Montbello Native Reports on a Community Project Close to His Heart Montbello Organizing Committee’s Fresh Lo Makes the News Kelie Kyser, Gomez Howard Group
Justin Adams, CBS4 news reporter and Montbello native, was recently handed the opportunity to share a positive story about the neighborhood he reveres. While discussing upcoming projects in the newsroom, Justin learned about a special assignment for the station’s “Elevating Black Voices” series slated to run during Black History Month. When a colleague discovered they wouldn’t be able to report the story, Adams enthusiastically stepped in to “Cover Colorado First” in the neighborhood he loves. “Once I saw the word Montbello, I didn’t even read the rest - I immediately put my hand up,” he shared. “I’ve always wanted to talk about the beauty and sense of community in Montbello, so I jumped at the opportunity.” Coverage of the Montbello Organizing Committee’s (MOC) Fresh local and equitable Lo Hub (Fresh Lo) project has been magnified during a time when matters of food insecurity, and lack of affordable
housing, hit far too close to home for many Coloradans. A statistic Justin found most compelling had to do with the way transportation affects equity. “One of the things I learned that I found eye-opening was that one in four people who live in Montbello don’t have access to a car,” he revealed. Many of us underestimate the significant role transportation plays when it comes to accessing grocery stores with healthy and reasonably priced options. MOC identified the needs of the community and skillfully implemented a solution to improve health outcomes, provide residents with the stability of ownership, and a conduit to revitalize arts and culture in the neighborhood. The organization’s mission is certainly newsworthy – something Adams notes made it necessary for him to cover the story. “There is great importance in making sure that people have a place to go and get fresh produce. To make sure that the family has sustenance, a place to live, and to be able to build wealth – it’s extremely important.” As we settle into the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic, inequities in communities of color continue to be exposed. Justin emphasized the significant importance of raising awareness of these issues and doing something to level the playing field, also known as society. “Don’t we want people to be able to thrive? Money shouldn’t dictate whether your family has a nutritious meal at night or if you have a safe place to lay your head. That’s why [Fresh Lo] is so important. To make sure everyone is cared for and that we all thrive together.”Y
