Otago fought hard on Taranaki’s day. With Thompson inspiring they bring plenty to the breakdown and the lineout. Down south they’ll make it tough for Waikato who are now 5 from 6. They’re looking more stable with Leonard, Donald and De Malmanche back. Sweeney is in everything and if they can lower the error rate and close some holes they could make the semis.

W by 2

Expect a gut buster. Both desperately need this for the semis and play similar no nonsense rugby. Southland were flat, even Robinson’s kicking was off, v Auckland. Back home they’ll show, driven by the work rates of Rutledge and McIntosh. Tasman again adapted best to ugly conditions in Whangarei. MacDonald, Goodman, Petenise and Cook are firing but mainly they bring team and can win this too.

W by 8

BOP are another who remain in the semi race. They battled tough v the ‘Bay’, but defensive lapses eventually cost them. NH were also downed in a close one v Waikato. They pounce on errors, can find wide and will have targeted this. Still, you’d think the ability of Bourke and Delaney to control options will give them territory and they’ll look to expose Harbour’s often sleepy defence.

W by 13

The stiff 1st half wind didn’t faze Northland who put in again v Canterbury. The reality is they lack the class to break good line defences. They haven’t beaten Wellington since 2000 and its difficult to see that changing here. The latter are finding some shape despite missing ABs and injury forced re-shuffles. Schwalger, Vito, Ramasy, Leuia, and Mathewson are all standing up and Jane is exceptional.

Despite an 11th table position and early positives, the ‘ASAP Ratings’ have Manawatu second last. They’ve fought hard and got a few individuals but they couldn’t compete up front or out back with Wellington. Canterbury were patchy away v Counties but will plan their run at the title now. With plenty of ABs back and at home with a shield to protect you’d expect a comfortable win.

W by 1

Round 11 - 2:35pm Saturday October 10, Dunedin - Sky Sport 1 WLLLWL Otago

The ‘Bay’ took advantage of BOP’s erratic defence to just get up. They could possibly drop one and still make the semis but it wouldn’t want to be this. With Waldrom, Guilford and Dagg excelling and Berquist’s accuracy that’s unlikely, albeit the careless handling and option issues. Counties again showed their talent for turning scraps into points out wide v Canterbury, but lack 80 minute grunt.

This should end the slim semi chances of one. Taranaki brought cohesion, defence and some width v Otago led by Tony Penn and Jason Eaton. Ripia’s territorial grasp continues to grow and that game would really trouble Auckland. The latter brought some urgency for a change and found enough running chances to get over a flat Southland. Kaino. Afoa, and Moeke looked good but the team will face real unity here.

This looks a possible final again. Wanganui found the full team effort they’d threatened v S Canty. They broke the latter with Middleton, Tikorituma, and Tyrell scoring at will. Mid Canty’s committed and abrasive pack held the territory their pivots gained v H-Kapiti. In Ashburton this could be close, but you get the feeling MC will be better still in a few weeks.

Poverty Bay are hard to measure. They struggled v W Bush but turned on a traditional late running attack and got up on the whistle. You’d think in Gisborne they could get H-Kapiti as well but it wont be easy. The latter were to loose against a tremendously determined Mid Canty team. If they can better respect possession their own pack can match P Bay.

W-Bush went down on the gong to P Bay. With the points carry through this is a must win. They’ve got will and team ethic and Karaitiana is finding good position. They’ll need to tighten the defence and close S Canty’s excellent half back Sekope Maea. S Canty were exposed by Wanganui but they were served a ‘day of’ trip to Wanganui. They should compete better here.

This decade its 4-3 E Coast. Both have lost all 6 this season and in the Heartland Cship TV are on 11 straight losses having not won since this meeting last season. EC’s streak is 14. TV contested up front in the rain, but failed at the loose ball v W Coast. They’re favoured to get this. EC were flattened by a resurgent N Otago but that fate waits others as well.

North Otago got going to late. That’s why they’re in the Lochore Cup. According to the ‘ASAP Ratings’ the division is a no contest. They opened up E Coast, winning by over 50 with ten players scoring. Buller have been close often this season. They finally got there second, tipping up K Country. Higginson and Tafua deliver decent work rates but its hard to see them turning NO who are peaking.

The merit of K Country’s win over S Canty the previous week was exposed when Wanganui beat the latter by over 40 points. As it proved KC couldn’t repeat v Buller in Te Kuiti, done by greater desire. W Coast’s pack stood up in tough conditions v TV and they found some space later. Hughes and Merritt offer plenty of skills and even up north WC should have too much.

RANKINGS – RATINGS – ODDS Ratings Last Rank Week 1 1

Match Day Form

5-10-09 Victory top the ‘ASAP Ratings’ for the 3rd week. They’re now 3 straight after showing too much voltage up front for Roar. Muscat brings not only infinite class but stability and Fabiano, Hernandez, Thompson, Leijer, and Moss are all lifting. They’ll draw another 20,000 plus here v Sydney who came with a season best v CCM. They passed sharp and dominated possession, but will need it all here. Following their great away trot Glory failed to get the win over Fury at home. Against 10 men for 55 mins, they couldn’t finish hit by another albeit disputed blunder by GK Velaphi. The ‘Reds’ have the defence for Glory as they showed mostly keeping out a 1st half onslaught from the Jets in a 1-1 draw. Dodd failed, but if they bring their finish opposed to their slow starts this could go either way. Fury again showed above their table position drawing in Perth. Down to 10 for 55 mins, spirit and fortune got them a share of the points. They’ve a committed defence and will compete even at Blue Tongue. CCM haven’t had the luck since the big win over GC. They struck Sydney at their best last week and are missing Simon. Still, McGlinchy is commanding the middle and Fury will find them tough to break. Although done in Melbourne, Roar played well across the park against the top ‘rater’. They lost Henrique in the process but if they can finish better this is a chance. Bleiberg and GC are yet to match the hype reflected by a crowd of 4000 last week. Admittedly short staffed v Phoenix they rarely looked likely and were lucky to get a draw. They have plenty to prove.
