Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is a private, not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. Since its founding, more than 300,000 women have joined the organization. The organization is a sisterhood of predominantly Black, college-educated women.

The sorority currently has over 1,000 collegiate and alumnae chapters located in the United States, Canada, Japan (Tokyo and Okinawa), Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica, the Republic of Korea, the Arabian Gulf, Southern Africa and West Africa.

Dear Sorors, On behalf of the Charismatic and Courageous Central Region, I am delighted to bring greetings to the devastating and dynamic Denver Alumnae Chapter as they celebrate Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated 109th Founders Day. Every year, we must celebrate our 22 Founders and how their vision went from a surviving newly developing organization into a thriving $55 million corporation that has transformed communities worldwide. Since 1913, we have distinguished ourselves as a public service organization that boldly confronts the challenges of the day.

We have made great strides in the areas of education, economics, physical and mental health, and most importantly, social action.

In keeping with the Founders Day theme, “From Surviving to Thriving: Still We Rise”, I encourage you to remain spiritually healthy, physically dedicated, mentally inspired, and socially organized so that we can confront all challenges with fortitude.

Thank you to the members of the Denver Alumnae Chapter for your steadfast commitment to doing the work of Delta throughout the Denver Metropolitan Area. Congratulations to all honorees, and a special thank you to President Janice Satchell, the Founders Day Committee, and everyone who played a role in making this Founders Day Celebration possible.

As we celebrate our 109th Founders Day, I reflect on how far we have come as an organization of changemakers and how our illustrious founders built an unshakable foundation that has withstood the test of time. This is simply a testament to the tenacity and strength that has been passed down directly from our 22 collegiate founders. We are all blessed to be living legacies of women who have trailblazed when there has been no path to follow- we are descendants of visionaries, pioneers for social action, and galvanizers. With more than 300,000 members who are all committed to the ideals of Delta, I am especially proud to represent those who call our dear Central Region home and contributed to the theme “From Surviving to Thriving: Still We Rise” encapsulates our seventh jewel, Justice. We continue the fight of our ancestors through our life journey fighting for all things just. As we join for this Founders Day celebration, I charge you to reflect on how far we’ve come as both a sorority and as black individuals. Let us celebrate how far we’ve advanced, and honor the journey that still lies ahead of us.

Greetings to the Denver Alumnae Chapter Sorors and Sorors Beyond: It is with great pride and excitement that we, your 2022 Founders Day Chair and Co-Chair, extend best wishes on the occasion of the Denver Alumnae Chapter's 83rd Founders Day Celebration.

Since the conception on January 13, 1913, the 22 founders of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. exemplified the foundational ideals of our sisterhood with guiding examples for lighting the way towards progress and wisdom for all African American women. For Deltas, it is arguably the most important day of the year; a day we remember our 22 founders and their legacy. We are indebted to those young women who had the vision that led to the creation of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. For this reason, we continue to honor our Founders each year.

During this challenging pandemic season, the Physical and Mental Health committee and the International Awareness and Involvement committee collaborated their efforts to underscore the importance of our well-being, thus our theme…’Surviving to Thriving: Still, We Rise!’ Soror Beverly Smith, Ph.D. of Atlanta, Ga will be our guest speaker. Soror Smith is the President of The American Mental Health Counselors Association.

Unfortunately, we cannot gather as we have in past years, therefore this year’s Founders Day will be presented virtually. We will honor and pay tribute to our Delta Dears, the foundation of our organization; and hold a Silent Auction, to assist with Our Five Point Programmatic Thrust efforts, of course, we will be entertained musically.

Healthy Family Recipe Recipes from "Simple Soulful Savory

Greens and Cornbread Upside-down Cake Serves 12

Preheat oven to 350 F

3 bunches or 1 ½ # 2 tbsp 1 med 2 drops 1 16 oz can ¼ Cup 4 ½ Cups 2 ½ Cups 1

Greens (Kale or Swiss Chard) Canola or Olive Oil Onion Tabasco Sauce (or chopped jalapeno pepper) Chicken Broth Splenda Cornbread Mix Buttermilk Clove Garlic Season with salt, pepper and Tabasco.

Salt & Pepper to Taste

1. Wash greens thoroughly and chop. Steam until wilted. Drain excess liquid. Sauté onion, jalapeno pepper and garlic in oil. Add sautéed mix with greens, season with salt, pepper and Tabasco and cook in chicken broth for about 15 minutes.

Drain excess liquid.

2. Mix cornbread mix, splenda and buttermilk in a bowl. Do not over mix.

3. Arrange greens in bottom of a greased rectangular pan lined with parchment (wax) paper. Pour the batter evenly over the greens and smooth out with spatula. Bake 30 – 40 minutes, until golden brown. Let stand 15 minutes before unmolding.

Options: If desired add one chopped jalapeno peeper sautéed with onion and a clove of garlic. Do not use jiffy, it is recommended that you make your own corn bread mix.

The Charter members included: Mae Thomas Adams, Elaine Brown Jenkins, Jessie Whaley Maxwell, Neophytes Kathryn Cohron, Marian (Bailey) Morrison, Ruby Cohron, Eleanor Critz and Claudine McCloud.

Soror Edna Kinchion, Grand Secretary assisted and formally organized the Beta Phi Chapter and Pyramid Club. Beta Phi Chapter was presented to the community on Sunday at Shorter Community AME Church, where Soror Kinchion was the guest speaker.

On Sunday morning, the ladies of Delta started the first Delta Day at Church at Shorter Community AME Church, where Soror Kinchion presented the new Beta Phi Chapter. She spoke from the subject “Our Responsibility.” Later, the Delta Emblem was given to the Chapter by the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

Beta Phi Charter Members Mary Kathryn Cohron Soror Cohron was born in St. Joseph, Missouri. Her father was called to serve as the first Pastor of New Hope Baptist Church. The Cohron family then moved to Denver in 1923. Soror Cohron graduated from University of Denver, Lamont School of Music receiving her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Piano Pedagogy. She was an experienced pianist-organist and played for New Hope Baptist Church, Scott United Methodist Church and Holy Redeemer Episcopal Church.

Jessie Whaley Maxwell Soror Maxwell graduated from Bishop College and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education as well as her Master’s Degree in Education. She was also an accompanist and organist and served as Director of Music at Zion Baptist Church. Soror Maxwell is the first African American Administrator in Denver Public Schools and the state of Colorado. She was named principal of Whittier Elementary School in 1955 until 1966. She then became principal of Columbine Elementary School until retirement in 1972.

Claudine Smith McCloud Soror McCloud was born in Denver and a graduate of University of Denver. She pledged Phi Sigma Iota, a National Romance Language Fraternity, an Honor Society, at the university. She was an active member of the Denver YWCA, where she was also employed. As a Junior NAACP, she attended the National NAACP Convention held at Zion Baptist Church in 1925. Soror McCloud was a member of Zion Baptist church for over 50 and a mother to one son, Burnis McCloud Jr. Ruby Cohron Soror Cohron earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology at the University of Denver. She was an accomplished pianist.

Eleanor Critz Soror Critz graduated from Colorado State Teachers’ College. She was a Playground Supervisor of Negro Women’s Club and Day Nursery. .

Hosted “Divas on Broadway-A Holiday Centennial Cabaret” with a “Harlem Renaissance Cabaret” theme and a student vocal competition for title and cash prize as “The Delta Voice”. Special guest National Arts and Letters Commission Chair Essie M. Jeffries was in attendance.

Implemented an EMBODI program-through adopting the Sims-Fayola International Academy, Denver's first all-male school. DAC donated school supplies and $3,000 resulting in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics room, being dedicated in honor of DAC. A quote of our choice was placed on a room plaque: “A dream doesn’t become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination and hard work” by Colin Powell. Implemented an After School Math Tutoring Program to help students excel in math Hosted a 75th Chapter Anniversary and Founders Day Celebration-The theme was "A Legacy of Love: Bridging Sisterhood and Service". Highlights included heart health awareness, keynote address by our National President Dr. Paulette Walker, and musical entertainment by Denver's First Lady Mary Louise Lee and Band. Partial proceeds benefited the American Heart Association. Among guest were Regional Director Billie Coachman and Honorary Member Wilma Webb.

Hosted a community Long Term Care Planning seminar- in partnership with AARP that included presentations from experts in long term care.

Partnered with the Urban League Denver chapter on a community wide Planting the Seed conference to address a variety of issues that continue to plague urban communities (unemployment, crime, etc) Participated in several Health walks - including St. Jude’s, Destination 5K, Komen Breast Cancer 5K, NAMI, American Heart Association, and March of Dimes Implemented an Adopt-A-School program - at Gateway High School (GHS); sponsored an Art Walk for 200+ students; Arts and Letters provided $375 in prizes for most creative, unique, and people’s choice; Donated $800 in school supplies Hosted a black owned business (BOB) challenge and supported 24 BOBs

Soror Gloria W. Lowman Bio Soror Gloria W. Lowman was born in 1935, a native of Pensacola, Florida, Gloria attended Florida A&M, where she pursued a degree in Nursing. She was initiated into the Beta Alpha Chapter November 1954. In 1956, Gloria was married and relocated to Denver, CO. She met several Deltas and immediately became a member of the Denver Alumnae Chapter, then Beta Phi. Soror Lowman embodies the characteristics of the acronym D.E.A.R.S. (Dedicated-Energetic-Active-RespectedSorors) as well as upholding our Nine Cardinal Virtues.

C – Soror Lowman has made it her personal ministry to find every Delta Dear in the metropolitan area that is sick and shut-in to make sure that they are remembered by the Chapter. Since relocating to Denver in 1956, when the Greek community was much smaller, she remembers those who are no longer able to attend meetings or activities.

Working within the Delta Dear committee and with the Sisterhood and Courtesy committee members, she has meticulously created her own lists of Dears with phone numbers and addresses.

C – Over the last several years, Gloria has picked up a fellow Delta Dear and Past President to facilitate her ability to attend the chapter’s meetings and activities. Twice a month, they made the trip to the beauty shop to make sure they both were perfectly coifed for church or whatever their schedules included.

D – Although technically challenged, Soror Gloria has made sure to have her sorority meeting materials and information ready for her to call into meetings via the telephone. She’s made sure to be able to attend those Zoom meetings, without skipping a beat! She was recently asked to participate in reciting the Eulogy of one of our deceased Sorors during a virtual triple Omega Omega Service.

F – Whether it was a bus to Iowa, a plane to Houston or a train to the Royal Gorge with the DEARS, Gloria loves to fellowship with her Sorors. It is her passion to make sure she has invited as many DEARS as possible to Founders Day, Arts and Letters events, and when they were able, those scrumptious monthly DEAR lunches.

F – Although Soror Lowman took a break to raise her family, upon reclamation in 2008 by her newly elected President daughter, Gloria has remained financial and active for the past thirteen years. Not being a Golden Life member, she has had to budget the Regular Member dues on her fixed income and pay/participate in chapter fundraisers and activities, as well as Regional and National meetings.

H & P – Soror Lowman has offered her honest opinion to the members of the Delta DEARS committee for the past thirteen years. She has not allowed the challenges of the myriad of changes in the technical arena to prevent her from participating as a valued member of the committee. She was recently featured in the chapter’s Delta Day @ Church program, virtually giving her remarks and “Words of Wisdom” to the Sorors during the fellowship tea after the church service.

J – As a registered nurse in the late ‘50’s and early ‘60’s, Soror Lowman is on record as being the first African American in her career choices, as a psychiatric nurse at Denver General and as a school nurse for Denver Public Schools.

The latter paved the way for several other Deltas to become school nurses.

T – With style and grace, Soror Lowman maintains her temperate demeanor at all occasions, meetings, fundraisers, etc., unless there is a game or contest and the “other” Gloria comes out, determined to win. Her smile is infectious and from DEAR to Doll, many rise and call her blessed.

Creamy Mashed Cauliflower 8 Servings 2# 2 cloves ½ cup 1/3 tsp

Cauliflower Garlic Real Mayonnaise Salt

1. Bring water to a boil.

2. Add Cauliflower and garlic.

3. Cook for 15 minutes or until tender, drain.

Professional Experience & Education: Dr. Smith has professional counseling experience in various settings to include private practice, public education, corrections, community counseling, and higher education respectively. She is the owner and principal therapist of “BSmith Consulting Group, LLC.” Smith is a PhD Mentor at Capella University and an adjunct Professor of Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Mercer University, where she teaches Psychopathology & Diagnosis, Cultural Perspectives in Counseling, and Ethics.

She is a proud two-time graduate of Tuskegee University (BS-Biology, Med Counseling/Higher Education), and earned counseling degrees from Troy University (EdS) as well as Amridge University (Ph.D.). Additionally, Dr. Smith has a certificate in Administration and Leadership from Kennesaw State University.

Dr. Smith is a native of Georgia and resides in Metro-Atlanta. She is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Eddie Smith, a sister to an AKA, and a dedicated auntie to three nieces who continued the legacy of attending Tuskegee University. Dr. Smith is passionate about her family and about empowering others to choose wellness. Her trademarked motto is “Success is a perspective. Healthiness is a way of life.”

Professional & Civic Engagement: With 26- years of experience, Dr. Beverly Smith has served the counseling profession while being an active member of various organizations. Smith serves as President & Interim CEO of the American Mental Health Counseling Association. Additionally, she has served as the organization’s Annual Conference Chair, Member of the Advancement of Clinical Practice, Chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Taskforce, and member of the Advancement for Clinical Practice Committee.

In 2016, she was AMHCA’s delegate at the 32nd Annual Rosalynn Carter Symposium on Mental Health Policy. The symposium included leaders from across the country focusing on the three main topics: (1) Managing Population Health & Building Cultures of Wellness, (2) The Current State of Integration Efforts and, (3) Behavioral Health’s Role in Population Health.

Her review of the symposium was published in the Connections, AMHCA’s Blog. Other leadership roles she has undertaken include being a local Chapter President and Vice President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (Special Note: She was initiated in the GAMMA TAU Chapter and served as Chapter President). Dr. Smith has been a national and local presenter for Delta. Also, she has been a peer reviewer of proposals for the 29th , 30th, and 32nd National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference as well as the 21st National Conference on Child Abuse & Neglect. Dr. Smith sits on the board of American Association of State Counseling Boards.

Additionally, Dr. Smith has served on the American Counselor Association’s Committee for Research & Knowledge, and as a mentor for emerging professionals. She is a member of the LPCA of Georgia, American Psychological Association (Trauma Division-56), Chi Sigma Iota, International Counseling Association, the International Association of Marriage & Family Counselors (Membership Co-Chair) and the Alabama Counseling Association.

Dr. Beverly has served as a volunteer for the Red Cross since 2009 in the area of Disaster Mental Health and as a Psychological First Aid Instructor. In 2015, she received acceptance for the inaugural Georgia Autism Assessment Program, which was a collaboration between the Emory Autism Center, Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Emory School of Medicine, and the Georgia Psychological Association’s Council on Child, Family, and Assessment. Furthermore, Dr. Smith has served on the Chaplaincy Team with Emory Hospital-Saint Joseph. Due to her Behavioral Healthcare expertise, Smith was invited in 2019 to serve on the launch team for the North & South Georgia Conferences (Commission of Higher Education) to integrate the topics of Mental Healthcare (“They Are Not Immune”) into the conversation of individuals across the life span, families, and youths/young adults (high schoolers, college students, and recent graduates).

In 2020, Dr. Smith was selected as the training leader for the United Methodist Women of North Georgia on topics related to living in an anxious world, managing anxiety, and managing emotions as it relates to diversity and advocacy for change during COVID 19. She was the Spiritual Growth Coordinator for the entire North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Women (the conference consisted of approximately 12 districts, 800 clergy, 360,000 persons). Smith was the Church Council Chair for St. James UMC in Alpharetta which grew to approximately 2,000 members. Dr. Smith was the first African American Council Chair for the Atlanta Roswell District Council on Ministry. She was the first African American and youngest administrator to receive the Excellence in Leadership Award for Laypersons in the Atlanta Roswell District. The Intergenerational Women's African Dance & Drum Ensemble or IWADDE (pron: Eee-Wah-Deh) is a space for women of African heritage to explore their roots. Senakhu Donald formed IWADDE in the summer of 2017. Donald noticed a lack of African dance groups in Colorado, and knew she was the right person to do something about it.

The IWADDE sisterhood’s ages range from 5 through 80 years old. For nearly five years, the Denver-based ensemble has performed at various events throughout Colorado, leaving audiences inspired and grateful.

“We have to carry on this tradition,” she said. “I want it to be really communal and really, just fun!” Senakhu Donald Dancers of all experience levels and ages are welcome to join. IWADDE's goal is to be creative, have fun, express harmonious dance and/or drum self, explore different styles (Nigerian, West African, Orisa, Haitian, Afro-Brazilian, others...), connect with their African ancestry and each other and to share lots of laughter.

Honorary Members Soror Webb is the Former First Lady of the city of Denver and Former Colorado State Representative. She is the first minority woman of the Colorado Joint Budget Committee. She is best known for sponsoring legislation that adopted Dr. Martin L. King Jr’s birthday as a Colorado state holiday prior to it becoming a national holiday.

Soror Howard is a retired United States Navy four-star admiral who last served as the commander of United States Naval Forces Europe while she concurrently was the commander of United States Naval Forces Africa and commander of Allied Joint Force Command Naples. She previously was the 38th Vice Chief of Naval Operations. She assumed her last assignment on June 7, 2016. Howard has achieved many historical firsts throughout her naval career. She was the first African-American woman to command a United States Navy ship, and the first to achieve two- and three-star rank. In 2006, she was selected for the rank of rear admiral (lower half), making her the first admiral selected from the United States Naval Academy class of 1982 and the first female graduate of the United States Naval Academy selected for flag rank. Upon her swearing in, Howard became the highest-ranking woman in United States Naval history.

Fresh broccoli florets Halved seedless red grapes Chopped celery Chopped green onions Sliced water chestnuts Raisins Fat-free plain yogurt Reduced fat mayonnaise Honey

In a large bowl, combine the broccoli, grapes, celery, onions, water chestnuts and raisins.

Non-fat milk Olive Oil Thyme Garlic powder Onion powder Paprika Black Pepper Red Pepper Salt Whole Wheat Flour parsley

1. Place the chicken pieces in milk. Preheat oven to 400 degrees 2. In a large bowl, combine all remaining ingredients. Dip each chicken piece in flour mixture making sure each piece is well coated. Discard remaining flour 3. Place the chicken on shallow baking pan that has been sprayed with non stick spray. Brush the chicken pieces lightly with olive oil. Bake for 45 minutes or until the chicken juices run clear.

Relaxation Tips Belly breathing The first and most simple and direct way to calm anxiety is something we do every day. Breathing. The problem is that when we are anxious, we breathe in a way that can actually make our anxiety worse. Shallow, rapid breathing reduces the amount of oxygen that is getting into our systems and causes us to feel lightheaded and anxious.

Belly breathing is a deeper, slower form of breathing that enables oxygen saturation and tells our bodies and our brains that everything is ok and we are not in danger. When our brain gets that message it stops kicking out stress hormones and slows our heart rate back down, relieving our anxiety.

To practice belly breathing, sit comfortably and put one hand on your stomach and one on your chest. Breathe slowly and deeply so that the hand on your stomach rises, not the one on your chest. It takes practice, so try to find one or two minutes several times a day to belly breathe. If you wait until you are really anxious, you wont have the best results. Practice when you aren’t anxious so that it will work when you need it.

Change your self-talk When we are anxious, we tend to talk to ourselves, or think to ourselves, in very negative ways. These negative messages fuel our anxiety, which increases catastrophic thoughts, and on and on. When our thoughts are telling us that we are headed for disaster, it is only natural that our body would respond with heightened vigilance, rapid heart rate, and tensed muscles. Our bodies are programmed to deal with danger by getting ready to fight or flee.

The simple act of changing our thoughts can change our body’s response to a more calm state. “I’m going to get fired if I’m late!” can be changed to “While it isn’t good to be late, I am not in danger of losing my job.” “Everybody hates me” can be changed to “Sometimes I feel insecure about people liking me, but I am friendly, warm, and likeable.” One message would make anyone feel horrible and frantic, the other is a more reality based message that creates a calm and coping response.

Stay in the Present Anxiety is very often a future-oriented condition. We worry about what might happen — the persistent “what if” that can never be answered in the moment. The sad part though, is that we are sacrificing our moments, one by one, to the unanswerable “what if.”
