When my husband died and I began dating again, I never even thought about becoming infected with HIV. Older women are often overlooked in HIV prevention education and testing because it’s assumed they no longer engage in sexual relations.

My very first visit to D.A.P. saved my life because my case manager realized I needed immediate emergency care. Following my progress and making sure I was fine has never stopped. I went from feeling alone in the world to finding a brand new family.

In this fourth decade, we are beginning to

win the battle

against HIV and AIDS.

That’s my hopeful answer to the question I asked in the 2011 annual report: “What have we learned after 30 years of AIDS?” But after attending the International AIDS Conference just after the close of the fiscal year this annual report covers, it became clear from the nearly 24,000 attendees representing the global HIV/AIDS community that even if a vaccine for HIV is developed, much work remains until AIDS is totally eradicated.

No doubt … we all became more energized when the journal Science reported its “2011 Breakthrough of the Year” – that people who begin taking the correct medications soon after being infected with HIV may become 96% less likely to spread the virus to others. But it’s estimated there are up to 2,000 people living with HIV – who don’t know it – right here in the Coachella Valley.

In fact, it was recently reported that the Palm Springs area has the fourth-highest prevalence of HIV in all of California.

Almost 40% of people who are diagnosed with HIV develop full-blown AIDS within one year, often leading to a significant decline in health and quality-of-life.

Fortunately, Desert AIDS Project … along with a committed group of community partners … is positioned to play a role in what we hope will be the final chapter of this devastating epidemic.

Getting everyone tested for HIV on an initial and ongoing basis is the key to making that happen. Quite simply, if we can link everyone locally who has the virus to proper medication and medical care, we can stop the spread of HIV in our community. With your continued help, we have a chance at stopping the spread of new infections of HIV and playing our part in creating an “AIDS-free generation.”

Until there’s a cure,

Every month for 15 years, a group of 15-30 volunteers known as the “Condom Club” gathers at D.A.P. to assemble thousands of safersex kits. The kits are distributed to 32 different venues across the Coachella Valley, including local bars, hotels, and other social “hotspots” in an effort to promote condom use.

Last February, the Condom Club made 4,300 kits! Even though funding for HIV education and prevention from the State of California halted in 2009, with the help of our donors and our determined volunteers, Desert AIDS Project will continue to make a real difference in the fight against HIV in our community.

Besides that 42% increase in the number of tests conducted in the previous year, we marked National HIV Testing Day 2012 in a big way. We partnered with Riverside County’s Public Health Department and other local healthcare providers, to bring the Pathways to Health and WellBeing HIV Conference to the Palm Springs Convention Center.

Meanwhile, D.A.P.’s testing staff offered $10 gift cards to anyone being tested at our Indio satellite office on this national day of HIV awareness. Desert AIDS Project marks other HIV Awareness Days, targeting specific at-risk population segments – like women and girls, Native Americans, African-Americans, seniors, gay men, and others – throughout the year. Partners like the First Baptist Church’s free health clinic in Desert Hot Springs help make this possible – in June, they helped us test 45 people in a single day!

Grants and contracts awarded by public and private funders provide support for free and confidential HIV testing, food, mental health, and more. This includes funds awarded from the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program.

Private insurance, Medicare, MediCal, and MISP (Medically Indigent Support Services) help defray medical care costs.

Individual contributions, bequests through estate plans and other noncash contributions.

Fundraising events provided more than $1.7 million gross.

New merchandise, in addition to gentlyused donated and consigned items, are sold through our chain of four Revivals stores, almost completely staffed by volunteers.

Investment income and rental income helps D.A.P. to fund the desired “nest egg� of several months of operating expenses for especially difficult financial times.

We provide HIV-specialty primary care onsite in our Well Fargo HIV Health Center.

Includes psychosocial support and other support services like food, housing, and transportation. Case managers link clients to these additional services, remove barriers to care, & help clients be their own advocates.

Management & GENERAL We strive to manage overhead expenses while paying sufficiently competitive salaries to attract the best staff.

DENTAL SERVICES Oral health is critical for a healthy immune staff. Our staff provides compassionate dental care to our patients.

Enlisting public awareness through our award-winning “Make a difference - save a life� public service campaign and online activity through Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, helps make this possible.
