EDITOR’S LETTER
T
his month our profile theme is about successes. When diving into the definition
of success, I believe it means different things to different people. Some measure it monetarily; others measure success by reaching goals such as graduation, buying that first home, or checking
off one more thing on that bucket list. For me, success is a constant journey. I have found that the road to success can be a long and bumpy road, often littered with pitfalls and roller coaster rides. At different periods of my life, it has been defined differently. There seems to be multiple peaks and not one ultimate pinnacle. So, for those of us conscientiously striving for success, the often-asked question is: what is the formula? I believe one achievement builds on another, a pyramid if you will, constantly getting higher. I’m a firm believer that setbacks and mistakes, as hard as they are to see at the time, will also help build success. It’s quite simple, really. If you are thinking of failure as the enemy of success, I strongly disagree; there are no failures, only life-lessons leading us to the next accomplishment. I believe success often comes from experiencing disappointments, or failures, without losing enthusiasm. Many of life’s failures came when we didn’t realize how close we were to success and we gave up. Big rewards require big sacrifices, and as long as we’re driven by purpose, success will be at the end of the road. Opportunities don’t just happen, we create them. We find our own limits or boundaries by pushing them. One of the good things about listening to the clock tick and more birthday candles each year is that maturity comes from many years of successes and failures. Often the older we get, the wiser we get, and the more powerful we get. Oprah Winfrey said it well when she said, “We’re all on a heroes journey. We fall down, we get back up. Who’s that person who decides we don’t get another chance?” You define success in your own way. I agree with Thomas Watson who said, “To be successful, you have to have your heart in your business, and your business in your heart.”

T
he pioneering anthropologist Margaret Mead once stated in her discussions on human development and history, society should “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.� This axiom has proven true time and time again throughout our history. It is seen in the work of community leaders, of coaches, and of teachers. It is also, on rare occasion, seen through the lens of a dramatic and significant event; a
singular achievement whose impact is broad and everlasting. Not so long ago, our community was the epicenter for such an event, and it is largely though the efforts of one man that we are able to remember and preserve its legacy for generations to come.
Like many El Pasoans, Joe Gomez came to the Sun City as a result of his father, Pedro, being transferred to Fort Bliss. The family would later be transferred to Germany, and then again back to El Paso where Joe finished high school. He graduated from Burgess in 1965 and enrolled at Texas Western College that fall. Encouraged to pursue his passions, he chose to major in history with a minor in physical education.
Looking back, it is relatively easy for us to understand the cultural significance of the 1960s, but it is much more difficult to appreciate the significance of events while they are occurring. It is also considerably more difficult to appreciate the scope and reach of events, but luckily for our community and for a special group of athletes and their coaches, Joe was able to do just

forever.” In 1964 the Civil Rights Act was passed, banning discrimination on the basis of “race, color, religion, sex or national origin” in employment practices and access to public accommodations. And in 1965, the Voting Rights Act was passed, officially eliminating the poll taxes and other subjective voter tests that were enacted to prevent minorities from being able to vote. So, as Coach Don Haskins, beginning his fifth year as head coach of the Texas Western College basketball team, and his team from El Paso began their season, the world around the team was changing in large and powerful ways. When I sat down and talked with Joe about what it was like on campus, as in so many other areas of the country, sports was providing a respite from the turmoil and providing a showcase that demonstrated that whites and blacks could not only coexist, but could be successful together. As he told me, “Memorial Gym simply became a place where anyone and everyone could go, and where everyone did go, regardless of what they looked like.” As the season progressed, the games grew even more popular and the community even more involved. The 1966 team finished the regular season in early March 1965 with a record of 23-1,

At the age of 20, he married. And as his family grew, so did his need for additional income. He began to make plans to purchase his first laundromat after borrowing money from his brother. Viramontes then acquired 30 washers and eight dryers and installed them in a building leased from the Haddad family. He then began to launder denim garments and his new company grew extensively. But as the industry evolved, Viramontes knew it was time to update yet again. In 2013, he and Aaron launched their commercial laundry business International Laundry Services in the 30,000 squarefoot building at 12651 Montana. Today, 35 people are employed at the site and services include restroom supplies, screen printing, uniform rental, specialized healthcare linen service that ensures medical regulatory compliance, restaurant products and apparel, mats (including brush, anti-fatigue, antimicrobial, safety and logo), embroidery and more. Also involved are siblings Charlie and Shanna as Chief Marketing Officer and HR Administrator, respectively.

At Western Tech when a student registers, their tuition is locked in, their classes are guaranteed, and they only register once. The teacher-student ration is also much smaller than other schools, the largest class might have a maximum of twenty-five students. There is also Basil Gardens restaurant which offers a variety of meal choices for staff and students. The campus also includes an onsite day care for students who have children. The staff is trained to work with the students to get to know them and be available to them for any issues that may arise, which in some cases may be an obstacle that would result in the student dropping out. Every effort is made to ensure that each student receives not only a high quality education, but the support necessary for the successful completion of their chosen degree. It is evident, among everyone on staff at Western Technical College, that this is a family oriented business. And they are very proud of where the school is today. They are a community oriented business, too. They have partnerships with many corporations but are equally proud of the partnership they have with Fort Bliss. I believe that art without an audience and the interaction is not art … it is craft.” But it is in these conversations where the passion of this artist truly begins to shine, “I can say the community has a lot of influence in my work. My work derives from images found in social media, which now-a-days creates movements and shifts perspectives. I use images that the viewer may find relative to convey a concept. Using such images makes the viewer more comfortable in expressing what they think when looking at a painting of mine.” This interaction with the community has bled into a multitasking professional life that employs his unique set of skills. “I have been working for almost three years at a factoring company, Interstate Capital Corporation, where I hold the position of Lead Account Manager and Assistant to the Operations Manager,” Irigoyen explains. “At first my peers feared that an artist couldn’t hold such a position and I almost didn’t get the job, but I proved them wrong.” His celebration of success is intriguing to watch unfold. “A degree in art instills problem-solving skills, teaches the eye to see other routes, other influences that may come. In addition, an art degree teaches patience and language.” At first this contradiction in nature may seem odd, but Paco actually finds it as a source of inspiration. “My work gets inspired by everyday activities, images, and social media. While the last couple years in beauty have seemed to focus on the eyes, 2015 seems to be all about the lips. From Kylie Jenner’s new pouty pucker to Katy Perry’s bright red mouth during the Super Bowl halftime, celebrities are mirroring our new obsession with a bold, statement lip. But perfecting these looks can be a bit tricky for the amateur, as they require a bit more precision, practice and patience than simply swiping on that clear or nude gloss you may be used to. Follow these sure fire tips to getting a pro lip look that even Gwen Stefani would envy: Step 1. Exfoliate. The first step in getting that perfect lip look is preparing the lip by removing any dead skin. Winter weather can really dry out your lips so you want to slough off any dry skin before applying any products (especially ones with color) to your lips. If your lips are seriously chapped, use a sugar or almond scrub to buff skin to a smooth finish before proceeding to step 2 (Try Bliss Fabulips Sugar Scrub $18 or E.L.F. Cosmetics Studio Lip Exfoliator $3).
Step 2. Prime. While not as popular as their eye counterparts, lip primers can do wonders to prevent bleeding, feathering, and can provide for even application and long-lasting staying power (Try MAC Prep + Prime Lip $16 or Too Faced Lip Insurance $20).
Step 3. Line. Kylie Jenner set social media on fire with her plump, matte mauve, perfectly lined lips and beauty bloggers quickly following with dupes and tutorials to help achieve this look (which her sister Kim attributed to her overdrawing with liner rather than injections). To achieve a similar effect, follow the outer edge of your natural lip line starting in the middle of the lip (at the center of the bow on the top lip) and follow the line to the corners. Then fill in the entire lip with the liner (Try NYX Slim Lip Pencil in Mauve $3.49 or for a classic red lip try MAC Lip Pencil in Cherry $16).
Step 4. Layer. Apply a matte lipstick starting in the middle of your mouth and working outwards to the edge of the lip liner using a square lip brush. Blot with a tissue to remove (Try Make Up Forever Lip Brush-300 $21, NYX Matte Lipstick in Natural $6, MAC Retro Matte Lipstick in Ruby Woo $16).
Step 5. Perfect. Using either a clean lip brush or flat eyeliner brush, take a bit of concealer in a shade close to, or slightly lighter, than your foundation to trace around the lip to correct any mistakes that you might have made, blending the concealer seamlessly into your foundation. This also creates a subtle highlight and helps your lip color stay in place. You can also use a concealer pencil or “reverse” lip liner around the mouth to perfect your look (Try NYX Wonder Pencil in Light, Medium or Dark $4.50, Cargo Reverse Lip Liner $16).

Extracurricular activities like
sports and other student organizations can churn some of the most productive individuals in any city. But what happens when all kids need to do is rock out? El Pasoans have always guided their little Vivaldis toward the school concert or marching band or choir. But, let’s imagine those kids were less Beethoven and more Black Sabbath. Sound Stage 9 has become the perfect remedy for the infliction of Rock ‘n’ Roll! Hidden at the far end of a commercial office complex in east El Paso is a dojo for future rockers, rappers, DJs and any combination of the like. Here opportunities that musicians in generations past couldn’t even conceive are made reality. Classes in rapping, DJing, and even recording studio basics are offered to anyone, of any age, who wants to put in the time. “Listening to and watching our favorite rock bands perform really influenced us to begin playing music,” says Jaime Aranda, the co-partner in the venture along with Roger Argenis. “Like many musicians we picked up our instruments to learn our favorite songs and be able to play them.” This trait would further allow the concept behind Sound Stage 9 to ruminate in the minds of these two El Paso music scene staples. “Roger has been and is currently associated with his band Aerial and I was associated with BB Gun Johnny,” Aranda continues. Both bands launched both owners’ careers, which have included a number of official releases, an immense body of press, and national tours with opening slots for bands such as Nico Vega, The Sounds, and El Paso’s own Murder F.M.

Vibrant, clean, and technically efficient in every way, the studio is comfortable and approachable, a perfect fit for youngsters and inexperienced musicians alike. “The vibe and personnel in a studio make a huge difference. If an artist can feel in their element, the finished product will reflect that,” says Aranda. “Our staff is professional so they know what they’re doing in the studio, but they’re also very personable and down to earth.” Directly next to the control room is the first in a series of classrooms. The lesson rooms are set apart and an integral element in the process. Practice and education do make perfect after all, but then you have to learn and practice some more, and so on, and so on. The instructors altogether have years behind them as professional educators as well as performing musicians themselves. A true highlight of the building is the rehearsal room. Compared to the practice

he weekend is finally here and you are
ready to go out, even though you’ve been
up since 6:15 a.m. for that annoying early
meeting. You take a few sips out of your friend’s

March, 2015 “Whenever we make a drink, we make it the most important drink and that’s why we’ve gotten a really good response from the costumers,” says General Manager of Blackbird Cantina Deluxe, Eduardo Cruz. Blackbird opened on Halloween night of last year and since then El Paso can’t get enough of this new place. What used to be a normal laundromat located near the Southwest University ballpark in downtown is quickly becoming the “it” place of the city. Blackbird has not been changed much so the cultural aspect of the laundromat could define the tone of the bar and bring a redefined local taste to it. “The owners of this place really believe in the local community. This place was a laundromat and we didn’t change it for a reason,” says Cruz. Besides maintaining the original architecture, Blackbird is a remodeled place that truly is “aesthetically beautiful.” Now you are wondering, what kind of place is this then? What kind of people can I expect to see there? “It’s kind of an unspoken agreement between the people running the

place and the people coming to the place,” says Cruz as he prepares a delicious Gin Fizz. The truth is Blackbird becomes a melting pot of people from all over El Paso because the drinks range from a simple bottled beer to an exquisite egg white bourbon drink. “We just want to be a bar where people come and get anything they want,” says Cruz as he shakes the Gin Fizz for the foamy element of the drink to come out. Downtown El Paso is quickly growing and it’s

Large crowds will be gathering to celebrate a win (or a loss) at the new Cantina, since it’s extremely close to the stadium and, again, because they have every kind of drink so satisfy even the pickiest of palates. Blackbird is only four months old and is already looking to create a front patio and a rooftop terrace that will add to the massive back patio it is famous for. you may find a young girl with hair as fiery as her tennis game sitting behind the counter. Unless you know otherwise you wouldn’t appreciate that this quiet El Paso tween is the number one ranked tennis player for 12-year-olds in the country. Gianna Pielet has been playing tennis since the age of five, when her dad and coach, Doug Pielet, Director of Tennis at El Paso Country Club, noticed she could hit the ball quite well … a slight understatement. “I saw her skill and drive to compete,” explains Doug, “She has the ability.” Doug has played and coached tennis most of his life as well, even playing on the Junior Circuit and all through college. When he earned his degree from UT Austin he took an advertising job in Chicago but it wasn’t long before coaching lured him back onto the courts. Once he and his wife married and began their family, Doug told himself that little white lie that every sports professional tells themselves, “My kids will never do what I do.” That being said, Gianna has gone on to

Try not to sugar coat the issue, and express your feelings as things happen. • Don’t bring up old grudges, especially if they don’t belong in a particular argument. Keep your new argument relevant. Bringing up arguments from the past will only make things worse. Make sure you squash things after every argument, and try to move past them. • Don’t ever cross the line, especially if you begin to character assassin. Name calling is never a good way to argue. Not only will you hurt your partner, but when it’s all over the regret will come into play. • Know what your goal is going into the disagreement, and remain task-oriented. If you don’t have a specific goal in mind, you won’t know when you’ve achieved it. • Cut your partner some slack. Be willing to receive the olive branch, and accept their apology at some point. Depending on the intensity of the argument, be willing to let go of the grudge and move on. Holding onto a grudge can not only be exhausting to your partner, but to you as well. • Think logical, and don’t try to make an argument out of everything. If there is something I can’t stand are “naggers.” Put yourself in their situation, how would you like someone to nit pick at you all the time? You do not have to get mad at every opportunity you have. • There should be a time limit on how long you too are fighting. Arguments should only be temporary, and a learning experience for both of you. You learned from the mistake, now you move on. Save those for the beach and recreation • No low-cut or revealing dresses or blouses • No shorts Gentleman may wear a suit, a sport coat or a nice shirt and slacks (do not forget the belt). If you must wear jeans, make sure they are clean, pressed, without holes, worn with a belt and with shirttails tucked in. Ladies may wear a suit, dress, nice skirt or pants with a blouse or sweater. St. Patrick’s Day is all about soups, stews, corned beef and cabbage and Irish soda bread. So, when it comes to planning a St. Patty’s Day menu, there are two main approaches that you want to take: One is to choose recipes that are Irish-inspired or include well-known ingredients. The other is to make sure that the ingredients are healthy and nutritious for your body without compromising that amazing Irish taste. My choice for this St. Patrick’s Day is organic Irish Stew flavored with asparagus and Brussels sprouts along with the traditional Irish potatoes, carrots and of course succulent tender grass-fed lamb. Irish soda bread compliments this nourishing stew, and healthier gluten-free apple dumplings brings. St. Patty’s Day to a nice finish in a natural and more wholesome way without compromising your new–found fitness. A pint of Guinness is the drink of choice to accompany this traditional Irish meal. 126

Organic Irish Stew with Whole Grain Soda Bread SERVES 4 - 6 Ingredients 3 lbs. organic grass fed shoulder lamb chops not less than 1 inch thick (leg of lamb can also be used) 5 medium or 12 baby organic onions 5 medium or 12 baby organic carrots 8 -12 organic brussels sprouts 8 -12 organic asparagus spears 2 organic Heirloom tomatoes (organic cherry tomatoes will work) Himalayan salt (or sea salt) and freshly ground black pepper 3 cups of vegetable stock, low sodium (lamb stock if possible) 8 organic yukon potatoes 1 sprig of thyme 1 tbsp. chopped fresh parsley 1 tbsp. chopped fresh chives 1 tbsp. organic coconut oil 1 tbsp. coconut flour 1 whole grain Irish soda bread Directions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Cut the chops in half and trim off the excess fat. Peel the onions leave whole if they are small. If they are large cut in quarters. Scrape or thinly peel the carrots. Cut the carrots in half or leave whole if they are young carrots. Slightly brown the meat in a steel or cast iron skillet and add some water and coconut oil. Transfer the meat in a casserole, then quickly toss the onions, carrots, brussels sprouts, tomatoes, asparagus in the skillet and sautÊ lightly. Transfer the vegetables into the casserole and season the vegetables and meat with Himalayan salt and freshly ground black pepper. Stir the vegetable stock (lamb stock if possible) into the skillet stir to dissolve the caramelized scrapings and pour into the casserole. Peel the potatoes and lay them on top of the casserole, so they will steam while the stew is cooking. Season the potatoes, add a sprig of thyme, cover and place in the oven until the stew is cooked. This will take 1 to 1 ½ hours depending on the type of oven you have. When the Irish Stew is cooked, pour off the cooking liquid, skim off the fat. Reheat the liquid in a saucepan and slightly thicken with coconut flour. Season with a pinch of salt, ground pepper and add the chopped parsley and chives. Bring to a slight boil and pour the liquid over the stew and serve directly from the casserole dish or transfer to a large serving dish. Warm the Irish Soda Bread and serve with the stew!

GLUTEN-FREE ORGANIC APPLE DUMPLINGS SERVES 4-6 Ingredients: 6 organic granny smith apples or golden delicious apples (buy local or at the farmers market) Gluten free pie dough, or organic vegan fillo dough, gluten free 2 tbsp. organic brown sugar 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg 2 tbsp. organic butter or Ghee (butter) 4 tbsp. honey 1 cup water 1 tsp. lemon juice 1 tsp. vanilla extract Âź cup large organic raisins Âź cup organic chopped walnuts 1 cup apple juice or apple cider Directions: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Core your apples using a knife or apple corer. Peel your apples. Roll out the pie crust very thin, or if using fillo use 2 sheets cut in half for each apple. Place each apple in the center and sprinkle with cinnamon, nutmeg and brown sugar and stuff the center of the apple with a few walnuts and raisins and top with some butter or Ghee (butter). If using gluten free pie dough, fold the dough up and over and pinch the sides. If using fillo organic vegan dough, just fold over the entire apple. Prick the dough with a fork to allow the steam to escape. Drizzle with whole made syrup and bake about 40 minutes or longer until the apples become soft. Homemade syrup: In a saucepan, heat honey with water, lemon juice, vanilla extract. Mix in some cinnamon, brown sugar, nutmeg and apple juice or cider. Bring to a boil and reduce the heat so the liquid will start to reduce and create a thicker sauce-like consistency. Add some walnuts and raisins to the reduction. Pour over apples and bake uncovered while basting periodically. Sprinkle a few more raisins and walnuts on top of the apples. After baking, let apples cool for 5-10 minutes and serve immediately. Enjoy with vanilla frozen yogurt or even organic vanilla ice cream. 128
