Mariposa Monarca celebrates the beauty of the monarch butterfly and its amazing migration. Hundreds of fluttering monarchs surround you as you stroll through the lush, flower-filled pavilion. A tagging demonstration, held each Thursday at 1:30 p.m., is part of the Southwest Monarch Study, a research project that is tracking the migratory patterns of monarchs across Arizona.

Legacy

B o ta n i c a l A r t E x h i b i t i o n October 15, 2009 – January 3, 2010 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily | Ottosen Gallery in Dorrance Hall Twenty-seven paintings and illustrations by artists from the United States, England and Scotland will be showcased at Legacy, an exhibition of works by artists who have received the Diane Bouchier Founder’s Award for Excellence in Botanical Art from the American Society of Botanical Artists. The show will coincide with the American Society of Botanical Artists Conference, hosted by the Garden, and A Natural Perspective, an international juried exhibition of works by the American Society of Botanical Artists held at Phoenix Art Museum.

The Desert Botanical Garden Plant Sale is a one-stop shopping experience featuring one of the largest selections of arid-adapted plants available in one location. Garden volunteers and horticulturists will be on hand to answer questions, assist in plant selections and offer advice. There is also a used book sale offering a wide variety of subjects with all proceeds benefiting the Garden’s library. (Book donations are accepted at Garden Admissions. Please, no magazines.) Purchase pottery and other delightful garden accessories from specialty retailers and the Farmers’ Market.

This fall, visit the Desert Botanical Garden, where children and adults alike can experience a weekend festival that brings the true feel of autumn to the desert.

At the Garden’s Great Pumpkin Festival, fall comes to life with pumpkins, hayrides, country-western entertainment and much more! Your experience begins with activities galore - play carnival games, visit the Arizona Big Train Operators’ interactive exhibit, make a pumpkin seed mosaic, and have a good ole fashioned BBQ lunch with Fabulous Food Fine Catering & Events. Then, take a hayride out to the Garden’s own Pumpkin Patch, where all children, ages 12 & under, receive a free pumpkin... that is, if you can make your way through the Amazing Hay Bale maze! If you would like additional pumpkins and other fall harvest items, they will be available for purchase in the Garden’s Fall Harvest Market.

Ofrenda October 27 – November 5 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. daily | Webster Auditorium Included with Garden admission Expand your knowledge of DÍa de los Muertos through the beauty and creativity of ofrenda installations by local artists. “Ofrenda” means “offering” in Spanish and is an essential part of the celebration. All installations will have a direct relation to the history and contemporary meaning of DÍa de los Muertos. *Ofrenda exhibition schedule may be subject to change, based upon artist availability.

Enjoy entertainment that will bring the history of this holiday to life with song, dance and storytelling. Experience the Desert Botanical Garden’s interactive altar honoring Día de los Muertos, the Garden’s past and present, and the act of gardening itself. Delicious Mexican food, pastries and beautiful Mexican art will be available for purchase in the Garden’s Mercado. Not all vendors are equipped for credit card transactions.

La Calaca Cabaret is a celebration of music, dance, poetry, storytelling and theater, featuring the Valley’s premier DÍa de los Muertos artists Zarco Guerrero, Stella Pope Duarte, Michelle Ceballos and other guests. The Calaca is the smiling skull image of Mexican art, and since ancient times, has symbolized rebirth, regeneration and the acceptance of death as an integral part of life. It is used extensively during the Mexican holiday of DÍa de los Muertos and has become a vital symbol in contemporary Chicano culture. This performance demonstrates the pageantry in Mexican/Chicano tradition, especially as it pertains to DÍa de los Muertos, and combines folk arts, music, dance, performance and masks to entertain and educate audiences about this ancient celebration and its meaning in a contemporary urban setting.

La Calaca Cabaret is a family-friendly event presented in a bilingual and concert-style format. Despite its theme of death, La Calaca Cabaret is full of life, sarcasm, social commentary, lively performances and humor.

Afternoon Procession – La ProcesiÓn Sunday, November 1 | 4:30 p.m.

Included with Garden admission The celebration will culminate in a large garden-wide procession featuring the Valley’s premier DÍa de los Muertos artists, who will lead with colorful song and dance. Moving from Boppart Courtyard, the procession will work its way through the Garden to the exit.

Join us and be among the first to stroll through the Berlin Agave Yucca Forest and view Allan Houser: Tradition to Abstraction, an exhibition of bronze sculptures by a renowned Native American artist. You will be welcomed into the Garden by live Native American music, and then travel to the Stardust Foundation Plaza to hear an Apache storyteller spin illustrative tales of Coyote, Night Sky, Mother Earth and other vivid expressions of mythology.

Berlin Agave Yucca Forest November 21 Opening at noon to the general public Descend into the Desert Botanical Garden’s newest exhibit, the Berlin Agave Yucca Forest, and explore the great variety of agave, yucca and nolina on display.

More than 1,000 plants are part of this exhibit, with over half coming from the Garden’s greenhouses and some never before displayed, such as the Hesperaloe tenuifolia. Others, like the Yucca endlichiana, have not been on display for more than 10 years.

Renovation of this permanent exhibit was made possible by a generous gift from Howard and Joy Berlin to the Tending the Garden Campaign.

Tradition to Abstraction The Desert Botanical Garden and the Heard Museum present a major exhibition of the works of Apache master sculptor Allan Houser November 21, 2009 – May 30, 2010 Considered one of the best-known and celebrated American Indian artists of the 20th century, Allan Houser’s work has been widely recognized throughout the world. The exhibit will be presented at the Garden and the Heard Museum.

The Desert Botanical Garden exhibition will feature 18 sculptures in bronze that reflect the modernist influences from which Houser drew inspiration for his work. The Heard Museum exhibition will feature paintings, sketches and small-scale sculptures from their collection.

AT THE HEARD Heard Museum Hosts Desert Botanical Garden Members Sunday, November 22 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Desert Botanical Garden members have the opportunity to see the Heard Museum’s display of Houser paintings, drawings and smaller-scale sculpture for free. Show your card at the Heard’s member check-in and receive two free adult admissions as well as free admission for children 18 and under in your household. Take Metro Light Rail for easy access! Stop #9 at Encanto/ Central is located right at the Heard’s entrance. It is important to note that parking is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
