hew! We had our EMS practicals last Saturday morning at the Public Safety Building in Lewis — a series of six “stations” that we had to complete to the satisfaction of the examiners. We were pretty nervous. I made some basic mistakes from sheer jitteriness, temporarily missing some obvious stuff I knew perfectly well, and I know I wasn’t alone. But, the good news is we all passed in the end.

The way it worked was the examiners set up the stations in and around the training room, and we students all gathered in a smaller room down the hall where we couldn’t see them.

There were six cards, one for each station. You took a card down to the designated station and did your best, then brought the card back and gave it to a fellow student who hadn’t done that station.

Station One was Patient Assessment — Trauma. This was the big daddy, the one that had us most freaked out. The list of things that have to be covered is long and detailed, but it basically comes down to three parts: ABCs

(Airway, Breathing, Circulation), obtaining vital signs (pulse, respirations, blood pressure), and physically inspecting the patient for problems.

Station Two is Patient Assessment — Medical, which is almost as exhaustive. It covers the same basic territory but for a patient with a medical condition rather than one with physical trauma. Station Three covers CPR and the use of a defibrillator. Station Four covers how to ventilate patients who can’t breathe on their own. Station Five, Spinal Immobilization, has two possibilities, one for a seated patient and one for a supine patient. You draw a card at the station to see which part you get. Station Six has seven possibilities, three for splinting, one for bleeding control, and three for airway and breathing. Here you also draw a card to see which one you get. It took about three hours. Throughout, the examiners were entirely professional, and we were grateful to them and to the volunteer “patients” for their time.

Now for the written test, which will be over by the time this comes out.

think Willsboro is a great place to live and be a part of the community, this past week was very prideful. It was unfortunate that we were without a supervisor for half of this past year, but several stepped up to the plate and offered to run for the office even if it was only for one year. We had a good voter turn out and the voters selected Mr. Edward Hatch to fill that position. Congratulations. The next great event happened at our local school. Mr. Ed Collins visits the school each year to talk to the students about being a veteran and encourages them to stay the course and complete their high school education, which he did not do, and has regretted greatly. So, now in his late ‘80s, he was surprised at his annual visit, as he was awarded his high school diploma with all the honors that go with graduation along with a most appreciative crowd of on lookers. Congratulations, Ed. Then, on Veterans Day, the annual celebration offered to our local Veterans and their guest was an outstanding program and meal. Here again it was a large crowd and they fed the

largest crowd in the six-year history of offering the event. This year the responsibility of the event was shared by all the local churches for the first time. This year two of our oldest veterans Joe Bruno and Ed Collins shared some of their story of when they served, very impressive.

The end of the week was the presentation of the Willsboro Central School Drama Clubs presentation of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.” The student actors did an outstanding job and showed their talents. It was an outstanding performance. It is such a pleasure to watch these students show case their talents and improve with each year’s performance. The drama club offers the student body another opportunity besides sports to raise to the top, job well done.

he news from town this week is that long-serving Town Justice Mark Kupperman has resigned his position. His replacement is unknown at the moment, but the matter should be resolved next week.

This is my last day in Austin for this trip, and I’ve spent my time enjoying some of the lesser-known things about this town.

Though the city is rightly famous for all of its music and clubs, of which there are dozens and dozens, the problem is these places don’t get going until long after I’ve retired for the evening. However, Austin is blessed with a number of beautiful public swimming areas. My favorite is a long natural spring-fed pool with a limestone bottom surrounded by lawns and mature oaks, where the water is 72 degrees all year round.

There are serious lap swimmers, lots of sun worshippers, children playing, and a more than a few refugees from the north who lounge under the overhanging trees congratulating themselves on their good sense to be here rather than shivering at home. There is

even a separate section where dogs and their owners can swim together.

Speaking of which, this place is dog crazy.

There are off-leash dog parks all over town and in the surrounding hills. My daughter and I take her sweet mutt Brewster to a large park on the river in the center of the city, where he cavorts and swims with his peers, and I chat up the owners. Nearly every one I encounter is friendly and talkative. I’ve met veterans just home from Afghanistan, British expatriots, penthouse-dwelling style mavens, and lots of tourists like me who enjoy hanging out.

Not all of Austin’s less famous features are worthwhile. A breakfast favorite here is deep-fried chicken served over a waffle, with maple syrup and butter. I was hoping there would be a harmonic flowering of flavors, but it was merely two separate tastes that had no relation to one another. Although not regarded as standard breakfast fare, the Vietnamese-style tacos with strong coffee we had the other morning were delghtful, not too filling, and dirt cheap.

have found at times that visiting the local animal shelter in search of a new family member can be a bit… overwhelming.

Prior to visiting the shelter, a family discussion is a must. If you have children under the age of seven in your household, a puppy under 5 months old and/or “toy sized” is not the best choice. A nervous puppy may nip with its sharp milk teeth or scratch without understanding the impact of its behavior. Smaller dogs are more fragile and easily broken by overeager children.

aperwhites (Narcissus tazetta) are popular indoor plants for winter.

Unlike other narcissus which are also known as daffodils, paperwhites don’t require a chilling period, so forcing them is as easy as putting the bulbs in water and waiting. The fragrant flowers bloom within about two to three weeks of planting, for almost instant gratification.

A problem with paperwhites, as with many bulbs planted in pots, is they grow quite tall and all of their weight is at the top. Researchers in the Flowerbulb Research Program at Cornell University have come up with an unusual solution to this top heavy problem: alcohol.

When paperwhite bulbs are grown in a dilute solution of alcohol, the plants reach a height of 1/3 to 1/2 their normally expected growth — but the flowers remain normal size and last just as long.

To stunt your paperwhites with alcohol, simply pot your paperwhites as you normally would in stones and water. Once the roots begin growing and the green shoot on top reaches about 1-2 inches in height, pour off the existing water. Then replace the water with a solution of 5 percent alcohol. Continue to use the alcohol solution for all future waterings.

When making an alcohol solution, use any

hard liquor such as vodka. Rubbing alcohol can also be used.

Beer and wine have too much sugar and should be avoided.

After selecting your alcohol, determine the percent of alcohol.

Most liquors are labeled as proof. To get the percentage simply divide the proof in half. A 86 proof bourbon, for example, would be 43 percent alcohol.

To get the alcohol content down to 5 percent, just divide the percentage of alcohol by 5 and then subtract 1. That will tell you how many parts water to mix with your 1 part alcohol. For example, a 40 percent alcohol divided by 5 is 8. Subtract one and your get 7. So, for every seven tablespoons of water your need to have one tablespoon of alcohol to get a solution of 5 percent.

Whatever you do, if you try this growing method, make sure your solution is no more than 10 percent alcohol. If it is greater than 10 percent, your plants will overdose and severe growth problems will occur. Also, make sure pets and young children cannot get into the solution! Then enjoy your shorter and sturdier paperwhites!

Classic silent comedy with pianist Ben Model

WILLSBORO — One of the greatest of all silent comedies will be brought to life by Ben Model’s spectacular piano accompaniment.

Harold Lloyd’s “Safety Last” features one of the most famous scenes in the history of film.

As he did for last year ’s popular showing of Buster Keaton’s “The General,” Model will also introduce the film and answer audience questions afterwards. The movie will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at

More than 80 veterans and their guests attended the 6th annual Veterans Day Appreciation Program and Dinner sponsored by all the churches of Willsboro and Reber. Capt. John Neagley of the U.S. Navy was one of the speakers. He is program manager of PMS EOD/Crew which is the Explosive Ordnance Disposal of Counter Radio Controlled Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Electronic Warfare which means he is responsible for developing systems that protect our Soldiers, Sailors and Marines from improvised explosive devices in Iraq and Afghanistan. John is stationed in Washington D.C., but has a home in Willsboro. Two Willsboro WWII veterans, Joe Bruno and Ed Collins, were interviewed by Ron Bruno and Charles Lustig about their WWII experiences. Richard Morgan sang "God Bless America" with Dot Hoke as the organist. This program was honored to have in attendance Evelyn Gay, a Gold Star Mother who lost her son, Charles Elbert Gay, during the Vietnam War. Lake Champlain Transportation president Trey Pecor and operations manager Heather Stewart were invited, but did not participate.

Sayward explained LCT is a private business and said they can conduct business as they see fit.

The purpose of the public meeting was to listen, gather information and make suggestions that may not be apparent to LCT. One goal was to figure out who “must” use the ferry versus those that “want” to use the service. The testimony would be compiled and presented to the company in hopes of persuading them to stay open yearround, Sayward said.

Stewart previously stated the ferry would continue to run as long as ice conditions permit. In a recent interview, she said only 150 cars per day used the Essex-Charlotte run.

Numerous people talked of employment issues if the ferry closed. Residents of Vermont and New York commute daily to the other state for their jobs.

Robin Gucker, Keeseville, said closing the ferry changes her children’s daily commute to the Lake Champlain Waldorf School in Charlotte from 17 miles to 70 and adds two hours each way to their travels. Afterschool activities and sports are not possible because of the transportation time, she said. Gucker said the school year commuting costs on the ferry were about $3,000 annually, a fee she was glad to pay for the service.

Burlington, Vt. resident Scott McIntyre said his job depends on ferry service and said LCT is a monopoly that should have some government regulation even though it is a private company.

“If the ferry closes, I can’t do my job,” he said.

Many people brought up access to the Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington. Some ferry users said those undergoing radiation and chemotherapy can’t endure the car ride around the lake after treatment, and others pointed to a local teen in need of dialysis who is able to stay in school because of the ferry run.

All medical transfers to Fletcher Allen from the New York side of the lake are done by ambulance, meeting attendees said, making ferry service imperative in the event of an emergency. The nearest Life Flight service is the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Hanover, N.H. Like others, Mary-Nell Bockman, of Essex, said she and her husband moved to Essex because of the ferry. Access to jobs in Vermont via the ferry helped them make life choices. When marketing a business, Bockman said, taking care of repeat customers is mission-critical.

Having the ferry available increases traffic, which builds dependency, which increases ferry usage. Closing the ferry will have a negative effect on area businesses, real estate prices and quality of lives, said Essex resident Susan BacotDavis.

Boisen said Ray Pecor agreed to meet with her and a few other representatives to discuss possibilities for the ferry.

Sayward and Lanpher said they would look into how a private business involved in public transportation might be effected by regulation.

“The long-term success of the community depends upon the ferry,” said Buchanan. “This is our ‘bridge.’ We need it.”

Mineville VFW planning Christmas Gala

InBrief Thanksgiving dinner at KCS KEENE — The traditional Thanksgiving dinner at Keene Central School will be held this year in the gymnasium Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 10 a.m. and school officials are inviting the entire community to join them for the meal.

Jay budget up slightly JAY — Jay taxpayers will see a slight increase in their town tax in 2011, as the amount to be raised by taxes will rise 1.7 percent. Total appropriations are up 1.3 percent over the 2010 spending plan.

The 2011 budget includes three water districts, the Au Sable Forks sewer district, the Au Sable Forks ambulance (in which serves the entire town and the town has a contract with), three fire districts, the general fund, and the highway fund.

Property tax values have increased $3,674,760 from 2010 ($247,919,023.00) to 2011 ($251,592,783.00).

The tax rate in the general fund will rise to $2.46 per thousand in 2011, compared to $2.43 per thousand in 2010. The highway tax rate will rise from $3.13 per thousand in 2010 to $3.14 per thousand in 2011.

The tax rate for each individual tax payer will vary depending on which water, sewer, or fire district they reside in.

The 2011 budget offers no salary increases for any town of Jay elected or appointed officials or employees and all part -time employee hours will remain the same as in 2010.

Jay Supervisor Randy Douglas said, “During these difficult financial times, I proposed that the town of Jay abstain from any wage increases for 2011 and the town of Jay Board unanimously agreed. Although I struggled with this decision, it was the fiscally responsible thing to do.”

said. “Their dedication goes beyond their scheduled working hours. Some of our highway employees take it upon themselves to swing by our highway garage off the clock to put down trees within our right-a-way in our wood boiler. Our employees understand the savings this wood boiler provides their department, and go above and beyond to support their DPW/HWY Director Chris Garrow and his dedication to look out for the best interest of his constituents.”

Douglas further stated, “Overall, the budget increased from $2,603,315 in 2010 to $2,635,665 in 2011; an increase of $32,350. Overall this is not too bad when the town of Jay’s increase to the NYS Retirement System increased $32,629 up from $70,827 in 2010 to $103,456 in 2011.”

“The total two year increase from 2009 to the town is $66,675.00. In 2009, Jay’s NYS retirement share cost was $40,505.00,” he said.

Budget Officer Susan Richards said, “As in every budget year, our job is to look at each line item in our appropriations and revenues and determine whether or not we are operating in a fiscally responsible manner and still managing to meet the needs of our constituents.

With the rise of New York State mandates, we are forced to increase appropriations and make adjustments in other areas of the overall budget in order to keep taxes reasonable. This is a very difficult task.”

The town of Jay is also increasing their rental income to help offset the community center building costs.

Health insurance cost rose 10 percent from $171,442.68 to $191,754.48; an increase of $20,311.80. In 2007, the town implemented an annual employee/retire contribution rate based on an employee’s date of hire. The employee/retiree contribution percentages range from 10 to 50 percent of the total cost for health insurance. This cost saving measure helped the town offset financial health care crisis our nation is faced with.

Research farm harvests crop of possibilities

By Matt Bosley matt@denpubs.com WILLSBORO — Farms across the North Country and beyond are benefiting from venturesome agricultural experiments being conducted in Willsboro.

Cornell University’s E.V. Baker Research Farm, located on Farrell Road, has recently been credited with some significant breakthroughs in agricultural science that will help farmers and the communities where they operate.

The farm is named for its prior owner, who donated the large property to Cornell University in 1980. Farm manager Michael Davis has overseen a wide variety of applied agricultural research there for the past 14 years.

“What we try to do is push the envelope and show what is practical and what isn’t,” he said.

Most recently, the farm has provided a major boost to a sprouting North Country wine industry through its cold-hardy grape trial.

The experiment was initiated in 2005 as a collaboration between Cornell Cooperative Extension, experts from Cornell University and a handful of enthusiastic Champlain Valley grape growers. It featured 300 vines representing 25 different wine grape varieties; 12 red and 13 white.

“Some of them are experimental and not yet commercially available,” said Davis, “but some of them are pretty widely used, and we just wanted to see how they would do in a tough North Country Climate.”

Not only did every one of the plants survive, but they produced fruit beyond everyone’s expectations.

“What they were able to get for yields off of this is incredibly high,” said Davis, noting how the trial produced, on average, three to four times as many marketable grapes per acre as the average vineyard. “They’re bountiful, but they’re also very high quality.”

Winemaker Richard Lamoy, who operates Hid-In-Pines vineyard in Morrisonville and has played a major role in managing the Willsboro trial, won medals for six different wines he submitted last fall to a winemaking competition in Manchester, Vt. Five of the

six were crafted with grapes harvested from the Baker Research Farm.

While the grape-growing conditions at Baker Research Farm are some of the most ideal in the North Country, said Davis, the success of the trial thus far has been very encouraging for those who would like to make winemaking more prevalent in the Champlain Valley.

“I think anything we can do to diversify agriculture around here is a plus,” said Davis, adding the addition of wineries could encourage tourism in the region.

The cold-hardy grape trial may have significant implications locally, but other research conducted at the Baker Farm may have a more far-reaching impact.

Researchers at Cornell University used 18 years worth of data collected at the Willsboro site to develop Adapt-N, a software tool designed to help farmers better manage nitrogen levels in their soils.

For the next few weeks, residents of Port Henry, Westport and Elizabethtown will start to see little blue markers on storm drains around their towns.

Students in the area have been learning about storm water pollution and how it affects their local water systems like Lake Champlain and the Boquet River. The Westport Central School environmental science class is installing storm-drain markers.

During a storm event storm water runs down driveways, lawns, sidewalks and parking lots. It collects many pollutants along the way including dirt, chemicals and other debris. This water then

flows to storm sewer systems and goes directly into lakes, rivers and streams. Polluted runoff is one of the nation’s greatest threats to clean water.

Students have been learning about what each of their households can do to help keep storm water clean. These markers are a reminder to the community that if we all take responsibility to practice good household habits we can keep our water ways healthy.

The storm drain markers were bought through a grant from The Lake Champlain Basin Program that was received by the Lake George Regional Planning Board.

According to Davis, the observations have allowed scientists to better predict nitrogen loss depending on how fields are tilled, what type of fertilizer is used, and when it is applied in relation to precipitation.

That knowledge, which is built into the new Adapt-N software, will allow farmers to use fertilizer more efficiently, Davis said.

TL chamber kicks off holiday shopping Nov. 27 with new event TUPPER LAKE — The Tupper Lake Chamber of Commerce will kick off the holiday shopping season on Saturday, Nov. 27, with an all-day celebration that will include a free movie at the State Theater, a visit from Santa Claus and a tree-lighting ceremony at the new Chad Martin Memorial Park.

Spending flat in North Elba’s 2011 budget

By Chris Morris denpubs@denpubs.com LAKE PLACID — Town of North Elba residents living within the village of Saranac Lake will see their taxes go down slightly in 2011, while those living within the boundaries of the village of Lake Placid will see a small increase.

North Elba Supervisor Roby Politi said the proposed town budget for 2011 keeps spending flat.

Officials project approximately $6.9 million in appropriations next year, about the same as the current year ’s budget, while budget revenues not including the tax levy are projected at about $2.7 million.

That represents an approximate 13 percent increase over the current year. Politi said appropriations in 2011 include revenue borrowing not included in the current year ’s

budget.

The amount raised by taxes in next year ’s budget is set at about $3.8 million. That’s a few thousand dollars less than this year ’s tax levy.

Property taxes account for 55 percent of budgeted appropriations. Six percent of appropriations will be financed via fund balance, while 39 percent comes from revenue sources relating to user fees, contracted services, and local, state and federal funding.

The projected tax rate for residents inside the village of Saranac Lake will decrease by 3.7 percent next year. Residents in the village of Lake Placid will see a tax rate increase of about 2.4 percent, and those living outside village limits will see increases ranging from 0.5 to 2.7 percent.

Politi noted while the overall tax levy has decreased, the levy for the Park District and Fire District 2 has increased slightly.

“The increase in the Park District levy is a result of the state’s discontinuance of state aid as well as increased costs related to employee health insurance and retirement,” he wrote in his budget summary.

The increase for Fire District 2 relates to funding for the newly incorporated Saranac Lake Volunteer Rescue Squad.

North Elba is planning several capital improvement projects at the Lake Placid Airport next year. Those projects, Politi says, will be funded with state and federal grants and are estimated to cost some $3 million.

“There is no tax consequence related to these upgrades and renovations,” he noted.

Politi said spending isn’t a problem for North Elba — but decreasing revenue streams do present issues for taxpayers.

“There’s only a slight increase in this budget; there’s a decrease for Saranac Lake and a slight increase for Lake Placid,” he said. “Our problems don’t necessarily deal

with expenditures, but with decreasing revenue streams.”

He added no one showed up to comment at a public hearing this week. Politi expects public outcry will more likely be directed at county tax increases.

“I caution everybody,” he said. “Look, even though there are only very, very slight increases here in North Elba, you have to remember that your tax bill is made up of both town and county. In my opinion, you’re looking a 20 to 30 percent hike on the county side, so even though town of North Elba tax rates won’t see much of a change, you’re probably going to be hit with a substantial change on the county level.”

Politi noted residents of both villages will no longer pay double on highway taxes.

Other budget highlights include a 9.5 percent increase in health insurance premiums for the town, as well as $88,100 budgeted for community service contracts in Saranac Lake and Lake Placid.

North Country Community College staff may get contracts after all

By Jon Alexander denpubs@denpubs.com A contract between North Country Community College and its clerical staff may have new life as Essex County supervisors agreed to reconsider the measure after killing it in September.

But since the contract is unchanged it still could have a tough time passing the boards of both Franklin and Essex counties.

The proposed contract with the Civil Service Employees Association – featuring a retroactive $1,000 raise in 2010 and 3 percent raises in 2011 and 2012 – passed the Essex County board’s Finance Committee Monday 5-1 with only its chairman Tom Scozzafava dissenting.

But County Chairman Randy Douglas said he remains opposed to the deal that is identical to the one previously torpedoed.

“I can’t support it. I did a zero percent in my own town for my own office staff. My heart goes out to them because I know they are the lowest paid at the college and I wholeheartedly support the college,” he said. “To be fiscally responsible I feel that zero percent is where we should be with everybody. I’m even going to right a letter today to our own union because we are considering possible layoffs.”

Supervisors have been seeking a pay freeze among county union employees. But the unions aren’t willing to return to the table with a full year left on the current agreement.

Retroactive through 2010, the three-year college employee contract still must survive the Essex County Ways and Means Committee and the full board. It must also be approved by the Franklin County Legislature.

The contract calls for new hires to contribute eight percent toward their health insurance premiums for the first time. It would allow existing employees to continue contributing nothing toward their coverage.

And for both Douglas and Scozzafava, that’s not enough.

“You’re only going to pay eight percent for new employees and the rest are only going to pay zero,” he said. “State employees; they contribute to their health insurance. They day of zero percent contributions are gone, it’s over. Since I’ve become the supervisor of Jay, the cost of health insurance has increased 66 percent.”

If approved, the contract would cost the college $24,000 next year and wouldn’t result in any additional cost to the county in 2011.

County Manager Dan Palmer said the contract was the best officials could hope for and an improvement over the most recent deal that has remained in effect because of the impasse.

Essex County’s move to reconsider the college contract could place the heat on Franklin County legislators.

In September, Franklin County legislators tabled the contract and waited for the Essex County decision.

Tim Burpoe represents Saranac Lake and the town of Franklin on the Franklin County Board of Legislators.

“The legislature was unhappy with it back when it was first offered. Particularly when we are battling with every nickel and dime in our budget,” he said. “Some of the legislators argued that we shouldn’t be giving a 3.2 percent increase.”

Burpoe did note that there are several new members of the Franklin County board and the dynamic could change. But he wasn’t overly optimistic.

Several recent controversial decisions involving the college have been initially acted on by Essex County, rendering Franklin County’s subsequent actions essentially meaningless.

Obituaries Irwin ‘Duffer’ Borden Dec. 6, 1945 - Nov. 8, 2010 WESTPORT — Irwin “Duffer” Borden, 64, died Monday November 8th 2010 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington Vt. He was born December 6 1945 in Elizabethtown NY the son of Alex and Vivian (Degroff) Borden.

Duffer was a member of the Westport Fish and Game League, the Essex County Fish and Game, and a past member of the Westport Fire Department. He was a employee of the Town of Westport and worked at the fair for many years. He enjoyed racing and often went to Devils Bowl. He also enjoyed evening rides with his wife Bertha to look for his deer, always stopping to watch if a train were to pass, and each ride ending with his nightly trip through the fair grounds. He was an avid outdoors man enjoying, camping, hunting, and fishing. He also enjoyed his large collection of model carnival rides and fair memorabilia, trips to Saratoga, horse racing, and spending time with his grandchildren, but most of all was his love of the fair. Duffer and Bertha were honored with the 2010 Essex County Fair being dedicated to them.

He is survived by his wife Bertha (Hopkins) Borden of Westport, two sons and daughters in law, Irwin and Shelia Borden of Westport, Brian and Louis Borden of Elizabethtown, two daughters Theresa A. Borden of Westport, Laura L. Dr. Harmon T. LaMar April 27, 1920 - Nov. 8, 2010 PORT KENT — Dr. Harmon T. LaMar, 90, of Lake Street, Port Kent died Monday, Nov. 8, 2010, at his home with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Dannemora, April 27, 1920, the son of Thomas R. and Ruth E. (Buck) LaMar. He grew up and graduated from Dannemora High School. He continued at Houghton College in New York state and McGill University in Montreal.

Dr. LaMar served as a captain in the U.S. Army, traveling far and wide overseas during World War II. He earned two battle stars: one for the Battle of France and the other for the Battle of the Bulge in Germany, for single-handedly capturing six German soldiers. After returning home from World War II, he bought out Dr. Robarge, practicing in Keeseville for 64 years. Dr. LaMar had a unique distinction of being both a happy dentist and making the children and adults happy to be there. His optimism was catching. He cared for several generations of patients' families during his many years of practice, bringing joy to everyone he met.

Dr. LaMar served as president of the Fourth District Dental Society of New York State and was on the Dental Council for the Aged and Head Start. He also served at the state level in the Boy Scouts of America Adirondack Council. He was an active member in the United Methodist church and community of Keeseville. Dr. LaMar was a Mason and a Kiwanian. Two of his many hobbies were boating and photography.

As a devoted family man, he is survived by his four children, Dr. Thomas LaMar and spouse, Kerry of Keeseville, Cheri and companion, Buck Gorham of Chateaugay, James LaMar and spouse, Margaret of Peru, and Kristi LaMar of Port Kent; grandchildren, Kenzie, Brendon, Nicholas, Kevin; Holli, Heather; Elizabeth, James; Heidi, Hilari and Kristopher; great-grandchildren, Morgan, Logan; Ashley, Courtney; Harmoni Jane, Alek; Mylz and Lily Ann; with another great-grandchild, Jeweli Kristi, due in January.

He was predeceased by his parents; wife, Jane A. LaMar; and one son, Christopher LaMar. Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 124 Clinton St., Keeseville. A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday at the Keeseville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Edie A. Poland, pastor, officiating. Committal prayers, military honors and burial will follow in the Port Kent Cemetery.

Dine out for United Way in planning stage

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The United Way of the Adirondack Region is reaching out to the restaurant community, and they’re hoping they’ll step up to the plate.

The nonprofit organization is in the process of planning “Dine Out for United Way,” a first-time event to benefit the more than 35 organizations United Way provides funding for in Clinton, Essex and Franklin counties.

Kirk A. Stallsmith, chairman of the local United Way’s 2010-11 fundraising campaign, is co-chairing the event with Ground

Round manager Bob Kidwell, also a member of the fundraising campaign team. The idea behind the event was to broaden the participation in giving to the United Way and increasing community involvement.

“The thought was to develop an event that can reach across all three counties and involve a segment of the market that could get excited about participating in the annual United Way campaign efforts,” said Stallsmith. Dine Out for United Way — which will be held across the tri-county region Thursday, Jan. 13, 2011 — encourages people to go out to eat at participating businesses during designated times that day, with as much as 10 percent of the total gross sales at

Bob Lavergne catches up to ol’ ‘split ear’

ob Lavergne’s crew had seen the buck the day before and knew it carried some significant bone, but none had considered it was the buck of local legend known as “split ear.”

Deer often wander into town to yard during the long winter months in Indian Lake, and folks here had seen the deer return year after year.

In fact, a local taxidermist had recovered a matching set of sheds from the buck and mounted them on another cape — the impressive non-typical rack scored close to 190.

But Lavergne was hunting in a stretch of property by the Cedar River, miles from town. No one in the crew expected the big non-typical to make an appearance.

That, however, was about to change.

It was the morning of Saturday, Nov. 6, and Lavergne decided to split from the crew who were making drives and still hunt his way along the side of a ridge where the crew had seen the deer the day before.

Minutes later he caught movement along the ridge and pulled his 30-06 to his shoulder.

“I wasn’t really concentrating on the rack, I knew it had good antler, but I was more worried about making an accurate shot,” Lavergne said.

When he pulled the trigger, the deer “dropped from the scope,” he said.

Upon approaching the deer, Lavergne said he was amazed at the sheer mass and tines — 21 in all. Then, he noticed the identifiable split in the deer ’s ear, and knew he had shot the big non-typical so many had pursued in the past.

Sightings around town put the deer at more than 10 years old — an extreme age for a whitetail in the Adirondacks. The buck weighed just 178 pounds, making the rack, which stands a full 20-inches off the deer ’s skull, look out of character with the body.

Lavergne, 44, is having the buck mounted and will have it scored once the drying period passes.

Richard Johndrow, measurer chairman of the New York State Big Buck Club, studied photographs of the deer and estimated its net score in the 160 range.

Johndrow said the largest non-typical ever taken in New Yorks was the Homer Boylan rack taken in 1939 and it scored just

over 244. The second largest was taken in St. Lawrence County by Ken Locy which net scored just over 225. There are 38 non-typical racks, he said, netting over 190 in the state. The 38th largest was taken by Frank Dagles in Bolton Landing in 1961 — a 15-pointer netting just over 190.

Nevertheless, Johndrow lauded Lavergne for taking such a massive trophy in the northern Adirondacks.

“It’s truly a dream of a lifetime to see a big racked buck that you can get a crack at,” he said.

Pennsylvania game warden killed Anyone who believes enforcing the law among men carrying high powered rifles is easy or lacks danger should take heed of the news regarding a Pennsylvania game warden who was gunned down David Grove in the line of duty by a poacher last week.

Wildlife officer David Grove, 31, was killed in what state police called “a ferocious exchange of gunfire” after pulling over Christopher Lynn Johnson, 27, at approximately 10:30 p.m. Nov. 11. Police said Grove was conducting a routine poaching investigation in an area just south of the Gettysburg Battlefield when he witnessed Johnson, and a passenger, Ryan Laumann, using a spotlight to poach deer.

According to police reports, Grove pulled over Johnson’s pickup truck, called for backup and called in Johnson’s license plate before ordering both men from the vehicle. Grove partially handcuffed Johnson, but as he was trying to secure his free hand, a gunfight between the two took place in which Johnson allegedly shot Grove four times with a .45-caliber handgun.

One shot was a fatal head wound.

During the exchange, Grove did return fire and wounded Johnson in the hip. Johnson was later taken into custody at a near-

At a Nov. 12 news conference, Commissioner of Pennsylvania State Police Col. Frank Polowski described the shooting as “a ferocious exchange of gunfire.” Reporters at the shooting scene noted what looked like “multiple bullet holes in the door, mirror and running board of Grove’s truck.”

The District Attorney in Adams County where Johnson is being prosecuted has said he will seek the death penalty in the case, which is allowed under Pennsylvania law for anyone who intentionally kills an officer in the line of duty.

Johnson does have a criminal record. In

2002, he had a felony conviction for burglary in Adams County, Pa., and also pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child. His felony conviction prohibited him from legally possessing a firearm.

While such fatalities among game protectors are rare, the case reinforces the dangers these men and women face every day, often going into hostile environments many miles off the road with very little backup.

The next great war

L

ast week, I had the opportunity to attend a pair of local events focused on climate change. In Tupper Lake, The Wild Center hosted the second annual, Youth Climate Summit, an event that drew students from a wide range of high schools and colleges from across the Adirondacks and New York state to tackle the issue of climate change.

On Friday, I joined an interesting consortium of concerned individuals at the Whiteface Mountain Ski Area for Wintergreen: A conversation about the future of winter recreation, sports and culture in the Adirondacks.

A highlight at both events was the participation of a delegation visiting from Finland. The Finns, similar to Adirondackers, are a culture that comes from a land of ice and snow.

As such, the Finns are experiencing many of the same issues that we must confront, including the economics of retaining their winter pleasures.

Ted Blazer, CEO of the Olympic Regional Development Authority in Lake Placid, detailed the energy costs involved in making snow for the ski centers and for keeping ice on the refrigerated bobsled track, which has become essentially a “track in a tube”, shielded from the sun.

The Finns have developed a similar “winter respite” so that the country’s population will be able to enjoy Nordic skiing, even when Mother Nature can no longer cooperate.

Mikko Myllykoski, a director at The Finnish Science Center at Heureka, captured the audience with a presentation about the resort of Vuokatti, home to the longest ski-tunnel in Europe, which operates throughout the year. Thousands of skiers use its 1,210-meter route for training and pleasure.

Although there remain a fair number of global warming skeptics out there, any doubters are welcome to visit me in hunting camp, where t-shirts and cotton pants have replaced the long johns and Malone woolies of the past. It appears Adirondack hunters will experience another complete deer season, without a decent week of tracking snow.

The decade of 1998-2007 was the warmest on record, and according to data the warming trend over the last 50 years is nearly twice that for the last 100 years. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, “warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global

average sea level.”

While there are certainly a number of valid arguments regarding the causes of climate change, there is no denying the fact that global warming is occurring. For those who would claim otherwise, dual memberships with the Flat Earth Society are still available.

The Youth Summit was inspiring, intriguing and innovative. The level of enthusiasm was incredible, especially when considering the issues that the current generation will be facing.

At the gathering, I first spoke with Zac Berger from Lake Placid, who was instrumental in organizing last year’s inaugural event. The enthusiasm and ideas that were generated by the initial event were a concern of his.

He explained, “We want to overcome some of the apathy that we faced in regard to our proposed actions such as composting and school gardens, recycling and energy saving measures.”

“But, I believe the Youth Climate Summit is just the beginning of change and that if we accept the challenge as an opportunity; there is so much more that we can achieve.”

I left the Summit with the knowledge that the next generation is willing to step up to the plate to confront what will likely be the greatest challenge we have ever faced.

My grandparents fought in the Great War (WWI) and my father and Uncles all served in the War to End all Wars (WWII). I came of age during Vietnam and lived through the end of the Cold War. However, the current generation will be the ones that will be sent to battle in the Climate War. It will be a struggle like none that we have ever faced, since the enemy resides comfortably in the luxury of modern day society.

The battle will require simple steps, known by such terms as reusing and recycling, alterative energy and carbon reduction. These battle terms are far removed from such infamous names as Iwo Jima, Midway or Verdun; but they are no less important in the conflict.

As a rule, American society is largely reactive. We have become too comfortable and complacent, as evidenced by the current financial troubles.

Ticonderoga FCU participates in ‘Shred Fest’ TICONDEROGA — Hundreds of Ticonderoga Federal Credit Union members, and others from the community visited TFCU branches Oct. 18-22 to partake in International Credit Union Week festivities.

Events kicked off with Shred Fest — a free paper shredding event, aimed at preventing identity theft.

Throughout the week, TFCU members dropped off dozens of bags containing nonperishable food items to help support three area food pantries. TFCU also contributed a $200 monetary donation to each pantry.

Staff at each of TFCU's three branches served several hundred free lunches at member appreciation barbecues.

“Our hope is that Shred Fest will increase awareness of the need for identity theft prevention,” said TFCU president and CEO Gregory Johnson. “If you lose your good name, it’s a nightmare trying to straighten things out.”

Several participants brought truck loads of confidential documents, while others brought just a bag or a few boxes. Documents were dumped into a recycling bin, which was, in

turn, raised and dumped into the shredding truck. Some opted to watch their documents get shredded on a small television screen on the outside of the truck. In total 5,000 pounds of paper were shredded and recycled. Participants took away informational brochures with tips to avoid identity theft.

If there is any hope of facing down the most looming threat that modern day society has ever faced, it will be in the hands of the next generation. From what I have seen and heard in recent days, it appears to be in good hands.

New Game Reporting Schedule A new NYSDEC regulation, that came into effect on Wednesday, Nov. 17, will extend the game harvest reporting deadline from 48 hours to 7 days.

The new regs will allow successful deer, bear or turkey hunters up to a week to report their harvest to the DEC. Hunters can file the reports through the agency’s online reporting system or by calling 1-866-GAME-RPT (1-866426-3778).

It is expected that the change will give hunters more flexibility for hunters in reporting their take. Harvest reports provide the important information that wildlife biologists need to gauge the populations of many game species. By helping the mangers, hunters are helping themselves.
