The catalogue presents snapshots of the culminating projects produced by our final year undergraduate and postgraduate students. Huge congratulations to them - and all our students - for overcoming the considerable challenges posed by socially distanced, home and online working under Covid. Feedback from the profession suggests that online working has become the new normal, so our graduates should be wellprepared for practice.

Heartfelt thanks to our friends in the profession, who support us and our students in many ways, including through the generous

sponsorship of prizes at this difficult time.

Thanks also to our dedicated academic and professional staff, who transitioned to online teaching delivery over Easter, and who have continued to support our students ever since.

Landscape Architecture - integrating understandings of people, planet and places - continues to be the most effective way of visioning a better way of living. The pandemic has exposed our need for a healthy environment to ensure our continued survival.

PROJECT EVERYWHERE

The Special Project requires the students to complete an independent project from start to finish, to a professional standard. Students develop their own brief for a project that can be anywhere on this planet. The brief describes and defines the site and proposed interventions, its context and issues and establishes a design, planning or management brief, rationale and approach to guide the project.

The aim is to demonstrate an integration of the knowledge and skills gained through the degree and apply them, to solve the problems posed by the chosen project. Working on their own initiative - with tutors acting as advisers and consultants - students collect and evaluate background information, carry out surveys, develop plans, strategies and designs and communicate the findings and proposals.

The student page headers note the student’s course, their ‘strand’ (either a focus on planning, design and management, or a combination of these) and their studio tutors.

Leeds is the largest city in West Yorkshire. The Aire River is a main river which flows through the city, and once supplied the convenience of transportation for industrial development. However, it also brought the problem of flooding.

Nowadays, due to the extreme weather events caused by climate change and the impact of urbanisation, the problems of flooding have become more serious.

This project aims to alleviate the risk of flooding with blue and green infrastructure. The blue and green infrastructure will increase rainwater infiltration into the land and thereby reduce the pressure on the Aire River on a day of heavy rain. The blue and green infrastructure method will also support more open green space for the city on sunny days and provide flooding retention areas to hold the extra flood water in extreme events.

In this way, Leeds could become resilient to urban flooding and achieve sustainable development.

Portsmouth, characterised as a flat island city, is at risk from changes in the climate increasing future surface water and coastal flooding. As a result of urban expansion, a considerable amount of green space that protected the city from flooding has been lost.

Through the use of natural elements, I aim to protect people and nature whilst bringing back our past landscape and connecting Portsmouth to its environment; to prepare for climate change by working with water and creating a connected

growing green island that thrives in nature and fundamentally helps to improve people’s livelihood.

On a design scale, the area of Southsea will be transformed into a connecting blue/green network that links to the sea via a wetland nature reserve.

With new topography representing barrier island coastal features and a rewilding ecological habitat, people will be protected from future flooding whilst also being connected to nature.

This project will focus on the whole of Portsmouth’s coastal flood defence system, up to 35 years into the future (2055). Not only are people at risk, but habitats will also suffer from sea levels rising. Therefore, the overall vision is to use a diversity of ecological engineering methods, along with some conventional approaches, to mitigate against tidal flooding. It will also provide opportunities to extend green spaces along the coastline, protect heritage sites, and provide more settings for human activity.

In order to tackle this trending issue on a challenging scale, I developed a methodology for identifying new locations for sea defences, and determining how tall they need to be. Images 3 and 4 reveal part of this methodology, which is to assess ‘which area, in which tidal situation will it be flooded, and who will be affected’. I then demonstrate visualisations of the new defence strategy.

This is the last old town in the centre of Shanghai which still has rich cultural heritage, including old urban fabrics and lifestyles. Streets here are somewhere between shantytowns and lanes. Low level old housing has led to high building density but low population density. The site lacks vegetation and space for activity.

Waterlogging is the main form of disaster here, and the heat island effect is obvious.

The design issues of the project include cultural protection, ecological environment protection, disaster resistance

and social equality.

It has been really challenging to balance the industrial area and residential area, traditional lifestyle and modern lifestyle, to retain the old fabric of the city whilst making the order of the space more clear, and to keep old housing whilst making more space for activities, greening and water.

Nature and time are not holding back in this post-industrial site, derelict for 20 years. Woodlands are getting wilder; succession is taking hold of every hard surface and buildings are falling into disrepair. The site is rich in assets: a river corridor, woodlands, a millpond, historical water and mining infrastructure. It is also riven with challenges: asbestos, near constant surface water, river flooding.

The site will become a post-industrial river park, integral to one of the several green fingers linking the Peak District to Sheffield. Sitting in the Don Catchment, the park will contribute to efforts to reduce flooding downstream. Selected buildings will be retained and used as attenuation tanks for surface water and the river will be reprofiled to hold water upstream during storm events. A management programme will ameliorate habitats for key species connected to the Loxley Valley.

The project is located in an area near to the city centre in Hull and aims to transform the River Hull into a major corridor that links up the city whilst also providing a new urban quarter for recreation and living through the revitalisation of the river. At present, Hull city centre is facing challenges of disconnection between the community, the bridges, and the river.

There is a lack of quality public open space for both the local community and visitors to enjoy.

The major focuses of the project

aim to: • Respond to the current challenges and take the opportunity to reconnect the River Hull, Humber Estuary, and the city with one another; • Promote areas of active recreation and invite users to engage with the River Hull; • Build upon Hull’s wellbeing, sense of place and cultural identity as a port city; • Recognise the importance of adapting green infrastructure and sustainable drainage methods to prevent flooding.

Kidderminster was a deindustrialised town that had lost its identity. Cars dominated causing fragmentation, and green infrastructure was minimal.

Now it has been brought back to life, the once neglected River Stour has become a focal point, drawing both visitors and ecology into the town centre. The beach, lowered walkway and amphitheatre not only allow visitors access to the water’s edge but also provide space for the river to naturally inundate. Woodland has been designed to flood, with wetter species topographically

lower than drier ones. The once fragmented town has been bound together with the central area, allowing visitors to orientate themselves with signage and well-defined paths. Pedestrianisation dominates, with both formal and informal paths offering the option for direct or indirect routes, and formal paths remain accessible during periods of flooding. Redundant spaces have been transformed into living places, bringing life back to Kidderminster!

This project aims to create a public space for citizens to make full use of the different seasons. Ice and snow will no longer be seen as obstacles that prevent people from enjoying outdoor life, but instead as natural decoration, key to creating a dream environment and a romantic, dramatic public space.

At the same time, a rich array of functions and human activities will inject vitality into a beautiful environment. Here, people can enjoy the opportunities for fun brought by winter and the snow, and

experience the dynamic beauty brought by each of the four seasons.

As landscape architects we understand the severity of climate change, but for many people, it has become a confusing and unrelatable scientific topic.

This project aims to explore the social dimension of climate change, and looks at how landscape architecture can contribute to achieving multidimensional sustainability, combining adaptable infrastructure with positive social engagement and the promotion of a climate culture shift.

The focus is on a 155ha site north of Manchester City Centre, where 15,000

homes are expected to be delivered by the council over the next 15-20 years.

The design approach recognises the huge opportunity this development site provides as we move into an uncertain future and the project aims to explore the tools we need for a re-evaluation of urban living.

Winner of THE URBAN WILDERNESS INSPIRATIONAL PLANTING PRIZE

This project demonstrates how a more strategic and adaptable approach to inner-city development can prepare the city of Birmingham for future climate uncertainty. The development site, Birmingham Eastside Locks, is a postindustrial canalside landscape located within Birmingham’s central Eastside district. The landscape vision is to deliver a resilient ‘Urban Naturehood’, promoting the creative integration of vegetation within a high-density urban neighbourhood.

A core element of the project is the

use of resilient urban tree communities with capabilities to withstand both the environmental stresses associated with the urban environment, and the uncertain climatic scenarios that Birmingham faces.

Responsive site management was another key theme explored throughout the project.

The management approach advocates the importance of collaborative working, strategic thinking and adaptability to respond to changing local conditions and help secure long-term viability.

This design is committed to the development of Smithfield Market and Smithfield Rotunda Garden as the centre of expansion for the entire area, with a clear goal for developing both architecture and public space and making the two complement each other in order to create a strong sense of place and a world-class cultural, creative and artistic destination.

The aim is to make the venue the most active public space in the ‘Cultural Mile’, offering impeccable service facilities for cultural events, and making the historical

buildings in the venue more prominent.

The site will be completely renovated and transformed to become an active, energysaving and sustainable new public space.

At the management phase, the various event spaces will be divided, the drainage system of the site improved, and the green infrastructure of the site optimized. The site environment will be improved, and the microclimate will be changed.

In China, there is less and less organic food due to the use of harmful chemicals in intensive agriculture and long-distance transportation.

The railway community in Chengdu city, which is home to numerous old people and migrant workers but has no farmland, was very prosperous in the 1950s and 1960s but is now a city village.

This project aims to preserve the characteristics of the site, to integrate and make use of scattered land and the existing labour force to grow food more locally, and

to reduce the use of chemicals and food transportation in order to create an active, healthy and incredible space for growing.

It aims to make food growing part of the sustainable lifestyle and culture of this area.

Milburngate Gateway Gardens provides a much-needed civic open green space for Durham City, enhancing the dramatic setting of the UNESCO World Heritage site. The future-proof gardens, home to the new County Council Headquarters, bridge the gap in the city’s provisions for its community, providing a local resource through employment and leisure.

The site is at the heart of the city, currently a vast characterless pit following the demolition of government buildings.

There is a huge opportunity to form a new identity and a flourishing civic green space. Careful integration of contemporary architecture, nature and river experience will create a vibrant living landscape - a place to work, play, learn and thrive.

The nature-sensitive philosophies of designing with the river and nature mark the change in Durham’s attitude to flooding, creating a synergy between water and the urban environment.

The site is located on the Tees estuary near Redcar. It used to be a steelmaking factory but this closed in 2015 due to financial difficulties. The site has some environmentally degraded areas and a unique steelmaking plant infrastructure which reveals a hundred years of steelmaking history. The local plan focuses on economic growth and proposes to clear the site, demolish all the industrial infrastructure and build a mass of manufacturing buildings.

However, I see the special value of the site for development into an area for nature, wildlife and human recreation whilst also memorialising the history of steelmaking in the region. It will gradually support hundreds of species, host thousands of visitors into the future, and become seen as more valuable as time goes by. The whole process is like the phoenix; a landscape reborn from a polluted wasteland to create a nature reserve with a stronger and wiser future.

An exploration in socio-spatial, ecological dynamics, this project is based upon the identification of disused interstices and cyclical processes of community-led design in Barkerend, Bradford. Inspired by opportunistic approaches to postindustrial, urban landscape design and the manipulation of ecological succession, a tactical urbanist approach was advocated as the basis for resident interaction. A community engagement toolbox, including methods for identifying interstices, creating typologies, and manipulating woodland

succession, form the basis of an iterative strategy to facilitate cycles of dialogue and action with local people.

The design phase of the project focuses on the development of a derelict textile mill site at the heart of the neighbourhood. A projected vision of the future, based on three principle actions of Patch, Stitch and Cut, reimagines the mill site as resilient, urban woodland, functioning as ecological refuge and social space.

This project site is an area of newly reclaimed land at the seafront in Hiroshima, Japan. The city has kept on expanding towards the sea. People in Hiroshima used to live very close to the sea, but now the seafront has mostly become an industrial area; this causes disconnection between the sea and people’s daily lives, both physically and also spiritually.

I found that the spiritual disconnection with the sea has also been caused by the change to the calendar system. The old calendar system relied

on the phases of the moon, and also tidal changes caused by the gravity of the moon.

In order to reveal the dynamic seascapes in relation to tidal changes and the moon, I have designed the site using the traditional indigo dye method, the concept of which reflects the cultural sense of time in Japan.

The study area is located in Manchester, UK, at the junction of Salford, Trafford, and Manchester. Because of its position, it plays an extremely important gateway role. Meanwhile, the Manchester Ship Canal and Bridgewater Canal at the centre of the study area provide good water and ecological resources for this area.

Although the study area has great geographical advantages and natural landscape resources, it still has serious problems. Due to historical development and existing infrastructure, the urban form of the area lacks connectivity, permeability, and diversity of experience. It has a bad water environment and a lack of green space. It is hoped that through this project, this area can have an improved water environment, continuous and high-quality green space, a liveable and beautiful community neighbourhood, and a strengthening of the local characteristics, thereby becoming a green city with urban vitality and resilience.

The main proposition for this project is to integrate natural woodland within an urban cultural woodland framework in dense urban residential areas, in order to explore the prospects for urban forest development in 2050.

In the first ten years, the main strategy will be to establish a water management system within the existing brownfield land and the space around buildings, so as to initially expand existing levels of woodland vegetation and ground weeds and build a connection between this

area and target species. In the next ten years, we can expect to see a woodland created through natural succession and appropriate artificial management, enhancing the ecological value of the area, creating biodiversity hotspots and providing a rich landscape experience. Finally, the strategy is to develop space for urban activity and implant certain cultural and educational connotations within the woodland, through the management and structure of the area and woodland activities.

This project focuses on the nonhuman animals who dwell alongside us in the urban environment. The current rhetoric around biodiversity in cities often assigns value based on human health, aesthetics and economic benefits but does not always prioritise or acknowledge that animals have their own reasons to live amongst us and continue to adapt human built form to their own uses.

Taking St James’ Gardens and its relationship to Liverpool Anglican Cathedral, the project proposes a series

of interventions at different scales that suggest a de-centring of the human and a shift in favour of co-existence with birds.

Utilising the existing site ecology and monuments, the design is informed by direct observation of bird use and their annual and life cycles, creating a woodland habitat and designs at the detail scale that reinforce their rights within the city.

3.8 million elderly people currently live alone. Our cities are well connected, accessible and have an abundance of cultural and social opportunities all within walking distance. Surely, they are the perfect places to grow old?

Meadow Lane is a landscape-led co-housing project designed to promote health through an environment that entices residents to consciously and subconsciously exercise whilst empowering people to cultivate a culture of health, productivity and wellbeing in their lives. Tree selection

and planting frames spaces and views while topographical changes allow for the landscape to become a series of interlinked challenges and opportunities that anyone aged 3 to 103 can find intellectual and physical stimulation with. The Residents’ Garden, The River Walk and Bridge Street Plaza are key areas of character. Each space plays a unique role in the user experience of the scheme, delivering unique changes in material, ecological and experiential characteristics.

Iceland is suffering from a mental health crisis. The country consumes more anti-depressants than any other in the world and whilst rates of prescriptive treatment have steadily increased, so have the number of depressive disorders. Clearly the drugs aren’t working.

Research has shown people’s happiness fundamentally depends upon the strength of their social connections.

Icelanders have been robbed of a social life between buildings by sprawl, cars and climate. The core aim of the Living Hygge project is to remedy this injustice.

A Pattern Language for the harbour has been designed and tested to guide the planning/design process. The Pattern Language is essentially a set of rules which steer the ‘designer’ towards a socially restorative ‘hygge’ outcome; it was formulated for the benefit of non-design professionals, such as local residents, to let them shape their own living environment.

“There’s a famous seaside place called Blackpool, that’s noted for fresh air and fun…” So began the famous poem made popular through the 1930s, when Blackpool was Britain’s most popular seaside resort, with a thriving economy and a huge cultural identity. Sadly, the town has since declined and now holds the unenviable title of the most deprived local authority area in England.

The vision is to transform Blackpool into a diverse and inclusive arts and culture leisure destination and to improve the

quality of life for its residents. The three main strategies are: promote cohesion and connection between cultural sites; provide access to good quality greenspace and provide space and facilities for community, culture and leisure activities. Blackpool cannot recreate its past, but it can celebrate its culture whilst providing for its residents and a new generation of visitors.

Central, Hong Kong, is a Central Business District with lots of high-rise buildings due to limited developable land. Through the observation of the disadvantaged population of Filipino Domestic Workers (FDWs), who sit on stairs and floors during their day off on Sundays, they have provided a lens into a bigger problem: the case of fragmented public spaces as a result of the density of the city.

FDWs act as a catalyst to improve the quality of life of other citizens in Hong

Kong and the vision is to create a network of small open spaces, each with a different identity. The underlying concept is guided

by Richard Forman’s theory of patch, corridor and matrix to connect existing fragmented public spaces with other potential open spaces, e.g. street corners, to form a hierarchy of public spaces along the corridor of Chater Road.

Woolwich Common in Greenwich is adjacent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

A large number of patients and medical staff are special groups who use this space and are often in a poor state of mental or physical health. However, the green space does not provide an elegant place for outdoor leisure, and this is what I hope to improve. In order to solve these issues, I need to: • Provide support for people in need of rehabilitation • Activate the spatial function • Improve ecological sustainability

The purpose of my design is to transform Woolwich Common into a healing park with the rehabilitation functions of improving people’s physical and mental health. In order to do this, I have applied the concept of the therapeutic landscape with several stages of treatment.

The specific methods I will use are as follows: • Enhance people’s sensory experience in the natural environment • Create spaces with different forms • Establish rich pedestrian flows in the park.

The vision for the city of Sandnes is to bring back the beating heart of the fjord city and to celebrate its culture, identity, natural environment and people.

Historical remnants are evident but are overshadowed by the newer gigantic malls and structures. This fragmentation and lack of attractiveness contributes to the stagnation of the city.

The strategy is to make the city compact, rhythmic and prosperous. A gradient of urban to naturalistic places will be created. The Community Heart is

a public square and platform for events and socialisation. The Riverpark is inspired by the natural history and the fjord habitats. Nature and play opportunities are especially important for the new demographics of immigrants who cannot afford to drive to mountains or cabins like those from traditional Norwegian culture.

To activate the new places, transformations of connections are also essential.

My project begins with the term “nature-deficit disorder”, which refers to a child’s mental and physical problems due to lack of contact with nature. The site focuses on communities in East Manchester, where children have a much higher rate of health problems than the UK average. After some research, the most direct way to solve these health problems in children appears to be through contact with nature.

In my project, more public green space will be provided for East Manchester communities. More space for outdoor

games will be created to allow children of different ages to play, and children will actively engage in outdoor activities to improve their health. In Stage1, I will increase the accessibility of public green spaces, develop noise reduction strategies and water strategies. In Stage 2, I will design various types of natural play spaces, come up with canal strategies, and explore types of plants that have a positive impact on children.

The site is located on the border of the remote East London area, enclosed by traffic and situated alongside Rainham Marshland and the Thames. The surrounding scenery is beautiful, but the landfill in the site has not been completely capped. If it can be developed for ecological restoration, design management, and connected to Rainham Marshland which already attracts tourists - it will be an excellent ecological habitat. A large number of bird lovers, cyclists, families and students will be attracted to visit, thereby bringing about the development of ecotourism in the surrounding area.

To differentiate from SSSI wetland marshes (Rainham Marshland), the topography and vegetation here will be used to design a forest-based area which combines multiple forms of habitat including grasslands, wetlands, mudflats, and potential wet grassland - to create a diverse ecological protection area. It will simultaneously provide a rich ecological experience whilst embracing education, mountain biking and the landfill elements of the landscape.

Evolution has been an integral part of Grosvenor Square’s character. It is 300 years since it was first designed.

The primary purpose of this redesign is to redefine Grosvenor Square as a top visitor destination for London - a new 21st century garden with pavilion, cafe and events spaces - and to respect the spirit of the past. The vision for Grosvenor Square is for it to be a beautiful garden, a natural haven within the city, engaging all the senses and evolving with the seasons. A longer-term strategy will link in

Marchwood North is located alongside Marchwood’s existing settlement and the New Forest in Hampshire, UK. This site has remained undeveloped.

Consequently, the landscape has undergone succession and, without intervention, will naturally transform into secondary woodland. This habitat is usually species poor and cannot reflect the New Forest’s qualities and character.

Integration of nature and culture is the vision for Marchwood North, where it isn’t just any standard housing development. Utilising the landscape’s assets, Marchwood North can be both a nature park and a settlement with nature flowing through it. The issues addressed include habitat homogeneity, local housing needs, and access to varied habitats for people and wildlife. Rewilding and its benefits inform the theoretical design.

Landscape restoration is shaped by natural processes, influenced by returning grazing species. Place-keeping within communities will maintain newly created habitats surrounding residential areas and allow them to be resilient in the long-term.

The Pomegranate Quarter was an area of Chesterfield that had been cut off from the rest of the town centre due to busy roads and left inactive as a result of only having nightlife business in the area. With great local and countrywide transport links, and key buildings of heritage, there was much potential.

The Quarter has been designed, and management plans created, to make this an area of Chesterfield that celebrates culture, builds community and focuses on healthy urban living. Areas of the

site will be transformed from roads to pedestrianised areas where events take place, and vegetation will create yearround characterful spaces. Car parks will turn into apartment blocks and retail premises with private pocket courtyards for residents that provide space for relaxation and socialising. Abandoned roadside space will become biodiverse linear woodland, creating an active transport route around the whole town centre.

This project aims to change the narrative of a long neglected post-industrial site, using its unique and challenging qualities to create a new green resource which will address local issues of flooding and of poor health. I propose to reach this aim by highlighting and building on the site’s industrial and ecological traces, reflecting on the site’s history but also looking forward to new possibilities.

I first built on existing substantial ecological succession using woodland to create a mosaic of different spaces and diverse habitat opportunities. Secondly, I used the site’s industrial remains to direct my design language and create a formal centre which graduates out to more naturalistic on the edges.

As such, the proposed design aims to create a resilient community space which embraces its ‘wildscape’ qualities to act as a space for play, wildlife and climate mitigation.

Earswick lies between Huntington and Strensall about 6.4km north of York, adjacent to the River Foss. This project is an extension of York’s urbanisation, providing around 1,500 homes in the initial phase.

As the city extends to the countryside, the character of the local landscape will be drowned in urbanisation and may lose its identity of farming and countryside scenes.

This project will rethink the nature-culture relationship through agrarian activity, establish a new sustainable neighbourhood within the Green Belt, and create food growing communities to link people together whilst benefitting wildlife. It will act as a natural buffer between ‘urban’ and ‘countryside’ in order to enhance people’s quality of living and reduce harm to the local landscape’s character.

An opportunity arose in Alperton when Brent won the bid for the London Borough of Culture programme. This became the catalyst for beginning the transformation of the area surrounding One Tree Hill Park, whilst making sure its impact created a lasting legacy within the community.

The project programme will be guided by the creation of a community campus, through collaborative park design, that creates an educational landscape in partnership with Alperton Community School. The programme aims to form a network of learning through small community projects that create interrelationships between students and the community, supporting the enhanced school curriculum as well as development of the park. Because Alperton is in a state of transition, the project looked for design solutions that engage with temporality and flexibility, which can adapt and evolve over time.

Air pollution is regularly reaching and exceeding legal limits in Manchester.

Poor access to greenspace in the city poses a threat to the sustainability of this place while posing serious health concerns for its population and commuters. What I have addressed in this project is not what Manchester simply is, but what it could be by transitioning the city centre of Manchester to a car-free zone.

My aims and objectives for this project are to reclaim space from cars in the city centre, to create places for people, to

New housing in the UK is generally designed with a lack character and senseof-place. To challenge the domineering trends in development, this project drew inspiration from the site’s environmental and social context to resolve three main issues: lack of character in housing; impact on sensitive landscapes; creating communities.

By restoring historic hedgerows and retaining existing landscape features, such as woodland and disused quarries, a new greenspace network with walking/ cycling trails connect the development with the surrounding countryside and village.

Using the greenspace as a framework, the project explores the potential for largescale community self-build development.

Different self-build options allow people with different design interests, aspirations and financial backgrounds access to housing, creating a diverse community.

A unified scale and materiality allow for creative design freedom but serves to reinforce the local historic identity and sense of place.

With increased pressure on the NHS and increasing volumes of prescriptions written yearly to treat anxiety and depression, “Mind over Matter” explores a new social model for short-term supported mental health housing. The project site is “Boots Island”, a post-industrial city centre wasteland. The vision is “Island Park & Living”: care and accommodation for mental health sufferers at different stages of recovery within a restorative community and stimulating wider environment emphasising gradual exposure.

The landscape becomes a cultivating health resource, explored through the symbiosis of the landscape and its function: to acknowledge, restore and recover. The journey to recovery from mental health problems is depicted by emphasising three distinct landscape areas: crisis, healing and production - key processes in reviving a post-industrial landscape. Water and vegetation become paramount in expressing this through remediation and a dynamic between containment and chaos.

After the decommissioning of Port Talbot Steelworks, around 4,000 workers will become unemployed, leading to a depression in the surrounding regions.

Residents hope to grow vegetables in their

Kingston-Upon-Hull is particularly vulnerable to sea-level rise caused by climate change, with 90% of the city lying below the highest recorded tides.

The project aims to alleviate and mitigate the effects of climate change by both protecting the Hull region from future flooding and sequestering carbon while restoring habitats. This will be achieved by converting a large area of agriculture, mainly to salt marsh. The strategy of managed realignment and principles of rewilding will be used to create a longterm plan for the area, with transport links, management and building-use all being considered.

Stage 1, at 1:80 000, utilised a suitability analysis on GIS software to create a boundary and separate the site into phases and character areas. Stage 2, at 1:15 000, involved creating a masterplan using elevation and tidal data, to divide the area into salt marsh zones.

Due to the excessively rapid land expansion and capital-first market philosophy, Chinese cities have led to a continuous deterioration of the environment for human settlement.

My site is located in the central part of Shenzhen, southern China, and is a typical area that has been negatively affected by rapid urbanisation.

Industry used to be of central importance to this area. At the core of this site lies a quarry that once functioned as the heart, soul, and economic lifeline

for the area, alongside some scattered factory areas. However, where it was once the pride of the site, the quarry has now become an eyesore to local residents, and can often intensify social conflicts. The good news is that quarrying on the site is nearing completion, which means that the site can be revitalized, presenting a unique opportunity to rejuvenate the local area.

The aim of this project is to help a small town in Poland facing numerous social issues (that is on the verge of depopulation) and at the same time propose a universal strategy that can be applied to other places with similar problems. It is based on a 7-step programme, each step concerning a different scale of intervention from regional to local. Steps 1-3 concentrate on regional planning and 4-7 are all about finding the hidden potential of the place. In this case it is concentrated in the courtyards, which are the carrier of the identity of the medieval

town. This is a story about celebrating the ordinary life of the ordinary people who deserve to have equal opportunities in life despite coming from a poor rural area and a forgotten little town that can be loved again.

The main concept is to break down multiple barriers preventing people from accessing green space and river corridors in London. The site will be redeveloped into a new business and leisure centre, and will provide housing and job opportunities to meet the needs of the increasing population.

The barriers are as follows: a broken Thames walkway, high-up railways around the area, poor green infrastructure, a lack of street trees, narrow paths, an old industrial impression, suburban retail layout, as well as a gap in wealth. In order to break down the

barriers in the design stage, I will create a wide access “highway” which links straight to the Thames. There will be new green spaces along three themes: rain garden, meadow and a big lawn. The whole project will aim to provide greener, healthier and more convenient lives, as well as a better green space waterfront experience for people who come into the site.

A push for ecological urbanism and a return to the River Lagan in Belfast City Centre. Project site covers 35 ha. The land was used in the 18th century for heavy industry, and is now home to brownfield, housing, and some light industry. The main priorities for this planning proposal are:

Beirut’s rhythm is defined by its uncertain future as much as its turbulent past. Both are embodied throughout the landscape, from bullet-holed buildings left vacant to a backdrop of cranes which symbolise the continuous recreation of the city. However, in the everyday, it is citizens’ actions, movements and exchanges which recreate the city.

The design shapes a space for the common good. It aims to ‘return to common use the spaces that power had seized’ (Agamben, 2005). An architecture

This project provides a solution for outdoor space improvement in “urban villages” (informal settlements in urban areas). At the planning stage, the solution includes two strategies: A. Secret Base; B. BOX-up Avenue. One design area is shown for each strategy. To soften the top-down approach in city development and promote the bottom-up actions of the urban village, moveable parts are implemented in both of the strategies. Local people are encouraged to use and change the landscape to suit their needs.

Secret Base aims to create outdoor play space for children living in the urban village, engaging with natural elements and changeable facilities to cultivate children’s cognitive ability and creativity.

BOX-up Avenue is a linear public green space designed for shops and neighbourhoods. The flexibility of moveable furniture (the BOX) and spatial sequence allow both private activities and big events to happen.

Masterplans freeze space in a moment in time, but the city is always changing. Palimpsest Urbanism offers a new methodology by temporal collage; a 5-step framework to anticipate future change without prescribing it. Empson Street Industrial Estate forms the lens through which this is explored.

Ruins move us across time - within them, we contemplate our own futures.

They are prerequisite for redesign – an eventuality to celebrate and embrace within the design process.

There is no final design, for the city has no end point - each time must work hard to be lived in. Urban landscapes must continue to create better experiences for people, and shape the future of the city.

Holbeck is a post-industrial area which conserves many 1850s historic buildings. It is easy to see the patterns from the industrial brick structures. It is a 15-minute walk from Leeds city centre, however there are huge gaps in health, income, employment, and living environment. The core issues are that it is unsafe, isolated, and deprived.

The vision is to make Holbeck a liveable neighbourhood, focusing on identity and connectivity, and to transform the historic viaduct into a lively space for people which

The concept is Embrace x Diversity = Proximity. Embrace the identity of Holbeck and a variety of land uses to create connectivity which will make people’s relationships closer. The focus of the design will be in the seams - in turning the disused viaduct into an opportunity to connect the northern industrial area and the southern residential area.

The Riverside Cultural Ecological Park in the county-level city of Yizheng, administered by Yangzhou City, has a long history of shipbuilding but also faces many problems such as an extremely hard ground, lack of vegetation, poor air quality, and severe water pollution, making this site very unattractive. My design and management plan will focus on solving these problems.

The site has experienced ups and downs, but after more than one hundred years of industrial and cultural changes, it will become the main venue for the south of Yizheng City. I will retain the industrial character of the park in the design, whilst the site is restored and regenerated to meet the needs of citizens and tourists for use in leisure and entertainment, connecting with nature, understanding the history of the city, and acquiring ecological knowledge. In this way, I will create a dynamic riverside space that leads the new life of the city. At the same time, through a staged management plan, the vegetation, wildlife habitat, and space for interaction between people and animals will be effectively managed to ensure the site’s continued growth.

This project aims to plan and design the Dazhou River space in order to create new character and to provide a functional space for local residents, thereby establishing a vibrant social space along the river to encourage people to visit. The

The site of my project is located in the southeast of the Nottingham city centre, next to the sports district. Although its location is unique and excellent, it has the poor transport connection and poor environment. This area is occupied by industry and there is almost no green space.

The aim of the project is to regenerate this area. After planning and design, the new added green space will be like a dose of medicine, it will treat wounds left by industry, develop a systematic green network and promote

a healthier environment. A new tour and fitness route will well connect this area to the city centre and surroundings. In the future, the riverside area will become an environmental-friendly and mixed-use neighbourhood within a sustainable and attractive landscape setting. It will attract more people to visit, work or live.

The site of Jiaoshan Port is located in Songmen, a fishing town on the southeast coast of Zhejiang province. Songmen Town is an ancient town with a history of over 900 years and the residents have made their living from fishing for many years.

The site of Jiaoshan Port occupies most of the coastline of Songmen Town and comprises of a wharf, disused shipyards and an industrial area. In recent years, due to the declining infrastructure and the relocation of a large number of factories, the site is in serious decline and is almost

a ruin. At the same time, coastal tourism has begun to develop rapidly, with more and more tourists coming to visit this previously unknown town.

This project aims to create a new recreational fishing port that can be supported by tourist activity whilst also recognising the legacy of the fishing tradition.

I chose Xianghu Lake for my special project as I am worried about the damage being caused by poor implementation of the government’s Beautiful Village policy there. Xianghu Lake (approximately 424 hectares) is located in Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province. The lake area is currently subject to a restorative project as part of the Beautiful Village policy, which aims to increase revenue for the local government and restore the ecological environment because of the way in which the surrounding brick kiln factories have affected the water quality of Xianghu.

The purpose of the policy is to develop a sustainable environment as proposed by the Chinese central government. However, there are problems with its implementation in Xianghu. For example, people working on the project do not have the necessary skills or training, and the design is inappropriate due to the cloning of generic urban landscapes.

The management plan will put the Beautiful Village policy back on the right track. For example, in phase one, in order to better maintain the trees on the project site, the plan will formulate and introduce different maintenance regimes based on trees with different characteristics. It will also address current water quality concerns by strengthening procedures for inspection and investigation. For the third phase, that has not yet been completed, the destruction of original farmland and old buildings will be halted immediately and they will undergo repair, protection and re-use.

My vision for Xianghu is an ecotourism village that maintains original landscapes and helps local farmers and workers profit. This will be supported by three aims: to promote the sustainable development of the environment (phase 1 and 2); to restore the original natural landscape and mode of farming in the Xianghu Lake area (phase 3); to develop sustainable tourism (phase 3).

For the first and second phases, this will involve establishing an appropriate and professional landscape management plan.

For the third phase, which is still under development, objectives include: retaining the original farmland and historical sites, developing productive and demonstrative landscapes, combining agriculture and tourism, and helping residents to use the restored old houses to develop B&Bs and obtain income.

Porter Brook Pocket Park daylighting project was finished in 2005 and shows how daylighting (de-culverting) helps people to rediscover the benefits of the river through its habitat, biological, and sociological aspects. It is located in the southeast corner of Sheffield City Centre and is surrounded by business, housing, and car parking areas that are undergoing modification. In the Sheffield Council City Centre Plan 2018-28, this new breathing area is in a cultural industries quarter and housing development area. Although the project won a living waterway award, complaints still exist.

In the post-project period, where there is more uncertainty surrounding daylighting, monitoring can be used to help landscape managers adapt management plans to react to new challenges.

Community-based monitoring is a method which can be used to satisfy professional and labour requirements, but this requires the support of policy and public education.

This management plan will focus on how to improve citizen-science to help people understand the vision and objective of the management plan, gain knowledge about the daylighting project, and build a policy and professional support model. For this site - in order to make ‘messy’ acceptable, establish long-term monitoring, make use of historic resources, and improve accessibility to the site - there are three key considerations in the management plan: a model to get stakeholders involved, provide public education about daylighting projects, and help people learn how to understand the vision.

the environment and the public and demonstrate the multiple values of the daylighting project. More local involvement will promote a strong sense of ownership of this high-quality riverside.

• Firstly,the management and monitoring group will establish a transparent structure with professional and policy support to build partnerships between stakeholder groups and help them to join the plan (Table 1).

• Secondly, improvement in the transportation network will provide access to an attractive and safe riverside, ensuring safety and providing support for public engagement activities.

• Thirdly, with the help of the stakeholder group, activities will be held according to the monitoring plan to collect data and provide public education. For example, riverside walks to collect water samples and photography competitions to monitor the wildlife situation. This will help people to understand the daylighting project and its benefits, the vision of the management plan, and how to support monitoring (Table 2).

• Finally, tourism, exhibitions and public talks will help people to rediscover the history of the site.

The Erlongshan Reservoir is located in the central area of China, in Shaanxi Province. It has been an attractive tourist destination since the Tang Dynasty.

I chose this reservoir as my grandfather spent his entire lifetime there; his thoughts and actions have a profound influence on me.

As an essential water source for Shangzhou city and the national South-toNorth Water Transfer Project, Erlongshan Reservoir has been listed as a National Surface Water Protection Area since 2005.

All kinds of farming and tourist activities - including fishing, ferries and farmhouse resorts - were strictly forbidden by the local government in order to protect this water resource and the wetland upstream.

However, these actions were very damaging to the livelihood of the local farming community. My vision is to make the Erlongshan Reservoir area the heart of a wealthy community and one of the most ecologically rich areas in Shaanxi Province.

The aims are set out across four themes: • To become a successful ecotourism destination.

• To improve the income of the local community.

• To maintain the water quality.

• To enhance public awareness of environmental conservation.

To resolve the conflict between the protection of water sources and local economic development, “ecotourism” is an appropriate concept. A successful ecotourism destination needs to satisfy two indicators: one is to protect the local natural environment, and the other is to have a management system with indepth participation from local people.

Environmental conservation not only preserves the natural wetland and wildlife,

but also attracts more tourists from big cities. More tourists mean more profits for economic development and to invest in environmental conservation action and education. This will become a virtuous cycle. Additionally, a management system with in-depth participation from local people could generate more profits for local villagers and limit over-development and commercialism. At the same time, ecotourism could help educate more ordinary tourists into becoming ecotourists.

Based on my case study research, in order to achieve my vision, we need an effective management system to maintain the balance between environmental conservation and improved income.

Erlongshan Ecotourism Management Committee will mainly consist of representatives from the local village, while the local government will provide some support. The committee will organise all kinds of tourist activities, the management of the volunteers, environmental conservation education and the Water Resources Conservation Fund (WRCF).

All forms of ecotourism activities will be low-impact and small-scale, and the WRCF will supervise these activities to ensure there is no pollution or damage.

• To improve the water space.

• To enhance wetland areas and an elkfriendly theme for the reserve.

• To improve the traffic situation.

change it to grazing area for elk and plant natural vegetation. This will not only expand the elks’ grazing area, but also offer a greater supply of food. In addition, the expropriation of nearby agricultural land could effectively reduce the impact of human behaviour on wildlife. As for the wetlands, management and maintenance mainly focus on preventing wetland degradation. This site is rich in plant species and has good growth, so it will only need to strengthen its daily maintenance and ensure dead plants are replaced. At the present stage, the facilities in this nature reserve are too old and cannot be well integrated with the natural scenery.

Dafeng Elk Nature Reserve is the world’s largest elk nature reserve with the largest population of wild elk in the world.

This site is located in an area where the temperature is suitable for elk. The Dafeng Elk Nature Reserve is not only rich in history, but also rich in animal and plant resources. It was once the natural home of the elk, but they were driven from the area due to a combination of man-made and natural factors.They were then reintroduced by the UK in 1986. With the increase in the elk population, the areas of land and water in the reserve are no longer able to satisfy the growth of wild elk. In addition to this, there are the negative effects that the behaviour of nearby farmers and human visitors have on wildlife. The original facilities in the area are also inadequate to meet the diverse needs of people. Through management and maintenance, I hope to solve these problems.

Conservation of wetlands, wild elk and wildlife are key to the project. In order to provide more living space for elk that have been released into the wild, I chose to suggest that the government expropriate the nearby farmland and breeding area, 5

Endcliffe Park is a popular and highly used city park near the centre of Sheffield which holds many different kinds of activities. For example: music festivals, physical activities, activities with animals, children’s activities, social activities and amusements. There are also many facilities for citizens to use and enjoy in the park. Most of the park is surrounded by residential areas and commercial streets; this is a relatively busy community.

Endcliffe Park is loved by the surrounding residents. Michelle Mullins, 42, believes: “This park is loved by many people. Not only can it be dangerous to be filled with so much water, but it can have devastating effects on wildlife and the park itself.” This is because the project Protecting Sheffield from Flooding made Endcliffe Park a flood storage area to slow down the flow, helping to prevent further deterioration downstream.

Due to the city’s geographic location, Sheffield is located at the confluence of rivers, and the park is positioned in a lowlying area. Flooding will affect the economy, ecology, heritage protection and other aspects of the park and its surrounding areas. We can see that the flood risk zone in the site is located along the brook, and across the grassland of Endcliffe Park, and that the size of the flood risk zone towards the east of the site is very large. Not only is there a risk of flooding from rivers or the sea, but also from surface water. This poses an even more serious flood risk than rivers. The roads near Endcliffe Park will be submerged by surface water if it floods.

The project area is Nanhu Park and its surrounding areas. Nanhu Park is located at Nanhu E Rd, Shuangliu, Chengdu, Sichuan, China. It covers an area of 6,000 acres and was completed in July 2009. I chose this Chengdu Nanhu Park for two reasons: one is because it enjoys a very advantageous geographical location surrounded by two rivers, the scenery is very beautiful, and the green land resources and water resources are very rich.

The park not only has a wetland park area, but also a theme park (amusement park).

The second reason is because Nanhu Park carries many decades of local residents’ memories and is an important place for their entertainment. And because of the convenient transportation, the park has a great opportunity to develop into the most popular comprehensive park in southern Chengdu.

The main problems in the park are flooding (and water pollution), green space pollution, and lack of biodiversity. My vision is to make Nanhu Park the most popular revitalized park and a park that is conducive to the development of flood resilience in Chengdu. I used the concept of sponge city to solve the main problem of flooding. “Sponge city” means that the city is like a sponge and has good flexibility in adapting to environmental changes and responding to natural disasters. It absorbs water, stores water, seeps and purifies water when it rains, and releases and uses the stored water when needed.

The additional funding can be invested in the improvement of existing facilities, as well as in introducing extra facilities. From an environmental perspective, unattractive and poorly designed holes in the golf course can be removed to provide space for new facilities and reduce pressure on operational expenses. The project aims to reduce the number of greens near Woolley Wood to maximize ecological value, introduce new facilities for different activities, utilise the space by cooperating with local organisations to organise various activities, improve the existing facilities and greens, and improve the finances of the golf course.

LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT

The site’s problems are mainly caused by historical factors and activities surrounding the environment. Since the 1960s, due to the building of a new road connecting Taipa and Coloane Island, the original waterway has been divided in two, slowing the flow of the water. Consequently, a mangrove forest was formed, attracting migratory birds. By 1988, the Macau government launched a “reclamation project”. Because of the reclamation that was carried out on both sides of Continuity Road, the study area changed from mudflats to closed freshwater lakes, and most of the mangroves were damaged.

Since the year 2000, the change from seawater to freshwater in Taipa Wetland has meant the mangrove has been unable to survive and the type of vegetation has changed accordingly. The entire system has been changed from the original mangrove ecosystem to an artificial wetland.

In the south of the study area, there is a road with a heavy flow of traffic beyond which is a bustling commercial area with large casinos. The northwest side of the study area is rich in historical and religious sites, thereby attracting more tourists. The study area is the only route from the business centre to the historical and religious attractions. A large number of tourists flock to the study area for this reason, resulting in a reduction in the number of migratory birds due to the noise and pollution brought by the flow of people.

Additionally, on the northwest side of the study area is the municipal swimming pool.

This drains directly into the lake, causing pollution and damage to the surrounding vegetation and entire ecosystem. Local residents and visitors to the site do not know much about mangroves or migratory birds, nor do they know how to protect these birds’ habitats. Therefore, the vision for this study area is to restore ecology to allow wildlife to return to the wetlands, and to become a sustainable nature learning centre that integrates education, particularly for local children, with sightseeing.

The area I chose for this special project is located in Macau, on the southeast coast of mainland China. Named “Baía de Nossa Senhora da Esperança Wetland Ecological Zone”, it covers an area of 30hm2 and includes a lake, woodland, mangrove cultivation zone, viewing zone, Taipa Houses-Museum and Tai Tam Mountain Viewing Terrace. Since Macau used to be a Portuguese colony, its official name is Portuguese, but locals in Macau always call it Taipa Wetland. It’s not only the most important wetland ecoregion in Macau, but also one of the main habitats for migratory birds, including a globally endangered species: the black-faced spoonbill. I chose the site as I am worried about its ecological destruction and water pollution causing migratory birds to lose their habitat.

The park is a city park which was opened in the Victorian era and constitutes woodland, heritage sites and entertainment facilities. It is located 2.3 miles from Sheffield City Centre. Surrounding the park is a dense residential area with four schools, meaning that residents and students are the main visitors.

Visitors will be made to feel welcome and have their interests raised by people in the house. It is also expected that useful insects like bees and butterflies will increase in number, enticed by the nectar of aesthetic flowers.

The park will continue to be used, as it is still well visited, but it needs managing to maintain and improve its quality for users. The park shows signs of some issues like a poor understory and low levels of biodiversity. To this end, the park will diversify its species through systematic vegetation management and encouraging an attractive and eco-friendly woodland. It will also attract many visitors and inform them of the ecological and historical importance of the park.

The project will successfully bring together stakeholders to carry out their roles and cooperate organically. Sheffield City Council will manage the overall parts as the park’s owner. The Friends group operates the park practically with volunteers. Professional partnerships support the park with their expertise, as well as funding. They will each be encouraged to perform their individual tasks, helping the park to achieve its vision, and thereby contributing to community development.

The project’s vision is to encourage attractive and eco-friendly woodland, and improve the area surrounding Bishops’ House Museum. It will create a healthy society where nature, history, and people will meet in the city to coexist and prosper together. The project aims to ensure a sustainable environment and biodiverse, aesthetic landscape.

Providing an aesthetic landscape through vegetation management in this urban park and increasing biodiversity are at the core of this project. Thinning trees will allow more light to reach the ground and the poor understory to regenerate.

Coppicing and pollarding will increase species diversity by forming different layers of woodland to provide wildlife with proper shelter. Therefore, there will be vibrant and sustainable woodland in the city.

LANDSCAPE MANAGEMENT

This improvement plan introduces the concept of natural play in third space, where children can spend their spare time outside of home and school. By providing a vibrant third space with various forest activities, children will have a “healing escape” which allows them to experience uncertainties, risks, curiosity, and to freely make mistakes, enjoy their freedom and also improve literacy and numeracy skills.

Meanwhile, by spending time planting in children’s allotments, they are able to feel the seasonal changes and enjoy growing and harvesting, helping them to acquire vital skills to fulfil their potential in a rapidly changing world and make a positive contribution to society.

My vision to create an environmentally-friendly third space and encourage children and families to enjoy nature outdoors contains three major aims: • Introduce various vibrant forest activities, encouraging children to explore and enjoy the natural environment; • Provide attractive natural play areas with safety and security, welcoming more children to engage in physical and social activities; • Encourage children to plant in children’s allotments, and involve families and the community. I intend to introduce a series of natural play facilities, including climbing nets, rope ladders and tree stumps, and set interpretation panels introducing inspiring new types of forest games, such as den building.

My primary motivation for choosing the Morley Street Allotments is that I found the site has been derelict land which is undervalued and unutilised for years. Meanwhile, inadequate space for activities has been provided in two primary schools in the vicinity. The site (14ha) is situated in Walkley, in the northwest of Sheffield, and includes allotments, Rivelin Primary School’s playing fields, spontaneous woodland on derelict allotments and a younger woodland which underwent vegetation clearance in 2008.

There are two key problems in the area: the rate of childhood obesity is relatively higher, and that of schoolchildren reaching the standard of reading is much lower than the average for Sheffield and England.

Children’s wellbeing is the key driver for this project, in the context of a worldwide slightly rising trend of suffering from mental illness and a downward trend of physical fitness levels which might contribute to illnesses such as depression and obesity.

The Forest Belt will become an alternative planning zone, it is planted as a forest that wraps around our towns and cities of the future. The productive landscape is managed for leisure and becomes the lungs for the city. The project promotes an opportunity for a degrowth society of the future with a school at its heart - to inspire a generation of the future to become intrinsically related to the fabric of place. The proposal is a primary school within a Forest Belt settlement, where the landscape becomes an innate learning

environment. The school grows over time, developing from a community facility to a school; using resources that are available at that point in time. This is a project that’s about the organic growth of a child, the growth of a resource and the growth of a community.

In March 2019, the Environment Agency announced that England would be in the ‘Jaws of Death’ of a freshwater crisis within 25 years. The way we perceive, use, and design with water is utterly unsustainable – and breweries are among the largest offenders. It can take as many as 60 pints of water to produce just one pint of beer. The Burton Baths project is an ambitious combined architecture and landscape proposal, designed to change the way we think about water as a resource.

is treated and repurposed for public swimming and bathing in a new landmark building for the town. The building is embedded within a dynamic ‘washlands’ landscape at the pinch-point of a new sustainable drainage strategy for the town, with disused industrial spaces repurposed as stormwater retention basins and microparks.

This project explores a truly social form of social housing, proposing a community-focused neighbourhood which knits into and re-stitches the fragmented townscape of Burton-UponTrent. The scheme celebrates the benefits of investing in those who need it the most by promoting social interaction and delivering urban resilience. It proposes two new urban routes which reach out to existing communities and connect them to the town centre, with spaces for movement, pausing, meeting and play. The

scheme incorporates public facilities and resident-owned businesses along these routes to support residents and bring the public in. Courtyards provide private and shared spaces to meet, grow, play and learn, with SuDS ponds and swales for habitat, education and water management. The rear facades of the homes soften the transition between inside and out with perforations which play with the way sunlight enters the homes.

The project identifies an opportunity to challenge Burton’s dwindling industrial brewing identity and the evolution of a new, imagined future as the ‘Capital’ of The National Forest. Rewilding as an alternative and experimental approach to landscape creation is explored in order to reframe attitudes towards landscape aesthetics.

Providing the opportunity for the creation of a novel and dynamic botanical garden landscape and proposed new architecture, the Rewilding Research Institute sits at the heart of the town. Situated within an

expansive former brewery, the proposal seeks to shift the image of the site from one of industry to one of vegetation and climate change mitigation. A new model for inland aquaculture, this project is designed for low ecological impact and low energy food production in the farming of trout and aquaponic produce. Such changes to our food industry will be critical if we are to re-establish our habitat and become carbon neutral by 2050. The proposal also frees up previously farmed land on the site to be restored as an intensive wetland eco-park, as an attraction for the people of Burton or beyond to visit. Separately to its function of food production, the fishery also makes use of

an adjacent nutrient-rich sewage outflow stream to breed insects. These will then be used to cover a portion of the trout’s feedstock and reduce reliance on imports.

In summary, the scheme demonstrates how farming can be more integrated within its environmental and social context.

PROJECT NEWARK

An integrated brief was designed for each of our three undergraduate programmes: Landscape Architecture and Ecology, Landscape Architecture and Planning and Architecture and Landscape. In developing their individual design manifesto, each student has applied the knowledge and skills that they have acquired throughout their three years of study, exploring and responding to the ideas and landscape challenges they have found most stimulating.

Newark was chosen because of its unique landscape setting and history. The townscape presents a rich tapestry of buildings, alleyways and courtyards that cluster around a large, central market square. It is however the town’s relationship to the surrounding agricultural landscape that most clearly defines Newark’s identity and which also sets the context for this year’s studio. The town is perched high

above its surroundings and its western edge is sharply defined by the imposing ruins of Newark Castle, which looks out across the River Trent and park where the students have developed their design proposals.

The Trent creates an exciting and challenging setting to which the students must respond.

Whilst the river was tamed in the late 18th century with the construction of Newark lock - to enable trade with the industrial towns of the East Midlands - it has remained prone to flooding and shifting its course. In recent years, changes in climate and land use and rising sea levels have all combined to increase the likelihood and severity of flooding. This threat was made real in the first week of the project when the Trent burst its banks and flooded the site.

Set within this context the following projects explore a range of topical issues that include: urban re-wilding, designing for social inclusion and resilient planting strategies that anticipate future climates.

The small market town of Newark is equally rich in ecological opportunity as it is character and history. Whilst regional landmarks including the St Mary Magdalene Parish Church, Royal Market Square and Newark Castle ruins give the town a lasting romantic tone, the River Trent aquatic corridor has the capability to sustain a vibrant new ecosystem. The Restoration Park brings these together in a celebration of history and the natural world.

To celebrate the site’s historic context, the park uses visual connections and landform

to create a battlefield-like series of rolling mounds which are overlooked by the Newark castle. In order to bring new life into the park as well as provision a wealth of ecosystem services the park will undergo targeted habitat restoration. A renaturalised river edge and the acceptance of spontaneous vegetation ensures future biodiversity.

Winner of THE EXPERIMENTAL LANDSCAPE DESIGN AWARD

This design is focused on the idea of temporality. Water, light and sound are all ever-changing elements that influence how the space is perceived. The design welcomes climatic changes, allowing spaces to flood to create temporary play opportunities and bringing excitement into the landscape through pools and waterfalls. A cycle of wet to dry, the design will provide interest in contrasting climates, giving nature the ability to creep and dominate the creek when the water is gone. In time for events, the open grass meadow can be mown to create pockets of changing spaces, as well as to provide space for entertainment.

The inclusion of an outdoor exhibition space and market area will provide the opportunity for DEFRA to expand its indoor displays, providing educational features that promote pro-environmental behaviours to create a greener future for Newark.

The landform design will create different opportunities during different levels of flooding, and the planting design aims to both change the spatial experience and restore riparian habitats over the decades.

The main focus of the site is around connection and its function as a bridge. The space between the new DEFRA building and the old castle is connected by crossing the river to the site. The space represents the interconnectedness of ancient and future times, and the site will be used to help the town get closer to nature. I hope that the new park will allow for the bridging of time and space, across trends and traditional aesthetics, to become a new characteristic of the town with the ability to combat climate change.

Castle View Park is an ecologically focused landscape that encourages visitors to nurture the habitats, interact with the environment, develop with the seasons and grow the relationship between DEFRA and the public. Maintaining a strong view of the historic castle across the park with an interactive stream not only connects the riverside landscape to Newark but also highlights DEFRA’s aim to improve transparency and connectivity with the public.

A sensitive, ecological approach creates a welcoming civic space for visitors and wildlife, whilst also being considerate to the river and using flooding as a positive element. Seasonal changes, such as water levels and vegetation, provide a strong visual of the changing climate and benefit children’s understanding of climate change. This will hopefully encourage the continued nurturing of the site, in addition to developing a wider awareness of the importance of caring for the environment.

The design concept is to create an integrated water-based ecological urban park, equally providing dignity and happiness to natural and cultural services.

In ecologically dominant areas, humans are only observers of natural processes, not participants. On the contrary, in areas dominated by human activities, plants are embellishments used to beautify the environment.

In woodland areas, visitors walk on forest tracks. The structure of the trees creates a luminous space, inspiring people

In Newark-on-Trent, flooding has been the most troublesome issue to occur in the city so far, and this problem will only get worse in the foreseeable future. It is an issue that has caused public panic in recent years.

Therefore, the priorities of Defra Riverside Park are to provide a space that can mitigate against flooding and reduce public concern. To achieve these aims, the park will provide spaces for relaxing and de-stressing that have great connectivity to the town and make the park more tolerant

of flooding. By improving the interactions between the public and these spaces, more visitors will be attracted to Defra where they can learn more about climate change.

It is a win-win scenario for both Defra and the public.

The main idea in making this design is to promote an inclusive riverside park at Newark that is particularly focused on the concept of openness. I would like to enhance this feature and combine it with habitat restoration design in order to construct a dialogue with the new home of DEFRA whilst echoing the historical elements of the site such as the castle.

The sunken plaza and water’s edge form a space that provides a see-through effect on a human scale and construct a sense of connection between spaces.

Undulating hills and the solid tree canopy physically create a semi-enclosed space, but visually create a much more welcoming view that you can see through at the top or at the bottom. In addition to this, the sunken plaza adds to the scale of openness and may encourage engagement with people sitting on the steps.

Welcome to Riverside Flow, Newark’s brand-new hub for wildlife and people. Working closely with DEFRA, the new landscape aims to provide a range of invigorating and interesting experiences which ultimately bond a relation between visitors and nature.

A scheme driven by ecological restoration, water manipulation and social connectivity, the site is environmentally resilient and adaptive to climate change.

The project aims to deliver a low impact, highly biodiverse greenspace to explore and relax, whilst mitigating against flooding in this high-risk area.

A system of floodable islands will help to slow the river’s flow and allow for various types of vegetation to thrive on the soft banks, whilst a series of interconnected boardwalks will make these islands navigable.

Offering much more than just a landscape, the Riverside Flow is the new environmental hub of Newark.

A concept that submerges Newark into an underwater world brimming with colour, imagination and mystery.

The site will allow the user to be as a fish navigating a marine odyssey. Newark Submerged aims to provide a site that will attract visitors from all around, with spaces that feel other worldly and unique.

The highly conceptual design will bring a large social media interest and following due to its spaces perfect for taking pictures!

This will be beneficial for DEFRA in increasing influence, understanding, and income by attracting people to visit and learn. Using the landscape to teach along with provoking imaginative and emotive responses to these issues that will resonate with the user. There are three key landmark spaces that are focused on in the exhibition: a simulated reef, a deep-sea woodland and a pinnacle.

Providing everybody with an excuse to spend time outdoors, Trent Odyssey Park uses an adventurous design language uniquely relatable to all that seek solace in the natural environment.

Taking inspiration from descriptions of mystical places in great tales of fantasy and adventure, DEFRA’s new campus, surrounded by vibrant perennial meadow strips, mimics a castle protected by its moat.

The main plaza extends into formal, linear avenues that join all the major connective routes together, acting as a visual metaphor for the sun and the power of its rays.

Informal pedestrian circulation is considered in line with the propensity of the site to flood. Raised boardwalk structures reach out from the water’s edge, extending through swathes of restored wet woodland, creating opportunities for cycling and jogging. Floating jetties facilitate waterrelated activities, improving the connection between residents and the River Trent.

In this project, to support the DEFRA Campus and to invite people to use the site, the river will function as a main element of the design structure. In the DEFRA building area, I propose to bring and maintain more visitors to the building, while a range of space will be provided and a small landscaped gathering point will be set around the building. To enhance the attractiveness of the building and the river, paths with a ‘flow’ wave will connect and divide different landscape zones. The function of these routes with

their different views will be maintained and active people will use and play on this site even when flooding happens. When considering future impact, not only will human activities be taken into account, but more wetland and drainage SuDS will also be established here to help with the river restoration.

The overarching concept of the new park is garden rooms: pockets of wildlife which users can discover and use to relax. These garden rooms also enhance the community’s access to natural and communal events spaces. The vegetational structures in these rooms give each a unique atmosphere – an experience that users can rediscover as they change throughout the day or across the seasons. These garden rooms also provide a rural setting to support the DEFRA building, mirroring the interweaving nature of the town itself. The

symmetry of the park and its surrounding area ties it into the surrounding landscape, making it approachable to the public, while the juxtaposition of the DEFRA building against Newark Castle creates a striking first step in the progression of Newark town. Geometric design language has determined the spatial structures used in the park: defining sightlines, shapes and topography.

LANDSCAPE AND PLANNING The brief anticipates Newark hosting ‘Manifesta 15’, a nomadic biennial cultural festival that’s is scheduled to take place in 2024. The students must respond to design proposals for three buildings that will live beyond the life of the festival and include a research space, workshop and cafe and story-telling hub.

Working with the architect, their landscape proposals must also accommodate four temporary structures that will be removed at the end of the festival.

The River Trent and Newark Castle are iconic in this area, and can be seen to represent the place of Newark. The Trent was a major working river until after the Second World War. Different types of cargo, such as wool, coal and timber, were unloaded on the wharves and stored in warehouses. Recreational activities on the Trent were also popular in the past, where people enjoyed rowing and sailing, etc.

The history of the River Trent is what excites me about this site and I would like to develop the site based on this idea.

In my design, water channels will run across the whole site and allow people to play different small-scale water activities along these channels. Stand up paddleboards and single scull rowing boats will fit perfectly into the site. People will be able to explore the whole site along the water channels and enjoy the surrounding landscape.

My design for New Fort Park challenges the stereotypical, educates and empowers, providing compelling space for the immediate community whilst fulfilling the demands for the European Biennial Manifesta 2024. Lying at the intersection of two great Roman roads, inspiration for the park came from Newark’s castle and long history, which not only helped to create a strong identity but encouraged diversity, overcoming perceived barriers.

A corridor of protection, cascading spatial experiences using bands of defence, areas of sacrificial land and intervention, have been designed to showcase the relationship between static permanence and resilient dynamism, bringing the impact of climate change to front of mind and encouraging pro-environmental behaviours. Its focus is on what draws people in, what keeps us together and how that can be protected, how space is temporal and why it will endure.

A transitional landscape that aims to: • Create a destination • Connect contrasting spaces • Utilise the water for immersive experiences

Harnessing the intended uses of the permanent buildings: - The research building is protected by trees to give a peaceful atmosphere that allows the user to concentrate without distraction.

- The workshop space has one side with a more ordered landscape to give clarity of

thought, and another side that is looser and more organic in order to encourage freedom and creativity.

- The storytelling hub is suspended over wetland to give a more magical atmosphere, as we can see the landscape gradually drop away around it, but also to make it more accessible from ground level.

This landscape aims to use Newark’s agricultural history to drive the future of the area, thereby creating a productive environment for the community.

Breaking Down Social and Structural Barriers.

Frequently our actions are confined by the weather, yet many are relatively disengaged with nature. A dynamic landscape is engaging: we have to respond to the environment and therefore are more aware of its power and possibility.

‘Trent’ is connected to the Celtic word ‘Strong Flood’. Defending against flooding is a major and growing issue.

LookOut responds by designing and engineering with nature. Additionally, this

landscape combined with Manifesta will break down barriers of division and create a place of refuge. Although the design incorporates battle fortifications and structures, the purpose is not defence; it is to reflect that while this was once an area of conflict and battle, at a time when we could build a large barrier against nature and flooding, we are choosing to let our barriers down and find a balance.

The aim of this disruptive park is to challenge the current status quo. After witnessing the dominance and importance of the River Trent, it was clear there was a lack of connection between the water and the public. The water’s edge was enhanced through the design, creating a series of social spaces for people to gather and interact. The water interacts with the river bank in contrasting ways, through soft wetland vegetation and hard concrete structures. Responding to the Manifesta, I designed a landscape that promotes

inclusion by creating interaction through shared moments. These shared moments vary seasonally, so people come together for a short time to appreciate them in enclosed and intimate spaces. This new wooded riverside park, with spontaneous glades and social spaces, aims to bridge the divide between the people and the water.

Taking inspiration from the rise and fall of Newark Castle, the new park proposal accommodates for increases and decreases in visitors, flood levels, social events such as Manifesta, light levels, visuals and interest.

Trees of various height and density cover the park. Poplar trees are the tallest of the trees and give a different sense of scale to that of a cherry tree. This gives visitors a rising and falling perspective of their own sense of scale in comparison to nature.

The theme of rising and falling continues within the landform of the site which helps to mitigate against extreme flooding, but also provides some more private micro-climates for visitors to choose between.

The boundary of the historic River Trent, and the temporal changes of its boundary, reflects current and future challenges brought to light by Manifesta through the medium of the arts, and thereby facilitates dialogue. In response, the landscape also provides the opportunity for a flow of dialogue at any moment in time. Building on this idea, the internal storytelling building functions as a gathering space and ultimately acts as the central location and destination for dialogue. It is enclosed by an overflow

for the River Trent and existing mature willows, providing an in-between space and the opportunity to bring inside outside. Its isolated nature resonates with neighbouring temporal mounds, allowing views in and out of the space, and aids in performance as it becomes the most permanent feature of the landscape amid the deepest floods.

The regenerated park therefore reflects a journey of enlightenment through research and storytelling.

The new Riverside Park focuses on what brings people together whilst acknowledging subtle differences throughout the landscape; unlocking hidden culture in Newark, whilst revealing the true potential of the River Trent. It aims to create an inclusive, educational environment that looks towards the future with a nod to its past. It is a resilient and dynamic space that reconnects people to the river. The project took inspiration from the town itself; the patterns in the architecture and narrow streets that move

the pedestrian from one space into another.

This heavily influenced the ‘Keyhole’ space concept. Juxtaposing spaces allow the user to experience very different things as they move through the landscape. Some of these spaces are separated and some more integrated to play on the idea of enclosure and exposure, with the aim to encourage close encounters and opportunities for strangers to collide.

The Great North Road was a route that bridged trade, culture, and communities together. Newark and The River Trent were an integral part of this route, but the town has been left behind in recent years.

The Great North Park aims to encourage people to observe, learn, and bridge communities, cultures, and ideas together whilst hosting the Biennial Manifesta.

These ideas of observation, learning, and bridging aim to encourage visitors to

take notice of how important and powerful nature is and to take home a new-found respect for the environment. The idea of bridging came from Newark itself where bridges of all sizes traverse the river and canals - all offering differing experiences.

The observation of nature will be the glue that bridges the town and local communities together in a hope of healing the divides found in this landscape.

Notre Newark aims to reinforce the town’s historic significance and local community by reconnecting its chronicled international link in order to celebrate global and local culture. The park and the European Biennial Manifesta 2024 event combined can reinforce the balance between both people and people, and nature and people.

The design considers potential floodwater capacity by reinforcing the river’s habitats and edges. This increases the capacity of the site to accommodate

floodwater efficiently and reduce the potential impact to the surrounding infrastructure, allowing people to be exposed to, and aware of, these events safely. However, natural occurrences like flooding and social festivals like the European Biennial Manifesta 2024 are both temporary events and therefore Notre Newark will need to have the ability to adapt and cater for the different needs that arise.

Our increasingly urban world has resulted in a society where we are disconnected from each other and our surroundings. Waterfront Way addresses this issue of fragmentation in Newark, a town with a lack of access to quality green space and a community divided and detached from one another. The park therefore provides a chance to reconnect to people and to nature, bridging spaces for social interaction alongside those for local wildlife.

Consequently, the park features two unique sides - one more formal and structured with groves and grassy banks, and one wilder side. The new buildings for the Manifesta form the point of convergence, reconnecting these two landscapes, offering spaces for community reconnection both during the festival and once it ends.

Inspired by the river that flows through the park, the movements of the water and its nature, as well as how the different bridges along the river can create different interactions, this new park proposal allows for the creation of various spaces which offer different interactions through the use of vegetation, topography and scale. This park will connect communities, cultures, nature, and people of different generations together. It will aim at establishing a closer relationship with the river and creating rich habitat

zones. It will show people how important nature is, while teaching them about the environment and climate change, and how flooding is inevitable and is going to increase due to the changing climate.

Creating a space within Newark for all to interact with. The design focuses on ways in which sound can be reflected within the landscape, creating small spaces for individual people or groups to engage with for either pop up events or recreational activities, and creating a hotspot location within Newark’s town centre. The design looks at how Newark’s historical features can be enhanced in connection to the site, as an important part of the heritage of the town, using vegetation to frame spaces and improve biodiversity. Park aims to be a reflection of the people who use it and allows the local community to adapt the space to meet their needs, creating a sustainable and versatile space for the future.

Grey to Green is a proposed scheme located on the town lock of Newark-on-Trent, UK. It is composed of two civic buildings: the new headquarters for the River Trust and the associated water museum. The island site is a key space in the development of the parish, representing a transition between the existing urban grain and an expansive floodplain, separated by the River Trent.

The key connection that bridges the urban and green spaces of Newark is situated at the centre of the scheme and continues over

the floodable landscape as a recreational walk, while providing mitigation against flooding. The green space on the island is also a “pocket space”, planted with hardy, drought-resistant plants as an extension of the education-focused programme of the architecture.

“Making life better by water” will be the focus of the proposal for the Canal and River Trust Headquarters sitting along the River Trent. The core ambition for this scheme is to improve the health and well-being of staff and visitors by creating a stronger connection to nature and the water cycle through my design.

In addition, the building aims to teach people about the effects of climate change and how their actions can contribute to a global effort to mitigate these effects.

As a well-being charity, the Canal and

River Trust principles will be at the core of the design. The building will feature the Museum of Water at the centre of the scheme, encouraging visitors to gain an understanding for the value of water and the important work of the charity.

Stemming from an appreciation of the contrast between Newark’s small-scale and crafted built environment and the poor functional, cultural, and environmental integrity of its fringes, Crafting Spaces aims to catalyse dynamic and community-led change in Newark through a self-sufficient willow craft and antique restoration process. The aims of the project are to create a resilient town by 2050, and are carried out on different scales throughout the scheme: at masterplan, building, and landscape level. The building and landscape

enhance the public route from town to agricultural fields, and the public spaces along the river, with multiple landscape characteristics corresponding to building function and context. The domestic scale workshop spaces are a gateway from the further landscape into the town, and the courtyard planting provides a vibrancy in summer and a memory of past and future craft activity in winter.

A project to design a new print house and public landscape element for Newark-on-Trent. The project started with four initial manifesto statements: strengthening the town’s connection to the River Trent, responding to local vernacular, creating stronger connections throughout the town and adding a layer of ecology to the existing urban fabric of Newark. These key points gave the project clear direction.

Climate change was a key factor in the project. After exploring the nature of the River Trent, it became clear that the

site would be exposed to more prevalent and severe flooding events in the future, adding another layer to the initial site response. This allowed me to focus my landscape strategy on temporarily floodable landscapes, exploring appropriate planting and construction elements for the future to give the project a sense of longevity.

The Canal and River Trust is a national charity which looks after 2,000 miles of waterways. They are also responsible for maintaining 2,980 bridges, 1,580 locks and 335 aqueducts to ensure they are always available.

The project aims to build a new headquarters and museum for the Canal and River Trust, to provide a quality office environment for staff, and also to show the history and contribution of the institution to the public.`

For the landscape part of this project, I will focus on the integration of landscape and architecture through different textures, materials and colours, and consider a vision for 2050: to survive issues of flooding and climate change.

This new home for the Canal and River Trust encompasses the aim of the charity to provide quality waterfront spaces that promote wellbeing. It provides a functional headquarters that accommodates the maintenance of UK waterways, while giving the charity greater prominence in the community.

The island site is a stepping stone between town and landscape, and presents a unique opportunity to reconnect Newark with the River Trent. A citywide masterplan will aim to improve river

accessibility by creating diverse, connected open spaces along the waterfront.

The design of the Canal and River Trust HQ is centred around creating ‘A landscape for climate extremes.’ The journey of water is celebrated to facilitate an educational landscape that is resilient to drought and flooding, while the building enhances the sense of being in a fluctuating and changeable landscape.

Aligning the future of plastic waste with the past, stretching a process of plastic re-manufacturing across a historical river edge. Plastic waste arriving at the riverside is processed and later symbolically lifted over the castle wall to be embedded into the castle grounds in an underground vault.

The view of the castle and a new culture of recycling will become iconic to Newarkon-Trent.

A new plastic craft industry generates prototype landscape infrastructure, new terracing is retained by hybrid gabion walls partially filled with waste and newly extruded plastic aggregates. The building plays on the water tower typology and acts as a regenerative, sustainable, and changing form that is capable of recycling grey water and providing irrigation to the surrounding landscape with an underground water tank. This new home for the Canal and River Trust is positioned on the canal front of the River Trent and acts as a museum of water celebrating Newark’s boating heritage, a workspace for the charity, and an educational space to encourage and teach water management techniques. It acts as an embodiment of the waterways charity in order to recycle, maintain, irrigate and harness water through building technologies. The building’s timber frame is a symbolic gesture towards the three ancient crack willows on site, which are integrated into the open water tank system to control water overflow and provide a flexible framework for the future of 2050.

The museum and workshops define an internal courtyard and outward-looking gardens that connect the scheme to its context. The centre sits at the core of a wider masterplan to link the two sides of the river more intricately and to revitalize the existing dry dock and works yard, celebrating Newark’s past reliance on the River Trent, the canals and narrowboats.

The river informs material choice: gravel deposits along the Trent become floodable gabions and support planting which is resilient to a changing climate.

Steel and timber from the narrowboats become the buildings, floating above the waterline. The power of time and water is referenced in the contrasting use of durable and weathering materials.
