Coffee Camp closing its doors at end of the month Owners look back at nine years in business PLATTSBURGH — When owners Diane and John Brady think back to how long the Coffee Camp has been in business, they’re almost amazed so much time has gone by.

“Nine years. It’s been a long time,” said Diane.

The business will be serving its last cup of joe at the end of the month, closing because of the ever costly price of doing business. Diane, who also works as an attorney, said she’s been thinking about retiring, but hasn’t really been able to because of the expense of keeping the Coffee Camp open.

“It’s never really been able to pay its bills,” she said. “I’ve always put money into the business I should be saving. I just can’t put any more money into it.”

The Bradys took over ownership of the Coffee Camp in 2004 from their son, Austin and his wife, Kat, when they moved out of state.

Their daughter-in-law was the coffee connoisseur, having run a coffee shop in Hoboken, N.J., where she and Austin met, said Diane.

“We had no experience [in the coffee business],” said Diane, laughing. “Just tasting coffee.”

“Everybody knows where the Coffee Camp is, and not all of them are coffee drinkers,” added Diane, remarking about the number of bands that have played the makeshift Margaret Street venue.

The Coffee Camp is even closing out its run by hosting four more shows before it closes its doors. The shop’s last show will be Saturday, Oct. 30, starting at 3 p.m, featuring Early Morning, Crown of Lions, Unrestrained, Lie

When the Coffee Camp pours their last cup the next day, it will be bittersweet, said Diane.

“I’ll miss the people. Seeing them on a regular basis,” she said. “But, we’ll have more time to see our kids and our grandchildren.”

“I’ll probably work as a Santa Claus,” John said, stroking his long beard and laughing.

day know more about coffee than they ever thought they would.

“There are so many different types of beans and ways to roast them,” said Diane.

“I can tell the difference, even in some of the more popular coffees, now, too,” said John. “We’ve learned quite a bit. It’s been very interesting.”

Diane still laughs when she thinks back to one of her first experiences in the coffee business, making a latte for a group of young Canadian women.

“I never put any coffee in it. All I did was steam milk,” she said, laughing. “The women tasted it, just smiled and told me it was really good.”

Diane never forgot to add the coffee after that, she said with a smile.

And just as the business has been known for its high-quality coffee, it’s been known for its assortment of beans to grind and make the coffee — everything from traditional Columbian to Costa Rican to Indian malabar and everything in between.

“One of our most popular blends has been Adirondack Gold, a blend of Costa Rican and Indian malabar,” said Diane.

The selection has even lent itself to people ordering beans directly from the Coffee Camp, said Diane.

“We get coffee from all over the world,” said Diane. “If somebody comes in and orders Kona, I can get them Kona. If they order Jamaican Blue Mountain, I can get that. It’s expensive, but I can get it.”

What’s added to the Coffee Camp in recent years is the number of live performances at the business, said John.

“It got people to know we were here and even a little added revenue,” he said. “I like more of the old rock, but we’ve had some

Providing job-seekers with tools for the trade

The Community Computer and Employment Resource Center officially opened in the Plattsburgh Public Library Oct. 13. Library board members and staff joined elected officials and representatives of the North Country Regional Workforce Investment Board, the organization which the library partnered with in establishing the center, for a ceremonial ribboncutting to mark the occasion.

Janelle Shepard, director of the center, said the center will offer important tools people will need in their search for employment.

“We’ll be hosting workshops for resumé writing, how to use the Internet to job search and even how to turn on a computer,” said Shepard.

The goal of the center is to stimulate employment and connect people with job opportunities in and around the region. The center was established through a $244,517 federal economic stimu-

lus grant received by the Plattsburgh Public Library earlier this year. The library was selected as one of 30 public libraries in upstate New York with higher poverty and unemployment to receive the two-year grant.

The grant, explained Shepard, was used to purchase computers, desks and supplies as well as pro-

vide high-speed Internet service for the center. The location — in a section of the library which formerly housed periodicals and books on tape — made sense because of the volume of traffic seen by the library, said Shepard.

“We spoke to library staff and found there are people coming in here, looking for employment on

computers,” said Shepard. “So, [the center] is very important to have with the high unemployment rate and just another resource we can offer in the community.”

Mary Linda Todd, a library development specialist in the Division of Library Development at the New York State Library, said the center will be critical connector between job-seekers and places of employment. Making that connection will help the North Country’s share of the estimated 800,000 people out of work in New York State alone, according to a report Todd said she had heard on National Public Radio.

“I’m sure that number is low because those are the people that are looking for jobs and those are the people we have statistics for,” said Todd. “I’m sure there’s a lot more people out there who have given up looking for a job.”

“We’ve consistently had people coming in who look for any kind of job information, so this is great,” said Ransom. “I’m always delighted to add services to the li-

John VanNatten, chairman of the North Country Regional Workforce Investment Board, said he was proud to partner with the library in what will be a great opportunity for helping the unemployed.

“This is a great location,” said VanNatten, “and we look forward to helping numerous people from the community get additional skills that will help them get employed.”

The Community Computer and Employment Resource Center will be open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Those hours, however, could eventually be adjusted to meet the needs of the people who use it, said Shepard.

“This is a customer-driven center,” said Shepard, “so, down the road, if we find a flux of people coming in that need it to be open later, we’re going to adjust to that.”

Sex offenders listed on new sheriff’s department Web site

By Jeremiah S. Papineau jeremiah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — The Clinton County Sheriff’s Department has officially launched Offender Watch, an electronic database which contains names and locations of registered sex offenders.

Clinton County Sheriff David N. Favro made the announcement Oct. 13, at the Plattsburgh YMCA, a location chosen for its stature as a community hub likely to benefit from knowledge of the whereabouts of known sex offenders.

The database, which was funded through money collected from inmate pay phone calls at the Clinton County Jail, compiles information the department receives and processes on a regular basis, explained Favro.

“We’re obligated to track and monitor all registered sex offenders in Clinton County,” said the sheriff.

When a convicted sex offender moves into the county, that person must register with the sheriff ’s department, providing information that will be made available to the public based on their sex offender level status, said Assistant District Attorney Doug Collyer. The three levels — Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3, with Level 3 being the most likely to reoffend — determine what information will be made public.

“A Level 1 offender is the lowest-risk and must register for 10 years from the date of conviction,” said Collyer.

The Level 1 offender is required to give basic information, including a photo and zip code.

Level 2 offenders must provide the same, with the exception they must register for 20 years from the date of conviction and their listing may also include additional information about their known whereabouts and places they frequent.

The Level 3 offender, noted Collyer, has the

most restrictions.

“A Level 3 offender must register for life. That individual has the most personal information available to the public, that includes a photograph, an exact address of where they live, and can also include information and details about

the crimes for which they were convicted or pled guilty to,” said Collyer.

The Offender Watch site, said Favro, provides more than the New York State Sex Offender Registry. “[The county database] provides more accurate information and more expeditious data entry into the system,” said Favro, who noted the department’s database can be updated within minutes versus the state’s site which could take weeks to be officially updated.

Offender Watch also allows those searching the database to find registered sex offenders within a quarter-mile from their home and search an up to two-mile perimeter, providing e-mails when an offender moves in or out of the area.

“We believe this program will create a safer community and give the community full access to information that they’re entitled to form the confines of their home,” said Favro.

Kevin J. Killeen, executive director of the Plattsburgh YMCA, said he values the resource Offender Watch can provide as a parent and a member of the community.

“I think people want to be more aware of what’s going on around them ... and parents should be concerned,” said Killeen. “My kids are older now, but I have lots of kids we deal with here at the Y that I consider like my own kids. And, their safety is our number one concern.”

New businesses now open on Route 3

sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — Magical Memories and Bella’s Salon & Tanning are open for business.

The two local businesses, located at 1016 State Route 3, the old Banker ’s Orchard location, opened Sept. 1.

“A lot of the stuff that’s made in here is made by local people,” said Marge Trim, coowner of Magical Memories. “A lot of people like Adirondack, a lot of people like crafts. I myself used to travel a lot to get things, so I guess the thought behind it was to bring something to the North Country so people didn’t have to travel, but the quality was still the same and a lot of people seem to like it.”

Trim, who lives in Morrisonville, opened the business with her sister, Debbie Parker of Cadyville, who she has worked with for the past 20 years as a special events decorator.

“We originally started out decorating for weddings as a hobby,” Trim said. “My brother got married, we went to [the wedding] and we said ‘We could do this.’ It just started as a hobby … and then it grew from there.”

“We figured if we did the weddings together, then we would spend some time of our adult life together,” added Parker.

From there, their hopes and dreams began to come true.

“We originally were just going to do the wedding part of it,” Trim explained. “But my dream, I always wanted to own a shop.”

The shop itself houses not just decorations for special events, but plays host to many other crafts, such as jewelry, furniture, seasonal decorations, and many other rustic and Adirondack-type crafts.

“A lot of people are surprised by what’s here. The variety,” said Parker. “They like the idea that it’s made by local people. The like that idea that it’s homemade and that it’s good quality. We have different things.

We have different people that bring stuff in.”

When Parker and Trim first opened the business, they were worried they would not be able to fill the large space with enough items.

“Now we’re running out of room,” laughed Parker.

Although Parker and Trim create many of the pieces themselves, they also take in many items from local crafters.

“We take anyone who’s got any crafts,” said Trim. “We don’t turn away anybody, because you may like something, I may like something different. I think that’s why people like coming in. They don’t realize the variety [we offer].”

“It surprises you the amount of people in the area and the talent that they have,” added Parker. “There’s a lot of people with a lot of talent.”

Both Parker and Trim agreed having a lot of local vendors providing crafts is also a great benefit to customers because if there is something they want made, the vendors can provide it.

Trim said she already has many plans for the future of the business, including opening a market barn, and hosting a Christmas Extravaganza, Nov. 13-14.

Bella’s Salon & Tanning owner Lou-Ann Perrotte also has seen her dreams come true since she opened her business.

In the beginning of her nearly 30-year career as a cosmetologist, Perrotte said she worked in other salons, until her husband built her one.

“I’ve been on my own for about close to 15 to 18 years,” she explained. “When we built our new home, my husband built me a shop off my house.”

Perrotte, who also lives in Morrisonville, said working from home was great as she raised her children, but once they grew up, she wanted to “expand and get out there more.”

“Margie [Trim] and I kind of talked about it a little bit here and there,” said Perrotte, who added her and Trim have been friends for many years. “She did her thing kind of the same way I was doing mine. We were both working out of our houses. We were just kind of a little bored with it and wanted to make it bigger.”

Now, Perrotte can finally say she owns her own salon — Bella’s.

“It’s a family name,” she explained.

“We’re Italian. My father ’s very Italian, so he always called me Bella. It means ‘beautiful’ in Italian.”

Now Perrotte can make others beautiful with her wide-range of services offered at the salon for men, women and children, including coloring, haircuts, perms, sets, waxing, foils, and a tanning bed.

“It’s great,” she said. “It’s a great great feeling. Especially now that things are really tough. Times are hard for everybody. It’s an achievement. It’s taken me almost 30 years to get here.”

As the only cosmetologist on staff, Perrotte said she offers a quiet and private atmosphere.

“It’s just one-on-one,” she explained. “It’s just me and you. All my time is on one person.”

No 23rd debate in our area We were disappointed to hear Congressman Owens declined our invitation to a live debate with Republican challenger Matt Doheny in our portion of the district. We understand there was a televised debate last week aired in the Watertown and Syracuse markets.

This is a very large congressional district and scheduling is difficult, but with most of the area’s media outlets working together recently to share the stage and coverage of these events, one would have thought a debate in the Clinton/Essex County region could have been worked out by the competing camps.

With so much attention to the upcoming elections and so many negative campaign ads airing these days, one would think the candidates would welcome an opportunity to be seen in person side by side so voters can make their own comparison and reach their own decision, without depending heavily on being swayed by the political spin doctors.

Plus, with our nation in so much turmoil and voter anguish at such a high level, I would like to think the candidates would welcome the opportunity be seen together ... but, then again, is it really about sending the best candidate to Washington or is it just a matter of selecting the lesser of two evils?

In my opinion, until we have term limits, outlaw political contributions to candidates not made from voters within the districts they serve and insure these elected officials are subject to the very same laws we must live under, will anything really change?

I remain a strong believer in a home-delivered product, but recognizing the value of our free community papers, making them conveniently available will allow the paper to continue to provide its much needed service to the community.

Plattsburgh Combat Sports gaining popularity

By Sarah L. Cronk sarah@denpubs.com PLATTSBURGH — What first began as a small group of guys gathering to practice mixed martial arts, has now turned into a real club.

According to their Facebook page, the purpose of Plattsburgh Combat Sports “is to advance our training in the disciplines of wrestling, Jiu-Jitsu, karate, boxing, and Muay Thai. We do it for the challenge, the fitness, and the love of MMA.” A few of the current members have been practicing together for a couple years at the Plattsburgh City Gym, but after the past Burlington Brawl, the group gained in membership.

“We went over to Burlington and found all these guys from our area that had been training,” explained PCS member Tony Lewis. “We never knew anybody else in this area was doing anything.”

Lewis said the group now trains together, and when any of them have a fight, they fight under the name of Plattsburgh Combat Sports, although the group isn’t sure that makes them an official MMA team.

“Most teams represent a school or

sponsor,” Lewis said. “That’s something we lack right now.”

This Saturday, Oct. 23, three members from the club will take part in the Burlington Brawl 10, including Frank Palumbo who will be fighting for the title in the 145 pound weight class.

“They determine a champion for each weight class, so I’m challenging the champion in my weight class,” Palumbo explained. “This will be my fourth fight this year. I’ve won all three of my fights so far.”

Palumbo said he has high hopes for winning the title. Member Tim Durney also has high hopes for doing well at the brawl.

“I feel good,” he said. “I’ve put in the hours … but it’s been tough. But, I feel good.”

Newest and youngest member Zach Ayotte, 18, will be taking part in his first fight at Burlington Brawl.

“I’m really excited,” he said. “Once I went with them to the last brawl, I got really motivated to put myself in there.”

Ayotte first learned of PCS when he met Palumbo at Villaris of Plattsburgh, where he was interning.

“He came for a grappling club at [Plattsburgh State University] and we met there and he wanted me to come

along with him to one of the brawls and train with him,” he explained.

Ayotte said he has been practicing karate and Jiu Jitsu for the last 10 months or so.

“I’ve picked up stuff from all of the guys here,” he explained.

Having a large group is something Lewis finds really benefits the entire club.

“Zach is tall and thin with a long reach. Matt [Provost] is a lot more compact,” explained Lewis. “When you get an opponent, you never know who the guy is going to be so … you get to train against guys with a lot of diverse styles. It just helps you prepare and be more well-rounded.”

“We’re not at the same level that we were even a month ago,” he added.

“Everybody has gotten a lot better.”

Palumbo agreed having a large group of guys has only benefitted PCS. “Having more training partners, you get different perspectives, you get different techniques,” he said. “If you only have one partner to work out with, whoever gets tired first, it’s kind of almost the end of the workout.”

For the future of PCS, Durney just hopes to get more support from New York State, which currently does not

“Even the promoters in Burlington have expressed wanting to get it over here,” said Durney. “We have venues like the Crete [Civic Center] that we could hold a big event and generate revenue for our community.”

PSU student cyclists organizing ‘Petal to Protect’ Community event will honor accident victim, promote safer streets PLATTSBURGH — Students from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh are joining forces with the community to promote safe streets in the wake of a student cyclist’s recent death.

Members of the college’s Biketopia club will host “Petal to Protect,” this Sunday, Oct. 24, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., in Amitié Plaza in front of Angell College Center.

The club chose the name “Petal to Protect” as

a play on words, Biketopia president Samaria Corrales said, because the event will feature a cycling caravan that will pedal to the accident scene where they will leave flower petals in honor of fellow student Yee Hao “Bryan” Chiel, who died Sept. 28. Chiel was struck by a tractor-trailer while riding his bike at the intersection of State Route 3 and the ramp for Exit 37 on Interstate 87.

The caravan of cyclists will leave the college at 12:30 p.m., moving down Rugar Street to Hammond Lane and onto Cornelia Street. There, cyclists will park their bikes at Agency Insurance and place flowers at the scene of the accident.

The event will also feature informational booths, a bike clinic and safety checks. A rally

“The event will serve three purposes,” said Corrales. “First, we will honor Bryan Chiel. Second, we will call attention to the need to make our streets — and especially Cornelia Street — safer. This road is extremely dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists alike. Finally, we will remind cyclists of the rules of the road and the need to take precautions — like wearing bike helmets.”

In an effort to show a commitment to safety, the group is asking everyone who joins the caravan to wear a helmet. A limited supply of free bike helmets will be available.

LAKE PLACID — Three local Hospice organizations will host “Write Your Own Ending: It’s About Living Each Day,” a full-day conference at the High Peaks Resort, 2384 Saranac Ave., Wednesday, Nov. 3.

The conference — sponsored by High Peaks Hospice & Palliative Care, Hospice of the North Country and Hospice & Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley — is geared toward those facing a life-limiting illness or who care or have cared for someone who is terminally ill and are seeking a more peaceful and dignified end of life experience. Professionals who support people facing imminent death will also benefit.

The conference will feature Stephen Kiernan and Linda Piotrowski, nationally-renowned speakers on end-of-life care. Kiernan and Piotrowski will offer new perspectives on finding comfort, compassion and dignity when it matters most for someone and their loved ones, whether at home or in the hospital.

The morning workshop, “Love & Parachutes: Shaping the Final Chapter of Your Life,” features Kiernan — lecturer, investigative journalist, author and advocate for compassionate end-of-life care. In his critically-acclaimed book, “Last Rites: Rescuing the End of Life from the Medical System,” he writes, “I found the way we die in America has changed dramatically and the way we care for people not changing at all. I found people suffering needlessly.”

Piorkowski presents nationally on spiritual care in palliative services and will help us to better understand “the power of spirituality as a healing therapy offered to patients and their loved ones while engaged in the medical system.”

A chaplain and pastoral care coordinator for Palliative Care at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire, Piotrowski also served as a chaplain at the Central Vermont Medical Center and other long-term, acute care and hospice settings. As the regional director of spiritual care for the Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare System in Milwaukee she supervised 27 chaplains and eight parish nurses.

Karen Becker and Friends to perform Nov. 6 PLATTSBURGH — The State University of New York at Plattsburgh Department of Music will present a fifth anniversary concert by Karen Becker and Friends Saturday, Nov. 6. The concert will be held the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium of Hawkins Hall on Broad Street beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Dr. Karen Becker, a pianist and an assistant professor of music, is calling her concert “Five Years in the North Country: A Retrospective.”

“I initiated the Karen Becker and Friends series when I arrived in 2005. This year presents a wonderful opportunity to showcase old and new friends, many of whom have performed in my series in the past,” Becker said.

The Nov. 6 program will include the return of visiting guest artist Sonja Thompson of St. Paul, Minn., on piano, and Brian Donat, a new guest from the Adirondack region, on cello. Also visiting will be SUNY Plattsburgh alumna AhYoung You, a 2009 music grad, who is now studying piano performance in graduate school. She will join current piano students Yana Groves and Manami Matsubara in the program.

Faculty members Robin Cameron-Phillips and Janine Scherline will be making a return appearance on flute and clarinet, respectively. Also featured on piano will be music faculty Jo Ellen Miano and Timothy Morningstar as well as former dean of education Dr. David Hill. In addition, the concert will include a special appearance by SUNY Plattsburgh president John C. Ettling who will also perform on piano.

“The audience is in for a treat. The program is diverse and fun and includes many piano pieces featuring two, four, five and eight hands,” Becker said.

Peering through the Glass Onion

Though the rock and roll band consists today of Brad Sample, John Rabideau, Matt Mero, Greg Miller and Mike Lykens, the band was formed in May 1989 by Sample, Miller, and Rabideau’s brother, Joel.

Eventually, John Rabideau moved home and became the final member of the band. In 2004, after 15 years as lead guitarist, Joel stepped down to focus on his career and new family.

“Being in a band for over 21 years, we have learned all sorts of different types of music,” he said. “We do, however, focus on playing rock and roll more then any other genre. But with that in mind, rock and roll has been around for a long time and has changed a lot along the way.”

And, though Sample plays drums, Rabideau plays rhythm guitar, Mero plays keys, Lykens plays lead guitar and Miller plays bass, all five sing.

“Hopefully, with our harmonies and our song selections, we will keep bringing people up on the dance floor,” said Miller.

The band is warming up for their next gig, playing the annual Halloween show at Olive Ridley’s next weekend. The two-night event will be among the long list of places the band plans to play in the coming months, leading up to a special New Year ’s show the band is working on, said Miller.

“And that’s all we can say about that at this point,” he said, shrouding the event in secrecy.

that moniker and went with “Uforia,” a name which stuck with them until they found another band from Boston went by the same name.

When deciding what they should next call themselves, they turned to The Beatles for inspiration.

“That name came out of a Beatles anthology book,” explained Miller. “Basically, the book was dropped on the table and then we dropped a finger on the page without looking, and it landed on one of the songs off the White Album, Glass Onion. We have used that name ever since.”

The band’s first performance, to their best recollection, said Miller, was at the Monopole.

“It’s hard to remember after over 21 years,” joked Miller.

Ever since, they’ve played countless venues in countless places across the region, from the bar scene to weddings to parties and nearly every kind of event in between.

“We have played at some unique venues like a Christmas party at the Echo Center on the waterfront in Burlington,” said Miller, “and, just this past summer, we played a wedding at The Wild Center in Tupper Lake. That was our first wedding at a museum.”

The secret to Glass Onion’s success has been the wide variety of music they play, believes Miller.
