EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Our design muscles get a workout daily, as we decide what to acquire at the design shop, which treasure to discard from days gone by, and what the latest project to either build or modify is. This constant “design on the brain” is why we talk incessantly about our apartments and houses. We have this need to prove that we can fully express ourselves in our home, all the while making our daily lives easier and more enjoyable. As you read the pages and flip through the pictures, we hope that you find inspiration for the rooms in your life -- perhaps for a space that takes you away from your daily routine, a haven for your imagination. oseph and Cindy Najera are two creative individuals living amongst us in the Sun City. Joseph, the
owner of Joseph Homes, spends his
time building and designing homes
here in El Paso alongside his wife
Cindy who also has her own children’s
photography business on the side. Many
years ago, the couple decided they wanted to build their own home where they could raise their three boys and one girl and enjoy the simple pleasures of family life; but Joseph and Cindy wanted a truly inspired home. So they decided to spend some time travelling around Europe, in Italy and Spain, to study architectural elements of these fantastic countries and soak in the years of art and culture that flowed from every pour of the cities they visited. “What we arrived at is a blend of Spanish and Italian style – definitely Mediterranean, but customized to suit our family,” Cindy explained. Built by Joseph Homes in 2011, the Mediterranean influence is easy to see even when looking at the home from the outside. With an iconic front courtyard, charming patios, high chimneys, and columns, it’s clear the home has beautiful Tuscan charm that only serves to compliment it’s southwest location. Altogether the home has five bedrooms, five baths, and a study that serves as Cindy’s photography studio – of which the interior was all designed by Cindy herself. As far as features, the space has magnificent Mahogany

(from Emser Tile), and completely custom windows and doors throughout the entire house. The kitchen cabinets and built in’s in the living space were made from fine alder wood cabinetry by Universal Cabinets and are beautifully matched by the rich exposed ceiling beams that flow into the formal dining room. The kitchen is equipped with stainless steel Wolf Subzero Appliances from Builder’s Source. One iconic feature of the kitchen is the rhomboid cracked backsplash, which Cindy had custom made and shipped in from

California. In all the production of the backsplash took two months, but the effect it evokes was certainly worth the wait. This backsplash mirrors fine granite countertops and the rod iron chandelier that hangs over the expansive center island. warming drawer. Walking back through the home, it’s hard to miss the fantastic front entryway, which features a long winding staircase that winds its way up to the upper floors of the space. The high ceilings, the iron chandelier, the exquisite tapestries and rich exposed beams high above greet guests into this warm, inviting home. Inside the more intimate areas of the house are the bedrooms. The master suite contains the Najera’s stately four-poster bed, his and hers closets and a warm fireplace sitting area. Complete with a patio and elegant dark-wood French doors, the room also pours into the master bathroom which houses gorgeous stone columns, and a large Jacuzzi. Other noteworthy features from the bedrooms in the home

are Cindy’s daughter’s bedroom. “The first thing I bought before we even finalized the floor plan for the home was the silver and pink damask wallpaper in my daughter’s bedroom. I think her room is my dream room from when I was a child, I think I spend more time in there than she does,” laughed Cindy. Outside of the home, the back patio contains an outdoor fridge, grilling area, and a swimming pool, which is perfect for the family’s needs. The Najera’s home is also solar powered. “We built the house knowing that we would eventually go solar. A 10-Kilowatt commercial grade system was installed by Border Solar on the flat part of the roof and we couldn’t be happier with it. Our electric bills have gone from about $500 a month to under $150 a month – and that even includes

This kitchen used to be rustic and unequipped, but it was reconstructed into a hyper-modern kitchen made for fine dining. The counters are made with fine gray marble and the cabinets were replaced with white ones with sparkling silver fixtures. The appliances, such as the fridge, the stove and its hood, are made with special iron in order to last for decades; still shining and functioning as if it were the first day they were installed. The homeowners furnished their home in art and all living rooms and dining rooms project that. The main living room consists of antique bookcases, desks, and furniture all from the renaissance era. Inside the stunning, wooded furniture are a number of small sculptures, candelabras, history books, Mexican Calaveras and crucifixes all gearing towards an eclectic theme. In the walls of this living room lie mainly religious paintings from the renaissance depicting the last days of Jesus Christ. Also standing out of the wall are a couple of portraits from the baroque era. It certainly is quite a lot to put in a living room, but this space breathes on its own due to the history that has been encapsulated. The main dining room resembles the one in which King Arthur used to feast with Merlin and his knights. The big and bold dining table is definitely appropriate for any big celebration dinner. A much simpler look exists in the walls and around this room since the table itself irradiates so much energy. The gracious chairs with big armrests are fit for a King and anyone who deserves to be acclaimed. The minibar is one of the three components that came with the extension of the house. This bar is made from the same materials the kitchen was made but it overlooks the windows that Ruth designed in order to bring light. This open space consists of another living room and a dining room. These two are much more down-to-earth. The second dining room has a blue and white dining table with a more earthy touch to match the peachy living room right next to it. These two rooms are touched by so much natural light since the windows for the remodeled area are twice as big as the original ones.

It almost feels like a sense of irony is being transmitted since these artists make you feel emotions most artists in the mainstream wouldn’t even dare. The main bedroom holds the same essence of satire because it contains a bunch of art that does not match each other. It is like a museum without dividing the art into neither eras nor styles. If you take a look at world-renowned fashion designer Valentino, his apartment in New York Fifth Avenue has exactly the same taste this one does. This only proves that your house and your taste does not have to be defined. You choose to unlabel your home by decorating it exactly like you want it, with whatever you want. Not many houses like this exist since the mainstream is progressively taking over popular culture, but there are those few brave ones that know precisely how to go the opposite way in the most of fabulous manners.

The ceiling beams are carved with over 200 different designs, with a repeating flower design in between portraits of their children are carved on either side of a plaque that reads, “Puente Santa Fe 1892.” Eddie Rodriguez, a Mexican artist who worked for the Harvey family off and on until his death in 1970, did all the intricate woodcarvings that are seen throughout the home. Wrought Iron sconces, electrical wire plates and hinges throughout the house were also handmade for the Harveys. The outdoor areas of the Harvey-Mattox home inspire cocktails with friends and long days of yard games. The yard off of the master bedroom is referred to as the “turtle yard” because it was once home to box turtles that were found on the road to Alamogordo, N.M. in the 1930s. Generations of box turtles thrived in that yard until the 1990s. The main yard has a bricked area behind a Chinese elm tree where once upon a time, there was a wading pool. The back yard provides a clear view into Mexico. There will never be another home like 3100 Gold, but now El Pasoans have the opportunity to pour their passion into their own homes at The Fields. he Sun City received a visit from America’s favorite son only four months after he had become arguably the most famous person in the
world. It was September 24, 1927 when “Lucky Lindy,” Charles Lindbergh, came to visit El Paso as part of a goodwill tour following his historic trans-Atlantic flight. In preparation for the visit, Mayor R.E. Thomason planned a festive reception for the famous flier, which included asking 10 World War I aviators to drive official cars in a motorcade downtown. This objective became the cause for these flying men and a few other supporters to meet on September 16, 1927 to form the El
Paso Aero Club.
The celebration was a success and the inspiring Lindbergh encouraged the city to continue it’s long tradition of being a transportation hub by opening itself up to the skies. As a result of Lindbergh’s historical visit, the El Paso Aero Club appointed ex-army fliers Stacy Hinkle and Fred Wilson, to draft plans with the objective to get a municipal airport, commercial airlines and airmail service for El Paso. El Paso chose for its airport the only city land available, and thus the Sun City’s first steps towards the sky were placed in a 260-acre tract formed by the intersection of Fred Wilson road and the Southern Pacific railroad tracks. To the east lay the Cavalry and Artillery drill ground, now known as Biggs Field that had been established as a military flying field in 1918 because of the depredations of Pancho Villa. The results of the work of Hinkle and Wilson led to a plan that included $25,000 for clearing and grading, a 60 by 100 ft. hangar; boundary lights and a rotating searchlight to guide pilots. At the time however no money was available, but a county ruling declaring an airport as a public highway lead to the clearing of the land and then a $32,000 bond issue was created to finance the rest. Within one year the primitive port with one small hangar and no artificial runways, was completed and Mayor Thompson, under a makeshift striped tent, spoke proudly before a crowd of 10,000 people who could see the future of El Paso aviation on September 8, 1928, “Today we drive another stake in the progress of El Paso. attended the ceremony and at his request the Army sent 21 airplanes from Kelly Field to thrill the large crowd with aerial acrobatics. In another touch of aviation history, only three days after the dedication Amelia Earhart landed in the Sun City. During its nearly 87 years of operation, the El Paso International Airport has continued to be a part of aviation history. Only 40 years after it’s dedication it had grown from a $25,000 investment into a $30 million complex. It was the same, in fact, when El Paso became the first city in the nation to have a 130-foot air traffic control tower. This tower once again made history in 2000, as it became the first control tower nation to operate a new radar system known as STARS, a technological upgrade that improves air traffic control and safety. The airport continues to push boundaries to this day as it serves as the home for NASA’s Training Ground for Shuttle Astronauts. These future space travelers train daily by practicing landings on simulated shuttlecraft. As a result of this collaboration, NASA helped commemorate the 85th anniversary of the EPIA in September of 2013 by dedicating a permanent exhibition to the Forward Operating Location Hangar, which has been part of the facility since 1978. The El Paso International Airport thus provides an interesting link between El Paso’s long past and intriguing future. With a history as a hub along both the Camino Real, running from Mexico City to Santa Fe, and the Butterfield Trail, which links St. Louis to San Francisco, El Paso is once more serving as a transportation center, with the airport serving as a link from the earth to the sky and even beyond. The humble origins of the one hangar facility have given way to a 6800-acre facility with three runways that serves millions of people and multiple airlines. Grottos might be a big project for some people, so here’s another feature that is a little simpler and will still add some great style to your swimming pool. Forget about boring water fixtures and make your pool a statement with a fountain. The options are endless, you can use an iron sculpture with a really modern feel, or something more classic like a stone figure. You can take inspiration from the gorgeous European fountains or even from the fountains at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. If you have a vintage fixture or sculpture that you’ve been wanting to use, this is the perfect idea – try converting an old fire hydrant, or a beautiful mud vase. If you don’t have anything of your own that you can use, there are a lot of websites that sell sculpture fountains for pools and are just waiting to be installed. Don’t be shy, try to add something unique and cool to your pool.
