EYES are the PRIZE

TUNE INTO YOUR TONE

The colour of your eyes affects your choice of shadows and liners. Brown eyes work best with golden tones, warm browns, deep purples or a pop of bright green or blue. If your irises are green or hazel, go for plum colours, burgundy, violet and rose, while blue eyes pop with warm tones like orange, peach, champagne and baby pink, as well as lavender and any shade of blue.

Also consider your skin tone when picking products for your eyes. Here’s a quick guide to get you started: champagne and bronze tones work well on fair skin; shimmery golds complement olive skin; greens or blues work on darker skin tones; rose-gold works well on very dark skin tones.

Beauty experts are as sure of skin tone/make-up shades that don’t work as they are about those that do. Reds and pinks don’t favour fair skin. For medium skin tones, be wary of brown tones similar to your natural skin tone. Also, stark opposites are a no-go for darker skins, so avoid greys.

EYES LOVE TLC

The state of your brows and lashes will also affect the overall impact of your eyes. Before going wild with make-up techniques, groom your brows by using whichever hairremoval technique you prefer – or leave it to the pros if you’re prone to over-plucking!

A thin layer of virgin coconut oil applied to your brows and lashes is a step in the right direction if you’re hoping for fuller, longer and shinier strands. There are also some good serums and oils available that add nutrients to brows and lashes.

Eye hygiene is important, too. Be sure to thoroughly clean your eye area – lashes, brows, waterline (the rim of your lower eyelid) and lids – with a gentle make-up remover before you go to bed at night. Cleaning your make-up brushes and tools is also non-negotiable; trash any expired products to prevent bacteria build-up and possible eye infections.

EMBRACE AGEING EYES

The stage of life you’re in also plays a role in how your make-up looks. If fi ne lines and crow’s feet have started calling your face home, there are ways to work around them with techniques and age-specific products (step away from the powders and say hello to cream-based products).

It’s worth noting that as we age and our skin loses elasticity, any eye shape may then start to appear hooded. Test out make-up techniques for this eye shape if you notice saggier eyelids – you might just be surprised at the results.

The right skincare routine can make all the difference in maintaining or achieving a more youthful appearance. Apply an eyecare cream or serum for a healthy dose of hydration. Look for products that contain vitamin C, retinol, peptides and the all-round hero: hyaluronic acid. And – need we even mention this? – apply a good SPF every single day. Don’t wait until you spot your fi rst wrinkle; start today.

Dressing for your body type is an art. These styling tips will have you looking fabulous, no matter your shape

Fashion should be fun, not frustrating. In a world fi lled with fashion fi nds, it can be tricky to navigate through the many styles and fi nd ones that suit you perfectly. But it’s worth the effort, because fi nding pieces that fl atter and accentuate your body makes all the difference.

Though ideas around dressing for your body shape may seem restrictive, ultimately you get to decide what looks and feels good on you. Use these as guidelines to help you crack the code and express yourself.

TRENDY TIP

Wear bright colours on your lower body and avoid excessive fabric around your midsection. Tops with an interesting neckline or V-neck draw attention up.

3Apple CUTIE

An apple shape is typically wider around the middle with a less defined waist, often accompanied by slimmer legs and arms. To balance out your upper body, choose clothes that add curves and fullness to the lower half.

Structured outerwear works wonders to define your waist and create a sleek look.

Must-have items:

– Empire-waist dresses

– A-line skirts

– Straight-leg or flared jeans

– Wrap tops and dresses

– Structured blazers or jackets

4Straight AND CHIC

If your waist, hip, and bust measurements are relatively similar, you have a straight or rectangle-shaped body. Your shoulders and hips are proportionate, with little definition in the waist. Create more curves by choosing styles that add volume to your hips and emphasise your waist.

Must-have items:

– High-waisted pants and skirts

– Peplum tops

– Fit-and-flare dresses

– Patterned blouses

– Cropped jackets

Experiment with prints and patterns to add dimension to your look. Puffed or balloon sleeves add shape to your silhouette, while belts will draw attention to your waist.

DEALING diabetes with

You’ve just heard you have diabetes. What now? Medical experts share their advice, including four key steps to a healthier you

Perhaps you haven’t been feeling well. A routine check-up revealed the diagnosis. It’s been confi rmed: you have Type 2 diabetes. You’ve learned that your body has trouble using insulin and that the sugar in your food can’t be used for energy as easily. Instead, it stays in your blood –a potentially dangerous scenario.

Fortunately, there’s good news, too. You can live a long, happy life by following your treatment plan closely. A doctor and dietician tell us more about the four essential steps to managing Type 2 diabetes.

STEP 1: Healthy eating habits

The fi rst step in managing diabetes is to work closely with your medical team to ensure your diet is correct. “A registered dietician can help you adopt an individualised approach that considers your personal food preferences, any additional health conditions and other factors,” says Irene Labuschagne, a registered dietician from the Division of Human Nutrition at Stellenbosch University.

REGULAR EXERCISE WILL HELP YOUR BODY USE INSULIN BETTER, LOWER YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE, IMPROVE YOUR CHOLESTEROL LEVELS, AND HELP KEEP YOUR WEIGHT IN CHECK

to discuss any side effects or concerns you may have.”

These regular check-ups also allow your healthcare team to monitor your progress and health, adjust medications if necessary, and detect any complications early enough to be able to treat them.

STEP 4: Regular testing of blood sugar levels

Your fourth priority is to check your blood sugar levels as recommended (usually using a pinprick glucose meter) to understand how different foods, activities and medications affect you. You and your healthcare team can then use this information to adjust your insulin doses, meal plan or other aspects of your treatment plan.

A LAST BIT OF ADVICE

It’s essential to keep a few other aspects in mind, starting with stress. Don’t underestimate the effect it has on your health. Make managing your stress levels a priority – whether it’s resolving a short-term personal issue or a long-term one, like a stressful job. Make changes where possible and fi nd healthy ways to manage stress. This could include exercise, reading or a hobby.

Aim to have 7–9 hours of sleep every night, and if you’re a smoker, reduce the number of cigarettes you smoke.

If you’re struggling to make these lifestyle changes, ask friends or family to join you – your diet and exercise regime are also good for people who don’t have diabetes. You could also seek out support networks to get in touch with others with diabetes.
