It really shifts your perspective and your role, and you know that you have got a bigger responsibility, something beyond you

Summer is in full swing! We’re all very excited to welcome the warmth, the beach days, braais, outdoor adventures and sun-soaked gatherings with friends and family. But before you do, there is one essential item that that is a non-negotiable in your skincare routine, and that is sunscreen.

What is SPF and why is it so important?

The term SPF can be found on every bottle of sunscreen, but have you ever wondered what it actually means? SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and it refers to how well the sunscreen can protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UVB rays.

While sunscreens can help prevent sunburn and damage to your skin, it is important to remember that no sunscreen is guaranteed to be 100% effective. Remember to reapply it throughout the day, wear sun-protective clothing like hats, and look for shady spots during peak sunshine hours.

Mineral vs chemical sunscreen

While chemical and mineral sunscreens serve the same purpose – to prevent sun damage –they do so in two very different ways.

Mineral sunscreens – also called sunblock – form a physical barrier on your skin which ‘scatters’ or reflects UV rays away from your skin. Chemical sunscreen absorbs the UV rays into the skin, converts them into heat and releases them from the body.

While mineral sunscreens provide immediate protection as soon as you apply the product and are less likely to irritate sensitive skin, there are a few negatives. They often feel greasy or ‘heavy’ on the skin and tend to leave a white cast on darker skin tones (although this does make it easier to see when you need to reapply more).

Chemical sunscreen is less visible on the skin, no matter the skin tone, there are more options on the shelves and it’s generally less expensive. However, it can cause irritation, requires roughly 20 minutes to become effective and needs to be reapplied very often.

What are the benefits of wearing sunscreen?

– Prevents sunburn Sunscreen is vital in blocking UVB rays, which are the cause of most sunburns.

Lowers the risk of skin cancer

Prolonged exposure to UVB rays can cause your skin cells to replicate at a much higher rate, which can then lead to cancer. A good sunscreen will protect your skin from UV exposure and therefore prevent this damage.

Reduces the appearance of dark patches

Constant exposure to the sun can lead to dark patches on your skin called hyperpigmentation or melasma. By using sunscreen you will prevent these spots from appearing or getting worse.

Find your vacay FIT!

The key to summertime styling success is dressing for the location!

It’s the holidays and time to do what you enjoy: lounge on a beach, explore the wilderness, embark on a thrilling adventure or soak up the culture on a city break. But before all that, you need a fit check to make sure you look good while staying comfy. Here are summer outfit choices for four destinations.

Safari style

If you’re getting up-close and personal with your wild side on a safari vacay, think practicality meets style. Ensembles are all about neutral tones, earthy vibes and natural breathable fabrics that are durable enough to handle the great outdoors.

The basics

Pack a lightweight, long-sleeve shirt in a neutral colour like khaki or olive. Convertible pants that can zip off into shorts when the midday sun hits are a multitasking must-have. Accessorise with a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses and a slingbag. On your feet, you’ll need something with a good grip for those nature walks and game drives, so think sturdy sneakers or hiking boots.

TOP TIP

Pack a jacket for those chilly early-morning safaris. Stick to earthy tones to blend in with the environment.

Beachwear bests

The basics

Sun, sea, sand, slay! For a coastal destination, think breezy fabrics and bright accessories. You want your beach outfi ts to be effortless, so pack light and easy-to-layer pieces that scream summer.

Pick swimsuit styles that make you feel confident and fl atter your fi gure – and a couple of key items you can layer over your swimsuit, such as wrap skirts, button-up shirts and shorts. A wide-brimmed hat is essential for sun protection but also elevates your look. Add oversized sunnies and a beach tote big enough to carry all your essentials. For footwear, espadrilles or a pair of slides that can transition from beach to boardwalk is key.

TOP TIP

Go for lightweight, flowy fabrics that won’t cling to your body when the temperature rises.

THE JOYOF FlyingSolo

Solo dates don’t have to be wild, hair-raising adventures – unless that’s what you’re into! Stretching yourself could simply mean going to a restaurant you’ve always wanted to try and savouring a meal for one, or attending a favourite artist's art exhibition opening. It could also include multiple dates around one experience, such as a course that runs over several weeks or months. Simply ask yourself, “What sounds fun?” – and then book your spot!
