that. Pull up a glass and learn a little about the glorious grapes of the 48th state. A soil scientist named Dr. Gordon Dutt from the University of Arizona introduced winemaking to the area in 1973 when he began an experimental vineyard on a ranch in the southern part of the state. He found the altitude and soil similar to Burgundy, France, and thus discovered fertile ground for Arizona’s first commercial vineyard in 1979. The doors to Sonoita Vineyards Winery opened in 1983.

eems like more and more families have a grandmother or grandfather moving in with them these days. In fact, some 20 percent of the U.S. population lives in a multigenerational home, meaning three or more generations under one roof, according to budgetdumpster.com. As our aging parents live longer, they need a safe place to call home when it’s not always possible for them to live on their own. Retirement communities or nursing homes are not necessarily a good fit and they can be cost prohibitive. Luckily, today’s living arrangements offer lots of possibilities for keeping mom or dad close by, while also allowing them to have some independence and you to have some privacy. Having a separate but small home or apartment on your property is the perfect arrangement for many elderly people looking to move closer to their grown children. Known as casitas, granny apartments, or flats, mother-in-law cabins, or carriage houses, depending on what part of the country you live in, these tiny homes can be the perfect spot for keeping an eye on your aging mother or father. Casitas are often one room with a small bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen. They are usually separate from the main house and offer your parent privacy and independence but also the assurance of knowing if they have a medical or other emergency, a family member is close by to help. Parents are able to come over for meals but then have their own space to relax at the end of the day. Mother-in-law suites are another trend in multi-generational living. Here the living space is part of the main home, but usually set off on one side or part of the house so the older person can have their own space and freedom. Fully converted garages and comfortable finished basements often with their own entrances are also popular alternatives for aging parents. Having your aging parent living under your roof or right on your property will certainly give you peace of mind that they are safe and sound. In addition, a casita is also a sound investment as many home buyers now look for these when searching for a new house. A granny flat can also be used for different purposes, such as an art studio, an office, a rental apartment, or even a place for a young adult who’s moved back home. Not a bad investment any way you look at it!

In the years since, the young industry has blossomed to approximately 1,000 acres under vine and almost 100 bonded wineries. While you can sample and buy Arizona varietals at numerous wineries, tasting rooms and liquor stores, there are three distinct areas in the state where the grapes grow: Sonoita, Willcox, and the Verde Valley. SONOITA Sonoita and Elgin are southeast of Tucson and two and a half hours south of Phoenix. The area has an altitude of 4,900 ft. and is surrounded by national forest. There are currently about a dozen vineyards located there with notables including Dos Cabezas, Hops & Vine, and Callaghan Vineyards. WILLCOX This agriculturally rich southeast corner of the state was known for apple orchards and corn mazes before wine took root as well. It produces the most grapes of the three wine regions

IN GOOD TASTE

Prescott Highland Games & Celtic Faire Prescott | Sept. 28 & 29 PrescottAreaCelticSociety.com

VERDE VALLEY The choices increase quite a bit when you head north of Phoenix to the Verde Valley growing area, which encompasses the towns of Sedona, Jerome, Cottonwood and more. You’ll find almost 20 wineries and tasting rooms throughout the scenic canyons at 3,800 ft. Be sure to check out the popular Arizona Stronghold, Caduceus Cellars and Javelina Leap Vineyard, to name just a few. Each growing region offers a tasting trail to follow, similar to that in Napa or Sonoma, but if you’re looking for a little more guidance – and transportation – check out AZWineryTours. com. You’ll also meet experts at each winery that can educate you on grapes and blends from the familiar Cabernets to a tantalizing Tempranillo. No need to travel to France or even California when we have so many choices on the vine right here in sunny Arizona. Cheers!
