Gain practical knowledge of desert soils, hydrology, horticulture and sustainable practices to start creating more resilient and environmentally responsible outdoor spaces.Garden experts offer hands-on lessons, covering water harvesting and irrigation in real-life landscaping scenarios that empower students to do it on their own with confidence.

Installing a sustainable desert landscape requires knowledge about cultural conditions and the proper sequence of installation. In this five-week program, our experts guide you through appropriate methods and progression of building a landscape. Students have the opportunity to install a landscape with Habitat for Humanity. Learn how to install earthworks, irrigation systems and plants. This program has prerequisites that must be completed prior to registration. Registrants must have previously earned the following certificates: Planting and Maintenance Certificate and Sustainable Desert Landscapes Certificate.

As you enjoy the bountiful harvest from your winter vegetable gardens, you need to start thinking about spring planting. Horticulturist Carol Stuttard teaches you how to grow your own healthy, organic spring vegetable garden, including planting, soil preparation, varieties to plant and, most importantly, the right time to get seeds in the ground. Experience the euphoria of growing Euphorbia. Plants in this low-maintenance, diverse genus range from small globular shapes to massive trees and can be planted in the ground or containers for added interest and bold profiles. Learn how to select the varieties that will ensure fresh citrus for up to nine months. Making a healthy habitat for a desert tortoise involves offering a wide variety of plants for both food and shelter. Growing these plants in your garden not only provides a home for your desert tortoise but also adds color and interest to your garden. Christine Brehm explains how to create a plant palette for both you and your tortoise to enjoy year-round. Limit 30.

Learn how to grow basil, oregano, chives, cilantro, lemon balm, mint, lavender, parsley and rosemary and how to pick the best pots, planters or window boxes in which to grow them in. Join Angelica Elliott on a walk through the Garden as she identifies and recommends the best plants and gives instruction about growing them in your garden. Limit 20.

Growing Milkweeds Tuesday | Feb. 19 | 6 - 8 p.m.

Members: $30 | General Public: $38 Asclepias, or milkweeds, are vital host plants for queen and monarch butterfly larvae. The flowers they produce provide nectar for a number of insects such as bees, wasps and beetles. Learn which milkweeds can be successfully grown in the low desert and the best way to propagate them. Milkweed seed and cuttings will be provided. Instructed by Natalie Melkonoff and Steve Blackwell, program coordinators for the Great Milkweed Grow Out. Limit 30.

Plant Grafting

This series walks you through each phase of designing the ideal landscape to complement your home in the Sonoran Desert, assigning relevant exercises along the way. In this hands-on class, Steve Sheard discusses and demonstrates how you can have more fruit varieties though the use of various grafting and budding methods, including T-budding, whip, bark and cleft grafting.

Explore the winter wonderland of Sedona’s Red Rocks with Robert McBride. Discover techniques to capture winter scenes, from general photographic skills, to equipment, to composition and the use of natural light. While all digital camera owners are welcome, this class is most appropriate for DSLR cameras.

Participants should bring DSLR camera, lenses and tripod. This is an offsite program and transportation from the Garden is included.

Discussion includes the rule of thirds, the Fibonacci sequence, leading lines, color harmony, tension, positive and negative space, journalistic photography styles, power points, post-processing concepts and more. Members: $60 | General Public: $75 Your camera’s many buttons and dials might recall an airplane cockpit, but with a little guidance, your confidence using them will soar. Learn about different features, functions and proper setup to create perfectly exposed photographs, with balanced shutter speeds, apertures and ISO. It is estimated that more than five million dogs enter animal shelters each year in the United States. The field experience will help participants find birds, as well as develop a vocabulary to describe and identify species in the wild.

Students are encouraged to bring binoculars.

Make birding an immersive practice by gaining knowledge of avian families and the environments they inhabit. Arizona’s habitats include low desert, high elevation tundra, rivers, urban and rural spaces, and transition zones. Identify the key characteristics of Arizona’s habitats and the birds commonly found in these areas, including seasonal migration fluctuations.

The field experience will focus on habitats birds frequently occupy. Transportation to the field trip site is not provided.

The walk is loaded with nature interpretation and hands-on demonstrations, followed by a delicious lunch at the ranch’s historic cowboy-inspired dining room. This loop walk is approximately one and a half miles long with minimal elevation change but does have some short sections of loose rocks and gravel. Lunch is included. Transportation from the Garden departs promptly at 7:30 a.m. and returns at 4 p.m. Self-drivers, please arrive at Rancho de los Caballeros by 9:15 a.m. Limit 20.

Members: $35 | General Public: $44 More than an architectural marvel, Tovrea Castle boasts must-see gardens containing more than 5,000 cactus of 100 plus varieties. Docents from the Tovrea Carraro Society lead a tour of the castle main floor and basement, and then a Garden guide gives a private cactus garden tour. This is a walking tour. Participants must wear closed-toe shoes, pants and be able to walk unaided over possibly loose and uneven footing.

Montezuma Castle and Well Friday | Feb. 8 | 7:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Members: $199 | General Public: $249 Montezuma Castle, a towering 20-room dwelling carved into a limestone cliffside, tells the story of the innovative and hardy Sinagua people who once lived there. Join archaeologist Matt Guebard on a private tour of this ancient archaeological site and hear the history of the 14 th -century dwelling and the culture that created this significant monument.

Then head to Montezuma Well, a natural limestone sinkhole that supports a variety of unique species not found anywhere else in the world. Guebard will share with you the current science and research taking place today at Montezuma Castle and Well.

The hike to Montezuma Castle is approximately one-quarter mile on an easy paved trail. The hike to Montezuma Well has a series of stairs to climb.
