THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

“Winter is the time for comfort, for good food and warmth, for the touch of a friendly hand and for a talk beside the fire: it is the time for home.” – EDITH SITWELL

Editor-in-Chief W inter is when we spend the most time of the year in our homes. The

holidays bring friends and family, and those of us who are homies (one of

my imaginary words drawn from the word foodies), look forward to hosting holiday parties full of friends and family. This is the time we “homies” share the personalities of our homes, the personalities of families. A large part of the ego we have about looking good is at some point transferred to the places we call home. That’s the place we invest in ourselves. We seek to build long lasting spaces that reflect our style and who we are; designs that make our guests feel at home and still speak to our needs. Are you ready to fall in love with cooler temperatures and inspiring winter styles? Your head will spin with ideas as you turn the pages and view some of the local homes that fill this issue. We hope that you draw from the trend alerts which offer ideas on exposed brick and the new fall colors. You will also learn more about the popularity of farm sinks, how to choose a rug for any room, and new design ideas ... and we’re not

talking about your grandmothers design elements! We’re showing the latest trends that will keep your home in a fashionable style that you’d be proud to showcase. We hope that in this issue you find a home style that resonates with you.

trend Alert

Winter, 2015

Right now we are obsessed with seeing brick used in uncommon ways. In the kitchen we love to see brick used as a backsplash behind the stove or sink, or just to accentuate a small space. Think how that earthy look will accent the kitchen and give it a “homier” feel. Any style of wooden cabinets complement brick nicely and even marble countertops add character to the mixture of textures and colors that will bring a modern yet rustic feel to any house. If you are not totally convinced about the reddish color of the brick or the myriad number of variations available, with a good coat of paint you can transform the brick to whatever style you want. For example, you can choose to paint the bricks white to accompany a more modern style like metal cabinets and more contemporary furniture. The room that brick has been used most widely and most successfully is the living room. Brick can be used to add interest to just one wall in a room, or even as the focal point. If you already have brick incorporated into your fireplace, a good coat of paint or even some interesting artwork will spice up the area and give the space a breath of fresh air. Other raw materials that could be used with brick are cinder blocks, or rocks mixed between the cement in which the bricks are being incorporated. Altogether these looks are very unusual and they can make any room pop. Don’t be scared on bringing brick back into your home, you will discover that it’s pretty easy to work with and the possibilities are endless! www.thecitymagazineelp.com

piece showcasing the beautiful and historic Catholic Church in Juárez. “When designing the home and thinking about how everything would flow, art truly was the primary color in every room,” Catherine said. The kitchen also houses a lovely blue tile accentuated by the windows and high skylights that allow just the right amount of light into the home. “We have 16 sets of French doors in the house – and really only one true window,” Catherine explained. This room pours into a casual eating area, a more formal dining room, and also backs into the main living room which features a handsome stone fireplace. The main living space flows seamlessly into the Calhoun’s lush and spacious backyard. “I actually put in every plant myself,” Catherine explained. “It was very labor intensive, but the effect is nice. We sit out there every night and we love how cozy it feels.” The living room and niche-filled hallway also lead into a set of extra bedrooms, an extra bathroom, and on the opposing side of the hall, the master suite, complete with enchanting linens, high ceilings, and even a place for their adorable dogs. The master bathroom overlooks a private section of the backyard through paneled windows that look out into rich flowerbeds and high expanding trees. The last room in the home is the library. This room, painted a rich red hue is stacked with books and is set with a stately desk and comfy office furniture. The room also contains a hand painted Italian chandelier, a gift from Catherine’s mother. “That was actually one of the light fixtures in our old home, but I simply couldn’t part with it so we brought it along with us.” When asked what influenced her as she put the pieces of the home in place, Catherine said, “I don’t know, it all sort of came to me. I love the monochromatic look that allows our art collection to pop. I also love the color of dried grass. This unique shade of green is simply my favorite and can be found throughout the home. Altogether this was about creating a space that was home to me and Ed Songy and I think we succeeded.”

aradise; a word synonymous with the defining elements of the El Paso region and its surrounding areas, the desert, and climate coupled with a contemporary design that make up Edward McCormick’s glorious home. Inspired

by climate and the Hispanic culture that encompasses the diverse Sun City, McCormick built his paradise centralized on the theme “of the mountain, not on the mountain,” which comes from a highly recognized quote by Frank Lloyd Wright. “Because my home is built into the mountain, the lower level of the home allows the master bedroom and upper areas to cantilever over those lower areas. Cantilever is a term used to describe the illusion of suspension without support,” noted McCormick. A cantilever element is not the only fascinating aspect of this breathtaking home. The interior and exterior of the space provide elements that were customized to provide both functionality and beauty. “The house has a special programming to try and make people feel comfortable even though it has some fairly industrial parts,” said McCormick. Among those industrial parts are gripping concrete floors, “it’s a terracotta-colored concrete that comes from a batch plant, which is polished down and goes through different phases. It begins with a pretty heavy grid and they get down to a very fine grid, which means there’s roughly 2,000 pieces of sand or so in the grinding per inch; therefore, it goes from a very rough to very fine texture. The concrete is laid in squares that are one meter

were here before us say there is a ghost here.” Barbara pauses a moment before admitting, “now, I don’t know about that, I’ve never seen one.” But what is clear is why one would think that. Inside Out Design sits on 4798 Doniphan Drive, and the building’s appearance and atmosphere is simply magical. Along the hustle and bustle of Doniphan, the building sits as a small, silent reminder of the past. And yet, despite it’s lack of size, somehow stands out in an undeniable way. The history of the house starts almost 50 years before it’s actual

construction in 1935 by a historical figure well known in El Paso and it’s surrounding regions – Zach White. In the early 1890s, Mr. White built the first international bridge in El Paso, the Santa Fe International Bridge. Eventually, the original wooden bridge was torn down for it’s steel replacement. It was here that Paul Harvey stepped in and decided to incorporate some of the larger beams into construction of his house, and so the beams went from bearing the weight of horses and foot traffic to providing structure to a home. Mr. Harvey, seeing a possibility to build on the historical basis of his house, commissioned an unknown Italian immigrant to carve the story of El Paso into the front beam of his house. This wooden tapestry brings to life a Native American hunting buffalo, Spanish Conquistadors, and more regarding El Paso and the surrounding areas history. Mrs. Merrill recently had an artist commissioned to paint the carvings to fully bring out the story on the beam. “For years, nobody could see all this, so we had it painted so people could see it. I didn’t even know it told a story until it was (painted)!” says Barbara. Though originally a house, the building has evolved over the years to suit the needs of whatever it needed to be. Over it’s lifetime, the Doniphan address has been the headquarters for the Waterworks Department, a drapery store, a gift shop, and possibly even a stop for the Pony Express. Currently, the original framework predominately houses Inside Out Design, where Barbara and her husband have done a fantastic job restoring it while

SINKING IN The Rise of Farm Sinks in the Kitchen | By: BRIANNA CARMEN |

hink about walking into a kitchen in the country, complete with the scent of apple pie and a sweet old lady donning an apron, readying dinner. The image is one of home, simplicity, and comfort – three things which farm sinks embody. This popular choice was once a staple

in rural houses and prevalent in homes in the U.K. The farm sink, also known as the apron front sink, traveled its way across the North Atlantic Ocean and by the 1920s, the cast iron variety gained popularity in the United States. Years later, the basins fell out of style as stainless steel ones rose to prominence. Now, the humble sink is making a comeback. Other than nostalgia, farm sinks in the kitchen are quite useful. The bowl sits lower than others, allowing for both professional and aspirant cooks to accommodate large cookie sheets and deep pots with ease. The ergonomical design lessens strain and stress for the user because there is no counter to lean over. Placement that is nearer to the front allows for one to get ‘closer to the action’ and dive right into the task at hand. Another bonus: a deeper sink means less splashing and less water damage to nearby cabinets. Apron front sinks are becoming popular choices and there are more options available, ranging from material to design are endless. Traditional cast iron has been updated with enameled cast iron in a slew of colors to match numerous kitchen palettes. Sinks can also be made out of concrete, porcelain, and fireclay. Metallic options include stainless steel and copper. Farm sinks that are made out of stone can

El Paso’s Pottery House | By: MEAGAN KINLEY photography by: FRED GOLDEN |

I

f you are not familiar with the work of famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, his architectural influence and innovation encompasses many fantastic homes, including pieces of American ingenuity like Fallingwater, to well-known buildings like the Guggenheim Museum

in New York City to many others. Wright even had plans to construct a place here in El Paso he called The Pottery House. Unfortunately Wright never had the chance of completing the project and some years later the plans were picked up by another architect who completed the project in Santa Fe, New Mexico instead of El Paso. Honoring his esteemed contemporary, architect Edward E. McCormick of McCormick Architecture here in El Paso was enlisted by a homeowner to finally complete the project in the city it was originally meant to stand in. “There was actually an initial owner who was unable to complete the project. I was brought in by the second and current owner of the home and we finished the job from there,” McCormick said. Inspired by Wright’s plans, McCormick used some of the original elements and came up with a new, unique design that better matched the new owner’s focus. “I like Frank’s work. This project was different for him, most of his pieces are low and long, I don’t know who inspired him to do The Pottery House. The original plans for this home are circular and very different from his other work. I

inter is here and if you’ve noticed that your chilly wood and tile floors are making it hard to get out of bed in the morning, it may be time to consider adding some rugs to your home. Rugs provide more than a warm touch; they can liven up any room with

color, texture and can also serve to improve the acoustics in your home – because let’s face it, those harder floors can have a bit of an echo. If you’ve thought about the possibility of adding rugs to your home and just haven’t bit the bullet and made the purchase yet, this winter is your time to finally make your woven dreams a reality. As you’ve noticed while perusing in any of our city’s home décor stores, rugs come in all colors, shapes, sizes, and styles. You may have also noticed that they can cost a pretty penny. With these two factors in mind, it’s as important as ever to consider your budget, your personal style, and the dynamics of your home. There is simply no point in going out to do battle without a game plan and without knowing what you can spend, you can find yourself dazed by the selection you are sure to find when you go out to buy your rug. Obviously, the larger the rug and the more material and texture it contains is going to mean a larger price tag so think about

your plans: do you want to put all your eggs in one basket and get one large statement rug for your living room? Or do you want to invest in a few rugs to create continuity throughout your home? Whichever you decide, just make sure you go into the store with a realistic idea of what you can afford. Professional stylist and interior decorator Ladonna Apodoca advises, “The right rug, whether pricey or

affordable, is an investment in style and can be that added element that takes the look of a room to a whole new level.” The second largest item to consider is your personal style. Your home obviously already contains furniture and décor that speaks to you and your family’s personal taste, so unless you are throwing in the towel and deciding to completely redecorate, try to work with your existing interior design. Do you already have a lot of color? Maybe opting for a more neutral toned rug with texture would help add stability and warmth to the room. Or if you have the opposite problem and your walls and furniture need some life, choose a rug that adds a subtle pop of color. There are so many different types of rugs – from oriental, to shag, to even more organic pieces like animal skin and bamboo, you simply cannot go wrong when adding one of these pieces to your home. When thinking of adding a rug to a specific room, Ladonna suggests, “For me, adding a rug to a room is the same as adding a piece of art. Several key factors need to be considered. How is the room going to be used? How big or small is the space and what’s your preference in color and material?” Once these items are considered it’s important to look around to give yourself the most options – and don’t forget to shop local! El Paso has some amazing stores that carry a fantastic selection of rugs. For a more contemporary look, consider Copenhagen Imports. For something more traditional, Charlotte’s Furniture may have the perfect rug for you. Whatever you decide, adding a new rug to your home is sure to add warmth, comfort, and more personality to any space. So get out there! Shop around and come home with the perfect piece of woven art to complete your home.

Maple Digital Picture Frame | By: THOMAS DIAZ |

THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

When you think of traditional framing, what comes to mind? Squares, rectangles, circles and wood? These are just a few traditional concepts that may pop up. Picture framing has been around since the time of ancient Greek society to house art and family portraits considered valuable to our homes, offices, churches and public museums. The value of frames may differ from person to person, but during the renaissance they were considered to be an artifact of status used by Nobles and Monarchs to represent their success, often fitting the frames with various designs that remain intact till this day. Framing has since changed with the advent of modern technology and has grown to be something that is seen in almost every household and continues to evolve conceptually as society progresses technologically. Digital framing, since the early 2000s has changed the market of framing into something of convenience, losing the marvel of creative framing. The cluttered picture frames on the desk are no longer an issue, however the house becomes something less without the touch of personality and what’s a house without a soul? A company founded here in El Paso, Texas called Maple Digital has brought a solution to dull framing everywhere and has created a product that transforms any picture into an extraordinary piece of art that can be personally defined, to add to your home or business and anywhere else you think is adequate to hang a personalized picture frame. Mojtaba Masoumi, owner and designer of Pattern Frame, a modern and contemporary picture frame, has brought framing and personalization to a whole new experience. Industrial and Manufacturing Engineergone-designer, Mojtaba Masoumi has combined his expertise in the engineering field with his artistic talent in photography and visual arts to create his vision that is Pattern Frame. Masoumi’s vision of pattern frame came from noticing generic shaped frames seen often as circles, ovals and other polygons, which led him to conjure the idea of “Something that fits with modern architectural design and matches www.thecitymagazineelp.com

decorations.”

Unlike any other frame, pattern frame is the only company within the USA and Canada that offers this unique style of framing. Pattern frame designs are inspired from geometric and unorthodox shapes that are made by laminated solid MDF wood with a black painted edge. The pictures are printed on high resolution 1440 dpi premium 10mil fabric paper. The customization process makes designing for the consumer a breeze as MapleDigital.com provides a free web application system that makes designing personalized frames extremely easy. The process involves simply choosing a pattern (frame design) and uploading a picture and adjusting it to the frame. The applications of this method are limitless to both art and modern framing, as you possess the ability to customize freely so long as it’s geometrically feasible. If necessary, a catalog of unique shapes is provided by their website. The pictures in your household will never speak the same to you again or

Chalk It Up | By: SARA SANCHEZ |

an you still picture the chalkboard in your third grade classroom? The smell of the chalk, the sound it made as your teacher ran it across the board, the clouds of dust the erasers made when you banged them together? Chances are you haven’t been in contact with a chalkboard

since. But thanks to this fast-growing trend, you can

now bring back a little of that childhood goodness into your own living space – in a big or small way. For starters, you have probably seen evidence of this trend all over the place from store shelves, magazines, blogs, to even social media websites like Facebook and Pinterest. The popularity of chalkboards has made it easy to purchase everything from a statement chalkboard for your kitchen – to post menus, lists, and other cute announcements – to everything from chalked cheese plate – allowing you to label your food for events – to chalked wreaths, furniture and anything in between. If you are a bit of a DIY-er there are options for you too! You can get a quart of chalkboard paint at almost any hardware or home improvement store for around $10. The matted black finish is versatile and can go nicely in any room. Using chalk paint you can do everything from adding cute chalk accents to existing décor, or painting an entire wall or door that can be used to welcome guests into your home.

www.thecitymagazineelp.com

85

THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

Starting Small Not quite ready to commit to an entire chalk wall? Start with small accents that give your space a big impact. Buy some basic terracotta planters and paint them with the chalkboard paint. Plant your favorite herbs, write down their names using chalk and place your planters in a window for all to see. Do you like leaving positive messages on your mirror, but you can’t bear wasting your favorite lipstick? Try using your chalkboard as a frame around your mirror and write yourself reminders and little messages of encouragement to get you out of bed, out of the house and out in the world with confidence. Remember you can also use chalked tags to label and help organize your life. Some come on rustic pieces of cut tree trunks, others come on more trendy shaped boards – whichever shape you choose, these little labels will help you organize your spaces with a little more pizazz. If you want the chance to be creative with your chalk designs, buy a basic wood frame and paint it with your chalkboard paint. Pop in your favorite photo and use colored chalk to personalize your frame. Remember, if you are a bit fearful of DIY, almost any home décor store in town will have something tasteful you can incorporate into your home.

Going Big Ready to take the plunge? Use your chalkboard paint to create an accent wall in the most social room of your home. Keep chalk handy at all times so your guests can write, draw or leave some personalization from a great party. You could even use your accent wall as a backdrop for party pictures. Your guests can draw hats, speech bubbles or anything else to get your gathering going. If you have children, you can even let them show their creative side with worry-free drawings that can stay as long as they’d like. If you still can’t commit to an entire wall, use a door as a canvas that will look stylish and feel welcoming. Use your chalkboard paint as a starting point for a weekend project. After you buy the paint, take a Saturday morning stroll and browse around at local flea markets and yard sales for old but interesting pieces of furniture. Bring it home, dust if off and get painting. If you find 86

THE CITY SPACES HOME & DESIGN

an old dresser, for example, you can paint it and use chalk to label where everything goes. Or if you find an end table, paint the top and use chalk to create witty doodles, like water stains and magazine covers. Whatever you choose to do, chalkboard paint is a great way to introduce both nostalgia and a minimalist color and texture to your space. It’s also one of the easiest ways your guests can leave their impression in your space. The cleanup will be much easier than you might remember it as a kid, and if you’re lucky you might not have to hear the dreaded nails-on-chalkboard.

A Note on Chalk With the advent of lettering the chalk market itself has exploded. Don’t feel limited with generic bulky sized chalk (in the calcium form), there are many options and sizes available at your local craft store so make sure you get varying sizes of thinner and thicker chalk pencils and pens (yes, they come in pencil and pen form) so that you are not craning over a inch long piece of thick chalk. You can also opt for liquid chalk; this goes on a little cleaner and allows for a less smudgy-look, so just think about what you want your overall chalk appearance to look like: if you want more rustic, go pencil, for a little more professional, go liquid pen. Remember, the pen is more powerful than the sword and this is even truer in the world of chalk. The more fit your writing utensil is to you, the better your handwriting will appear, which in turn will result in a more dignified, professional-looking chalkboard.

Add in mustard, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, and salt. Reduce heat to low and continue to stir for about 5 minutes. 3. Mix in shredded cheese: Gouda and Cheddar. Once they are mixed together, add cheeses to the pot and continue stirring until thoroughly combined. 4. Add cooked macaroni to cheese mixture, and then pour into a 13x9 dish. 5. Add the melted butter and top dish with bacon. 6. Bake uncovered at 375 degrees in oven for 25-30 minutes, then serve.

Sculptural Fire screen Haven’t figured out how to add something new and fun into your home this season? Try out a statement fire screen -- they are decorative, sculptural, and an unexpected way to inject more personality into your home.

Folding screens If your place lacks architectural detail and charm, add personality with carved, upholstered, or decorative folding screens. This is a beautiful way to divide and section off spaces and when mounted flat against a wall. These items also serve as another layer of artwork.

Top colors Greek blue, olive green, pastels Ready to step outside of the box this winter? During the winter season we tend to go darker or lean more towards holiday colors like different shades of red. This winter try something new like a Greek blue shade, olive green, or pastels! Hint* these colors are said to be colors of the year so if you decide to go for a full on makeover at home then consider these! If not, consider incorporating these colors on pillows, throws, occasional furniture, and accessories. Though the weather may be cold, these colors will be sure to warm things up at home! www.thecitymagazineelp.com

Damaged goods can be good in this case If you haven’t considered decorating with burl wood in your home you may want to reconsider because this material is one of the chicest interiors. If you are unsure what burl wood is, let me give you a quick definition. Burl wood is derived from the part of tree growth with deformed grain, caused by some sort of stress, however this is the most beautiful thing we have seen derived from stress because these damaged goods not only look beautiful, they look absolutely luxe! Try out burl wood through furniture or start simple with accent pieces.

Highlight rooms edges Looking to add detail to your home without spending a fortune? Try subtle detailing with paint treatment where the edges of each wall are highlighted in a contrasting color. This is a quick way to add detail to plain spaces. We suggest opting for a dark color to maximize the effect.

Kids rooms trends For those of you looking to revamp your child’s room, here are some fun trends to try out. Embrace a monochromatic look by color matching the wall to the furniture and shelves for a twist on the traditional color palette; this look will also work to highlight toys and art collections. Next, let’s put down the iPad’s and gadgets and focus on your kiddos imagination -- set up and help them build a teepee in their room, a fun project for the whole family! For color, leave the pastel colors for grown ups and let’s go for a more non-traditional route for your child’s backdrop with a calico floral wallpaper, it’s unexpected but fun and looks fresh and modern.

If you convert a traditional IRA to a Roth IRA and it turns out to be the wrong decision (things don’t go the way you planned and you realize that you would have been better off waiting to convert), you can recharacterize (i.e., “undo”) the conversion. You’ll generally have until October 15, 2015, to recharacterize a 2014 Roth IRA conversion--effectively treating the conversion as if it never happened for federal income tax purposes. You can’t undo an in-plan Roth 401(k) conversion, however.
