Ti rejects highway proposition By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — Ticonderoga voters have overwhelmingly rejected a proposition to eliminate the town’s elected highway superintendent in favor of an appointed position. The idea, proposed and supported by the town board, was defeated by a 976-280 margin in vot-
Ti, Moriah battle for state berth Moriah hosted Ticonderoga in the Section VII-X Class D football championship game Nov. 5 at Linney Field in Mineville. The winner advances to the state tournament — and perhaps much more. The teams have met for the section title each of the last five years and the last three years the winner has reached the state championship game in Syracuse. See sports.
ing Nov. 2. “That’s the purpose of a proposition, for the people to make a decision,” Ti Supervisor Deb Malaney said. “They’ve spoken.” Voters also elected their next highway superintendent. Republican Mike Parent, a retired highway department supervisor, won the seat with 1,153 votes. Paul Sharkey, running as an independent, got 110 votes.
Parent will serve the remainder of Arthur “Pat” Morrison’s term that expires Dec. 31, 2011. Morrison resigned his office in May. Richard Quesnel is now acting superintendent. Parent is slated to take office Jan. 1, Malaney said, but the town board can appoint him to the position immediately. Malaney said the board will discuss the matter at its Nov. 11 meeting.

fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — Children in Ticonderoga have a new playground. A project five years in the making, nearly 100 volunteers erected the play area at Ticonderoga Elementary School recently. “I’ve never been so proud of this community,” said John McDonald, Ticonderoga school superintendent. “This was a great community project; everyone came together to build this for our children.” Scott Hearburg, who served on the Ti Parent-Teacher Organization committee that led the project, agreed. “It’s absolutely communityowned,” Hearburg said. “Everyone had a part in it. I moved to Ticonderoga 15 years ago and quickly realized people are our greatest asset. This is a great example.” When plans for a building project at the school called for the demolition of the old playground, the PTO went to work raising funds and making plans. The result is a $137,000 playground — funded by PTO fundraising activities, donations and building project money — that is four times of the size of the old area. Shaped like Fort Ticonderoga, the playground has all new equipment and meets all safety codes. Volunteers prepared the site Oct.
Kenady Amya Pinson and hundreds of other children donned costumes for HalloweenFest in downtown Ticonderoga Oct. 29. Montcalm Street was closed to traffic 3-5 p.m. as ghosts and goblins visited merchants to collect Halloween treats. The event included a costume parade and a party at the Ti American Legion.
