Right now we are obsessed with seeing brick used in uncommon ways. In the kitchen we love to see brick used as a backsplash behind the stove or sink, or just to accentuate a small space. Think how that earthy look will accent the kitchen and give it a “homier” feel. Any style of wooden cabinets complement brick nicely and even marble countertops add character to the mixture of textures and colors that will bring a modern yet rustic feel to any house. If you are not totally convinced about the reddish color of the brick or the myriad number of variations available, with a good coat of paint you can transform the brick to whatever style you want. For example, you can choose to paint the bricks white to accompany a more modern style like metal cabinets and more contemporary furniture. The room that brick has been used most widely and most successfully is the living room. Brick can be used to add interest to just one wall in a room, or even as the focal point. If you already have brick incorporated into your fireplace, a good coat of paint or even some interesting artwork will spice up the area and give the space a breath of fresh air. Other raw materials that could be used with brick are cinder blocks, or rocks mixed between the cement in which the bricks are being incorporated. Altogether these looks are very unusual and they can make any room pop. piece showcasing the beautiful and historic Catholic Church in Juárez. “When designing the home and thinking about how everything would flow, art truly was the primary color in every room,” Catherine said. The kitchen also houses a lovely blue tile accentuated by the windows and high skylights that allow just the right amount of light into the home. “We have 16 sets of French doors in the house – and really only one true window,” Catherine explained. This room pours into a casual eating area, a more formal dining room, and also backs into the main living room which features a handsome stone fireplace. The main living space flows seamlessly into the Calhoun’s lush and spacious backyard. “I actually put in every plant myself,” Catherine explained. “It was very labor intensive, but the effect is nice. We sit out there every night and we love how cozy it feels.” The living room and niche-filled hallway also lead into a set of extra bedrooms, an extra bathroom, and on the opposing side of the hall, the master suite, complete with enchanting linens, high ceilings, and even a place for their adorable dogs. The master bathroom overlooks a private section of the backyard through paneled windows that look out into rich flowerbeds and high expanding trees. The last room in the home is the library. This room, painted a rich red hue is stacked with books and is set with a stately desk and comfy office furniture. The room also contains a hand painted Italian chandelier, a gift from Catherine’s mother. “That was actually one of the light fixtures in our old home, but I simply couldn’t part with it so we brought it along with us.” When asked what influenced her as she put the pieces of the home in place, Catherine said, “I don’t know, it all sort of came to me. I love the monochromatic look that allows our art collection to pop. I also love the color of dried grass. This unique shade of green is simply my favorite and can be found throughout the home. Altogether this was about creating a space that was home to me and Ed Songy and I think we succeeded.”

by climate and the Hispanic culture that encompasses the diverse Sun City, McCormick built his paradise centralized on the theme “of the mountain, not on the mountain,” which comes from a highly recognized quote by Frank Lloyd Wright. “Because my home is built into the mountain, the lower level of the home allows the master bedroom and upper areas to cantilever over those lower areas. Cantilever is a term used to describe the illusion of suspension without support,” noted McCormick. A cantilever element is not the only fascinating aspect of this breathtaking home. The interior and exterior of the space provide elements that were customized to provide both functionality and beauty. “The house has a special programming to try and make people feel comfortable even though it has some fairly industrial parts,” said McCormick. Among those industrial parts are gripping concrete floors, “it’s a terracotta-colored concrete that comes from a batch plant, which is polished down and goes through different phases. It begins with a pretty heavy grid and they get down to a very fine grid, which means there’s roughly 2,000 pieces of sand or so in the grinding per inch; therefore, it goes from a very rough to very fine texture. History “I’ve heard all kinds of stories about this place,” says Barbara Merrill of Inside Out Design, her eyes gleaming with stories. “The people who

were here before us say there is a ghost here.” Barbara pauses a moment before admitting, “now, I don’t know about that, I’ve never seen one.” But what is clear is why one would think that. Inside Out Design sits on 4798 Doniphan Drive, and the building’s appearance and atmosphere is simply magical. Along the hustle and bustle of Doniphan, the building sits as a small, silent reminder of the past. And yet, despite it’s lack of size, somehow stands out in an undeniable way. The history of the house starts almost 50 years before it’s actual
construction in 1935 by a historical figure well known in El Paso and it’s surrounding regions – Zach White. In the early 1890s, Mr. White built the first international bridge in El Paso, the Santa Fe International Bridge. Eventually, the original wooden bridge was torn down for it’s steel replacement. It was here that Paul Harvey stepped in and decided to incorporate some of the larger beams into construction of his house, and so the beams went from bearing the weight of horses and foot traffic to providing structure to a home. Mr. Harvey, seeing a possibility to build on the historical basis of his house, commissioned an unknown Italian immigrant to carve the story of El Paso into the front beam of his house. This wooden tapestry brings to life a Native American hunting buffalo, Spanish Conquistadors, and more regarding El Paso and the surrounding areas history. Mrs. Merrill recently had an artist commissioned to paint the carvings to fully bring out the story on the beam. “For years, nobody could see all this, so we had it painted so people could see it. I didn’t even know it told a story until it was (painted)!” says Barbara. Though originally a house, the building has evolved over the years to suit the needs of whatever it needed to be. Over it’s lifetime, the Doniphan address has been the headquarters for the Waterworks Department, a drapery store, a gift shop, and possibly even a stop for the Pony Express. Currently, the original framework predominately houses Inside Out Design, where Barbara and her husband have done a fantastic job restoring it while

in rural houses and prevalent in homes in the U.K. The farm sink, also known as the apron front sink, traveled its way across the North Atlantic Ocean and by the 1920s, the cast iron variety gained popularity in the United States. Years later, the basins fell out of style as stainless steel ones rose to prominence. Now, the humble sink is making a comeback. Other than nostalgia, farm sinks in the kitchen are quite useful. The bowl sits lower than others, allowing for both professional and aspirant cooks to accommodate large cookie sheets and deep pots with ease. The ergonomical design lessens strain and stress for the user because there is no counter to lean over. Placement that is nearer to the front allows for one to get ‘closer to the action’ and dive right into the task at hand. I
f you are not familiar with the work of famous American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, his architectural influence and innovation encompasses many fantastic homes, including pieces of American ingenuity like Fallingwater, to well-known buildings like the Guggenheim Museum
in New York City to many others. Wright even had plans to construct a place here in El Paso he called The Pottery House. Unfortunately Wright never had the chance of completing the project and some years later the plans were picked up by another architect who completed the project in Santa Fe, New Mexico instead of El Paso. Honoring his esteemed contemporary, architect Edward E. McCormick of McCormick Architecture here in El Paso was enlisted by a homeowner to finally complete the project in the city it was originally meant to stand in. “There was actually an initial owner who was unable to complete the project. I was brought in by the second and current owner of the home and we finished the job from there,” McCormick said. Inspired by Wright’s plans, McCormick used some of the original elements and came up with a new, unique design that better matched the new owner’s focus. “I like Frank’s work. This project was different for him, most of his pieces are low and long, I don’t know who inspired him to do The Pottery House. The original plans for this home are circular and very different from his other work. I

Starting Small Not quite ready to commit to an entire chalk wall? Start with small accents that give your space a big impact. Buy some basic terracotta planters and paint them with the chalkboard paint. Plant your favorite herbs, write down their names using chalk and place your planters in a window for all to see. Do you like leaving positive messages on your mirror, but you can’t bear wasting your favorite lipstick? Try using your chalkboard as a frame around your mirror and write yourself reminders and little messages of encouragement to get you out of bed, out of the house and out in the world with confidence. Remember you can also use chalked tags to label and help organize your life. Some come on rustic pieces of cut tree trunks, others come on more trendy shaped boards – whichever shape you choose, these little labels will help you organize your spaces with a little more pizazz. If you want the chance to be creative with your chalk designs, buy a basic wood frame and paint it with your chalkboard paint. Pop in your favorite photo and use colored chalk to personalize your frame. Remember, if you are a bit fearful of DIY, almost any home décor store in town will have something tasteful you can incorporate into your home.
Going Big Ready to take the plunge? Use your chalkboard paint to create an accent wall in the most social room of your home. Keep chalk handy at all times so your guests can write, draw or leave some personalization from a great party. You could even use your accent wall as a backdrop for party pictures. Your guests can draw hats, speech bubbles or anything else to get your gathering going. If you have children, you can even let them show their creative side with worry-free drawings that can stay as long as they’d like. If you still can’t commit to an entire wall, use a door as a canvas that will look stylish and feel welcoming. Use your chalkboard paint as a starting point for a weekend project. After you buy the paint, take a Saturday morning stroll and browse around at local flea markets and yard sales for old but interesting pieces of furniture. Or if you find an end table, paint the top and use chalk to create witty doodles, like water stains and magazine covers. Whatever you choose to do, chalkboard paint is a great way to introduce both nostalgia and a minimalist color and texture to your space. It’s also one of the easiest ways your guests can leave their impression in your space. The cleanup will be much easier than you might remember it as a kid, and if you’re lucky you might not have to hear the dreaded nails-on-chalkboard.
A Note on Chalk With the advent of lettering the chalk market itself has exploded. Don’t feel limited with generic bulky sized chalk (in the calcium form), there are many options and sizes available at your local craft store so make sure you get varying sizes of thinner and thicker chalk pencils and pens (yes, they come in pencil and pen form) so that you are not craning over a inch long piece of thick chalk. You can also opt for liquid chalk; this goes on a little cleaner and allows for a less smudgy-look, so just think about what you want your overall chalk appearance to look like: if you want more rustic, go pencil, for a little more professional, go liquid pen. Remember, the pen is more powerful than the sword and this is even truer in the world of chalk. The more fit your writing utensil is to you, the better your handwriting will appear, which in turn will result in a more dignified, professional-looking chalkboard.

Gouda Macaroni and Cheese (with Bacon!) Serves 10-12 | Prep time: 20 minutes | Cook Time: 25-30 minutes A favorite of most American children, Mac and Cheese is simply one of the best examples of comfort food. Dress yours up this season with some more adult-like cheeses and delicious, crispy bacon. Ingredients 16 oz. elbow macaroni, cooked and drained 3 tbsp. butter, melted 1/2 cup bacon, cooked and crumbled 2 1/4 cup milk 4 tbsp. butter or margarine 1/2-cup flour 1 1/4 cup heavy cream 2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. ground pepper 1/2 tsp. dry mustard 1/2 lb. cheddar cheese, shredded 1lb. smoked Gouda cheese, shredded Directions 1. Prepare macaroni according to package directions, then set aside. 2. In a large pot, melt butter over medium high heat. Add milk and bring to near boiling. Reduce heat to medium and sprinkle in flour. Whisk vigorously over medium heat for 1-2 minutes. Mixture should be boiling, then slowly add cream while whisking. Add in mustard, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, and salt. Reduce heat to low and continue to stir for about 5 minutes. 3. Mix in shredded cheese: Gouda and Cheddar. Once they are mixed together, add cheeses to the pot and continue stirring until thoroughly combined. 4. Add cooked macaroni to cheese mixture, and then pour into a 13x9 dish. 5. Add the melted butter and top dish with bacon. 6. Bake uncovered at 375 degrees in oven for 25-30 minutes, then serve.
