with countless women in Paramatta doing it tough due to the cost-of-living crisis”.
“I put my hand up as the candidate for Parramatta to help them by easing the burden that they have been carrying for the past three years - we can’t afford three more years of these economic struggles. I’m campaigning to deliver a change of government, so that our Liberal team can implement the plan for low inflation and cheaper energy.” Ms Mullens highlighted three local organisations led by and for women at the breakfast for the tremendous impact they have made.
“Carolaine Hartigan has grown Western Sydney Mums into a community of 80,000 and assisted many local mums identify spaces and activities for their kids to enjoy for free.
“Swecha Kulshrestha helped deliver our incredible Holi celebrations at Prince Alfred Square as part of
Opera Events Australia.
“I also have to reference Immigrant Women’s SpeakOut for the work they have done to support migrant women with guidance and help when they’ve needed it most.”
Other attendees at the breakfast included Shadow Minister for Western Sydney Melissa McIntosh, Senator Maria Kovacic, State Member for Epping Monica Tudehope, the NSW Shadow Health Minister Kellie Sloane, and Liberal Senate candidate Jess Collins.
Every year on March 8th, the world comes together to celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD), a global observance dedicated to recognizing the achievements of women across various fields while advocating for gender equality. This day serves as a reminder of the progress made toward women’s rights and highlights the challenges that still need to be addressed.
The origins of International Women’s Day can be traced back to the early 20th century, a time when women were actively fighting for better working conditions, voting rights, and equal opportunities. The first official IWD was celebrated in 1911, inspired by the efforts of labor movements and women’s rights activists across Europe and North America. Over the decades, it has evolved into a powerful global movement supported by governments, organizations, and individuals advocating for gender equity.
Each year, International Women’s Day is marked by a theme that reflects contemporary issues surrounding gender equality. The theme for 2024, ‘Inspire Inclusion’, emphasizes the need for a world where women’s voices are heard, their contributions are valued, and their presence is actively encouraged in all aspects of society.
Women’s Achievements Across the Globe
From politics and science to sports and business, women continue to break
barriers and shatter stereotypes. Figures like Malala Yousafzai, who advocates for girls’ education, and Serena Williams, a legend in women’s sports, exemplify how determination and resilience can create lasting change. In the corporate world, women leaders are reshaping industries and fostering inclusive workplaces.
While significant strides have been made, challenges persist. Women still face wage gaps, underrepresentation in leadership, and societal biases that hinder progress. On this International Women’s Day, it is crucial to not only celebrate achievements but also to commit to actionable change—whether through policy advocacy, supporting women-owned businesses, or ensuring equal educational opportunities for girls worldwide.
There are many ways to honor International Women’s Day, including attending events, supporting female entrepreneurs, mentoring young women, and raising awareness about gender
equality through social media and community initiatives.
As we celebrate this day, let’s recognize that the fight for gender equality is not just a women’s issue—it’s a global one. Every effort counts in creating a more inclusive and fair world for future generations.
International Women’s Day!
On the evening of March 5, 2025, the prestigious NSW Parliament hosted a gathering of nearly 300 distinguished community leaders, dignitaries, and guests, all united by the spirit of mutual respect and understanding.
This occasion marked Affinity’s 16th annual NSW Parliament Friendship & Dialogue Iftar Dinner, a hallmark event that has become a fixture in the Australian interfaith and intercultural calendar. The theme of the evening, “True understanding does not arise from speaking the same language, but from opening our hearts to one another” – a powerful quote by the great Sufi poet Rumi – set the tone for the night. As the holy month of Ramadan commenced, it offered the perfect backdrop to celebrate unity, reflection, and the importance of connection in a multicultural society.
The event’s master of ceremonies, Simon Marnie, iconic Australian broadcaster, extended a warm greeting to all attendees, inviting them to share in the evening’s reflections and celebrations, and also acknowledged that this year marked Affinity’s 25th anniversary.
The evening’s proceedings continued with a heartfelt Acknowledgement of Country and a spectacular didgeridoo performance by Rycka Satrick, a talented Aboriginal and Torres Strait
The event then moved to welcoming addresses from distinguished co-hosts, starting with The Honourable Steve Kamper MP, Minister for Multiculturalism. Kamper’s words underscored the vital importance of promoting multiculturalism and dialogue in society. Next, the Honourable Mark Coure MP, Member for Oatley and former Minister for Multiculturalism, now serving as Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism, took the stage. His speech was a powerful reminder of the collective responsibility to nurture and protect Australia’s multicultural fabric, which continues to grow and evolve.
The final co-host of the evening, Ahmet Polat, Executive Director of Affinity Intercultural Foundation, was introduced by Simon Marnie as a “cousin to us all,” a term that embodies the deep connection Polat shares with those he has worked alongside in the field of intercultural dialogue. With over three decades of dedicated service, Polat has played a significant role in fostering understanding between communities, particularly through his leadership at Affinity.
The evening’s program also included a heartfelt tribute to the event’s contributors, whose support was integral to the success of the gathering. As guests took their seats for the Iftar meal, tokens of appreciation were
presented to acknowledge the contributions of all involved in making the evening possible. As the evening progressed, the guests were treated to an insightful reflection on the Meaning of Ramadan by Mehar Ahmad, a respected community leader and educator. Ahmad’s words resonated deeply, highlighting Ramadan’s universal themes of spiritual growth, selfdiscipline, and community solidarity.
The evening reached its spiritual apex with a beautiful adhan recitation by Imam Mogamat Majidih Essa from the Royal Australian Navy, followed by Qur’an recitation by Bilal Kilic, a revered religion and values teacher at Amity College. As guests enjoyed the Iftar meal, a deep sense of camaraderie and mutual respect filled the room. The beautiful lights and lamps that adorned the space were a reflection of the multicultural society we celebrate. The event was a reminder of the importance of fostering dialogue and understanding in today’s world, where the need for peace and harmony across cultures and faiths is more pressing than ever before.
The highlight of the evening was the keynote address delivered by Hugh de Kretser, the newly appointed President of the Australian Human Rights Commission. De Kretser, who commenced his five-year term in July 2024,
shared his invaluable perspectives on human rights in Australia. His commitment to human rights and social justice continues to inspire those in the field, and his address was
a call to action for all to work together towards a more just and inclusive society.
Following the keynote, a special video tribute honoured Fethullah Gülen, Islamic scholar, whose legacy continues to profoundly impact the Affinity Intercultural Foundation. The video showcased his global contributions to fostering peaceful dialogue among diverse communities, an ongoing source of inspiration for the foundation’s work. This was followed by an engaging conversation between MC Simon Marnie and veteran ABC broadcaster John Cleary, a respected member of the Affinity Advisory Board. The discussion explored various topics, including human rights, social justice, and the crucial role of dialogue in building a more inclusive society, particularly in the context of Fethullah Gülen’s philosophy.
The cultural richness of the evening was further showcased through a stunning Sufi music performance by Farhan Shah & Sufi Oz. Hailing from Adelaide, the group mesmerized the audience with their fusion of traditional Sufi qawwali music and modern influences. The musicians, who come from countries including Pakistan, Spain, Sri Lanka, and Japan, offered a beautiful blend of cultures, adding to the evening’s celebration of diversity.
A particularly poignant moment of the evening was the introduction of Martha Jabour OAM, the 2025 NSW Australian Local Hero, as the guest of honour. Her presence at the event was a powerful reminder of the strength of resilience and compassion, with her journey serving as an inspiration to all who work toward healing and reconciliation.
The evening concluded with a heartfelt Vote of Thanks delivered by Violet Roumeliotis AM, the CEO of Settlement Services International, a national not-forprofit organisation providing human and social services across Australia. In her speech, Violet reflected on the power of community and the importance of continued dialogue in building a more inclusive and compassionate society.
The event served as a powerful reminder of the need for unity in a diverse world. Through inspiring speeches, performances, and the shared meal, Affinity’s Annual Friendship and Dialogue Iftar Dinner proved to be a shining example of the importance of fostering understanding, respect, and dialogue across cultures and faiths.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is one of the holiest months in Islam.
1. The Revelation of the Quran
t is observed by millions of Muslims worldwide as a time of fasting (sawm), prayer, selfdiscipline, and spiritual reflection. The month holds deep religious significance, as it is believed to be the period when the first verses of the Quran were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by Angel Jibreel (Gabriel).
Significance of Ramadan
Ramadan is a time for Muslims to strengthen their faith, seek forgiveness, and purify their hearts. The fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, making it an essential religious obligation. It is observed from dawn to sunset, during which Muslims refrain from food, drink, smoking, and sinful behavior. The fast is broken at sunset with a meal called Iftar, and the pre-dawn meal before fasting begins is called Suhoor.
Spiritual and Religious Importance
Ramadan is considered the month of the Quran because it was during this time that the holy book was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Muslims dedicate more time to reading and understanding the Quran, as it is a source of guidance and enlightenment.
2. The Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr)
One of the most spiritually significant nights of Ramadan is Laylat al-Qadr (The Night of Power), which falls within the last ten nights of the month. It is believed to be the night when the Quran was first revealed, and it is described in the Quran as “better than a thousand months” (Surah Al-Qadr 97:3). Worship on this night is considered highly rewarding, and Muslims spend it in prayer, supplication, and recitation of the Quran.
Fasting in Ramadan: A Spiritual Discipline
1. Rules of Fasting
Fasting (sawm) in Ramadan is obligatory for all adult Muslims, with exceptions for children, the elderly, pregnant or nursing women, travelers, and those who are ill. The fast begins at Fajr (pre-dawn) and ends at Maghrib (sunset).
4Permitted during fasting: Good deeds, prayers, charity, and acts of kindness.
4Forbidden during fasting: Eating, drinking, smoking, and engaging in sinful activities.
2. Purpose of Fasting Fasting is not just about abstaining from food and drink but also about self-discipline, patience, and empathy for the less fortunate. It teaches gratitude, humility, and the importance of spiritual purification.
Daily Routine During Ramadan
1. Suhoor: The pre-dawn meal, which helps sustain energy throughout the day.
2. Fajr Prayer: The first prayer of the day, marking the beginning of the fast.
3. Work and Worship: Muslims continue their daily routines while engaging in extra prayers and Quran recitation.
4. Dhuhr & Asr Prayers: Midday and afternoon prayers provide moments of reflection and peace.
5. Iftar: The evening meal to break the fast, often starting with dates and water, followed by a wholesome meal.
6. Maghrib & Isha Prayers: The prayers after sunset and nightfall.
7. Taraweeh Prayers: Special prayers offered in congregation at night, where long portions of the Quran are recited.
Acts of Worship and Charity in Ramadan
4Increased Prayers: Apart from the five daily prayers, additional prayers like Taraweeh and Tahajjud (late-night prayer) are performed.
4Reading the Quran: Many
Muslims aim to complete the entire Quran during Ramadan.
4Charity (Zakat and Sadaqah): Giving to the poor and needy is encouraged, as generosity is highly rewarded.
4Seeking Forgiveness: Ramadan is a time to repent and seek Allah’s mercy.
At the end of Ramadan, Muslims

celebrate Eid al-Fitr, a festival of joy, gratitude, and unity. The day begins with a special prayer (Salat al-Eid), followed by feasting, gift-giving, and acts of charity. Muslims also give Zakat al-Fitr, a mandatory donation to help the less fortunate enjoy Eid.
Ramadan is more than just a month of fasting; it is a time of self-purification, devotion, and spiritual growth. It brings families and communities together in worship and kindness, strengthening faith and compassion. The lessons learned in Ramadan—patience, gratitude, and generosity—should continue beyond the holy month, guiding Muslims in their daily lives.
May this Ramadan bring peace, blessings, and closeness to the Almighty for all who observe it. Ramadan Mubarak!
Wishing you and your loved ones all the blessings for this holy month of Ramadan.

Eid al-Fitr, also known as the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” is one of the most significant celebrations in Islam.
It marks the end of Ramadan, the holy month of fasting, prayer, and self-reflection. Observed by Muslims around the world, Eid al-Fitr is a joyous occasion that brings families, friends, and communities together in gratitude and celebration.
Significance of Eid al-Fitr
Eid al-Fitr is a time of thankfulness and joy. After a month of fasting from dawn to sunset, Muslims express gratitude to Allah for giving them strength, patience, and guidance during Ramadan. The festival also emphasizes unity, compassion, and generosity, as it is a time to share blessings with others, especially the less fortunate. The celebration begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon, which marks the start of the Islamic month of Shawwal. The
night before Eid, known as Chaand Raat, is filled with excitement as people prepare for the big day by shopping, decorating homes, and applying henna.
Eid al-Fitr Traditions
1. Special Eid Prayer (Salat al-Eid)
On the morning of Eid, Muslims gather in mosques or open prayer grounds to perform the special Eid prayer. This prayer consists of two units (rak‘ahs) and is followed by a sermon (khutbah), reminding believers of the importance of gratitude, generosity, and unity.
2. Zakat al-Fitr: Charity Before Eid
Before the Eid prayer, Muslims are required to give Zakat al-Fitr, a special charity that ensures that the poor and needy can also celebrate Eid. This mandatory act of charity
purifies the fast and strengthens the sense of community.
3. Festive Meals and Feasting
After a month of fasting, Eid al-Fitr is a time for delicious feasting! Families prepare traditional dishes, and guests are welcomed with sweets and special delicacies. Some popular Eid foods include:
4Sheer Khurma – A sweet milk pudding with dates, vermicelli, and nuts.
4Biryani & Kebabs – Flavorful rice and meat dishes.
4Maamoul – A Middle Eastern date-filled cookie.
4Samosas & Pakoras – Savory snacks enjoyed during Eid gatherings.
4. Eid Greetings and Eidi (Gifts) Muslims exchange “Eid Mubarak”
greetings, embracing one another and spreading joy. Elders give Eidi, money or gifts, to children as a token of love and blessings.
5. Visiting Family and Friends
Eid is a time to strengthen family ties and mend relationships. People visit relatives, neighbors, and friends, sharing meals and exchanging good wishes. It is also a time to forgive and let go of past conflicts.
6. Dressing in New Clothes
Wearing new or best clothes is a significant part of Eid. People dress in beautiful traditional attire, symbolizing renewal and joy. In many cultures, women adorn their hands with henna, adding to the festive spirit.
Eid al-Fitr Around the World
Eid al-Fitr is celebrated with unique traditions across different countries:
4Saudi Arabia & UAE – Grand prayers, family feasts, and fireworks.
4India & Pakistan – Chaand Raat shopping, henna, and large community gatherings.
4Turkey – Called “Şeker Bayramı” (Sugar Festival), it is celebrated with sweets and visits.
4Indonesia & Malaysia – People return to their hometowns (mudik) to celebrate with family.
4USA & UK – Community Eid events, cultural festivals, and charity drives.
The Message of Eid al-Fitr

4Thankfulness – Appreciating the blessings of Allah.

May you and your family enjoy the blessings of this special month.
Holi, often called the “Festival of Colors,” is one of the most anticipated and
It marks the arrival of spring, the end of winter, and the victory of good over evil. Beyond its mythological and religious significance, Holi is a festival of unity, joy, and cultural richness.
Historical and Mythological Significance
Holi has deep roots in Hindu mythology and history. The festival is primarily associated with two major legends:
and widely celebrated festivals in India and across various parts of the world.
1. The Legend of Prahlada and Holika According to Hindu mythology, King Hiranyakashipu, a demon king, wanted to be worshipped as a god. However, his son Prahlada remained a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu. Enraged by his son’s devotion, the king conspired with his sister Holika, who had a divine boon that made her immune to fire. She tricked Prahlada into sitting with her in a burning pyre, hoping to kill him. However, due to divine intervention, Holika was burnt to ashes while Prahlada remained unharmed. This victory of good over evil is symbolized by Holika Dahan, where bonfires are lit on the eve of Holi.
2. The Legend of Radha and Krishna Holi is also closely associated with Lord Krishna and Radha. It is believed that Krishna, who had a dark complexion, was worried about whether Radha, with her fair complexion, would accept him. His mother, Yashoda, playfully suggested that he color Radha’s face with hues of his choice. This playful act evolved into the tradition of smearing colors on loved ones, a hallmark of Holi celebrations today.
Pre-Holi Celebrations: Holika Dahan
The night before Holi, people gather around large bonfires to perform Holika Dahan. This ritual signifies the burning
away of negativity, jealousy, and evil spirits. Families and friends offer prayers, sing traditional songs, and celebrate the triumph of righteousness.
The Grand Celebration of Holi
On the day of Holi, streets, parks, and open spaces turn into colorful battlegrounds. People of all ages throw gulal (dry colored powders), splash water balloons, and spray each other with colored water using pichkaris (water guns). The atmosphere is filled

with laughter, joy, and music.
Traditional Delicacies of Holi
Holi is also a festival of feasting. Some of the most popular delicacies prepared during Holi include:
4Gujiya: A deep-fried pastry filled with sweet khoya (thickened milk), dry fruits, and coconut.
4Malpua: A deep-fried, syrup-soaked pancake that is soft and delicious.
4Thandai: A cooling milk-based drink flavored with saffron, almonds, and sometimes infused with bhang (an edible cannabis preparation).
4Dahi Bhalla: Soft lentil dumplings soaked in yogurt, topped with chutneys and spices.
Regional Variations of Holi
Holi is celebrated differently across India, with each region adding its unique flavor to the festivities:
4Lathmar Holi (Barsana & Nandgaon, Uttar Pradesh): In this unique tradition, women playfully hit men with sticks (lathis), and men protect themselves with shields.
4Phoolon Ki Holi (Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh): Celebrated in the temples of Vrindavan, this Holi is played with flowers instead of colors.
4Dol Jatra (West Bengal): A grand procession of Lord Krishna and Radha’s idols is carried out, accompanied by singing and dancing.
4Shigmo (Goa): A spring festival similar to Holi, marked by cultural performances, processions, and street dances.
4Holla Mohalla (Punjab): Celebrated by Sikhs, this festival includes martial arts displays, mock battles, and horse-riding events.
The Symbolism and Modern Relevance of Holi
Holi goes beyond its mythological and religious roots to
The victory of good over evil – Encouraging people to remove
Social harmony and unity – Breaking barriers of caste, religion, and status as people celebrate together.
Eco-Friendly and Safe Holi
In recent years, concerns have been raised over the use of synthetic colors that can harm the skin and environment. Many people are now opting for organic and natural colors made from flowers, turmeric, and herbal extracts. Additionally, celebrating a dry Holi with minimal water wastage is becoming a responsible way to enjoy the festival.
Conclusion
Holi is not just a festival; it is an experience that brings people together in a spirit of love, fun, and renewal. Whether it’s through the playful application of colors, the warmth of festive delicacies, or the unity it fosters, Holi remains a timeless celebration of joy and togetherness.
As we celebrate Holi, let’s spread happiness, forgiveness, and positivity, making the world a more colorful place!
Wishing everyone a very Happy Holi!

Jainesh Jogia, director and founder of Agnee Funeral is doing yeoman service to mankind
Can you tell us about your background. “I hail from Suva, Fiji, where I was born to my parents, Kanji Bhai and Prabha Jogia, who are First Generation Indians rooted in Fiji. Raised in the rich traditions of Hinduism, I found religion to be an integral part of life’s fabric from an early age.
My educational journey took an intriguing turn as I attended Catholic schools, exposing me to diverse perspectives within our religiously varied community. Growing up, my family fostered an environment of openness and hospitality, welcoming all into our home without hesitation.
Beginning my formal education at the University of the South Pacific and later completing it at the Australian Catholic University, I furthered my studies with postgraduate work at Newcastle University.
It was during this time that my path diverged into the technology industry, where I dedicated myself until 2010 when I ventured into entrepreneurship in an entirely different sector.
Just before the onset of the global COVID-19 pandemic, I found myself drawn to an industry that had always held a mysterious allure for me – the funeral industry. Contemplating the journey between a person’s passing and their solemn presence in a adorned casket before their loved ones had long intrigued me.
Through the most challenging of times, I gained firsthand insight into the inner workings of this industry. Armed with this knowledge and experience, I founded Agnee Funeral Services.
I view my life’s journey as a tapestry woven with lessons, each one preparing me to offer the utmost care and support to grieving families. My purpose, my dharma, is to ease their burden during their darkest hours.”
“What prompted the establishment of Agnee Funeral Services?
Foremost, I firmly believe that funerals within our Indian community should be conducted by individuals who intimately understand the intricacies and significance of our traditions.
This belief stems from a deep-rooted conviction that only members of our own community can truly appreciate the nuances involved in honoring our departed
Furthermore, I recognized a glaring need for someone from my generation to step forward and fulfill this essential role, particularly in a predominantly Western society where our cultural traditions may be overlooked or misunderstood by younger generations.
This perspective is particularly poignant given that many individuals within my age
group (ranging from 30 to 60 years old) still have elderly parents or relatives amongst us.
I am personally driven by the importance of reassuring our elders that there is someone within their own community who comprehends the correct procedures and cultural requirements surrounding funerary rites. It is paramount that they feel a sense of comfort and confidence knowing that their traditions will be respected and upheld with dignity.
Moreover, having been closely involved in ushering numerous individuals into the care of various funeral service providers, I have witnessed firsthand the behind-the-scenes processes and the conditions of various mortuaries and storage facilities. Regrettably, there is often much to be desired in terms of standards and care.
I am proud to affirm that Agnee Funeral Services operates in partnership with impeccably maintained facilities, where stringent protocols are rigorously adhered to ensure the utmost sanctity and respect for the deceased. I am confident that these facilities provide the level of dignity and
care that I would personally desire when my time inevitably comes.
At Agnee Funeral Services, our guiding principle is simple yet profound: to deliver cremation services with the utmost ethical consideration and compassionate care.”
“What distinguishes Agnee Funeral Services from other providers? Our commitment extends beyond merely attending to the deceased’s needs as they transition to our facility for their final rites. What truly sets us apart is the personalized care and meticulous attention to detail we extend to the grieving family throughout the entire process.
I personally guide the family with compassion and empathy, ensuring they feel supported every step of the way.”
“Allow me to guide you through the process of arranging a funeral with Agnee:
Upon receiving authorization from the family to represent them, we respectfully bring the departed loved one to our impeccably maintained facility. Here, they
are allocated a private resting space where they remain under our attentive care for the ensuing days.
During this period, we meticulously handle all legal documentation necessary for a dignified cremation ceremony, affording the family the opportunity to witness the final journey of their cherished one.
Meanwhile, I personally visit the family at their residence to collaboratively organize the details of the final day, ensuring it reflects the essence and wishes of their loved one.
Throughout the entire process, our approach is characterized by unwavering care, comfort, and support. I am dedicated to being there for the family every step of the way, offering my personal assistance and guidance.”
“To ensure that we deliver personalized and compassionate services to families during their time of need, we follow a comprehensive approach:
1. Personalized Consultation: Following
the initial contact, I personally meet with the family to discuss their preferences and plan the funeral service. This allows us to tailor the arrangements to ensure they can bid their loved one a meaningful farewell.
2. Collaborative Approach: I work closely with the family and their religious leaders, such as their family pundit, to ensure that cultural and religious customs are respectfully observed. This collaborative effort ensures that the funeral service honors the traditions and beliefs of the deceased and their family.
3. Cultural Sensitivity: Drawing from my experience in both Hindu and Western funeral practices, I bring a deep understanding of cultural nuances to our services. This knowledge, coupled with compassion and precision, enables us to conduct the final rites in accordance with Hindu customs, respecting every aspect of the tradition.
By combining personalized consultation, collaborative teamwork, and cultural sensitivity, we strive to provide families with a compassionate and dignified farewell for their loved ones.”
“At Agnee Funeral Services, we offer a range of unique and customized services to honor the individuality of your loved one:
1. Customized Coffins: We specialize in crafting personalized coffins tailored to reflect the unique personality and interests of the deceased. From incorporating favorite rugby team colors to depicting significant imagery from their life journey, we can create coffins that truly celebrate their essence. Additionally, our coffins can be custom-sized and shaped to suit individual preferences. For instance, we once designed a coffin resembling an oversized suitcase for a seasoned traveler.
2. Varied Hearse Options: We provide a choice between black or white hearses to complement the style and preferences of the family.
3. Custom Flower Arrangements: Our team can create bespoke floral arrangements to adorn the funeral proceedings, adding a personal touch to the ceremony.
4. Personalized Memorial Cards: We offer personalized memorial cards, allowing families to commemorate their loved one with a lasting keepsake.
These unique and customized services are designed to ensure that every aspect of the funeral honors the individuality and legacy of your beloved family member.”
“At Agnee Funeral Services, we understand the importance of ensuring our services remain accessible and affordable for families during their time of need.
While we recognize that funerals can be as elaborate and intricate as the family desires, ultimately serving as a celebration of the life lived, we also prioritize affordability.
Our commitment extends to providing services that align with the economic capabilities of each family, while still upholding the traditional Hindu customs and practices.
During the consultation phase, we transparently discuss all available options with the family, ensuring they are fully informed about the costs involved. This approach allows families to make informed decisions that accommodate their financial circumstances while honoring their loved one in a meaningful and dignified manner.”
The NSNA Service.
“The NSNA (No Service No Attendance) Cremation Service represents a novel and costeffective approach to funerals, emerging in recent years as an alternative option. Designed primarily for families who do not adhere to religious beliefs or traditions, this service foregoes formal ceremonies.
The process involves transporting the deceased to our facilities, where necessary documentation is completed before cremation occurs without ceremony. It’s essential to note that families are not notified of the cremation timing and cannot select a specific time for the cremation.
Following cremation, the ashes are delivered to the family, allowing them the flexibility to hold a memorial at a time and place of their choosing, providing an opportunity to honor the life of their loved one in their own way.”
How do you handle cultural and religious
differences when it comes to funeral services?
“As someone from a Hindu background, I have an inherent understanding of the cultural and religious nuances that shape funeral traditions. This shared heritage with most of my clients provides me with a unique advantage in comprehending their needs and desires.
Recognizing that every family is distinct, with its own set of customs and rituals, I prioritize honoring these individual traditions with meticulous attention to detail. By ensuring that each ritual is performed in accordance with the family’s wishes, I strive to provide a funeral service that respects and reflects their cultural and religious beliefs.”
Share some of the challenges that you’ve faced while running Agnee Funeral Services, and how you’ve overcome them?
“One of the primary challenges we encounter at Agnee Funeral Services is ensuring the accuracy of documentation from stakeholders. Even the smallest error in paperwork, such as a misplaced letter or number, can jeopardize the cremation process.
To address this challenge, I’ve implemented a meticulous system for data management. Every piece of information we collect undergoes thorough double-checking before being processed. This system has proven invaluable, as it has helped us avoid any unsuccessful ceremonies thus far.”
What is the future for Agnee Funeral Services?
“At Agnee Funeral Services, I have a clear vision for the future that revolves around making the journey easier for both the deceased and their families. With several initiatives in the pipeline, rest assured that each event and detail planned is aimed at providing comfort and support during difficult times.
My ultimate aim is to serve my community with the highest level of respect and dignity. I firmly believe that assisting my fellow human beings during their moments of grief is my calling and duty.
It is truly an honor to fulfill this role, and I am committed to continuously striving for excellence in serving those in need.”

After more than four years of aggressive interest rate hikes aimed at curbing inflation, the recent cash rate decrease marks a significant shift in the economic landscape. This marks the first rate cut since November 2020.
Interest rates play a central role in the economy by influencing borrowing costs, which in turn affect consumer spending, business investment, and the housing market. The central bank’s decision to reduce the cash rate signals a shift toward a more accommodative monetary policy. This could have far-reaching effects, particularly as it follows a period of higher rates designed to cool inflation and bring it back to target levels. For consumers, the immediate impact is a reduction in the cost of borrowing. Home loans become cheaper to service, creating
the potential for increased demand in the housing market. But what does this mean for prospective homebuyers, property investors, and the broader real estate landscape?
Historically, there has been a close connection between consumer sentiment and housing activity. When interest rates fall, buying a home becomes more affordable. This, in turn, can lead to a surge in housing demand, especially for first-home buyers and those looking to upgrade their properties. But it’s not just about affordability—lower rates can also boost consumer confidence, helping to counterbalance broader economic concerns.
With borrowing costs on the decline, buyers may find themselves in a more favorable position to enter the housing market. For many, the ability to lock in a lower mortgage rate could mean lower monthly repayments, freeing up extra income for other financial goals. For those looking to upgrade or enter the market for the first time, a reduced cash rate may present an opportune time to make a move. However, it’s not just about affordability. The change in the cash rate also has the potential to stimulate greater market
activity. Buyers, sensing that conditions are becoming more favorable, may flood the market in the coming months, sparking heightened competition—especially in popular regions. This surge in demand could ultimately push up property prices, particularly in tightly held areas.
The cash rate decrease also offers promising prospects for property investors. With lower interest rates, investors will likely experience reduced borrowing costs, making it easier to finance property purchases and potentially increasing their investment returns. For those holding multiple properties, the reduction in servicing costs could also improve cash flow, which might allow for further acquisitions or renovations. For investors, this shift may signal the beginning of a more dynamic phase in the property market, marked by increased activity and possibly rising property values. However, it’s crucial to remain aware of market conditions in your specific area, as the impact of the rate cut can vary by location.
The link between consumer sentiment and housing demand is well established, and a rate cut typically helps bolster confidence. As buyers feel more optimistic about their financial future, they’re more likely to make major decisions, such as purchasing a home. This improved sentiment, paired with more affordable mortgage rates, could breathe new life into the housing sector, leading to a period of growth and increased activity.
For those looking to buy, sell, or invest in property, now is a key moment to evaluate how the changes in interest rates may affect your decisions. The housing market could be on the verge of a significant shift, with increased buyer demand, rising prices, and heightened competition on the horizon.

On March 6, 2025, the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir Sydney unveiled one of the tallest metal statues in Australia at its Sydney Precinct. The grand unveiling ceremony was attended by Minister for Climate Change and Energy of Australia, Chris Bowen MP and Federal Labor Member for Greenway & Minister for Communications, Michelle Rowland MP, Mahant Swami Maharaj, high priests of the Swaminarayan order, and thousands of community members. Federal Member for Greenway and Minister for Communications, Michelle Rowland MP, welcomed the unveiling of the 49-foot statue of Lord Swaminarayan ji at Kemps Creek.
“North-West Sydney is built on the contributions of many vibrant cultures, faiths, and traditions, including the Hindu community.
BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha is a focal point—a place of worship and deep spiritual significance for the community.”
“Standing tall in the skyline, the new statue can be seen from a great distance, symbolizing Neelkanth Varni’s inner peace—an important and timeless message for all of us.”
Federal Member for McMahon and Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen MP, added:
“The BAPS temple at Kemps Creek will be the best Mandir in the world, in my view. I am very proud to host it in our community.”
The statue depicts Lord Swaminarayan in his youth, known as Neelkanth Varni, shown in a yoga pose. There are only three statues in the world with this pose. The statue stands 49 feet tall, with each foot representing his age during his ascetic years.
This statue of Neelkanth Varni—the youthful form of Lord Swaminarayan—serves as a monumental symbol of peace, resilience, and focus. Alongside the statue, epigraphs have
been installed to promote core values such as community service, integrity, self-discipline, and love, inspiring these principles within the larger community.
The newly built BAPS Swaminarayan Hindu Mandir and Cultural Precinct in Kemps Creek, Sydney, has unveiled one of Australia’s tallest metal statues in a grand ceremony today. This remarkable milestone further enriches Australia’s multicultural heritage and serves as a testament to the values of harmony and unity. In the presence of Ministers Chris Bowen MP and Michelle Rowland MP, Mahant Swami Maharaj, high priests of the Swaminarayan order, and thousands of community members, the magnificent statue of Neelkanth Varni was inaugurated. This awe-inspiring statue stands not only as a work of art but also as
a beacon for the community, encouraging peace, self-discipline, and love, with the accompanying epigraphs designed to inspire future generations.
The 15-metre-tall statue of Bhagwan Swaminarayan in his youthful form, known as Nilkanth Varni, stands as a powerful symbol. Depicting the ascetic stance in which Bhagwan Swaminarayan mastered Yoga in the Himalayas during his youth, the statue represents intense self-discipline and meditation, a stance known as Tapomurti or ‘Statue in Penance.’ It is a profound representation of values that resonate deeply with people today, and similar statues can be found at Swaminarayan temples worldwide.
The Cultural Centre marks the completion of Phase 1 of the temple project, which began in 2021. Phase 2 will see the construction of the main temple, located close to Western Sydney Airport.
His Holiness Mahant Swami Maharaj, the sixth spiritual leader of BAPS, has led the celebrations for the completion of Phase 1 and will formally launch Phase 2 during his month-long visit to Sydney
starting on March 4, 2025. The 92-yearold spiritual leader is participating in several key events, including the unveiling of the statue, Holi celebrations, and the groundbreaking ceremony for the traditional stone temple at the site. Devotees from across Australia, New Zealand, the UK, US, and India are in attendance. Prior to his arrival in Sydney, Mahant Swami Maharaj visited Melbourne, where he honored over 1,300 individuals who have memorized 315 verses from the Satsang Diksha scripture, a text authored by Mahant Swami himself.
Kunal Patel, a spokesperson for BAPS, described the precinct as a space where individuals can immerse themselves in India’s rich cultural traditions. “This precinct has been 10 years in the making, offering a space where individuals can practice their faith, spend time with family, or simply enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the garden or the area around the statue,” Patel said.
The multi-million-dollar project, funded by volunteers and donors from the BAPS community and the broader community, reflects the dedication and volunteer spirit that is central to the BAPS organization. Praful Jethwa, a member of BAPS, emphasized that the project mirrors Mahant Swami Maharaj’s selfless service and dedication, which have inspired countless followers over decades.
The Cultural Centre was formally inaugurated with a Mahayagna (a grand prayer ceremony) on March 5, followed by the unveiling and consecration of the Tapomurti statue on March 6, 2025. The site for the temple was personally chosen by Mahant Swami Maharaj in 2015, during his visit to Australia as a senior monk. The establishment of this new temple marks a significant milestone in the growth of BAPS in Australia, offering a cultural and spiritual space that will benefit both local and international communities for years to come.

As a woman, you embody a unique and profound energy that connects you to the world in countless ways - as a friend, a daughter, a sister, a partner, a mother, or any other role that is meaningful to you. The role of a woman is diverse, powerful, and multifaceted, often balancing strength with softness, independence with nurturing, and wisdom with compassion.
Each year, Women’s Day brings an ideal opportunity for you to embrace what it means to be a woman. The “I Am Woman” meditation is a powerful tool for women to connect with their inner strength, softness, and resilience. This meditation helps you to recognize the strength it takes to show up every day, balancing all the demands of life while still caring for yourself.
Find a calm space
As with any meditation, begin by finding a quiet and comfortable space where you will be undisturbed. Sit in a relaxed position, either cross-legged on the floor or sitting in a chair with your feet grounded. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths, allowing your body and breath to settle and your mind to calm.
Mindful Breathing
Focus on your breath. Inhale deeply through your nose, filling your lungs with air, and exhale slowly through your mouth. Continue to breathe deeply, paying attention to the rise and fall of your chest with each breath. As you breathe, imagine each breath filling you with positive energies of light, love, and vitality.
Let us now look at a few affirmations that will help you form a deeper connection to your authentic self, empowering you to step into your power and embrace all the beauty and strength that reside within you. Repeat these affirmations
silently or aloud:
Affirmation 1: “I Am Powerful”
Bring your awareness to the strength within you and repeat the following affirmation to yourself.
As you say this, feel the energy of strength and determination flow through your body.
“I am powerful. I am capable of facing any challenge that comes my way.”
Affirmation 2: “I Am a Woman of Worth”
This meditation focuses on acknowledging your self-worth and celebrating your identity as a woman. Visualize the energy of femininity and grace within you. Imagine yourself flowing like a river – purposeful, powerful yet winding your
way around bends with ease and flowing gracefully with an energy that is soft, yet strong. With each breath, repeat the affirmation:
“I am worthy. I enjoy love, respect, and abundance in every area of my life.”
Allow yourself to truly believe in the power of these words. Let go of any doubts or negative self-talk, and embrace all that the universe has blessed you with.
Affirmation 3: “I Am Complete”
This affirmation focuses on self-love. Place your hands over your heart, gently close your eyes and feel a warm soft energy washing over you, filling every cell of your body with compassion and acceptance. Repeat this affirmation as many times as you can in a day:
“I am complete in myself. I have happiness, success and peace within me.”
As you repeat this, feel a deep sense of gratitude
for who you are and all that you have accomplished in life. You are complete just as you are, and you have everything it takes to continue on your journey of success.
Closing the Meditation
Slowly bring your awareness back to the present moment. Take a few more deep breaths, feeling the strength, love, and power that you’ve cultivated within this meditation. When ready, gently open your eyes.
There YouGo! The “Ï am woman” meditation
allows you to embrace the vulnerability, the softness, and the fierceness of being a woman, all in one go. Carry the energy of this meditation with you throughout your day and remember - You are powerful. And you are beautifully, wonderfully a woman.
Yours mindfully, Rajni

Amother walks into a GP clinic in Western Sydney, carrying her three-yearold daughter who has had a fever for days. She’s worried but also hesitant—she knows the visit will cost
money, and she isn’t sure if she can afford it this week. Across the city, in the Eastern Suburbs, another mother takes her son to the doctor without a second thought. She expects a long consultation where her doctor will check everything carefully and talk about prevention.
In Australia, where you live can decide how long and how well you live. People in some areas live ten years longer than those in others. Women in Western Sydney are twice as likely to die from heart disease compared to those in wealthier suburbs. In certain
communities, diabetes is so common that people think it’s normal—but it shouldn’t be. This isn’t about genetics or bad luck. It’s about who has access to quality healthcare—and who doesn’t.
For families trying to find a good GP, the system can feel confusing. Some doctors bulk bill, some charge fees, and the cost of seeing a doctor seems different everywhere. The government has recently announced changes to Medicare, but many patients are still wondering: Will this actually make GP visits free? And how do I find the right doctor for me?
The government recently announced an increase in the bulk billing incentive—a small payment GPs receive when they bulk bill children, pensioners, and concession card holders. However, this is not free healthcare for everyone. It’s just a small extra payment for GPs who already bulk bill.
If your GP charges a gap fee, this change won’t make your visits free.
The increase isn’t enough to cover the real costs of care, so many GPs will still need to charge fees to keep their clinics open. This means that for many Australians—especially in places like Western Sydney, rural areas, and other underserved communities—access to a good GP still depends on where they live and what they can afford.
A great GP doesn’t just treat illness— they prevent it. A good GP will check for diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure regularly, offer Heart
Health Checks and screenings, ensure vaccinations are up to date, and take time to explain lifestyle changes that can keep patients well. A good GP also listens carefully and takes patient concerns seriously, rather than rushing through consultations.
A good GP looks at the whole picture, not just a quick fix. They help patients manage chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease, support mental health, and talk about overall wellness. Some clinics only have doctors, while others have a team that includes nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, and psychologists.
A clinic with a team approach can help patients with diabetes get support from a dietitian and a pharmacist, ensure people with heart disease receive regular check-ups, and assist those struggling with mental health.
A good GP is also honest about fees. Medicare rebates haven’t kept up with the real costs of running a clinic, which is why some GPs bulk bill while others charge a gap fee. Bulk billing clinics often have to see more patients
per hour just to survive, whereas privately billing clinics charge a gap to offer longer consults and better care. If a GP charges a fee, patients should ask why. Often, it’s because they refuse to rush care. Patients concerned about cost should inquire about longer consults, care plans covered by Medicare, and free health assessments.
In Western Sydney and other areas with higher health risks, people are getting sick earlier and dying younger. This isn’t fair—and it doesn’t have to be this way. A good GP can help change this by preventing illness before it happens, taking the time to listen, providing longer consults for complex health needs, and working with a team for better overall care.
While the government’s Medicare changes may help some people, they don’t fix the real issue—that quality
healthcare takes time, funding, and resources.
The best thing people can do for themselves and their families is to choose a GP wisely. Because when it comes to health, quality always matters.
At Rosedale Medical Practice, we focus on high-quality, patient-centred care, ensuring that people get the time and attention they deserve—not just quick consults. At Healthicare, a not-for-profit health charity, our team is tackling healthcare inequality by offering free services to vulnerable communities and helping people access prevention, education, and long-term support.
Our mission is simple: better healthcare for all. If you believe in that too, let’s work together to make it happen.

The Harman Foundation is proud to announce the transformation of its long-standing Community Food Pantry and Library at the HOPE Multicultural Hub, located at 17 Balmoral Street, Blacktown. Since its inception in 2022, this initiative has been a vital lifeline for vulnerable individuals and families in the Westpoint area, providing essential food items and encouraging literacy.
Thanks to the leadership and generous support of Parklea Correctional Centre Governor Wayne Taylor , the pantry and library were rebuilt and upgraded with a waterproof cabinet in January under the management of the prison’s Senior Manager Operational Support ServicesMichael Pugsley. This thoughtful donation from MTC Australia, who operate Parklea on behalf of Corrective Services NSW, is a game-changing gift for the community, enhancing the
accessibility and durability of this critical resource.
“We’ve been operating this pantry and library for over two years, but we couldn’t
afford to make it weatherproof,” said Maninder Singh, Chair of the Harman Foundation. “This incredible donation from MTC Australia, guided by Parklea Governor Wayne Taylor, has provided a much-needed upgrade. It’s an amazing gift for the community around the Westpoint area, ensuring this service can continue to support those in need, rain or shine.”
Governor Taylor said MTC Australia was proud to be able to assist the Harman Foundation by utilising the expertise of overseers in the prison’s metal shop, who helped the inmates construct the cabinet, and the facilities management team, who installed it.
“We have partnered with the Harman Foundation on several community projects over the past couple of years, including providing vegetables grown by inmates for food hampers, and donating wooden toys inmates made for Christmas presents,” Governor Taylor said.
“When they told us they needed a waterproof cabinet for their charity, I knew this was something we could easily do, and we were keen to help.”
The Harman Foundation’s services extend beyond the food pantry and library. The Foundation also provides essential support in the form of domestic and family violence services, chaplaincy care, and a 24/7 helpline. These initiatives are critical to supporting vulnerable community members in times of crisis, offering them safety, compassion, and guidance when they need it most.
The food pantry distributes
approximately 50 to 80 kilograms of groceries weekly, helping individuals and families who face financial hardship, mental health challenges, or are otherwise unable to access quality food. The pantry’s mission is to maintain dignity and respect for those struggling, providing them with essentials in a safe and welcoming way.
The library, which exchanges 30 to 40 books weekly, has become a beloved community asset, promoting reading and learning among both children and adults.
The Harman Foundation is now calling on businesses, corporates, and individuals to support this vital community initiative.
Regular donations, either monetary or in-kind (especially long-life food items), are crucial to ensuring the food pantry remains fully stocked. Your generosity can help us continue to serve the growing needs of our community and provide hope to those in need.
The waterproof cabinet is a testament to the positive impact of community partnerships. The project reflects the generosity and compassion of those involved at Parklea, creating lasting benefits for Blacktown’s residents.

Visual arts have evolved in many forms alongside time and technology. From traditional paintings and sculptures expand, blending creativity with innovation.
By Dr Chandrika Subramanium
As new tools and techniques emerge, visual arts not only preserve cultural heritage but also push the boundaries of storytelling and human imagination.
Dance, in particular, involves blending the artist’s imagination with classical traditions, creating a bridge to engage modern audiences. Successfully achieving this balance is a challenging task, as it requires preserving the rich heritage of classical forms while innovatively adapting them to resonate with contemporary sensibilities. This fusion demands a deep understanding of both the art’s roots and the evolving tastes of today’s viewers, making it a delicate yet rewarding endeavour.
In the past, classical music and dance were integral to cinema,
where creativity flourished while still adhering to classical boundaries. This delicate balance allowed filmmakers and performers to express their artistic vision within the rich tradition of classical forms, creating a unique blend of innovation and heritage on screen.
This presents a challenge for the modern dancer who wishes to perform film songs on stage. With the rapid evolution of time, technology, and shifting audience preferences, everything competes with the dynamic visual presentations of modern cinema. The dancer must find a way to connect traditional dance forms with contemporary expectations, navigating both artistic integrity and the demand for visually engaging performances.
Karthika Manoharan, a passionate classical dancer and teacher, in her recent show ‘Sudari’ , has made immense efforts to elevate the visual and emotional appeal of film songs over time. She has skillfully blended the grace of Bharatanatyam with the evolving dynamics of modern cinema, preserving the timeless connection between the art form and film while adding her own unique artistic touch. Through her
Bharatanatyam
sculptures to digital art and virtual reality, artistic expression continues to innovation.
dedication, she continues to bridge tradition and innovation, ensuring that Bharatanatyam remains a vital and captivating element in contemporary performances.
With over twenty years of experience in dance and boundless energy, the dancer has embarked on a captivating journey through time, bridging the gap between the classic black-and-white Indian films and today’s vibrant cinematic world. Her dance production, titled Sudari (meaning ‘beautiful woman’), successfully brought the essence of a beautiful and elegant woman to the stage, blending the timeless spirit of classical dance with the visual flair of modern cinema. Through Sudari, she has created a stunning fusion of the celluloid world and classical grace, capturing the elegance of both.
The expressions on stage shifted with every moment, reflecting the dynamic energy of the performance. The dancer’s face captured the evolving emotions of the narrative, from joy to sorrow, from longing to triumph, bringing the story to life with remarkable depth. The soulful melodies of yesteryears intertwined gracefully with intricate footwork, and expressive storytelling of Bharatanatyam, creating a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity.
The subtle changes in expression conveyed a powerful connection to the music and the dance, allowing the audience to feel the raw emotion in each fleeting moment. This constant transformation of expressions kept the audience engaged, adding layers of meaning to the performance with every gesture and glance.
A mixed bag of songs from various time periods, the musicians have truly justified their roles by breathing life into the show. Their skillful arrangements and performances have seamlessly woven together different eras, adding depth and emotion to the production. With each note, they have enhanced the narrative, making the fusion of classical dance and cinematic music even more compelling. This fusion not only honoured the past but also brought it to life in a way that resonated deeply with the contemporary viewer.
Sharujan Mahendraj, the vocalist; Janakan Sudanthiraraj, the mridangist; Kiritharan Sharma, the tabla player; Venkatesh Sridharan, the flutist; and Agalya Pavalan, the violinist, all played pivotal roles in making the show a success. Their combined talents enriched the performance, bringing together the power of music and dance in harmony. Additionally, Seran Sribalan, a seasoned dancer and dance teacher , skillfully orchestrated the dance as the Nattuvanar, guiding the dancers with precision and expertise, ensuring the seamless integration of classical tradition and modern expression. The music support surely maintained the spirit of the original renditions, enhanced the visual impact
As quoted in her brochure, the production is not just a performance; it is a celebration of art, culture, and creativity. It also provides a platform for local young artists to showcase
their talents and passion, offering them an opportunity to shine alongside seasoned performers.
The highlight of the production is the visual treat of the cinema songs, where the essence of the original tracks is preserved, while not compromising the quality and integrity of traditional Bharatanatyam. This careful balance ensures that the cinematic appeal of the songs is enhanced without relying on the superficial aspects of their original presentation.
The captivating performance was graced by Councillor Sujan Selvan from Cumberland Council, with the curtain-raiser introduction by Shivani Dheeraj. As the monochrome magic of old film reels merged seamlessly with the vibrant hues of today’s screens, the stage became a visual feast for the audience.

Rupi, the iconic dhol player from Australia, is celebrating an incredible 25-year journey in the music world. As the founder and leader of Platinum Dholis, Australia’s longestrunning and most successful dhol ensemble, Rupi has transformed the Australian music scene with his dynamic performances and passion for the dhol.
Rupi’s musical journey began at the age of 14 when he started learning the guitar, but it wasn’t until he was 19 that he discovered the dhol, an Indian percussion instrument that would change the course of his life. Growing up in England during the 1980s, Rupi was heavily influenced by live bands like Alaap and Apna Sangeet. His musical path took a defining turn when he traveled back to England and met renowned musicians Aman Hayer and Sukshinder Shinda, who would become key influences in his career. After jamming with these musicians, Rupi knew he had found his true calling—he was determined to bring the vibrant and energetic sound of the dhol to Australia.
In 2000, Rupi achieved a major career milestone when he performed at the Sydney
Olympics. This performance cemented his reputation as one of the leading dhol players in the country. From there, he quickly made waves in the wedding industry and became a sought-after performer at club events, corporate functions, international artist tours, and destination weddings.
Rupi’s career reached new heights in 2007 when he joined Lehmber Hussainpuri’s Australian tour, performing alongside a UK live band. This marked another major highlight in his career. In 2008, Rupi took on a new role as a promoter, partnering with Kish to bring Tantra Nights to life, an event that introduced international artists to Australian audiences. Over the years, Rupi has brought global stars like Jassi Sidhu, Aman Hayer, Imran Khan, DJ Sanj, and RDB to Australia, enhancing the country’s music scene and fostering a deeper appreciation for the dhol and Bhangra music.
As a dhol player and promoter, Rupi’s impact has been far-reaching. His electrifying performances became a fixture at events across Australia, including Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, and Perth, and he even took his talents abroad, performing in the USA, Fiji, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK. Rupi’s unparalleled skill on the dhol, along with his unique ability to engage and energize audiences, led to frequent performances in Melbourne, where he performed monthly for three years. His popularity continued to grow, as did his reputation for delivering exceptional performances.
However, Rupi’s journey has not been without its challenges. In 2017, he underwent urgent heart surgery after complications arose, leaving him hospitalized for over 40 days with a rare and life-threatening condition. Despite the setbacks, Rupi’s unwavering love for music and the dhol kept him going. Supported by a team of six specialists, he battled through a difficult recovery process. Just a year later, Rupi was diagnosed with heart failure, but he never let this stop him from doing what he
loves. His passion for performing and bringing joy to others continued to fuel his resilience, and he remains one of the most celebrated dhol players in Australia.
Today, Rupi’s group, Platinum Dholis, stands as one of the most accomplished and respected dhol ensembles in Australia. The team consists of Rupi, Krish, Ekam, and Rajee, all of whom bring decades of experience, dedication, and precision to every performance. Together, they have set the gold standard for dhol performances in the country, collaborating with top DJs, Bhangra teams, and global artists. Platinum Dholis have performed at over 7,000 events and have been featured on Australia’s top radio stations, TV shows, and newspapers. They’ve also appeared in Bollywood commercials and worked with major corporations such as Commonwealth Bank, Optus, Uber, Google, and Westfield.
Rupi and his team have performed alongside some of the most iconic names in the music
industry, including Imran Khan, RDB, Bally Sagoo, Sukhbir, Lehmber Hussainpuri, Hard Kaur, and Jazzy B. They have also been a part of major cultural events such as Mardi Gras and collaborated with media outlets like 2 Day FM, SBS, and Channel 10.
Rupi and Platinum Dholis have revolutionized the dhol scene in Australia, pushing boundaries and creating a new standard of excellence. Through their dedication and unmatched talent, they have become synonymous with high-energy, crowd-pleasing performances that continue to captivate audiences around the world.
As Rupi celebrates 25 years in the industry, his legacy is one of resilience, passion, and innovation. From a young boy discovering the dhol to becoming an iconic figure in the music world, Rupi’s journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. His story serves as an inspiration to all aspiring musicians and performers, proving that with passion and perseverance, anything is possible.

In a dazzling celebration of identity and pride, Trikone Australia once again brought vibrant South Asian LGBTQIA+ representation to Oxford Street at the 47th Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade this past weekend. Their “Breaking Free: Pride Uncaged” float captured the essence of this year’s Mardi Gras theme, “Free to Be,” transforming a traditional ‘Pinjra’ (birdcage) into a powerful symbol of liberation and joy.
Established in 2007, Trikone Australia has been a cornerstone for LGBTQIA+ South Asians in Australia, creating a safe space where
cultural and queer identities can coexist without compromise. For many participants, the parade represents a rare opportunity to openly celebrate all aspects of their identities at once.
“We’re fuelled by our strong belief that ‘if you can’t see it, you can’t be it,’” explains Zahra Babuji, Trikone Australia’s Chair. “So, we make sure thousands see us for who we are – LGBTQIA+ South Asians in Australia, unapologetically celebrating our identity without having to compartmentalise our queer and brown expressions.”
The significance of this visibility
extends beyond the spectacle of colourful costumes, Bollywood dance, and dhol drums. As South Asians are projected to become Australia’s largest migrant group, Trikone’s advocacy work remains crucial in fostering acceptance and understanding both within the South Asian community and broader Australian society.
For many marchers, this year’s parade was a deeply personal milestone. Mohan Kumar, a 34-yearold participant of Tamil background, shared: “This is the first time ever I had the courage to express my true self unapologetically, breaking free from the cage I’d built in my mind to proudly walk in the parade with my head held high.”
The float featured participants from diverse South Asian backgrounds, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, highlighting the rich tapestry of cultures within the community. Priya Gakhar, one of the few female dhol players in Australia, described the experience as “pure magic,” while Mahesh WhiteRadhakrishnan celebrated wearing a sari in public for the first time since childhood.
Despite significant legal advancements in some South Asian countries, such as the decriminalisation of same-sex relations in India and Nepal, LGBTQIA+ individuals still face discrimination and lack comprehensive legal protections across much of the region. This reality makes Trikone’s presence at events like Mardi Gras all the more impactful.
“Despite the few hateful comments, I chose all the love and support that I received and ignored the ignorant bunch,” Kumar noted, reflecting the resilience that characterises the community.
For younger members like Smriti Adhikari and Ishika Timsina, both 23 and of Nepali background, marching with Trikone since 2021 has provided a sense of belonging that sustains them throughout the year. “We get to be proud of being brown and queer in equal parts,” they said.
As Sydney’s streets returned to normal after the parade, the impact of Trikone’s presence continues to
resonate. In the words of Gaurav Sen, who came out at 34: “Marching with Trikone allowed this opportunity to proudly merge my ethnic heritage with my rainbow coexistence.”
With each passing year, Trikone
Australia’s participation in the Mardi Gras Parade serves as both a celebration of how far the community has come and a reminder of the ongoing journey toward full acceptance and equality –embodying their ethos that joy itself can be a form of rebellion.
In a move to enhance healthcare accessibility for migrant and refugee women, extend the Health in My Language (HiML) program
This funding will support the Multicultural Centre for Women’s Health in delivering the program throughout all states and territories in 2025-2026.
The Health in My Language program is designed to bridge the gap in healthcare by removing language and cultural barriers. It recruits and trains bicultural women’s health educators who lead educational sessions in various languages spoken by culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities.
These sessions focus on key health topics like sexual and reproductive health, cancer screening, and COVID-19, ensuring that women receive information that is not only accessible but also culturally appropriate.
Since its inception, HiML has helped thousands of women make informed health decisions. This funding extension will allow the program to expand its reach, offering critical health education to even more communities.
The program is delivered in collaboration
with several key organizations across the country:
4True Relationships and Reproductive Health (QLD)
4Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS) (NSW)

The Minns Labor Government has announced the appointment of 15 learn-toswim providers to deliver a new statewide program aimed at reducing drowning risks across New South Wales.
Under the initiative, people most at risk of drowning—including those from low socioeconomic backgrounds, multicultural communities, First Nations people, and residents in regional areas—will have access to up to 10 free swimming and water safety lessons.
Recent drowning statistics highlight the need for targeted action, revealing that individuals born overseas and those living in disadvantaged areas face the highest risk of drowning.
This program is designed to directly support those communities by providing essential skills in swimming
and water safety.
Minister for Sport Steve Kamper emphasized the importance of
the initiative, stating: “The NSW Government is supporting communities at the highest risk of drowning by funding free learn-to-swim lessons across
the state. This program will not only help more residents swim safely next summer but also provide much-needed cost-ofliving relief.”

Martin Zaiter praised the initiative, highlighting the role of the Parramatta Aquatic Centre in fostering water safety: “With our diverse community representing 128 nationalities and speaking 117 languages, it is vital that we support people of all ages and backgrounds in learning to swim. This funding will not only save lives but also help build lifelong skills.”
Similarly, Royal Life Saving NSW CEO Michael Ilinsky welcomed the investment, stressing its long-term impact: “Taking high-quality programs directly to communities in need will ensure more people gain vital water safety skills. This initiative breaks down barriers, providing participants with their
first aquatic experience and preparing them for a lifetime of safe aquatic participation.”
The learn-to-swim providers will begin delivering lessons in the coming months. NSW residents can find their nearest participating program by visiting www. sport.nsw.gov.au/learn-to-swim-program.
This initiative marks a significant step toward improving water safety and reducing preventable drownings across the state. By ensuring atrisk communities have access to free swimming education, the NSW Government is making water safety more inclusive and accessible for all.

146% from 2022 to 2024.
4Iron and steel exports have increased by 189% during the same period.
These savings are directly impacting Australians, reducing costs for consumers and creating more local jobs. As negotiations for a new free trade agreement continue, even more trade opportunities are expected to open up for Australian businesses.
Australia’s relationship with India is at an all-time high. Since taking office, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in person ten times, including at two Annual Leaders’ Summits. Both leaders have emphasized the importance of deepening ties, with Australia continuing to engage closely with India through the Quad, working toward a stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
Australia’s strong Indian community plays a vital role in fostering economic and cultural connections between the two nations. The Roadmap builds on this foundation, ensuring that businesses and individuals alike can benefit from enhanced collaboration.
The Roadmap outlines practical
measures to boost tourism, such as increasing direct flights between Australia and India, promoting Australia as a key travel destination, and supporting Australian sports businesses. Indian tourists currently contribute over $1.5 billion annually to Australia’s economy, and there is substantial potential for further growth as India’s middle class expands.
Several Australian businesses are already benefiting from enhanced trade relations with India:
4Marquis Macadamias: Due to reduced import tariffs, the company was able to send its first container shipment of macadamias to India in September 2023.
4Foodie Trails: This Melbourne-based business helps visitors explore diverse food cultures through walking tours and events, promoting regional tourism.
4Entura (Hydro Tasmania): The company has leveraged Australia’s India-Australia Renewable Energy Partnership to support India’s clean energy goals through hydro power projects.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized the importance of this
initiative: “India is an essential partner as we diversify our trade links to boost prosperity for all Australians. This Roadmap is critical to helping us fully realize our potential with India, which will be a boon to Australia’s economy, our businesses, jobs, and our prosperity.”
Foreign Minister Senator Penny Wong added: “By boosting our economic ties with India, we are not only creating more jobs and opportunities for Australians, but also advancing our shared interest in a peaceful, stable, and prosperous IndoPacific.”
As Australia and India continue to strengthen their economic relationship, the launch of A New Roadmap for Australia’s Economic Engagement with India marks a pivotal step toward a thriving partnership that benefits both nations.
It is common for Australian children to grow up with languages other than English in their family lives. More than one-fifth of Australians report speaking a language other than English at home.
But when it comes time to start school, it’s common for parents to worry about raising a child to be bilingual or multilingual.
They may wonder, am I harming my child’s English development if I speak another language at home?
The short answer is no. Research shows
speaking more than one language doesn’t hinder a child’s academic progress – in fact, it can even help.
What does the research say?
Up until the 1980s, some studies incorrectly suggested early exposure to more than one language could harm a child’s academic achievement. But these findings have since been widely criticised because many of the children in the studies came from economically disadvantaged backgrounds (and so were already disadvantaged in terms of their schooling).
More recent Australian research has
found when socioeconomic status is accounted for, multilingual children are “indistinguishable from their monolingual peers” in literacy and numeracy by the time they are eleven years old. This is provided they have adequate English vocabulary skills by the time they finish Year 2.
Some studies show multilingual students even surpass monolingual children in different academic areas. This includes English reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation as well as numeracy. Research suggests multilingual students’ enhanced mental flexibility from switching between
languages may explain their higher academic performance later in school, but this is not yet confirmed.
Do you need to learn one language before starting the other?
Research shows children can learn multiple languages at the same time, starting from infancy. This means you don’t have to wait for a child to become fluent in one before you start learning another.
Similarly, a child does not have to be a highly skilled English speaker to start to learn to read in English. They can develop their spoken and written/reading language skills at the same time.
It is also important to look at children’s skills across all the languages they know.
Research on children aged up to 30 months found multilingual children often had smaller vocabularies in English than their monolingual peers. But they had a healthy range when assessed on words they knew in all languages.
A common misconception is multilingual children may “confuse” words between languages, but this is not the case. They actually learn quite quickly whom they can communicate with in each language, and switch between languages without much effort.
For example, Valeria’s niece Aurora is four and is already fluent in Hungarian, Spanish and Ukrainian. There are videos of Aurora speaking Spanish with her Venezuelan father and grandmother, turning to respond to her grandfather in Hungarian, and switching to Ukrainian to speak with her mother, all in one conversation.
How can I help my child learn multiple languages?
Research shows it is important a child receives lots of exposure to each language through meaningful interactions with people who speak those languages.
Also, if you’re worried your child isn’t getting enough English exposure outside school, do not abandon your home language. Instead, create other English opportunities, such as in playgroups, daycare, sports teams or other out-ofschool activities.
Ultimately, the best thing parents can do to support their children’s multilingual learning is build a community filled with native speakers of English and the home language(s).
There is no clear definition of the amount needed, but it should be regular – for example, everyday talk with parents or visits or phone calls with grandparents who share the home language.
Staying consistently connected to this community of people who value each language, especially after children start school, will also support a child’s motivation to keep growing in each language.

FDevelopers could face financial penalties for failing to deliver homes and unfairly profiting off buyers under reforms being considered by the NSW Government.
eedback is being sought on stronger protections for consumers in off the plan contracts for homes and land in NSW, to guide the delivery of new housing and prevent lengthy delays that leave people out of pocket.
An off the plan contract is an agreement for the sale and purchase of a property that is yet to be developed or constructed. These contracts can apply to the sale of a proposed lot in a strata or community land scheme or to the sale of land in a conventional subdivision.
The reforms are being designed to help increase housing supply by providing greater certainty and clearer deadlines for home buyers and to free up land for development faster by removing outdated restrictions on development sites.
The reforms are intended to help more people achieve the Australian dream of home ownership and build greater confidence in the housing market by improving protections for buyers and preventing developers from delaying homes they have been contracted to deliver.
About five per cent of 180,000 residential purchases in NSW last financial year were off the plan contracts which allow a buyer to commit to purchasing a property before the complex is built or land is subdivided.
Potential reforms being released for comment aim to tighten contract rules to give buyers a clearer understanding of when they can expect to move into their new home, reducing uncertainty and the risk of being left behind in the market when a contract is cancelled.
This could include scrapping the ability for
developers to draw the contract out with indefinite sunset clauses which give buyers no clear path forward, or ability to exit the arrangement.
Other proposed changes the NSW Government is considering include:
4Making sunset clauses mandatory in contracts so that buyers can withdraw if sunset events do not occur by a set time
4Requiring developers to disclose the status of the development against construction milestones so buyers have a better understanding of timeframes and potential risks
4Limiting a developer’s ability to extend sunset dates only for certain reasons beyond the developer’s control such as weather or supply issues, and imposing time limits on extensions
4Requiring developers to take reasonable steps to meet dates by potentially introducing penalties for inaction.
The Government is also looking at unlocking potential development sites by making it easier to remove private, outdated agreements from land titles (known as obsolete restrictive covenants) which can limit how land is used or developed.
Covenants can continue to bind future landowners indefinitely, even if they become outdated – for example, an obsolete covenant may prevent more than one property from being built on the land or ban the use of certain building materials.
To support the reforms, the Office of the Registrar General has released a discussion paper called ‘Contracts and Covenants: Reforms to support development of land’ outlining the options.
The community is invited to respond to survey questions or upload a submission on the reform proposals and share their experiences on the NSW Government’s Have Your Say platform.
The consultation will lay the groundwork for legislation to be developed in 2025.
The Contracts and Covenants consultation is open until 7 March 2025.

Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Jihad Dib said:
“Buying a home is one of the most stressful experiences for an individual, these proposals are designed to provide greater certainty and consistency. This review is about making sure home buyers have the right protections and information they need to make informed decisions.”
“Off the plan contracts play a crucial role in supporting essential housing supply initiatives in NSW. They allow buyers to purchase property early in the development process, while giving developers the confidence and financial security to build.”
“We know that most developers do the right thing, but we don’t want situations where businesses try to run down the clock on a contract to sell to a higher bidder or mislead consumers by unfairly changing the goalposts for when they can move into their dream home.”
“These reforms are designed to provide greater transparency as well as encourage the delivery of new homes. These proposals are about encouraging developers to be upfront about timelines and challenges to assist homeowners.”
“We encourage people to have their say on these proposals which aim to boost consumer confidence in the off the plan contract process and help NSW achieve our housing targets.”
Registrar General Danusia Cameron said: “Off the plan buyers need more information and support than buyers of established homes because they are not able to inspect a property before committing to buy it.”
“It is important that the laws governing off the plan contracts also arm buyers with appropriate safeguards, meet the needs of the community and address emerging issues in the sector to ensure there is continued confidence in the process.”
