THE NADSM SYMPOSIUM Jason Tierney

NADSM Symposium Director

Welcome to the 2020 North American Dental Sleep Medicine Symposium. We are so grateful that you’ve chosen to learn and grow with us, and we applaud your commitment to your patients, practice, and profession. The road to Dental Sleep Medicine success is rife with more hurdles than an Olympic track meet. Fortunately, the 2020 NADSM Symposium features a roster of experts that will share their knowledge and experience to help you overcome these hurdles. Attend their presentations. Ask questions. Talk with them afterward. Dialogue and discourse are key to understanding. The dozens of NADSM Symposium Sponsors help make this meeting happen each year. We couldn’t do this without them. These people possess a breadth of knowledge. They live, eat, and sleep sleep. That isn’t a typo. Be sure to spend time with them and leverage their collective experience. They can help you streamline processes, improve results, and achieve your goals. The NADSM was founded with the purpose of providing Dental Sleep Medicine practitioners with an engaging and entertaining platform to learn with their peers and grow together. We aimed to foster kinship, conversation, and progress. We hope to hit that target again this year. Learn with purpose. Ask questions. Share your ideas and glean new insights from others. Together, we can transform dental sleep medicine. Make it happen.

Ryan Holiday Best Selling Author, Austin, TX

Friday @ 11:45 am GRAND BALLROOM

Ryan Holiday’s philosophically-driven bestselling books have not only sold nearly two million copies, but they’ve directly influenced Super Bowl-winning teams like the New England Patriots, World Series champions like the Houston Astros, as well as sitting senators, military leaders and some of the biggest and most important companies in the world like Google, Twitter, and Microsoft. At the core of Ryan’s teachings is Stoicism, a philosophy he has brought back from ancient Rome and into the workplace, entrepreneurship, politics, and sports. The idea is that while we don’t always control what happens to us in life, we always control how we respond. It’s this message, a framework for overcoming obstacles, scaling new challenges and battling both the ups and downs and life, illustrated vividly with stories from the greats (and not-so-greats) of history, that has brought Ryan in front of some of the most influential audiences in the world. He’s been profiled by the New York Times, Sports Illustrated and ESPN, and he counts among his clients and followers, some of the biggest names in business, tech, culture and professional athletics. His book, Conspiracy, is being adapted into a major motion picture. His most recent book, Stillness Is the Key was listed on the New York Times’ and Wall Street Journal’s bestseller lists.

The Obstacle Is the Way Ryan Holiday will share the timeless art of turning trials into opportunities to grow and improve your life and career. He’ll expound on the stories of Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, and many others so you can gain insights into how to convert impediments to progress into the road to goal attainment. Ryan will share some of the tenets from his best-selling book “The Obstacle Is the Way” which has become a staple of many professional sports organizations and led to presentations for the NFL Owners Meeting, Texas Rangers, the Green Berets of the 7th Special Forces Group, the Atlanta Braves, the University of Alabama football team, Google, GE, and a popular TEDx talk.

Jill Ombrello, DDS Dental Sleep Practioner, Dallas, TX

Friday @ 1:45 pm GRAND BALLROOM

Jill Ombrello, DDS is passionate about improving the lives of children and specializes in sleep-disordered breathing and habit correction for children aged 2 - 12. Many parents are surprised to learn that as many as nine out of ten kids struggle with sleepdisordered breathing, which manifests in surprising ways. Often, healthcare professionals misdiagnose symptoms, like trouble focusing or mouth breathing. Through a few simple adjustments, children who might otherwise be put on medication can enjoy a good night’s rest, and they soon find many of their issues resolved. A fourth-generation dentist, Dr. Ombrello deeply appreciates the opportunity to support family health, both locally in Dallas and on a global scale. She is a longtime advocate for Healthy Start, a system designed to improve the wellbeing of children by educating and treating the root causes of certain conditions caused by Sleep Disordered Breathing. Dr. Ombrello lectures internationally and has trained thousands of dentists seeking to adopt her best practices. She has provided care in underserved areas of Texas and Alaska, and also donates her time and dental services to the Genesis Women’s Shelter, where she offers top-tier care for the victims of domestic abuse. Dr. Ombrello is a rabid Beyonce fan.

John Remmers, MD

Saturday @ 9:00 am GRAND BALLROOM

Co-Founder & CMO of Zephyr Sleep Technologies Alberta, Canada As the CMO and co-founder of Zephyr Sleep Technologies, Dr. John Remmers leads the research, design and development of innovative sleep products used in the diagnoses and treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. As a world-renowned expert in the field of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea, Dr. Remmers has published over one hundred peer reviewed articles in the area of respiratory physiology. Dr. Remmers served two terms as the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Applied Physiology and has presented honorary research lectures to the American Thoracic Society, the American Physiological Society, and American College of Chest Physicians. He has developed various technologies and medical devices to treat sleep apnea, ranging from portable diagnostic sleep monitors to auto-adjusting CPAP devices, and remotely controlled/auto-controlled mandibular positioners (i.e. MATRx and MATRx plus) used in the prescription and characterization of oral appliance therapy. Over the past decade, Dr. Remmers has dedicated his research to patient selection for oral appliance therapy and sleep theragnostics.

Oral Appliance Therapy – The Dark Art or the Evidence-based Approach The session will review the current methods of providing oral appliance treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. Traditional methods that rely only on a practitioner’s clinical experience will be compared and contrasted to new methods that rely on sleep theragnostic testing. Such testing identifies favorable candidates and an efficacious protrusive position for the custom-fitted oral appliance. Dental sleep medicine is on the cusp of a major shift to evidence-based practices. Learning Objectives: • Understand the lack of a scientific base for current oral appliance practices. • Appreciate the importance of evidence from sleep theragnostic testing. • Recognize the future role of the dentist in managing obstructive sleep apnea.

Sleep Bruxism: Causes and Management When Associated With Comorbidities Sleep bruxism is an oral activity without problem for most individuals since it is occurring occasionally and in absence of other disorders. When associated with destructive dental behavior, orofacial pain and headache or concomitant to insomnia and/or sleep apnea, management becomes a challenge to dentists. In this presentation, internationally renowned researcher and author, Dr. Gilles Lavigne will define Sleep Bruxism and define dentistry’s role in its management particularly when it coincides with Sleep Disordered Breathing symptoms. Learning Objectives: • Understand mechanisms and causes of Sleep Bruxism. • Develop skills for screening and determining when to request sleep medicine consultation in presence of comorbidities. • Have a rapid overview of ‘personalized management’ when sleep bruxism overlaps with other conditions.

Richard Drake, DDS

Saturday @ 11:30 am GRAND BALLROOM

Dental Sleep Practitioner Co-Founder of DSS & DS3, San Antonio, TX

After doing general dentistry for 13 years, I woke up one morning and as I sauntered toward the morning pitstop, I felt like Dale Earnhardt, Jr. at Talledega; I kept making a left-hand turn. My neck was contorted, in the same position as I had been while doing endo on #15 yesterday. Man, I can’t keep doing this. I know. I think I’ll do dental sleep medicine instead. That might not be exactly how it happened but now all I do is treat airways. My practice in San Antonio, TX helps a bunch of people every day; it is a gratifying work that has many rewards, not the least of which is feeling like I help keep some people alive. Additionally, I partnered with Dr. Gy Yatros, and together, we help to educate many dentists about dental sleep medicine and have created the DS3 Experience, a complete system to help dentists succeed in sleep.

Titration; Too Much? Too Little? Just Right? Now What? Navigating the dental device landscape is a challenge. Of course, you know this already. What position should you take the initial bite? How quickly do you move the patient forward? How do you keep patients from falling through the cracks? What role does VDO play? And then, if all that was not challenging enough, we have to get the patient to do a titration sleep study! Providing optimal Oral Appliance Therapy involves much more than just seating a device and protruding the mandible. During this lecture, we’ll focus on steps you can take to achieve mean disease alleviation in a more predictable fashion. Learning Objectives: • • • • •

Discuss various protocols for titrating dental devices How to determine starting positions and rates of mandibular advancement What is the role of adding vertical; when, why, and how? When and how of titration sleep testing What to do when your device’s results are suboptimal

Dr. Dania Tamimi will review these anatomical structures with a focus on radiography. Learning Objectives: • • • •

Understand the morphologic risk factors associated with Sleep Disordered Breathing Review of gross & radiographic anatomy of the nose and sinuses Know the role of growth and development disturbances on the morphology of these structures Understand how the TMJ and skull base are related to these structures
