Gabler, Bush race to victory Record field runs Ti’s Montcalm Mile By Fred Herbst
fred@denpubs.com TICONDEROGA — A record field set a blistering pace in the 27th annual Montcalm Mile road race in Ticonderoga. The race, held just prior to the community’s July 4th parade, attracted 239 runners. Leading the way were Lee Gabler in the men’s race and Dana Bush in the women’s event. Both are prior winners. Gabler broke away from Jay Berube and Jesse Berube in the final strides to win. He was clocked in 4 minutes, 7 seconds. Jay Berube was second in 4:08 and Jesse Berube third in 4:12. All three are former Ticonderoga High School cross country and track stalwarts. Bush was never challenged in the women’s race, winning in 4:46. Danae Polson was second in 5:00 with Julia Dmochowski third in 5:09. The race is a downhill mile that follows the the town’s Independence Day parade route. Run just before the parade, the race draws hundreds of spectators. The Montcalm Mile is sponsored by the LaChute Road Runners Club of Ticonderoga. Proceeds from the event are used to support youth running activities in the community. Panther hurler named league MVP MVAC names softball, baseball all stars By Fred Herbst fred@denpubs.com
Alexandra Macey of Crown Point is the Mountain and Valley Athletic Conference Division I softball Most Valuable Player. Macey, a senior, led the Panthers to the MVAC and Section VII Class D championshps this spring. She was also named to the New York State Sportswriters Association Class D second team for her play. Macey had an 8-1 record on the mound, her only loss coming to the eventual state champion in the state tournament. She posted a 1.06 earned run average allowing just 36 hits and striking out 161 in 86 innings. At the plate she had a .692 average, belting eight home runs, nine doubles and a triple. Crown Point’s Brittany Foote and Maria Malone were named to the MVAC Division I first team all star squad. Foote hit .483 this spring with seven home runs, nine doubles and a triple. Ò Brittany is only a freshman with potential to be the best hitter/power hitter to ever come out of Crown Point,Ó said Tony Macey, her coach. Malone hit .327 and had an on-base percentage of .840. Rounding out the Division I all stars are Jen McGinn and Jazmin Barnes of Elizabethtown-Lewis, Renee Marcotte and Alyson Arnold of Willsboro, Megan Reynolds and Amber Polomsky of Chazy and Brendee Russell of Westport. Schroon Lake won the sportsmanship award. Shelby Hogan of Minerva-Newcomb is the MVAC Division II MVP. The Division II all star team includes Maddie Miller and Emma Gray of Indian Lake-Long Lake, Tucker Geiger and Taylor Geiger of Keene, BobbiJo Paige of Wells, Astasia Myler and Valeri Gereau of Johnsburg, and MaKenzie Winslow and Dakota Bennett of Minerva-Newcomb. Keene won the Division II sportsmanship award.

Kyle Bisonette of Chazy is the Division I MVP. Westport won the Division I sportsmanship award. The MVAC Division II all stars inclue MVP Seth Weaver, Jake Early, Caleb Hayes and Adrian Collado of Wells, Colin Farrell, Henry Sandiford and Matt Moore of Indian Lake-Long Lake, Austin Williams of Minerva-Newcomb and Nate Prouty of Johnsburg. Keene won the sportsmanship award.

Baseball Crown Point placed four players on the MVAC Division I baseball all star team. Jon Spaulding, Michael Dushane, Jaice Spring and Joe Foote represent the Panthers. Rounding out the all star team are Nathan Reynolds and Craig Botten of Chazy and Austin Morris and Hugh Harwood of Elizabethtown-Lewis.
