With the acceleration of urbanization, Shenzhen's natural environment and Jiangwan ecosystem are under great pressure. Shenzhen is located at an important node of the East Asian-Australasian migratory bird migration route, and a large number of migratory birds stop and inhabit here every year. However, habitat loss and ecological degradation caused by urban development pose a serious threat to the migration and survival of migratory birds.

Therefore, the implementation of the river bend reconstruction project is particularly important and urgent.

The existing plant resources in the site are scarce, the stability of resistance is weak, and there is a lack of reserves to deal with the crisis.

Temporarily raise the land and create slopes to slow down the inward shift of the coastline caused by sea level rise.

Construct elevated boardwalks to cope with unstable sea level heights and reduce disturbance to benthic fauna.

In the face of rising sea levels, the site is gradually handed over to nature, and only a few.hidden birdwatching spots and roads for human activities are reserved.

Mulberry fish pond

The combination of mulberry fish pond and leisure tourism can attract urban residents to experience farming culture, drive local economic development, and become an ecological barrier along the coast of Shenzhen Bay, reduce the erosion of the coastline by wind and waves, and protect the surrounding ecological environment.

Buffer area

The main purpose is to prevent the core area from being directly affected by external environmental changes and human activities, and to provide a relatively stable ecological environment for the core area.

The pioneer zone is designed, and the soil in the pioneer zone is usually affected by periodic inundation of seawater, resulting in a higher salinity in the soil. There are also a large number of benthos and insects living in this environment, which can purify water, ecological cycle and provide habitat.

Area for popularization of science

An important base for popular science education. Its unique plant groups and natural ecological landscape provide a good place for the campus to carry out scientific and technological practice activities, and also provide research reference for scholars and experts.

Bird observation point

The natural ecosystem in the protected area is undisturbed or rarely disturbed by human beings, mainly to protect the precious and endangered mangrove provenance.

Core region

A bird that lives mainly in trees and depends on trees as its living environment.

In order to reduce human intervention, we designed the boardwalk, tourists pass above the boardwalk, birds pass below the boardwalk, reducing the chance of human contact with birds.

It is home to many species, including a large number of Marine life and migratory birds.

Ecological floating island Vanguard region Mangrove forest Plank road

Ecological floating islands serve as habitat for fish and other aquatic organisms, which can gather a large number of species, and also provide habitat and food basis for migratory birds.

MIGRATORY BIRDS

They should live in aquatic environments, especially birds that are good at swimming, diving or foraging on the surface. Their habitat is mainly concentrated in waters, including lakes, rivers, oceans, reservoirs, ponds, etc.

WADING BIRDS

Birds adapted to live in shallow water or near the shore, and their main habitat is usually wetlands, swamps, lakes, river banks, and coastal beaches.

Since May 1, 2014,

ARBOREAL BIRDS
part of Shenzhen Bay has been designated as a no-fishing zone to protect Marine fishery resources, endangered wildlife and mangroves.

Conduct a questionnaire survey on the current situation, cultural and emotional needs, entertainment needs, rest needs, market needs, and other aspects around the Yinjiang River. The target age range is designed from young to old, and a systematic Q&A and coding process is conducted to visually identify the local site selection issues and the approximate types of population needs.

Design Statement for Revitalizing Gubei’s Foreign Community

Location: Shanghai,China

Type: Individual work; Academic Project

Duration: 2024.9-2024.10

Changning District :

Shanghai’s Hub for Foreigner Residents

Spatial residence distribution of foreigner in Shanghai

Changning District in Shanghai has become one of the primar y hubs for foreign residents, making it a core area for international communities in the city. This connection developed due to Changning’s convenient location, quality international schools, and a range of amenities tailored to foreign tastes, such as international supermarkets, restaurants, and healthcare facilities. Over time, the district has cultivated a welcoming environment for foreign expatriates, especially families and professionals, with neighborhoods that reflect both local and international cultural influences.

This design proposal aims to revitalize Gubei’s foreign community by enhancing its cultural identity while promoting integration with Shanghai's urban environment. Key goals include preserving heritage through culturally inspired public spaces and art, fostering cross-cultural connections with shared plazas and event spaces, and implementing eco-friendly features that align with both international principles and Shanghai’s sustainability goals. The vision is to create a vibrant, cross-cultural community where diverse traditions harmonize with Shanghai’s dynamic city life, enriching Gubei’s identity for the future.

Gubei, once the largest Japanese neighborhood in Shanghai, has gradually transformed into an upscale neighborhood populated by foreigner s.

Hongqiao, and Changning.

What are the needs of foreign settlers in Shanghai Gubei community?

International Schools and Childcare – Access to international or bilingual schools for children, along with reputable childcare options.

Healthcare Services – Quality healthcare providers, ideally with English-speaking staff, covering both general medical and specialist services.

International Grocery and Dining Options – Access to grocery stores with imported products and restaurants offering a variety of international cuisines.

Language Support and Community Services – Translation services, language classes, and expatriate support networks to help with language barriers and cultural adaptation.

Recreational and Social Spaces – Parks, gyms, and social clubs that cater to diverse interests and facilitate community connections.

Banking and Financial Services – Financial institutions providing convenient international banking, currency exchange, and investment options.

New commercial office buildings
The old old residential compound.
New shopping malls.
The historic Gubei Primary School.
Ancient Guibei Archway site.
Foreigners used to live in western houses.

Strategy: Integrate multiple international community activity places into the traditional Gubei district of Shanghai.

Shanghai traditional community facilities

The design hopes that the style of Shanghai's traditional neighborhoods will remain the street background, so the existing old commercial building centers, community buildings and public Spaces are only preserved or renovated.

The design divides a section of the street into an international living area, including the street of different countries, the service facilities for foreigners and the exchange center.

New international community facilities

The International Exchange Center can provide translation, reservation and government affairs services for foreigners from all over the world.
