Dear Friends, This past year has been charged with excitement, and we are pleased to share with you the highlights of 2018 in the pages that follow. Without a doubt, Electric Desert | A Light and Sound Experience by Klip Collective defined the year with light, color and sound, filling the Garden from early October through the rest of the season. Attendance skyrocketed, just as it had with other blockbuster exhibits, including the glass art of Dale Chihuly and the Field of Light presentation by Bruce Munro. And the strong rains in the fall and winter produced a spring superbloom at the Garden unlike any experienced in recent memory. In addition to our exhibits doing so well, the other three pillars of the Garden’s mission also excelled in 2018: Education: we served more than 18,000 school children and their caregivers on Sonoran Desert Adventure field trips, relaunched the new and improved Desert Landscape School and added many exciting offerings for learners of all ages. Conservation: we co-published the Regional Open Space Strategy for all of Maricopa County in collaboration with our partners in the Central Arizona Conservation Alliance, which maintains its headquarters at the Garden. Research: our scientists continued to perform cutting-edge investigations and publish their study results from the field and lab in population genetics, taxonomy, ethnobotany and plant physiology—while expanding the Garden’s herbarium and research library holdings. Las Noches de las Luminarias welcomed a record number of guests in the month of December, when the soft glow of 8,000 candles each night melded seamlessly with the high-energy of Electric Desert. We were impressed to see unprecedented crowds visit on Feb. 12 to celebrate the Garden’s 80th anniversary. 2018 was one of the busiest, most exciting years we have ever enjoyed. None of this success would have been possible without more than 700 volunteers who donated more than 67,000 hours of service in 2018 or the amazing and generous friends who invest their time, talent and funds in supporting our mission. LAS NOCHES DE LAS LUMINARIAS
ince 1978, nearly 2 million visitors have made Las Noches de las Luminarias— the annual holiday celebration at Desert Botanical Garden—a part of their holiday traditions. Luminaria has also been the backdrop to many memorable events such as engagements, holiday parties and birthdays. What began as an idea from former executive director Rodney Engard, staff and volunteers to create a Southwestern holiday event has grown into a 29-night celebration with more than 8,000 bags and nearly 200,000 twinkle lights, illuminating the trails.

Planning for the first event began in the summer of 1978. Many hours went into folding bags, baking and preparing for the one-night event. Seven hundred bags lit the grounds, and more than 600 visitors flocked to the Garden to see it glow. As guests strolled the trails, volunteers passed out cookies and hot cocoa. Volunteers and staff still ignite the operation to make Luminaria possible. More than 100 staff and volunteers come together to help the Garden shine for visitors from around the world.

ELECTRIC DESERT
he Garden began presenting art in 2002 and has since featured 37 exhibitions—enticing art and nature lovers alike with displays throughout the Garden’s trails and in Ottosen Gallery. Electric Desert | A Light and Sound Experience by Klip Collective, the Garden’s latest blockbuster exhibition, deployed 12 projectors, 43 speakers and more than 300 lights to transform cactus and desert into a living canvas through through illumination and original music. Electric Desert included seven site-specific locations, with each installation inspired by the Garden and desert environment. More than 190,000 visitors were wowed by the immersive experience, from October 2018 through May 2019.

n 2018, the Garden’s Education Department focused its efforts on ensuring that the more than 18,000 students, teachers and chaperones that visited the Garden left with an increased knowledge of the life and beauty growing in the Sonoran Desert. Eighty-eight percent of educators suveyed said that the Sonoran Desert Adventure field trip has inspired their students to actively care for the environment. Seventy-six percent responded that they plan to increase the use of Sonoran Desert topics in their curriculum as a direct result of their field trip.

S PAC E S O F O P P O R T U N I T Y n this fifth year, Spaces of Opportunity, an incubator farm, farmers market and community garden, is transforming a food desert into a food oasis. Located on 18 acres of land in south Phoenix, Spaces is engineering a neighborhood food system, where gardeners and farmers are celebrated as artisans. The Harvest/Nuestra Cosecha Farmers Market and community supported agriculture subscription is a cooperative dedicated to growing without chemicals, mentoring of farmers and marketing healthy produce to local residents.

Fund the Farm is a party that raises funds to support Spaces. The 2018 event supported efforts to begin construction on a shade structure for the Farmers Market, as well as a cool storage unit scheduled to be completed in 2019. 2,800 community members and groups volunteered with Spaces in 2018. 67 individuals and families are growing pride and produce at the farm. The farm looks forward to enhancing the farmers market and increasing the community’s participation in the coming years.

REMEMBERING BETTY KITCHELL
n 1948, Betty and Sam Kitchell escaped the bitter cold of Massachusetts, seeking new adventures in the desert. They came with, as Betty said, “no money and no jobs,” but instead a desire to teach their children specific values: gratitude, generosity, curiosity, a love for the arts and to know the beauty of nature. Betty and Sam, wanted to inspire their children—Jon, Ann, Suki, Kaaren and Jane—to support their community. The Kitchells became involved in the community, and through Sam’s leadership on the Board of the Heard Museum, they were introduced to the Garden and became members in 1988. Though Sam passed away in 2006, the couple’s example of hard work, passion for life and support in their community continues on in their children and grandchildren. Betty joined the Board in 1989 and served until 1993. She co-chaired the 1990 Dinner on the Desert,
and her commitment to the Garden inspired her children. Following her example, her son Jon, became a Garden Trustee, too. In 1993, he and sister Ann, followed in their mother’s footsteps and co-chaired Dinner on the Desert. As Betty approached her 95th birthday in 2015, her children decided they wanted to celebrate in a big way and also honor the memory of their father and sister Jane. This desire led the family to make a $1 million commitment to The Saguaro Initiative to renovate the historic area of the Garden. Home to cardon cactus almost as big as Betty Kitchell’s heart, The Sam & Betty Kitchell Family Heritage Garden is a living example of the values that Sam and Betty instilled into their children.

COLUMBINE GARDEN CLUB In its 80 years, the Garden has become a safe haven for endangered plant species and continues to protect many species that are threatened with extinction. Thanks to members of our community, we do not do this alone. Each year, caring groups and individuals generously contribute to drive the Garden’s mission. Since the early 80s, Columbine Garden Club (CGC)— a member of the Garden Clubs of America—has encouraged and supported the Garden in many ways. In April 2018, CGC took its support to a higher level. Columbine hosted “A Day In Full Bloom,” a celebration and luncheon that combined creative floral artistry with the beauty of the Arizona desert landscape. The $75,000 raised at the event was all donated to the Garden. In appreciation, the Garden named a section of Greenhouse West “Columbine Garden Club Bay 3.” This bay houses rare Chilean cactus that are a treasured part of the collection and critical to the Garden’s recognition as the global center for cactus research and conservation. Thanks to their new home, interested visitors can take a behind-the-scenes tour to learn about these plants and see how they are thriving. It is truly an honor to have the continued support of Columbine Garden Club and DESERT BOTANICAL GARDEN ANNUAL REPORT 2018 its members.

Desert Botanical Garden is committed to accomplishing the goals set forth in the strategic plan by January 2024. This five-year plan is ambitious yet readily achievable. It is lofty in its reach but also grounded in the Garden’s history and traditions. It is holistic, drawing inspiration from the four corners of our mission, while forging a new path for the Garden. This new plan comes on the heels of 20 years of dramatic growth. In contrast, the 2019 to 2023 plan focuses on innovation in programs rather than the Garden’s physical space.
The Board, co-chairs of the Strategic Planning Steering Committee and members of the Garden’s senior staff undertook the visioning process. “Sustainability, The Triple Bottom Line” was selected as the unifying theme of this plan. Simultaneously, “big ideas” for advancing the Garden’s mission in the next five years were collected from Garden staff, trustees, volunteers and members of the community. As this list was being compiled, no idea was off limits, and all were evaluated by the Committee. Some were deemed operational, some were moved forward to be vetted by the Strategic Planning Task Forces and others were put on hold to be considered after 2023. We are proud of the dedicated people who generously devoted countless hours to create this strategic plan. We thank each and every person who has been a part of this endeavor. FINANCIAL REPORT We are pleased to share the Garden’s financial statements for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 2018. The Consolidated Statement of Activities shows total revenues for the year exceeded total expenditures by $1.7 million. This positive result was driven by healthy admission, membership and contribution levels. This continues a positive trend of strengthening relationships with the community. The Garden’s expenditures continue to be managed with careful stewardship in mind while seizing opportunities for growth and greater mission impact. The Consolidated Statement of Financial Position shows the Garden’s fiscal position remains solid, with more than $49.2 million in total assets and approximately $5.7 million in total liabilities. Unrestricted cash and Board-designated cash are sufficient for normal operations and provide funds for repair and maintenance of major building systems as facilities age. The Garden Foundation manages endowment assets conservatively with an annual target of a 4.5 percent distribution from the Foundation to the Garden’s operating budget. The Garden’s total debt of $1.04 million represents just 2.1 percent of the total combined assets of the Garden and Foundation. Approximately one-half of the debt was short term funds to help with cash needs during the summer. The Garden’s financial health and success in achieving its mission would not be possible without your commitment, dedication and generosity. Desert Botanical Garden is committed to full transparency in financial stewardship. Our complete audited financial statements are posted on the website. There you will also find the Garden’s annual IRS Form 990 filing. Please visit dbg.org to review these documents. The Consolidated Statement of Financial Activities reports the results of Garden Operations excluding the effect of depreciation expense. Depreciation refers to the systematic allocation of the cost of long-lived assets, including buildings, furniture, fixtures, and equipment, to the periods that benefit from their use. Recording depreciation has no effect on the liquidity or cash flow of the Garden. It reflects an estimate of the using up of the economic value of tangible assets. In the financial statements it reduces the Change in Net Assets (and, therefore, Total Net Assets) and the carrying basis of Property and Equipment. Unlike for-profit firms, not-for-profit organizations do not provide for the addition or replacement of major long-lived assets out of operations. Historically such entities look to capital contributions for those improvements. Hence, the financial performance for not-for-profits is best evaluated by analyzing operating results excluding the effects of depreciation. Depreciation expense recognized in the Garden’s records for 2018 was $1,585,000.
